A Career in Teaching - Resource Teacher in Learning and Behaviour (JTJS62012)

08:13
Abby from Bream Bay College joins Kerrie Lomas to find out about the role of a Resource Teacher: Learning and Behaviour (RTLB). Kerrie explains her varied role involves supporting teachers and working with students who may have learning or behavioural problems reach their full potential. Kerrie moved into this role after a career as a primary and secondary school teacher and after gaining additional qualifications. She works with four primary and one secondary school in the Northland region and could be assisting students, teachers, schools or communities in her role. At One Tree Point School, Kerrie and Abby meet with a teacher who Kerrie has been working with who wants to find alternatives to using his voice in the classroom to direct his students. A session around non-verbal cues was undertaken and implemented and Kerrie is keen to find out if that has helped. Communication, listening to others, being open to new ideas and a knowledge of current research are just some of the skills needed for this role which requires a minimum of five years teaching experience and a post-graduate qualification. 18:54
Are you new to teaching, or about to start your first year of teaching? I have made a video all about what I wish I had known as an NQT. The video is split into resource suggestions, what to buy as a teacher and what to avoid. I then discuss apps that are useful for new teachers (NQTs) and how I use them as a teacher. I also discuss the suggestions of qualified teachers and what they wish they had known during their first year of teaching. I remember my first year of teaching so well, and I hope I have shared some helpful apps, resources and ideas that might be useful during your first term. I hope this will be helpful for those who are new to teaching - Please share with other new teachers and comment extra helpful resources or apps below. Primary Science - Classroom Organisation

19:47
This video considers different organisational strategies for teaching science in the primary classroom. These include managing whole class introductions and practical investigations as well as different types of group work. Advantages and disadvantages of each organisation are presented. Viewers are encouraged to think about how to choose the most appropriate strategy. The video particularly focuses on the need for organisation before a lesson and how the teacher might optimise the learning and assessment of the children during the activities. The video is illustrated with a variety of classroom examples. Types of Organisation 1: Whole Class - Introduction, practical activity, sharing science books, demonstration, drawing the lesson together 2: Group Work - Groups doing different practical activities, circus of different activities, one group only doing science Think about - Making the lesson relevant and stimulating. What needs to be done before the lesson. What equipment is available. How can it be organised. The childrens experience of group work. Time available. What will you do in the lesson The organisation you will choose will depend on - What you want the children to learn. What experience the class already have of group work. The time, equipment and materials available Your planning should include - What you need to collect and set out. Introducing the work. What the children will do. Monitoring and assessing their learning. Helping children of different abilities. Concluding the lesson The video was written and produced by Tina Jarvis, Frankie McKeon and Jon Shears from SCIcentre and University of Leicester ITS Multimedia Services. It was made with the kind cooperation of St Marys CE Primary School, Bitteswell, Leicester. Special thanks go to Linda Cork and Penny Vernon.

Learn Computer Code - Primary School Education

03:18
This short video outlines key skills that primary school teachers can develop into curriculum to help their students learn computer programming. The main point being that it is logic and thinking that make the biggest difference in programming, and that for this type of brain training you don't even need a computer. Practice and understanding of algorithms is the most important training for computer programming, and at primary school this can be done by creating algorithms for every day events, such as making a cake, or washing the dog. Teachers TV: Classroom Layout and Resources

05:26
Find out how a primary school has tailored classroom layouts, resources and lesson activities to help pupils with dyslexia with their learning. Dr Kate Saunders of the British Dyslexia Association explains the strengths of dyslexic learners. To help pupils learn, activities should be physically active and have plenty of colour 3D objects to learn best. In a maths lesson at Southfield Junior School, the teacher lays out hoops across the floor to reinforce learning on multiplication and division. Dr Saunders explains how even the location of a lesson round the class can help pupils remember better. The teacher shows how colourful displays can be useful for pupils with dyslexia to have a reference, and explains how pupils can be confused by black letters on a white board. By simply dimming the board, this visual stress can be mitigated and pupils have a better chance of learning. All of these methods also give pupils a greater sense of self worth. This video is one of a series produced by TESS-India to support teachers in developing learner-centred classroom practices. Resource Review is the place to update your knowledge about teaching resources. In this edition we're looking at three resources to help with teaching fractions at primary level. Expert Chris Pearson, headteacher at Goldstone Primary School in Hove, East Sussex, recommends: - Run Around Fractions - Magnetic 3D Fraction Shapes - fractions section of www.coxhoe.durham.sch.uk. Our roving reporter, Matthew Tosh, is out and about to see a couple of the resources in action. Chris and presenter Hermione Cockburn are joined in the studio by panellists Keith Fox, headteacher at St John's Walworth Primary School in the London Borough of Southwark, and Dave Smith, ICT Consultant and Curriculum Advisor for the Havering Inspection and Advisory Service. A teacher prepares questions and pictures before a storytelling session to help all his young students understand the story. This video is one of a series produced by TESS-India to support teachers in developing learner-centred classroom practices. Filmed in primary and secondary schools in India, the aim of the videos is to inspire teachers to experiment with using similar approaches in their own classrooms. The videos are intended to complement the text-based TESS-India materials for teachers and school leaders. However, they may also be viewed independently of these materials. TESS-India (Teacher Education through School-based Support in India) is an Open University, UK led teacher education project that has collaboratively developed a large repository of freely available, adaptable Open Educational Resources (OER) that support national education priorities in India. The resources are accessible in a range of media and languages, for use in multiple initial and continuing teacher development contexts. TESS-India is funded by UK aid from the UK government. You can learn more about the project and view our materials at http://www.tess-india.edu.in/ You can also receive regular updates by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. Giselle Pulford and her Year 6/7 students at Nairne Primary School in South Australia, talk about growing a successful classroom library. It is an essential element in giving all students ready access to 'Just Right' reading and immersing them in a culture of reading. It is a foundational step in developing a Reading Workshop approach in classrooms.
