The top 7 things NOT to do when starting a business
* Join my BELIEVE newsletter: http://www.evancarmichael.com/newsletter/ Emil: "Hey Evan! I have been watching your videos for a while now. Hope you enjoyed your trip to Asia! I am enthusiastic about entrepreneur videos. I have searched on Youtube and Google and I always get videos/articles about what to do. I believe knowing what NOT to do is equally important. Usually, all I get is generic tips such as "dont grow too fast" but there are no concrete case studies. But when it comes to successful stories, there are specific examples we can learn from. I was thinking if maybe you can have videos/articles analysing and explaining how some real businesses failed, especially start ups. It would be great if you can use your influence to encourage entrepreneurs who have failed to share their stories with you. That way, the mistake will only be made by once because we all will have learnt from it Hopefully you'll consider my suggestion" ENGAGE * Subscribe to my channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=Modelingthemasters * Leave a comment, thumbs up the video (please!) * Suppport me: http://www.evancarmichael.com/support/ CONNECT * Twitter: https://twitter.com/evancarmichael * Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EvanCarmichaelcom * Google+: https://plus.google.com/108469771690394737405/posts * Website: http://www.evancarmichael.com EVAN * About: http://www.evancarmichael.com/about/ * Products: http://www.evancarmichael.com/zhuge/ * Coaching: http://www.evancarmichael.com/movement/ * Speaking: http://www.evancarmichael.com/speaking/ SCHEDULE * Mon - 1 Minute Mondays: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiZj-Ik9MmM2HwduoMCpvZRhd2qE22Fg- * Tues - Tech Tuesdays: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiZj-Ik9MmM3NGvdl33mEwdUdr19zti9s * Thurs - Thankful Thursdays: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiZj-Ik9MmM2Scsq-0Er3mA8U3Kqz9fiV * Fri - Famous Fridays: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiZj-Ik9MmM30QoA2ygo5RWzfQm8y7ScL * Sun - Famous Failures: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiZj-Ik9MmM2aeaKPqI5ILrNcLjbQZDob * Your Questions - Every day! 25 Traditions Sound Strange to You But Totally Normal in Other Countries
“So many countries, so many customs.” Any jet-setter will agree this good old proverb is true. In the age of globalization, going places has become an essential part of our life. We’re all well aware of the fact that while visiting a foreign country, we must obey certain local traditions and common rules. What would you do if you walked into a bathroom and instead of toilet paper, you found a bowl of water? And no instructions either! Or, what if warding off bad luck meant talking to birds at the park? Sure, these things may seem wacky to you, but they’re pretty normal customs in other countries. And some actually sound pretty fun! But in Scandinavia Austria, and Bavaria, Germany, finger pulling (or Fingerhakeln) is a competitive sport! - If you’re going on vacation and want to leave with as many good vibes as possible, sit down with your household first before you head out the door. In Russia, they believe that doing this ensures you have a good trip and wards off bad luck. - In Denmark, if it’s your 25th birthday or higher and you’re still single, your friends and family throw handfuls of cinnamon at you. - If you were to spit at your boss or a family member when you greeted them, it’d be considered pretty darn rude. But in the Maasai tribe in Kenya and northern Tanzania, spitting into their hands before a handshake is considered appropriate and respectful. - You might gift newlyweds with some sparkling new china, but in Germany, family and friends actually break dishes the night before a wedding! - In Venezuela, the early bird doesn’t necessarily get the worm. There, running late isn’t a problem the way it is in the US and other countries. When it comes to parties or even work meetings, arriving a few minutes late isn’t considered rude. - In South Africa, the tradition of chucking chairs, tables, and whatever furniture out the window onto the street for the New Year has been going strong since the end of apartheid. - Even if you’re naturally a leftie, using this hand is considered pretty rude in a lot of Middle Eastern countries. This is because the left hand is the designated “cleaning hand” in the bathroom and, therefore, it’s the dirty one. - f your biggest fear is doing your business in a restroom that’s run out of toilet paper, well…you might have some problems when visiting India. That’s because in most parts of this country, instead of toilet paper, people use water to cleanse their, uh, private areas. - In Thailand, there are tons of stray monkeys hanging around. And once a year in Lopburi, Bangkok, people dump over 6,600 pounds (3,000 kg) of fruits and veggies out for the little guys to munch on in what’s referred to as the Monkey Buffet Festival. - While we consider it bad luck to see the bride before the big day, people in Tidong, Indonesia believe using the toilet 3 days after the wedding is bad luck. - Americans are used to having copious amounts of ice in their drinks. But in many places in Europe, having little or no ice at all is the norm. - If you ever visit Fiji, you’ll likely be greeted by a cocktail containing juice from squeezed roots served in a wooden bowl known as Kava. And apparently, it has, shall we say “psychoactive effects.” Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC Photos: https://www.depositphotos.com East News ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

12 Things That Ruin a First Impression Immediately
Scientists have proven that we form our first impression about someone within the first 7 seconds of meeting them, and 55% of the first impression is based on appearance. Pay attention to 12 common things you should avoid not to ruin the first impression. In his research, psychologist William F. Chaplin found that people with a weak handshake are instantly judged as being shy, anxious, uninterested, or even completely incompetent. If you place your hands on the table, don’t squeeze them too tight or lay them flat with your palms down. This makes people feel like you want to control them. Also, don’t forget about the role that culture plays here. A 2007 study showed that people who maintain eye contact during a conversation are often seen as more confident, attentive, intelligent, and trustworthy. Try not to focus the conversation only on yourself and your issues. It’s always a good idea to be attentive to your conversation partner. Tapping can indicate nervousness, irritation, or impatience. People might even think that you’re purposely trying to irritate others or draw attention to yourself. And while cracking your knuckles can help relieve stress, it’s one of the most annoying sounds according to a survey by The New York Times. A study from the University of Essex showed that even just having one’s phone on the table next to them reduces a conversation’s quality and the participants’ engagement. So leave it in your bag or in your pocket. Running late to a meeting with people you don’t know or have a formal relationship with will shed a guaranteed negative light on you. You’ll seem like an unreliable and unorganized person that doesn’t respect people enough to value their time. Music: About That Oldie Vibe Tracks Josefina Quincas Moreira Merengue de Limon Quincas Moreira Pink Lemonade Silent Partner https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS A weak handshake 0:38 Keeping your hands in the wrong position 1:25 Chewing gum 2:15 Avoiding eye-contact 3:01 Playing with your hair 3:41 Picking the wrong conversation topics 4:25 Invading someone’s personal space 5:07 Making distracting noises 5:49 Constantly checking your phone 6:34 Forgetting people’s names 7:23 Being late 8:00 The wrong attire 8:47 SUMMARY -If you wanna give the right impression of confidence and capability, remember to grip the other person’s hand firmly and for no longer than 2 seconds. -Put your hands on your lap if you want, but never keep them in your pockets because this gives the impression that you’re hiding something. -Chewing on gum makes you look immature, self-centered, and somewhat low-brow. -Don't be afraid to lock eyes with another person from time to time instead of constantly looking around, especially when you meet them for the first time. -If you tend to play with your hair when you’re nervous, try to kick this habit, you could be sending them the wrong message. -Play it safe and avoid the general “taboo” topics out there. They include health problems, money, religion, politics, or personal problems and complaints. -When it comes to meeting someone for the first time, keep a minimum of 4 feet between the two of you. -It can be nearly impossible to control nervous tapping, but you have to try, especially during important meetings or presentations. -Even if you’re just checking the time on your screen, it comes off as extremely impolite when you do it during a conversation. -Immediately repeate someone’s name after you’ve been introduced. In case you forget the name, just play it cool and try to avoid using phrases where you have to name the other person. -Leave your house in enough time so that you don’t have to run to your meeting. You’ll be all disheveled and unfocused, and that looks bad too. -If you’re meeting somebody for the very first time, again, especially in more formal situations, try to be conservative in your choice of clothing, be polished, and don’t use heavy perfume or tons of makeup. While there are still some uses for it in an office-setting, technological advances are sending the fax machines to the same pasture as pagers, land-line telephones, and disposable cameras. Even if this is the last we hear of the beeps and bops that echo as an incoming fax is transmitted, the fax machine had a very long life – an amazing 171 years to be exact. Yes, the fax machine was invented in 1843, before the Model-T was even a dream, before the telephone was invented, and even before the American Civil War broke out. The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course US History #8
In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. You'll learn about Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, the elite vs rabble dynamic of the houses of congress, and start to find out just what an anti-federalist is. What HR Managers Learn About You By Looking at Your Clothes
If you want to get your dream job, it’s crucially important to make the best possible first impression on the recruiter, and everything, including your style, means a lot. There are five vital things you should know that hiring professionals use to form their opinions about you and decide if you will fit into the corporate culture and get the job or not. Sherry Maysonave, head of Empowerment Enterprises, an image consulting firm based in Austin, Texas, says that the first impression happens in less than 30 seconds and it’s based entirely on your attire. Using the color of your clothes, you can influence other people however you want. Pastel colors in clothes and makeup can help you win other people’s trust. The most important thing is not to overdo it. Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview, unless you’re aiming for a creative job. The color red represents the life force and the inclination to be successful and efficient. Business suits are not always the best choice for a job interview because the impression you may give the employer is that you are “overqualified.” A tasteful statement dress that doesn’t reveal your neckline and ends around 1 inch above the very top of your knee will do just fine. Your attire should be as close to the company dress code as possible. People are more eager to accept other people who are like them, so the more you look like the other employees, the easier it is for an HR manager to imagine you working with them. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS What the colors of your clothes say about you 0:33 What the style of your clothes says about you 3:21 What your brands say about you 5:07 Illustrative details 5:47 How well can you fit into the corporate culture 6:52 SUMMARY -Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview. If you choose clothes with contrasting colors, you could make a powerful and dominant impression. The worst color choice for a job interview, according to studies and opinions of specialists, is orange — it’s often associated with something unprofessional. -A business quit is the perfect choice if a manager is hiring for a senior-level position, a flower print dress won’t do in this case. But if you are looking for a job teaching children or a creative job, this type of attire is not just appropriate, but also preferable. -It’s better to impress your prospective employee with your professional achievements and attitude to work than with luxury brand logos. -Bad manicure, old clothes, and other little flaws, can make a very negative impression. Wear small and elegant pieces of jewelry like small earrings, bracelets, and watches. Your bag should have a clear shape. -Use social media to find out all about the company dress code and try to look like the other employees at the interview. Scientists Say That Being Forgetful Is a Sign That There Is Something Unusual About Your Brain
You can now join Hulu starting at $5.99/ month! Click the link below to sign up! http://bit.ly/HuluVideo The human body is an amazing machine. The way our organs work can be a mystery, but doctors are working hard to find answers to questions that we don't yet know. One of the most mysterious parts of the body is the brain. There are so many unanswered questions about how it works that we may never know all that there is to know. Each day, we are learning more. Scientists say that being forgetful is a sign that there is something unusual about your brain. The hippocampus is located near the temporal lobes. It is the link to our memories and our feelings. Memories play a crucial part in our daily lives. You need memories to remember to pick up your dry cleaning. You need memories to remember the people you love. Without memories, you wouldn't be the person you are. Memories are almost like looking at a photo album full of events from your life. The hippocampus is the part of the brain that helps you retain both long-term and short-term memories. Alzheimer's disease affects your memory. Over time, you forget your loved ones as well as who you are. One of the first parts of the brain to be damaged by the disease is the hippocampus. Damage to the hippocampus can result in amnesia, which is a condition where you don't have memories of the past. It can also make it difficult for you to form new memories of times, locations, or events. Blake Richards is an expert on the brain, and he co-wrote a paper about memories that was published in June 2017. The other author who worked on the study with him was Paul Frankland. Their in-depth study on memory and the brain brought some very interesting things to light. There are some people who are more forgetful than others. Some people can keep their appointments and obligations organized in their head without missing a thing. Others need to set alarms on their phone, use sticky notes, and write every little thing down just to remember what they need to do that day. Dr. Richard and Dr. Blake think that they understand why this is a little bit better. The doctors compared our brain to a cell phone. Cell phones only have so much memory; therefore, if you want to have enough room to store important information, you need to clear out things that aren't important. If you find that you are more forgetful than your friends and family members, it could be due to the fact that you have too much information in your brain that you really don't need. When you do need to remember something such as a doctor's appointment or to stop at the supermarket on your way home, there isn't enough memory left to hold these memories. Now that we have access to the world wide web right in our pockets, our lives are a bit easier. If you want to know who won the game last night, you can check on your phone. If you want to know who the 10th President of the United States was, you can check your phone. Now that you don't need to hold onto this information because you can check your phone, you can free up space in your brain for memories that you do need to handle your responsibilities. If you want to free up room in your hippocampus, you don't need to stop reading and stop learning. According to the two doctors, regular exercise can clear your brain of any unnecessary information. This will make room for more memories. This is because exercise increases the number of neurons in the hippocampus. You don't need to worry that exercising too much will erase all of your memories because that isn't possible. It will just free up space by removing memories that you don't really need, such as the menu of your favorite restaurant that went out of business five years ago. This is a memory that you don't need, and new memories can take its place. The next time your family makes fun of you because you walk into a room and forget what you went in there for, you have a reason. If you forget to get the mail before pulling into the driveway, you have a reason. You just have too many random facts and memories stored in your hippocampus. If your forgetfulness becomes too severe, you should see a doctor. It could be a sign of a serious problem. If it is minor forgetfulness, you are just too smart for your own good. Paradigm shift: Sports law in the age of business and human rights - recorded roundtable discussion
This is a recording of a LawInSport webinar that took place on the 2nd May 2018 that discussed the developments in the application of international human rights law within sport. Recent human rights commitments by sports governing bodies are the latest progression of the 2011 United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), the standard which also guided the development of the 2017 Universal Declaration of Player Rights. These developments mark a paradigm shift with far-reaching implications for sports governing bodies, athletes, commercial partners, governments and lawyers. The webinar features an interactive discussion on the implementation of this emerging field of law and practice, building on two recent LawinSport articles: "A guide to the World Players Association’s Universal Declaration of Player Rights" by Matthew Kaiser and “Sport’s human rights requirements: an opportunity and challenge for sports lawyers as well as sports governing bodies” by Brendan Schwab. SPEAKERS Brendan Schwab, Executive Director, World Players Association, UNI Global Union Gigi Alford, Head of Sport and Human Rights, World Players Association, UNI Global Union (also, Coordinator of the Sport & Rights Alliance) Matthew D. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/yZOzTc FURTHER READING “Society takes the business of making money very seriously indeed. Much of our education system is geared towards giving people the skills to get a good job and a steady income. By contrast, very little attention is given to how to spend money well – by which we mean, in ways that stand a chance of properly increasing our sense of well-being and therefore justifying the sacrifices that went into earning the cash. The race to save endangered foods
Wild animals aren’t the only ones facing extinction. Join the Video Lab! http://bit.ly/video-lab We’re letting foods we’ve eaten for thousands of years disappear from farmers’ fields, and from our plates. Saving them isn’t just a matter of cultural preservation. In the next 30 years, we’re going to need to learn how to feed more people on a hotter planet, and the more genetic varieties we lose, the harder it’ll be to adapt. To learn more about the foods facing extinction in the US and around the world, check out the Ark of Taste, a project of Slow Food USA. Journalist Mark Shapiro’s book, Seeds of Resistance, goes into much more detail about the risk that genetic homogeneity poses to our food supply. He also profiles some of the efforts, many led by indigenous communities, to preserve older seed varieties. For more on seed relabeling, check out the Farmers Business Network’s 2018 Seed Relabeling Report. The chart on declining global yields for corn, wheat, and rice comes from an article in the academic journal Disasters and Climate Change Economics from agricultural economists Mekbib G. Haile, Tesfamicheal Wossen, Kindie Tesfaye, and Joachim von Braun. Their prediction model takes into account both climate change and price volatility, which is why their estimates are higher than those of some other researchers. I Googled My Parents And Regretted It Badly

We all are aware of the great impact that the internet has had on our lives nowadays. It has changed my life dramatically as well. I wanna tell you now about the most awful truth that was revealed to me on the internet. I was born into a family of two amazing historians and archaeologists, who were really into their work. We've always lived out of suitcases and trunks because my parents took part in excavations all over the world. It was amazing to move from one ancient cultural place to another and to learn about new people, their culture, their language, and their history. Of course it was hard to get used to a new home, school, and lifestyle, and deep inside I hoped we would settle somewhere one day. And besides, I never had those normal things that most kids my age had and used every day. We never had a TV or the internet. In some places we couldn't even use our phones because there was no service, but it never actually bothered me much. I always used to think that I had a very happy childhood. But everything changed one day. We lived in a small village in India, and my parents were working day and night. They would leave early in the morning and come back home very late. Once my mother came back alone. She looked really worried and nervous and she told to me that my dad had set off on an extremely important business trip and that she would have to join him soon, and that I couldn't go with them. I was going to be staying with my grandparents. She said we were leaving immediately and that I had to go pack as quickly as I could. Shock didn't even begin to describe it all. Nothing like that had ever happened before. We flew out on a red-eye to Austin, the city where my grandma and grandpa lived. Sure, I was excited to see my grandparents, but even though my mom had tried to persuade me that everything was OK, I still had some worries. I had a wonderful time at grandma and grandpa's, but my mom literally left the same day that we had arrived. She promised that they would come for me in two weeks, but it never happened. My grandparents told me that mom and dad had to work on something really important and they would be coming a little later than they had expected. And also my grandma said that my parents' business trip was not a reason for me to lie around all day. She told me that my parents had wanted me to go to boarding school. That was really frightening! I have never gone to a big, modern school in a big American city! But I tried to persuade myself that it was just going to be a new gripping experience. So, I waved goodbye and set off for boarding school. It turned out to be so unusual and strange at first. The school was enormous and there were electronic displays everywhere. All my classmates were always staring at their phones or discussing subjects that I couldn't even have a conversation about. I would often hear giggles behind my back when I tried to study on the computer in the library or when I asked some stupid questions about the things that are pretty common in the modern world. I wished they would ask about African tribal customs or ask me to speak Mandarin Chinese. The only person I managed to make friends with was Olivia, my roommate. She was so amazed by the fact that I'd spent my whole life away from the civilized world. She would ask me questions all night long, to the point that we both were sleepy before our lessons the next day. But she also tried to get me involved in everything that was going on at school and to make me more... modern. She helped me with all the devices and told me which was more important – she even taught me how to use the internet. My parents have always been pretty conservative and told me that there was nothing special about it. They encouraged me to read books instead. But I felt like a completely new world had opened up for me. I could look up any information there to learn anything that I wanted. I started to spend a lot of time on the internet, I made new friends, and became part of my school community. Time was going by, but I still had not heard from my parents. I never even spoke to Olivia about them until it was time for our holiday break. She told me she was going to spend her holidays in the mountains with her parents and asked me: “Where are you going, Kiera? Where are your mom and dad going to take you this time?" I burst into tears and told her the whole story. But Olivia didn't seem to be discouraged. She said: "Come on, we've got the internet! If your parents are famous archaeologists, we can easily find them! Let's look it up there!" So, we went to the library and started the search. And it didn't take long. Don't Be Afraid of Risky Business
Most people have been programed since an early age that risks are scary. It's not the risk that smart people get focused on, it's the reward that comes from the risk. This world only rewards you through adversity. The sooner you realize that the better off you'll be. Most of our parents didn't take risks. They didn't have access to the internet to get information like we do. I've risked it all to get where I am and I'll risk it all to get more. That's the game we play here on Earth whether you like it or not. In reality people take risks every day. They risk their health, their life, but they don't take the risks that matter. Reprogram your mind around risks and take some. The reward is just outside of the risk. Want to learn how you can cash in on selling sales funnels? How BIG is Microsoft? | ColdFusion
Microsoft has become one of the largest and well known companies on the planet, but how did they start, what's their story and just how big are they today? In this video we'll take a look. #Microsoft #History #Size Garry Kildall story: https://youtu.be/sDIK-C6dGks Correction, it was a mistake to refer to the PDP-8 and those other computers in the 1960s as "microcomputers", these were mini-computers. Microcomputers were only possible after Intel's introduction of the CPU in 1973. Sorry about that. 15 Examples of Japanese Etiquette That Will Drive You Crazy
We've put together some mind-blowing rules of courtesy from Japan. Breaking them would seriously offend your Japanese friends or colleagues. Have you ever dreamt of visiting Japan? Seriously, who hasn’t? It is famous for its high-speed trains, colorful cherry blossom and kimonos, yummy sushi and incredible etiquette rules. Apparently, there is a ceremony and a set of rules for even the most routine things in the Land of the Rising Sun. TIMESTAMPS Addressing people 0:46 Exchanging business cards 2:06 Giving praise 2:56 Punctuality 3:45 In an elevator 4:30 Subways 5:09 Touching 5:38 Keeping it clean 6:04 Eating outside 6:51 Alcoholic drinks 7:57 Money 8:34 The art of sitting properly 9:09 Gifts 9:40 Bowing 10:42 Taking leave 11:33 SUMMARY - To address people by name is not enough in Japan. Our usual Miss and Mister last name won’t work either. And even the respectful title “-san“ is only the tip of the iceberg. There are actually more appropriate suffixes for addressing or referring to different people. - Exchanging business cards is a whole ritual. Make sure your card’s front side is facing your counterpart. Offer it with both hands. If your rank is lower than your partner’s, hold the card lower than they do. - The Japanese believe that "You can easily break a single arrow, but not ten in a bundle." In other words, group solidarity is much more important than individual success to them. - Timekeeping means so much to the Japanese they are surrounded by clocks. Every park, store and even many of the billboards have clocks in them. When a train is one minute late, the railway company will make an announcement with their sincere apologies. - If you are a tourist in Japan, try not to be the first to enter an elevator! Unless you really want to be the captain. The position is not paid though, and you don’t get a cool captain’s hat. - On the subway, there are some restrictive rules that the Japanese are expected to follow: talking is not allowed (on the phone as well), and it’s impolite to stare at others. - In Japan, it’s rude to look people in the eyes, let alone touch them. This country is not very large, so every Japanese person respects the personal space of others. - If you visit a Japanese home, prepare to take your shoes off before you enter. You will get slippers instead. - One thing to remember here is that you can’t bring your own food or drinks to the stall (which makes sense) and you can’t occupy your table for too long as there are other people waiting. - The Japanese have a strange attitude toward money: for some reason, they are embarrassed to show it in public. Therefore, money envelopes decorated in a traditional manner are very popular here. - If you are a tourist or a senior and spread out your legs, you’ll certainly get away with it, and no one will say anything. But it would be unimaginably inappropriate for a Japanese person to sit so. - You have to be very careful if you want to give someone flowers in Japan. Lilies, lotus blossoms, camellias and any white flowers, in general, are reserved for funerals. Potted plants will not be appreciated because of superstitions. - The art of bowing is so important in this country that children learn it at an early age. - In Japan, a customer or business partner is almost a god and is treated with incredible respect. When they leave, the whole company follows them to the door or elevator and keeps bowing until the doors are closed. Jeremy Rifkin on the Fall of Capitalism and the Internet of Things
Economic theorist and author Jeremy Rifkin explains his concept of The Internet of Things. Rifkin's latest book is The Zero Marginal Cost Society: The Internet of Things, the Collaborative Commons, and the Eclipse of Capitalism (http://goo.gl/4estV2). Don't miss new Big Think videos!  Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Transcript -- We are just beginning to glimpse the bare outlines of an emerging new economic system, the collaborative commons. This is the first new economic paradigm to emerge on the world scene since the advent of capitalism and socialism in the early 19th century. So it's a remarkable historical event. It has long-term implications for society. But what's really interesting is the trigger that's giving birth to this new economic system. The trigger is something called zero marginal cost. Now, marginal costs are the costs of producing an additional unit of a good and service after your fixed costs are covered. Business people are all aware of marginal costs, most of the public isn't. But this idea of zero marginal cost is going to dramatically intimately affect every single person in the world in the coming years in every aspect of their life. There's a paradox deeply embedded in the very heart of the capitalist market system previously really undisclosed. This paradox has been responsible for the tremendous success of capitalism over the last two centuries. But here's the irony, the very success of this paradox is now leading to an end game and a new paradigm emerging out of capitalism is collaborative commons. Let me explain. In a traditional market, sellers are always constantly probing for new technologies that can increase their productivity, reduce their marginal costs so they can put out cheaper products and win over consumers and market share and beat out their competitors and bring some profit back to investors. So business people are always looking for ways to increase productivity and reduce their marginal cost, they simply never expected in their wildest dreams that there would be a technology revolution so powerful in it's productivity that it might reduce those margins of cost to near zero making goods and services essentially free, priceless and beyond the market exchange economy. That's now beginning to happen in the real world. The first inklings of this zero margin cost phenomenon was with the inception of the World Wide Web from 1990 until 2014. We saw this zero marginal cost phenomenon invade the newspaper industry, the magazine industry and book publishing. With the coming of the World Wide Web and the Internet all of a sudden millions of people, then hundreds of millions of people, and now 40 percent of the human race with very cheap cell phones and computers they're sending audio, video and texting each other at near zero marginal cost. So what's happened is millions of consumers became prosumers with the advent of the Internet. And so they're producing and sharing their own videos, their own news blogs, their own entertainment, their own knowledge with each other in these lateral networks at near zero marginal costs and essentially for free bypassing the capitalist market, in many instances altogether. This zero marginal cost phenomena, as it invaded the information industries, wreaked havoc on big, big industries. Newspapers went out of business; they couldn't compete with near zero marginal costs. Magazines went out of business. And my own industry publishing has been just wracked by free e-books and free knowledge and information. But, you know, the strange thing about it is at first a lot of industry watchers said this is a good thing because if we give out more and more information goods free and people are producing and sharing it free, these freemiums will stimulate people's appetite to want premiums and then upgrade this free goods and information by getting more customized information. I'll give you an example. Musicians give away their music free when they started to see this happen hoping that they would get a big loyal fan repertoire and then their fans would be enticed to go to their concerts and pay premium in order to be there in person. And then, of course, we saw this with newspapers. The New York Times will give you ten free articles a month, freemiums, hoping that you'll then upload upgrade to premiums and by their subscription service. It didn't happen on any large scale. This was very naïve by industry watchers. Sure, some people have moved from freemiums to premiums but when more and more information goods are out there nearly free shared with each other, music, film, arts, information and knowledge, attention span is not there to then want to go to the premiums when you have so much available already in the freemiums. 25 Etiquette Rules Every Lady Should Know
In the age of gender equality, some may consider “ladylike” or “gentlemanly” conduct old-fashioned, snobbish, or just plain unnecessary. But there are still those of us who want to show sophisticated and refined behavior. In this video, we’ll tell you about all the rules of ladylike behavior that are necessary to know in order to be revered by those around you and make your life more comfortable. And for the gentlemen out there feeling left out, you can learn from some of these too! TIMESTAMPS When you have guests 1:03 When you are a guest 1:18 In a restaurant 1:42 Communication rules 2:37 Table manners 3:00 General rules 3:58 Public coatrooms 4:27 Car etiquette 5:05 - If guests come to your home for the first time, show them where the bathroom is so they can freshen up. After that, you can invite them to join the others. - Bring a small gift for the host. It doesn't have to be anything expensive. Try a bottle of wine, a box of cookies, or perhaps something for their vacation home or hobby. - If you need to brush your hair, do it in the ladies' room. Nobody wants to find a hair on their plate or on the table. - Don't forget about etiquette rules at home. For instance, it’s rude to shout to another person from a different room. Besides, you might get used to doing this, and it’ll make guests feel uncomfortable. - Don't take forever choosing the best piece of food on the serving plate. Take the nearest piece to you. You wouldn't want to give the impression of being selfish and greedy, would you? - If you’re on a low-sitting chair, don't cross your legs. Hold your knees together and lean them to the side. This is called “the Duchess Slant”. You can, however, cross your legs at the ankles, also known as “the Cambridge Cross”. Are there any other etiquette rules you consider really important? Then tell us about them in the comments section! SUMMARY So if you feel that you’re a real lady inside but are just a bit confused by all the intricacies of proper behavior, don't worry! Etiquette rules are quite simple if you just give them a try and incorporate them into your lifestyle. Plus, let’s be honest, no matter what gender you are, nobody wants to come off as uncivilized or rude to others! The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. Collagen Supplements: What's the Hype All about? // SPARTAN HEALTH 030
The popularity of collagen is skyrocketing. It’s especially effective in compensating for problems related to our bones and our skin as we age. Although human beings start out making collagen naturally, as people get older, they become less capable of absorbing nutrients or synthesizing them. In that case, collagen-rich foods and supplements can compensate for deficiencies. Collagen is also the most abundant protein in your body so you might want to know a bit about it. Collagen can help a lot with arthritis, a painful disease in which the body has an autoimmune response against its own cartilage. There’s a few theories as to why this helps relieve joint pain. One is that it might accumulate in the cartilage and stimulate production of more cartilage. Another, is that that this supplementation might not replace collagen due to the autoimmune response. Instead, it may lessen the severity of the autoimmune response itself by increasing the body’s tolerance of (or familiarity with) collagen through repeated exposure! Sarcopenia is losing muscle mass (often as we grow older.) This condition increases the possibility of falls and bone breaks. Luckily, there are ways to reduce the rate of this loss. A recent study noted that a combination of weight training and the use of collagen supplemention can help. In that study, a group taking collagen derived from chickens increased their muscle strength and their fat free muscle mass at a much higher rate than the control group. Finally, collagen can also help with maintaining the elasticity of your skin. It’s a common problem: aging skin can get wrinkly. While the sun has its own impact on your skin, aging alone can decrease the quality and the quantity of collagen your skin uses. Oral administration of bovine collagen can compensate for those decreases and help maintain a youthful look. There are collagen supplements that are widely available. One of the most familiar might be bone broth, which takes collagen out of the bones of chicken, fish or beef. You’re right to be concerned about what exactly is the source of that collagen. Supplements using animal parts from cows or ground up hooves might make consumers think twice. You’ll feel more assured if you look for companies that acquire their collagen (bones and tissues) from cage-free, free-range, and antibiotic-free sources. Collagen: “Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, found in the bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. It is the substance that holds the body together. Collagen forms a scaffold to provide strength and structure. Endogenous collagen is natural collagen, synthesized by the body. Exogenous collagen is synthetic. It comes from an outside source, such as supplements.” (Medical News Today) LINKS & RESOURCES: “Sarcopenia with Aging,” Web MD, June 30, 2019, https://www.webmd.com/healthy-aging/guide/sarcopenia-with-aging#2, accessed April 2019. “Chicken capsules good for aching joints, arthritis study finds,” Science Daily, https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/11/091130192915.htm, accessed April 2019. 10 Amazing Elon Musk Inventions You Probably Didn't Know About
What are all the products that Elon Musk actually invented or brought to life? For starters, there's Teslaquila but I bet you don't know all 10! Elon Musk is the co-founder and CEO of Tesla Inc.; founder, CEO, and lead designer of SpaceX; and founder of The Boring Company—among his many other various titles. Musk wears a lot of hats, and he seems to operate best this way. While he wouldn't wish his insane work schedule upon his worst enemy, he has become a leader in innovative technologies and has brought many of his wild ideas to life. For example, The Boring Company was created after Musk tweeted out that he was going to make his own tunnel boring machine because he was so tired of dealing with traffic. After the tweet was sent, he realized how good of an idea that was and founded the company on the same day. Focused on building tunnels underground, The Boring Company is looking to alleviate traffic in highly-congested urban cities by putting the highways below street level. Then there's Teslaquila, a distilled agave liquor that Tesla submitted a trademark application for after Elon tweeted about it as a joke. We're still waiting for it to officially become a reality, but the Tesla CEO did share a picture of what the bottle is going to look like. As you can probably tell, Musk hashes out his best ideas on Twitter. But it's the fact that he's able to then bring these ideas to life that makes him stand out from the rest. Perhaps the coolest thing that he's been working on is SpaceX's Super-Heavy Starship, a reusable rocket-spaceship duo that will eventually be used to colonize Mars. While the naysayers believe that it can't be done, Elon has a plan—and a determination—that's hard to argue with. SpaceX is already the only private company that's able to return a spacecraft from low Earth orbit, and we can't wait to see what else the company can achieve with a little help from Elon's billions. Proceed to say aloud the name of the color in which each of the words on the list is written. Expect the going to be difficult at first since the sections responsible for text perception and color perception are located in different hemispheres of the brain. - Exercise #2. Focus on the number 19 at the center of the square. Your goal is to find the number 1 and then all the remaining numbers in ascending order, fixing your gaze on each in turn. - Arrange the fingers of the right hand so as to make the ‘peace’ sign while simultaneously making the ‘OK’ sign with your left hand. Then change the arrangement of the fingers so that your left hand shows ‘peace’ and your right hand shows ‘OK.’ - For this exercise, you’ll need two sheets of paper and a pair of easy-to-use writing utensils. When everything is ready, start drawing different geometric shapes with both hands at once. - Try to perform mundane, everyday rituals (such as brushing your teeth or combing your hair) using your nondominant hand. - While taking a shower or performing other routine activities, do everything with your eyes closed. - Frequently change the routes you use for commuting to work, going to the shops, or reaching other regular destinations. - While watching a movie, try turning off the sound and relying on the actors’ gestures and movements to guess what they are talking about. Never Do These Things in Foreign Countries
If you don’t want to be in one of those, or better yet featured on YouTube as “that crazy tourist,” fined or even arrested, pay attention to our list of do’s and don’ts accurate in different countries of the world. “So many countries, so many customs.” Any jet-setter will agree this good old proverb is true. In the age of globalization, going places has become an essential part of our life. We’re all well aware of the fact that while visiting a foreign country, we must obey certain local traditions and common rules. Failing to do so has given a rich ground for many jokes. TIMESTAMPS Russia 0:54 Chile 1:44 Singapore 2:18 India 3:05 Japan 3:29 Mexico 4:07 New Zealand 4:39 Norway 5:25 Turkey 5:49 United Kingdom 6:29 Ireland 7:03 Germany 7:35 Kenya 8:26 Malaysia 9:16 Korea 9:35 SUMMARY - If you want to surprise your Russian girlfriend or your business partner, never give an even number of flowers as a gift. Even numbers of flowers are for grieving and funerals. - Manners matter more to the people of Chile than to other South Americans. It is extremely important not to eat anything with your fingers. - Chewing gum, for example, is banned in Singapore, so you’d better leave it at home before getting on the plane. If you break the gum rule for the first time, you may be fined for up to a $1000. - When in India, you have to keep your private life to yourself and your emotions under control. No matter how much you want to show affection to your special someone, never kiss them in public. - Similar to India, public demonstration of affection is not acceptable in Japan. Remember, there is no hugging, or even worse, kissing, in public! - A good piece of advice will be to stay as thick skinned as possible since Mexicans love making jokes and never miss a chance to do so. Don’t take things too personally. - Remember the difference between “aussies” and “kiwis.” Never mix them up! In case you didn’t know: the “aussies” stand for Australians, and the “kiwis” – for New Zealanders. - When in Norway, don’t ask questions concerning church. This may be taken for disrespect. Many people here don’t attend church, and those who do will want to keep it to themselves. - An essential thing to remember before going to Turkey is not to give anyone the OK sign. It might seem like a sign of approval to you but is considered an obscene gesture for the Turks. - British people like their pudding fresh and their queues well-organized. Don’t jump the queue. Or expect to be judged by the locals. - Do not try to play it cool and sound like Irishmen. For Irish people there is no such a thing as Irish accent; they recognize and divide accents depending on the region of Ireland they come from. - Don’t stare at people. Germans might look very attractive but try to resist the temptation of staring at Fraus on the metro. Only poorly educated and crazy people do that here. - Don’t show disrespect for religion. No matter what their religion may be, Kenyans are very devout. - For Malaysians, this is “the home of the soul” and the most sacred part of the body. Keep yourself from running your fingers through people’s hair, especially babies. - If you want to have good manners in Korea, use two hands when handing over money. When you pay for things, pass on your cash or credit card with both hands. It’s a sign of respect. Do you know any other things that are prohibited in foreign countries? 11 Secrets to Memorize Things Quicker Than Others
We learn things throughout our entire lives, but we still don’t know everything because we forget a lot of information. Bright Side will tell you about 11 simple memorizing tips that will help you remember everything and improve your memory. TIMESTAMPS Why we forget things 1:04 How to remember everything 2:00 How to memorize something quickly 2:30 How to memorize something for a long time 3:20 Try to understand what you learn 4:17 Learn the most necessary information 5:11 Serial position effect 5:45 Interference theory 6:06 Learn opposite things 7:22 Build your own «mind palace» 7:22 Use «nail words» 8:19 Make up stories 8:40 Use a tape recorder 9:10 Visualize 9:51 Choose only the best materials 9:59 SUMMARY - Your brain is like a hard drive — the space is limited. Remember Sherlock Holmes? He couldn’t name all the planets of the Solar system — this was not because he missed school or something like that, but because he was too smart to have such irrelevant information in his memory. He deliberately erased facts he would never need. This is what your brain does: it protects you from overloading with information. That’s why all new data is stored in the short-term memory, not the long-term one. So, if you don’t repeat it or use it, you forget it very quickly. A German psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus researched the memory and its mechanisms. He described the Forgetting Curve which shows that just one hour after learning something new we forget more than half of the learned information. One day later we remember only about 30% percent. Well, you see where this is going. - There is a memorization technique called «Spaced repetition». To keep some information in your head for a longer time, you need to try to put it into your long-term memory. Forced memorization is not very effective in this case because your brain can’t make sense of the information quickly and form strong associations. Here it all depends on the reason why you are learning something. - To memorize something quickly, repeat the information right after learning it. The second repetition should be after 15-20 minutes. You don’t need to return to the information between repetitions — just rest and do something different. Let your brain relax. Repeat the learned material the third time after 6-8 hours. And you should have the final repetition 24 hours after the first contact with the information. Do you know any other memorizing tips? If yes, share them in the comment section below!
