How to Read, Take Notes On and Understand Journal Articles | Essay Tips

05:33
The first pilot to my Essay Tips series! I share my method for reading and understanding a journal article or paper quickly and efficiently including how to take good, concise notes and remember useful citations. If your method differs from mine or you think you can give me some pointers then let me know in the comments! This is the first in a series of videos I'm hoping to produce while undertaking my PhD at the University of Exeter on tips for students at university or college whether undergraduate, postgraduate or otherwise. Note: The programme to the left (which I highlight in) is Mendeley. Apologies for forgetting to state this in the video!! If you've enjoyed this video then please do check out the rest of my channel. I generally put out new videos every Tuesday and Friday discussing theatre and playwriting from the perspective of an aspirant and (some might say) emerging playwright, theatre maker and academic. Why Stoicism Matters

07:28
Stoicism is a philosophy worked out in Ancient Greece and Rome thousands of years ago, but it remains hugely relevant to our own times: it offers us ways of learning how to cope with anxiety, fear and the dread of losing money, status and love. ABOUT THIS ADVENTURE FILM: IN this video I am here to talk about my entire experience studying abroad in Florence, Italy, where I lived for 5 months. I previously made a video about what it was like to live in my car for 6 weeks, and now I am back to talk about Europe. Overall I touch on points of letting go of fear and embracing new cultures and experiences. I talk about the hardships, the ups, the downs, and what made it worth it overall. I think traveling is a very important experience to enrich one's life, and I think study abroad is a great way to help actualize those dreams into a reality, especially in a place like Europe. That being said, it was definitely not all easy and a great time, it was a very difficult period of time in my life, and it forced me to adapt and grow, which I am very thankful for. Why comfort will ruin your life | Bill Eckstrom | TEDxUniversityofNevada

12:35
After documenting and researching over 50,000 coaching interactions in the workplace, Bill Eckstrom shares life-altering, personal and professional development ideas through the introduction of the “Growth Rings.” The rings illustrate how dangerous it can be to remain in a state of comfort and how being in discomfort is the only way to sustain growth. You’ll be amazed at the world-changing outcomes discomfort can have on your life and the lives of others. Bill Eckstrom is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, outdoorsman and father of three. With a passion deeply rooted in growth and development, Bill has always been fascinated by the role a coach has on the performance of individuals and teams. As a result, he founded the EcSell Institute whose sole focus is to educate, track and measure coaching effectiveness for leaders within organizations around the world. This has led to hundreds of keynotes, published articles and e-books created from the research and documentation of coaching interactions and outcomes. You can learn more about the EcSell Institute here: https://www.ecsellinstitute.com/ This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Identifying Articles through America History & Life

02:10
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ Transcript: This short Library video will show you how to identify journal articles and other scholarly sources through the database America: History and Life, one of the key search tools for history researchers at University of Guelph. America: History and Life allows you to search listings of scholarly journal articles and other sources, including many in full-text. It covers North American history from prehistory to present, and please note that this includes Canadian history, in spite of the database's title. America: History and Life can be accessed through the database list under the “Find” tab on the library website, www.lib.uoguelph.ca You may also be able to access it through a link in the library subject or course guide associated with your course or research topic. If you are off-campus, you may be asked to log in through the Library website before proceeding to the database. This is the main search screen for America: History and Life. Enter combinations of your search terms at the top and apply any search limits (such as date of publication) at the bottom. It’s a good idea to brainstorm a working list of a variety of terms to combine in your searches. Start by entering some of these terms. In this example, I've indicated that I want to find items that mention the words "telegraph" and "military." At the bottom of the same page, you can add any limits to your search in advance, like limit by peer-review status, limit by historical period, limit by date of publication, and more. If you don’t get the results you want, try adjusting your search terms and/or refining your search using the options in the column on the left of the page. Click on the title of the item you want to get further information and, if available, to access the full-text. Before accessing and reading the whole article, review details such as the abstract to determine if it’s going to be useful. An abstract is a short article summary. The official subject headings listed in the record are particularly useful. If you see one that’s relevant, click on it to see if there are other items classified in the same way. Links on the left-hand side of the page will indicate if the full-text is available in the database or elsewhere. If the article isn’t available in full-text in the database, click on the “Get it! Guelph” icon to check if it is available through another one of our resources. Don’t forget to try a variety of different searches using different combinations of terms to achieve different results. If you have any further questions, just ask us. For more details on how to access help, visit our website at www.lib.uoguelph.ca

Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

16:59
In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course US History #8

13:04
In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. You'll learn about Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, the elite vs rabble dynamic of the houses of congress, and start to find out just what an anti-federalist is. Start Eating Turmeric, The Result on the 30th Day Will Surprise You

12:09
How do you feel about turmeric? Not a big fan? Well, listen up because you’ll probably change your mind after hearing about these incredible health benefits of this brightly colored spice! So, what changes can you expect in your body after a month of including turmeric in your diet? A 2013 study by researchers in the Department of Oral Pathology at India’s Punjab University proved that this spice can help whiten your teeth. Known as Curcuma longa in the scientific community, Turmeric has been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties. If you’re struggling with, say, skin issues, hair loss, or even extra weight, then turmeric also can be of help! TIMESTAMPS: Your teeth will get whiter 0:59 You’ll get rid of acne 2:03 Your hair will grow much faster and thicker 3:19 It’ll strengthen your immunity 4:13 It’ll cure a sore throat 5:21 You’ll say goodbye to your cold 6:00 It’ll heal broken skin and wounds 6:33 You’ll feel less joint pain 7:24 It’ll improve your mood and stimulate brain function 8:16 It’ll help prevent cancer 9:14 Your skin will look younger 10:04 You’ll lose weight 10:59 #turmeric #turmericbenefits #curcumin Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been used for ages to treat skin conditions, but it does have backing by modern science. - A study by the Korean BioSpectrum Life Science Institute has shown that the curcumin in turmeric can prevent hair loss by strengthening the hair follicles. - According to researchers at Ohio State University, taking turmeric with your food or in the form of supplements isn’t the best for strengthening immunity since it mostly stays in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolizes quickly. - Indian scientists in the Department of Oral Pathology at Punjab University concluded that, thanks to its antimicrobial properties, turmeric extract can stop the growth of bacteria and parasites and reduce inflammation in the throat. - Turmeric’s amazing antibiotic effects and anti-inflammatory properties also make it an excellent cure for the common cold. - In 2007, researchers at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland studied turmeric’s properties as a cure for skin conditions like scleroderma, psoriasis, and even skin cancer. - In 2016, Dr. Kok-Yong Chin headed a study in the Department of Pharmacology at Malaysia’s Kebangsaan University Medical Centre to find out the effect curcumin has on joint inflammation. Arthritic patients involved in the research took extracts of curcuminoids and enhanced curcumin. - Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles asked 40 adults aged 51-84 to take curcumin twice a day. The scientists monitored their cognition with the help of memory tests and noticed a visible improvement by the end of the trial. - While there’s no 100% effective universal cure against this deadly disease just yet, it looks like you can prevent pancreatic cancer with the help of turmeric. - In 2014, scientists in the Department of Zoology at the University of Delhi tested the anti-aging properties of turmeric. They concluded that genes regulating metabolism, DNA repair, and antioxidant systems actually control human lifespan. - Curcumin alters the composition of fat cells, turning undesirable white fat cells into the healthy brown kind. The Attachment Theory: How Childhood Shapes Your Life

07:36
The attachment theory argues that a strong emotional and physical bond to one primary caregiver in our first years of life, is critical to our development. If our bonding is strong and we are securely attached, then we feel safe to explore the world. If our bond is weak, we feel insecurely attached. We are afraid to leave or explore a rather scary-looking world. Because we are not sure if we can return. Often we then don't understand our own feelings. Special thanks for our patroeon supporters: Ville Medeiros, Chutimon Nuangnit, Cedric Wang, Mike, Eva Marie Koblin, Julien Dumesnil, Mathis and the others. You are amazing !!! For those who feel like they can’t help themselves, or can’t find trust through their partners of family, we recommend looking for professional support through a therapy. If you are able to form a secure attachment to a therapist, he can become the one who provides you with that secure base. Here three of possible therapies: 1. Psychoanalysis. The aim of psychoanalysis therapy is to release repressed emotions and experiences, i.e., make the unconscious conscious. In order to do that they therapist might try to bring back some childhood memories, to work at the root cause of the problem. 2. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). CBT is a psycho-social intervention that is widely used for improving mental health. Instead of trying to bring you back in time, it aims to explain you whats going on inside your brain and how to cope with irrational feelings or fears. 3. The Hoffmann Process. This 7-8 days guided process, designed by the American psychologist Hoffmann, brings participants back into their childhood to reconnect with their parents at the time when attachment is formed. Its very intensive. A day in the life...Dr Emma Meaburn

02:05
As part of Science Week 2017, Dr Emma Meaburn from the Department of Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck gives an insight into a day in the life of a scientist. I get up at … 6am (or 6.30 am, if I am lucky), when I am woken by my children. The next two hours are a whirl of breakfast, loudness, finding lost shoes, cajoling, cuddles and probably some light bribery before I leave the house at 8.15am. I drop the youngest child off at nursery on my way to the train station, and typically arrive at Birkbeck by about 9.30am. My research … looks at the genetic contributions to individual differences in psychological traits and disorders. We all differ, and I am interested in how these differences are influenced by differences in our DNA and how the information stored in our DNA is used. I teach on … the BSc Psychology degree program, where I co-convene and co-teach a large first year ‘Research Methods’ module that provides psychology students with a basic grounding in the principles of experimental design and statistics. Undergraduate students can sometimes be surprised that research methods form a core element of the program, and we work hard to make it accessible and relevant to the students’ current knowledge and career aspirations. I also teach on the final year “Genetics and Psychology” optional module. This is always enjoyable as I get to talk about my own research findings and that of my colleagues, and expose the students to the newest methods and insights from the field of behavior genetics. I am also responsible for … quite a few things! Broadly, my job falls into three categories; research, teaching and service. As part of my research activities I am responsible for running a lab and the admin that comes with it; writing ethics applications; PhD student supervision, training and mentorship; securing funding (writing and revising grant applications); dissemination of my research via conference attendance, giving invited talks, publishing my work in peer reviewed articles and public engagement activities. Behavior genetics is a fast-paced field, and I stay informed about new developments and methods as best I can by reading the literature, speaking to colleagues and collaborators, organizing and attending conferences and (occasionally) training workshops. I also peer review grants and manuscripts; supervise undergraduate (about four per year) and graduate student research projects (about two per year); sit on the academic advisory board and postgraduate research committee, and I am a member of the management committee of the University of London Centre for Educational Neuroscience, which provides a unified research environment for translational neuroscience. My typical day … doesn’t really exist! One of the best aspects of academic life is that each day is different. If I am teaching in the evening, typically I will meet with my PhD students (or project students) in the morning where we discuss the past week’s progress, go over new results and edits of conference abstracts and manuscript drafts. Then there is at least an hour of email and admin tasks such as paying invoices, tracking lost lab orders, or hurriedly writing a PhD application, before heading to the gym for an hour of ‘me’ time. I’ll then undo all my hard work by grabbing a hearty lunch from one of the many fantastic food places around Birkbeck, before attending a departmental seminar or journal club. That leaves me with a couple more hours to squeeze in research and research admin before preparing for the evening’s class. Once the class is over (at about 8.30pm), I head back to my office for 30 minutes of emails before catching the tube home. All being well, I’ll get home around 9.30/10pm, check on my (mostly) sleeping family, and do 30 minutes of life chores before collapsing into bed. I became a scientist… because I had always loved science and by my late teens I had developed a keen interest in what was then known as the “Nature Versus Nurture’ debate. I think this interest was sparked by my own experiences and reflections as a fostered child (I was separated from my biological parents at six months of age), and when I finally studied genetics as an undergraduate student in human biology at King’s College London, my mind was made up – I was going to be a geneticist! My greatest professional achievement… has been establishing myself as a research active academic and developing my own research program, in a field where academic positions at renowned institutions like Birkbeck are few and far between and competition is fierce. I get to work in a research field that is dynamic, challenging and interesting, and in a supportive, autonomous and friendly environment. 5 Unhealthy Father-Daughter Relationship Types

09:44
Do you know that your relationship with your dad can affect your life? Fathers play a big role in shaping their daughter’s self-esteem, their perspective on the world, and how they cope with life stressors once they reach adulthood. That’s why it’s so important to build a healthy father-daughter relationship that’s based on closeness, trust, and respect. But there are some types of fathers who have missed the mark and can unintentionally affect their daughters’ development in a negative way. A study conducted in 2016 at the University of Cincinnati found that 80% of kids with authoritarian parents have at least 5 symptoms of depression. The constant criticism from the father makes the daughter develop a very low self-esteem that might even turn into self-hatred. Since the daughter has to remain silent when her father confronts her, she may become fearful of expressing her emotions in all social situations. TIMESTAMPS: The Overprotective Father 0:57 The Toxic Father 2:23 The Absentee Father 3:48 The Indulgent Father 5:23 The Authoritarian Father 6:53 #relationshipwithdad #family #parents Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - If overprotective fathers don’t allow their daughters to make mistakes, they won’t learn from them and develop confidence from that process. This causes the daughter to lack self-confidence and self-esteem. - The toxic father might not go into a rage when his daughter misbehaves, but he will use manipulation and the power of his words to cause harm. This can be in the form of constant put-downs, criticisms, or hurtful jokes at the daughter’s expense. - Researchers at Penn State University found that father rejection takes a huge toll on teenagers. According to their study, if a father rejects their sixth-grader child, then this kid will be more likely to experience an increase in social anxiety in seventh grade that can develop into loneliness by eighth grade. - Since the father isn’t setting any boundaries, the daughter can become spoiled very quickly. The daughter can feel entitled to have things always go her way. On the odd occasion that the father refuses her something, she might throw a temper tantrum. The indulgent father needs his child to approve of him. - If both mom and dad are authoritarian, the home environment can become overwhelming for any child. With an authoritarian father, the daughter grows up with a fear of making mistakes and holds deep insecurities. The daughter is expected to behave in a mature and adult way at all times. She doesn’t see her father as a source of support, but as a source of pressure. How to take efficient and neat notes - 10 note taking tips | studytee

07:38
PLEASE READ: As you'll see at about 01:40, my handwriting has changed. Before commenting/complaining about that, please read my little explanation further down 💕 Open for FAQ (will NOT be answered in comments), stationery used and contact information! ✏️ If you have a question, please read the description first! You might find your answer there :) About my handwriting: Yes, I am aware that my handwriting has changed. It doesn’t look as neat as before, but this is my real, fast handwriting. My last one probably looked better, but it was a lot slower. I realised that the only reason I kept using that handwriting was because I wanted my notes to look good, and for me that was a wrong reason. So I’ve started using my fast handwriting, and even though it might look messier, it feels so much better. I don’t have to constantly worry that my handwriting isn’t neat enough for instagram, I can write my notes a lot faster, and I get extra time which can be used for actual studying. So I’m sorry if you’re disappointed because I changed my handwriting, but the main reason I take notes is because it benefits my studies, not because people on Instagram and youtube like to see them. Starting to care less about my handwriting has made me less stressed and anxious, so for me this change is definitely for the better. I’m hoping you guys will support me on this! My handwriting is still legible after all. 😉 ——— With the handwriting business out of the way, welcome to a new video! This is kind of an updated version of my most popular video «How i take neat notes (neat and effective», and I hope that you’ll like the tips I give in this one. These are not revolutionary tips or anything, just some helpful techniques that I’ve picked up in my schoolyears☀️ Feel free to leave your own note taking tips below, and thank you for watching the video! I'm also self-studying biology and chemistry to get a solid foundation for the subjects I'll be taking in university, as well as to get some repetition so I don't forget everything I learned in high school. How old are you/where do you live/what's your name? - I prefer not to answer these questions for privacy reasons. I'm on a gap year after high school/before university so that is a good indicator for my age, I'm from somewhere in Norway, and I go by the name studytee/Tee here on the internet :) Can you send me your notes, or do you sell them? - I post my notes on Instagram, and other than that I don't share/sell them, I'm sorry! *Question/comment about my voice* - I am aware that I have a child-like voice, but that’s just the voice I was given. PHILOSOPHY: Immanuel Kant

08:13
Immanuel Kant was acutely aware of living in an age when philosophy would need to supplant the role once played by religion. This helped him to arrive at his most famous concept: the ‘categorical imperative.’ If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/o15jWG FURTHER READING “Immanuel Kant is a philosopher who tried to work out how human beings could be good and kind – outside of the exhortations and blandishments of traditional religion. He was born in 1724 in the Baltic city of Königsberg, which at that time was part of Prussia, and now belongs to Russia (renamed Kaliningrad)...” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/HnPgjd MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/8yBXZv More films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLphilosophy Do you speak a different language to English? Life Was Hard For This Single Mom. Then A Stranger Saw A Postcard In Her Home And Knew He Had To Act

05:20
Like many people, single mom Denni had decorated her refrigerator. Personal photos and university paraphernalia covered the front of her appliance. But it was one gorgeous postcard that caught a stranger’s eye – and spurred her into action. The photos taped up in her kitchen showed the highlights of a happy life, but it hadn’t been an easy one for Denni, her son and her two daughters. Her husband left all four of them when the children were just three, five and six years old.
