The Columbian Exchange: Crash Course World History #23

12:09
In which John Green teaches you about the changes wrought by contact between the Old World and the New. John does this by exploring the totally awesome history book "The Columbian Exchange" by Alfred Cosby, Jr. After Columbus "discovered" the Americas, European conquerors, traders, and settlers brought all manner of changes to the formerly isolated continents. Disease and invasive plant and animal species remade the New World, usually in negative ways. While native people, plants, and animals were being displaced in the Americas, the rest of the world was benefitting from American imports, especially foods like maize, tomatoes, potatoes, pineapple, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and manioc. Was the Columbian Exchange a net positive? It's debatable. So debate. The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: Crash Course World History #9

10:31
The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: In which John Green teaches you about the so-called Silk Road, a network of trade routes where goods such as ivory, silver, iron, wine, and yes, silk were exchanged across the ancient world, from China to the West. Along with all these consumer goods, things like disease and ideas made the trip as well. As is his custom, John ties the Silk Road to modern life, and the ways that we get our stuff today. Jo Hannaford of Goldman Sachs’ Technology Division, points to Europe’s geography as a key driver for development and innovation in technology in the region. “You feel like [in] Europe that [the countries’] physical distance doesn’t really stop people being able to really…come together and communicate.” For more episodes of “Exchanges at Goldman Sachs” please visit us at http://www.goldmansachs.com/our-thinking/podcasts/index.html or subscribe on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/exchanges-at-goldman-sachs/id948913991 This podcast was recorded on February 1, 2019 All price references and market forecasts correspond to the date of this recording. SEE Link — Integrated Balkan Stock Exchanges Make CEE More Visible In Europe

03:34
SEE Link, a joint project of the stock exchanges in Zagreb, Sofia and Skopje, became operational at the end of March. Emerging Europe spoke to André Küüsvek, Director, Local Currency and Capital Markets Development at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, about the initiative. SEE Link is a cross border initiative integrating regional equities markets without merger or corporate integration, using only technology that will enable participating stock exchanges to remain independent yet complement and to allow investors an easier and more efficient approach to those markets through a local broker. The three national bourses will now become more visible on the map of capital markets in Central and Eastern Europe and the initiative seems attractive for others. The network will help integrate domestic stock markets with a combined equity market capitalisation of US$ 30 billion, allowing for order routing of almost 400 stocks listed on the three exchanges.

How I Trade on the Stock Market

11:29
**Read description for answers to frequently asked questions** the first stock market video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwd3C2Cq9H0 As I say many times in the video, this is simply the way that I personally trade. That does not mean that it is for everyone. There are countless different approaches that one could have to the stock market, and none of them are strictly right or wrong. Don't ever follow exactly what any one person tells you when it comes to the stock market - including me! Do your research and come to your own conclusions. QUESTIONS Q. Do you day trade? A. Essentially, no. I rarely day trade. I think that since I have started trading, I have only done 2 or 3 day trades. Q. Your chart assumes that you can identify highs and lows - how is that possible? A. It's not. My chart was a very basic version of the way in which I trade - very basic. If I could re-film the video, I would put more emphasis on identifying highs and lows - the emphasis being that you can never 100% identify them. If you trade, as I showed later in my chart, sometimes you will sell and the stock will skyrocket. Or, quite often, you will buy and the stock will plummet. It happens, and of course I experience this all the time. Q. How long do you hold stocks? A. This varies greatly, and can be anywhere from 1 day to months. On average, I probably hold stocks approximately 3 days - 1 week. Q. So, you are making this video to advise people to start trading? A. No. Absolutely not. I would be more likely to encourage people NOT to trade on the stock market than I would be to do vice versa. Q. So, you trade off your base of $10k, and live off of that? A. No. $10k is what I started with in my account two years ago. It is not what is in my account now. Q. Can you give me advice on...? A. No. Although I would love to help everyone, I am not the best means of advice for you. I am not trying to give anyone advice here - I am simply sharing a bit of insight into what my job as a stock trader looks like. I am not a licensed financial advisor, and I would not ever presume to give anyone financial advice. Please do your research and be careful! Q. You don't seem like a professional trader...? A. I am not really concerned with how professional I "seem." I am making a living, and that is the most important thing to me. I did not go to school for this, or ever take any classes on the stock market. I did my own research and taught myself all that I know about the market. I am not worried about seeming professional - I am only concerned about making money on the stock market. Q. Can you give us proof / screenshot your personal account info / banking info so that I believe you? A. No. If you do not "believe me," please don't expect me to care. Q. I want to make some quick cash. Should I invest in the stock market? A. No. Absolutely not. Q. Can you film yourself actually trading on the market? A. No - for various reasons. One, if you are imagining that my actual trading will be anywhere near as engaging as that not-very-exciting chart, you are mistaken. Perhaps if I was day trading, this would not be the case, but when I buy a stock, I simply click a button the says "buy." That's it... And then I wait for days, weeks, perhaps months. There is nothing thrilling to see here. Also, it would be a bother to block out all of my account numbers and all that. Sorry. SOCIALS Instagram - travellight21 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/travellight21/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Travellight_ http://travellight.me Why do I trade on TD Ameritrade? - They have strong research reports - They have great trading tools, such as Thinkorswim - They have a great mobile app that allows me to trade on the go - They have amazing customer service - There are no hidden fees, such as maintaining a minimum balance I explained this in the original cut of my video, but it was just getting too long! **And no, I am not sponsored in any way by TD Ameritrade, I just like their trading platform and wanted to give you guys an explanation of why that is. A lot of people also highly recommend Scottrade, which has lower fees than Ameritrade. Whatever works for you!** DISCLAIMER This video is for entertainment purposes only. UK/GERMANY: LONDON/FRANKFURT STOCK EXCHANGES MERGER

01:44
English/Nat XFA The London and Frankfurt stock exchanges have agreed to merge, the London Stock Exchange announced on Wednesday. The combination creates Europe's largest stock market and a powerful regional counterweight to Wall Street. The London exchange and Germany's Deutsche Boerse would each own 50 percent of the new entity, which is to be called i-X, short for International Exchanges. The Anglo-German merger brings to a climax two years of fitful efforts by the London and Frankfurt exchanges to combine. The headquarters for the new joint German-U-K stock exchange is to be in the city of London where shares in blue chip companies will be traded. Don Cruickshank, chairman-designate of the London Stock Exchange, will be chairman of i-X. The London Stock exchange said shares in high-tech firms would be traded in Frankfurt. The Anglo-German union also includes a formal cooperation agreement with the technology-heavy U-S Nasdaq market. The London exchange did not give specifics on this linkup with Nasdaq but said it did not involve mutual ownership. Stan Adams, Director of Advisory Services for Barclays, says that he hopes other European countries will come on board soon. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think to begin with we're going to see Germany and the U.K. involved, it'll be very quickly that we'll see France, Spain, Italy and eventually we'll see all the markets of Europe combined into one marketplace so that you'll be able to trade, everybody, all over Europe will be able to trade, all the markets in the one single spot." SUPER CAPTION: Stan Adams, Director of Advisory Services for Barclays Many brokers believe the merger will contribute to market stability. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think it will add to stability where there's more value and more money in the market and there's a greater number of decent sized companies that we can get access to in the U.K. for individuals. Mainly private clients in the U.K. don't look at European stocks so that will give greater ability for portfolios to track European markets as well." SUPER CAPTION: Matthew West, Stockbroker The merger underscores the growing power of Frankfurt as a financial center rivaling London. While the London exchange has a larger market capitalization, the Frankfurt market is more diversified and profitable. Pressure on Europe's national stock exchanges to consolidate has recently intensified due to the introduction last year of a single European currency, the euro, together with competition from U-S markets and electronic share-trading networks. Last month, stock markets in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam formed a three-way regional exchange. Organized Crime in Charge of EU Carbon Trade, Europol Says

03:09
Report by Raymond Frenken, EUX.TV Script: First, there was ClimateGate - the scandal with hacked emails suggesting scientists have abused data for research on global warming. Now, another international climate scandal is emerging that may have an impact on the talks in Copenhagen. Europes top police body Europol, the closest thing that European Union has to the American Fbi, has exposed a massive fraud with the unions official market in carbon credits, the Emission Trading System. The fraud is costing tax payers in a handful of European countries more than five billion euro - 7 billion dollars - and raises doubts about the effectiveness of carbon trading as a measure to curb emissions. Europol director Rob Wainwright issued the following statement: These criminal activities endanger the credibility of the European Union Emission Trading System and lead to the loss of significant tax revenue for governments. Police authorities in Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom have worked together in what Europol calls a process to identify and disrupt the organised criminal structures behind these fraud schemes. Lets see if we can explain the scheme, using this graphic provided by Europol. The fraud is based on a what is tax experts and investigators call as a Carroussel fraud with missing traders. This carroussel generates money by stealing value added tax from governments. The first step of the criminals is to open a trading account with a national carbon registry, in the name of a newly registered company. From there, this company buys EU emission allowances in another country on one of the six official carbon exchanges in Europe. After that, these emission allowances are moved to another country, and subsequently sold to an unregulated broker in yet another country. This broker then charges VAT on these transactions but does not pay the collected VAT to the tax authorities. Just before the tax authorities realize that this company owes them huge amounts of VAT, basically a period of a few months, the company and its owners disappear. A new company is set up, using other front men, to repeat the carroussel. Crime rings that run such schemes can have several dozen or hundreds of companies whose real owners are difficult to trace. Basically, this type of fraud is possible because European countries continue to disagree on single market tax legislation. Carroussel fraud is a constant feature in the European cross-border market and until recently only happened with shipments of valuable goods such as iPods or flat-panel tvs, not with carbon credits. Europes tax commissioner, in an interview with EUX.TV, has estimated the damage from these carroussel frauds at more than 60 billion euro per year as Euroean finance minister continue to disagree on effective measures to fight this fraud. The Emission Trading System system was set up in 2005 as part of Europes efforts to curb emissions of greenhouse gases. That topic now is at the top of the agenda at the UN Climate summit in Copenhagen this week and next. This unprecedented and massive fraud is likely to prove a major embarrasment for EU negotiators.

01:09:22
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) As the starting point for this lecture, Professor Shiller contrasts the view of economics as the theory of the allocation of scarce resources with the view of economics as the study of exchange. After a discussion of the difference between brokers and dealers, he outlines the history of securities exchanges from ancient Rome, to the Amsterdam Stock Exchange and Jonathan's Coffee House in London, until the formation of the New York Stock Exchange. He complements this historic account with an overview of securities exchanges all over the world, covering India, China, Brazil, and Mexico. An example of a limit order book allows him to elaborate on the mechanics of trading at the National Association of Securities Dealers Automatic Quotation System (NASDAQ). Subsequently, he turns his attention to the growing importance of program trading and high frequency trading, but also discusses their impact on the stock market crash from October 19, 1987, as well as on the Flash Crash from May 6, 2010. When talking about fairness in financial markets, particularly with regard to the relation between private investors and brokers, he discusses the National Market System (NMS), the Intermarket Trading System (ITS), and consolidated quotation systems. He concludes this lecture with some reflections on the operations of dealers, addressing the role of inside information and the Gambler's Ruin problem. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Regional Electricity Markets – Seven Steps to a Single European Electricity Market

02:48
Cross-border cooperation in energy is not a new idea. Historically, it is at the core of the development of the European Community. In 1951 France, West Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands decided to form the European Coal and Steel Community. They hoped that pooling vital natural resources would ‘make war not only unthinkable but materially impossible’. In 2014 the goals of cooperation in energy have changed. Member states seek to complete an internal energy market which will ensure competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply. As a small, peripheral market with a reliance on imported fossil fuels, Ireland has much to gain from the increased integration of energy markets in the EU. However, this must be a gradual process as member states remain reluctant to cede control of how they use the national energy resources which fuel their economies. Electricity remains one of last sectors without free trade in the EU. Therefore, in 2006 the European Regulators Group for Electricity and Gas (ERGEG) established seven regional electricity markets as an interim step toward a single European electricity market.1 The regional markets are as follows: 1. France-UK-Ireland, (FUI) 2. Central-East 3. Central-West 4. Central-South 5. South West 6. Baltic 7. Northern Ireland, operating as an all-island Single Electricity Market (SEM) since 2007, is part of the regional energy market covering the FUI region and cooperates with two of the biggest electricity producers in Europe: France and the UK. The governments, regulators and grid operators from these countries are working together to develop solutions for a regional market. While the target for the completion of the internal energy market is the end of 2014, Ireland has been granted an extension until 2016 to allow for transitional arrangements, due to the significant differences between the SEM and European market models. The incoming European Commission President, Jean Claude Juncker, has reaffirmed the priority of completing the internal energy market, emphasising the benefits of driving down costs and boosting growth. Meanwhile, in the wake of concerns about European energy security, the current Italian Presidency has argued that the completion of the internal energy market will increase member state solidarity, ensure safety of energy supplies and facilitate the integration of indigenous sources of energy, like renewables. However, completing the internal energy market by 2014 remains a sizeable challenge. Member states still need to increase interconnections and further harmonise their market rules. This video explains the role regional electricity markets are playing in meeting this challenge and the benefits they are expected to bring.

Here's Your Markets Playbook to Weather European Volatility, Trade Talks & More

11:48
Even though global equities markets limped into the close Tuesday, there's no need to ring the alarm bells just yet. That's the take of Alec Young, managing director for global markets research at FTSE Russell. Young told TheStreet that, despite political turmoil in Europe, this nine-year old bull market isn't going to die on a little geopolitical uncertainty. Young said that the recent return of volatility to U.S. stocks has been shock when compared to record-low-volatility 2017, but it's nothing more than a move to historical averages. When taken in the context of the last decade instead of the last 12 months, current volatility levels are far from elevated. But still, market reactions to political unrest in Italy and Spain, for example, have weighed on stocks. According to Young, international concerns can more negatively impact large-cap stocks than they can small-cap stocks. "They have less overseas exposure than their large-cap counterparts," Young said of the likes of the small-cap focused Russell 2000, which has easily outpaced the narrow gains of the broader market since the start of the year. Regardless, "The fundamentals still look solid for U.S. equities," Young said. Any recent selloffs or significant volatility spikes are a result of investors flocking to safe haven assets as a reaction to newfound risk aversion, not poor fundamentals. "The most logical conclusion I think is that investors are concerned there is a potential path to a pretty negative outcome in Italy. That doesn't mean that it's likely. I think it's probably nine to 10 times more likely that something less negative happens. But just the fact that the risk is now on the table is going to be a little bit of an overhang," Young said. The elections in Italy continue to be a source of unrest in the European Union, with many political pundits this week characterizing the elections as a referendum on Italy's EU membership. Italy has effectively been without a government since March, and the country appointed former International Monetary Fund official Carlo Cottarelli as interim prime minister this week. Italy is the euro zone's third-largest economy, meaning a significant downturn in the country's markets could have a ripple effect throughout the European Union. But that doesn't precede a battle cry for Wall Street, Young said. "One of the reasons that stocks have been so resilient in the face of all these macro issues is the fact that the corporate environment is very healthy. There's no reason to think that we're not looking at continued increases in corporate earnings as the quarters continue here," Young added. "It's actually very helpful that a lot of these global macro headline risks are coming at a time where the domestic fundamental picture is healthy," Young said. "It makes it easier to handle a lot of these potential macro risks." You can also find us on... Premier Li promotes people-to-people exchanges with Europe

Premier Li Keqiang has also been promoting people-to-people communications between China and central and eastern Europe under the 16-plus-1 mechanism. Several European countries have adjusted their visa policies toward Chinese passport holders. The mutual visa-free scheme with Serbia took effect in January 2017, and the amount of Chinese tourists to the country last year almost tripled from the year before. Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina both followed suit this year. Chinese tourists flying to central and eastern Europe totaled 930-thousand last year. That was more than triple the number five years ago. Meanwhile, Montenegro and Romania eased visa requirements for Chinese passport holders. Experts say simplified visa policies would also help advance cooperation in energy and infrastructure sectors between the countries. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Krell, President and Chief Executive Officer of ISE: "We will also move toward a programme of retention for our staff and that's just part of our overall thinking about making sure that the team stays together." 10. Wide shot of news conference STORYLINE: Two giants of derivatives trading, the US International Securities Exchange (ISE) and German-based Eurex announced their merger on Tuesday in New York City. Eurex will offer 67.50 US dollars per share for ISE stock in a deal worth 2.8 billion (b) US dollars. That represents a nearly 48 percent premium for shareholders over Friday's closing ISE price. Deutsche Boerse, which co-owns Eurex with the Swiss Stock Exchange SWX, will finance the merger through a combination of cash and debt. The acquisition would make Deutsche Boerse a major player in the US options trading business, since ISE is the largest options market in the US for individual stocks, including stock-index options. With consolidation sweeping the industry, Deutsche Boerse has been on the lookout for possible partnerships after it lost out to the NYSE Group in a bid to acquire European exchange operator Euronext and had two offers for the London Stock Exchange rebuffed. Eurex will acquire a controlling share of ISE with 50 percent plus one share of ISE's stock. The merger was made possible by the companies' similar business culture, said Andreas Preuss, Chief Executive Officer of Eurex. "It's a merger of two successful exchanges. ISE is number one in the market, Eurex is number one in Europe. They have the same business culture which helped make this deal happen," he said. Preuss said one of the objectives of the merger was to allow the companies to join together to cover more timezones across the globe, "It's a merger about the two biggest derivatives markets and now they are able to cover many time zones in Europe and the US," he said. David Krell, president and CEO of ISE, said there were no planned redundancies at management level or otherwise. "We will also move toward a programme of retention for our staff and that's just part of our overall thinking about making sure that the team stays together," he said. ISE and Eurex began talks about a merger about a year ago according to Krell. The merger which is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of 2007, still needs SEC (Securies and Exchange Commission) and shareholder approval, both of which are expected. A derivative is a financial instrument whose characteristics and value depend upon the characteristics and value of an underlier, typically a commodity, bond, equity, or currency. ISE shares rose 20.81 US dollars, or 45.6 percent, to 66.52 US dollars in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
