Infrastructure worldwide has suffered from chronic under-investment for decades and currently makes up more than 60% of greenhouse gas emissions. A deep transformation of existing infrastructure systems is needed for both climate and development, one that includes systemic conceptual and behavioural changes in the ways in which we manage and govern our societies and economies. The OECD, UN Environment and the World Bank Group “Financing Climate Futures: Rethinking Infrastructure” initiative focuses on how governments can move beyond the current incremental approach to climate action and more effectively align financial flows with climate and development priorities. It explores six key transformative areas that will be critical to align financial flows with low-emission and resilient societies (planning, innovation, budgeting, private finance, development finance, and cities) and looks at how rapid socio-economic and technological developments, such as digitalisation, can open new pathways to low-emission, resilient futures. Three of the ten new PPCR countries also prepare investment plans under the Forest Investment Program. This is why the third session shed light on landscape approaches. Landscape approaches seek to provide tools and concepts for managing land with the objective to achieve multiple and at times, competing goals. Paola Agostini from the World Bank Group explained how investing in landscapes can yield a triple dividend consisting of higher productivity, better climate resilience and increased carbon sequestration. While Fabiano Godoy illustrated this claim with real-life examples from his practical work for Conservation International, Stephen Ling completed the examples sharing his experience with a Forest Restoration and Ecosystem Conservation project of the World Bank Group in Rwanda. Mercer | https://www.mercer.us | Mercer Wealth Investment Implications of Climate Change Our deep expertise, powerful insights, and real-world solutions help the people and organizations we serve take steps today to secure a better tomorrow. Climate change is impacting more than the physical world in which live. It’s affecting our financial world as well. How immune is your portfolio from the ravage of climate change? Transcript: Climate change is an investment risk and it’s here and now. So we need to build resilient portfolios and we need to act now. The way to do that is to understand what it means at an asset class level and also at a sector level. Well, this report really helps highlights the various impacts of climate change. That’s very important because it allows you to crystallize your thinking on how you should respond to both the risks and opportunities that climate change provides. This is a very complex topic so having a report such as this really does make it a lot easier for investors to plan their course of action and how they should response to climate change. Fund managers can use the report in terms of which sectors will be impacted, and what it is that their clients – the asset owners, the pension funds, the insurers, the super funds- will be looking for. Better risk management endowments and foundations will be able to use the report. Their long-term investors, they’re going to see value eroded as a result of climate change unless they are on top of these sorts of risks and understanding that there are wonderful opportunities to invest into such as sustainability and cleaner energy. Key findings are that climate change has an impact on investment returns regardless of which scenario an investors finds themselves in, according to our four scenarios so there’s no escaping the impact of climate change from an investment point of view. We really want investors to think about which scenario is likely from their point of view, and then what that will mean for them. First of all, there were three key parties involved, Mercer, Mira and Guy Carpenter, and then we also had the 18 institutional investor groups, our public partners IFC World Bank and UK Aid, so the UK government. They can invest and they can reduce their carbon exposure and they can engage, so really there three ways investors connect now. Invest in sustainable opportunities, reduce their carbon exposure, find out what is the carbon footprint in your portfolio, and engage with your fund managers, engage with your investor companies. Lots of ways to take the process forward. One of the first things that all investors can do is measure the climate change risk in their portfolios in a quantitative way and really give some sense of the gravity of the problem and what the implications might be. So that’s the first step that all investors should think about doing. So we’re also working on an explicit plan to incorporate climate change or the assessment of climate change risk into our portfolios and that will occur at multiple levels. It’ll look at both the asset class impacts of climate change and how we should respond that. I look at some of the sectoral impacts within a particular asset class and is there anything we can do to tilt the portfolio or better manager climate change risk within that? Also, how we engage with the underlying investment managers that we use which is also very important because they’ll be the ones perhaps that are selecting underlying stocks or bonds or securities that may be affected by climate change. So we want to make sure that they themselves have a good understanding of climate change are in a position to properly assess that in the building of the portfolios on our behalf. - - - - - - - Mercer Website: http://bit.ly/2nTYbtB Twitter: @mercer https://twitter.com/mercer Facebook: @MercerInsights https://www.facebook.com/MercerInsights/ YouTube: mercervideo https://youtube.com/mercervideo #mercer
