Safety Underground: Mining and the Miners' Lamp - Professor Frank James
A short history of the engineering and scientific force put to work to save lives underground, focussing particularly on the work of Sir Humphry Davy and George Stephenson: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/safety-underground-mining-and-the-miners-lamp Mining disasters such as those at High Blantyre in 1877 or Gresford (1934) are a reminder of the hazards of mining. Work done by Sir Humphry Davy and George Stephenson on the safety lamp will be used to illustrate the problems of taking scientific knowledge out of the controlled environments of the laboratory and putting it to practice use. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/safety-underground-mining-and-the-miners-lamp Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Underground: How to Improve Production & Operator Safety
Underground mines can be challenging and dangerous environments. Miners face a lack of fresh air, poor ventilation ad potential cave-ins as they work to access ore. Mining companies work diligently to ensure the safety of these workers, but dangers still exist. In this video, we’ll discuss the best way to protect underground workers: Removing them from the environment altogether. Using technologies like Cat MineStar™ Command for underground, miners can perform loading and dumping activities while located safely away in a remote operating station. In addition to improving safety, autonomous mining also delivers productivity improvements thanks to more accurate tunnel navigation and reduced downtime due to damage from contact with drive walls. We’ll hear a success story from a customer who is using Command for underground at a copper-gold mine in Australia.

Underground coal mine by Indian minerology
Underground coal mine :- Most coal seams are too deep underground for opencast mining and require underground mining, a method that currently accounts for about 60 percent of world coal production.[5] In deep mining, the room and pillar or bord and pillar method progresses along the seam, while pillars and timber are left standing to support the mine roof. Once room and pillar mines have been developed to a stopping point (limited by geology, ventilation, or economics), a supplementary version of room and pillar mining, termed second mining or retreat mining, is commonly started. Miners remove the coal in the pillars, thereby recovering as much coal from the coal seam as possible. A work area involved in pillar extraction is called a pillar section. Modern pillar sections use remote-controlled equipment, including large hydraulic mobile roof-supports, which can prevent cave-ins until the miners and their equipment have left a work area. The mobile roof supports are similar to a large dining-room table, but with hydraulic jacks for legs. After the large pillars of coal have been mined away, the mobile roof support's legs shorten and it is withdrawn to a safe area. The mine roof typically collapses once the mobile roof supports leave an area.

Underground Mine Construction & Development: Redpath leading the way in safety innovation
Redpath was awarded a contract to remove the old and construct a new overhead gantry crane system in an underground workshop in Queensland, Australia. Through the risk management process and industry experience there were several significant risk areas Redpath identified with the construction of the gantry crane, foremost they included generic risks such as - - Working with suspended loads; - Slinging beams and columns which were all compounded by the confined spaces of an underground mine workshop environment. Redpath's solution? A hydraulically controlled beam manipulator - The Redigrip PSM (Precision Steel Manipulator). The Redigrip can - Lift I-Beams up to SWL 1.2 Tonnes - Achieve 360 Degree rotation - 40 Degree side tilt left and right - 140mm side shift - 180 degree primary tilt - 600mm of telescopic extension - And can reach over 8 metres The Redigrip was a finalist in both the Queensland Mining Industry Health & Safety Innovation Awards 2012 and for the National Safety Council of Australia's Safety Awards of Excellence 2012 for Best Solution of an OHS Workplace Risk (medium to large businesses). For further information on the Redigrip contact - [email protected]

Salt Mining Underground 1958
Salt mines are generally thought to be relatively safe places to work (as opposed to coal mines). However tragedies can and have occurred. On March 5, 1968, 21 miners died in a fire that broke out in the Cargill salt mine on Belle Isle, Louisiana. This and other mine disasters in the late 1960s led to passage of better mine safety laws in the US. For more on this tragedy go to the article, Belle Isle Tragedy, By George Morris, Advocate staff writer, published: Mar 9, 2008 at: http://www.2theadvocate.com/entertainment/16386906.html?index=1&c=y . This clip is from the 1958 Morton Salt Company film, White Wonder, available at the Internet Archives.

Ventilation Control of Coal Dust in Mines 1980 MSHA
This 1980 MSHA film clip demonstrates various ventilation techniques to control dust including the use of proper face ventilation to effectively remove airborne dust. Over the years, some consensus has emerged on the best dust control practices. The NIOSH Publication, Handbook for Dust Control in Mining summarizes those practices and is available at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/pubs/pubreference/outputid20.htm . This handbook describes effective methods for the control of mineral dusts in mines and tunnels for different kinds of mines and mining equipment. This includes underground coal and hard-rock mines, as well as surface mines, stone mines, and hard-rock tunnels. Dust control methods described are practical and cost-effective for most mine operators. This is clipped from the 1980 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) film, Coal Dust: Hazards and Controls.

Underground Training Systems - Introduction to Underground Mining
Underground Training Systems (UTS) has been set up to offer courses in hardrock underground mining (Gold, Nickel, Copper, Diamonds and many other base metals, excluding coal). Each course has been developed using our company Core Values and Positive Tips for Safety in a Hazardous Workplace . All courses are presented by a consultant that has a W.A shift boss ticket and more than 15 years practical underground mining experience. This gives the course participants a unique opportunity to ask questions and receive experienced answers about all different aspects of mining life. The jobs are Australia wide and there are roughly 23,000 hard rock miners within the Australian industry. The W.A. the Mines Department has estimated that between 10%-15% of these workers leave the industry every year. That works out to be 2300 to 3450 people that leave the industry every year (for a number of reasons) that need to be replaced. These entry level positions are filled with new starters that are commonly referred to as Green . This is where UTS Introduction to Underground Mining course has given employers the opportunity to employ people that have the knowledge of how an underground mine works and the entry level skills that they will be required to be performed. This allows a UTS graduate to become a useful member of an underground crew in 4-7 days of being on site. Entry level jobs covered include dump truck operator, nipper, drillers offsider and service crew member . By completing Introduction to Underground Mining over three days you will have the knowledge for us to present your resume to the relevant mining companies for entry level positions as part of our Placement Program . This program has been designed to give you the best possible chance to "get your foot in the door" and helpful staff who will start the employment process once you enrol.
