√ Strategic Role of Operations Management | Business Studies
#iitutor #BusinessStudies #OperationProcess https://www.iitutor.com Strategic means affecting all business functions. The strategic role of operations management is to contribute to the direction and plan of the business. The main goal of business is to minimise costs to maximise profits. A strategic role of operations is the management of costs. The different operations costs for a business are: Input costs, Labour costs, Processing costs, Inventory costs, Quality management. • Cost leadership aims to have the lowest costs and be the most prices competitive in the market. The business must still be profitable. Operations Management therefore must find ways to reduce costs in production. Example: Bunnings. A business can cut costs by increasing the scale/size of the business. How? By buying in bulk, the business is able to negotiate lower costs per unit. Goods/service differentiation: Tangible – they can be seen and touched. Tend to be standardised. Can be owned and transferred between people. Can take considerable time between production and consumption. Easy to determine costs by calculating inputs and adding margin. Services: Intangible. Generally customised. Cannot be owned. Production and consumption occurs at the same time. The value of a service depends on what the consumer is prepared to pay. Product Differentiation. Operations must find a way to distinguish their products from their competitors. This gives them a competitive advantage. This will differ between goods and services. Product Differentiation: Goods. Varying the actual product features. Operations search for ways to make their product features attractive to the consumer. Varying product quality. Making a low quality alternative to attract a different group of consumers. Varying the augmented features. This refers to add-ons or additional benefits. Product Differentiation: Services. Varying the amount of time spent on a service. Example: Hair salons. Varying the level of expertise brought to a service. Some service providers will offer a higher level of expertise. Varying the qualifications and experience of the service provider. This can be an important factor when consumers are choosing their service provider. Varying the quality of materials/ technology used in service delivery. Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Medical technologies. Cross Branding: Operations may choose to offer consumers added benefits from a cross-branding arrangement.

Design of the platform business | Paul von Gruben | TEDxTUBerlin
Over the last couple of years there has been a dramatic change in business models. Many of the fastest growing and highly valued companies are platform-based firms like ber, Amazon or Google. The major change happened in the way the companies create value for their customers. Do you think a platform company creates just as much value as a traditional manufacturer? Paul is currently finishing his PhD thesis on open interfaces and platform strategies at the Technical University of Berlin. He was invited to speak at multiple international conferences and was asked to join the research group of a highly recognized MIT professor in early 2017. During his time in Boston as a visiting research fellow at the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he worked with experts on the topics of technology evolution and platform design. Prior to that, Paul has worked for a startup company and a digitalization consulting firm in Berlin. What would you like to see in the future? Amazon, Google, Facebook, Uber, and AirBnB are some of the most successful companies of the 21st century and are examples of different types of platform businesses. However they exist only thanks to one shared, open platform: the internet. More firms should take advantage of the possibilities which the internet provides and should make use of platform desig This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Small Land Deer Management and Hunting Strategies - The Management Advantage #65
The majority of hunters and land managers deal with small parcels of land. Successfully managing and hunting these tracts of land can be challenging, but it is far from impossible. The key is providing everything a whitetail needs so it doesn't have a reason to leave. This can be done through a variety of different measures, but a vital key is not only managing the land, but also the amount of hunting pressure you put on the deer on your property. This week, we answer viewer submitted questions regarding small land management and hunting strategies. We had some great questions regarding food sources, bedding areas, and the best locations to hunt. The main points to keep in mind in all of these is surveying your piece of property and deciding what it is missing. Once you've identified it, take measures to improve it. On a piece of property less than 100 acres, pressure plays a huge role. Providing sanctuaries for deer that you rarely if ever enter, is just as important as bedding cover and food plots. Careful planning goes into every aspect of small land management and every property is different. Strategically making management decisions for your piece of property to make it better than the surroundings land and you can bet you'll have a large number of whitetails calling your land home. The Management Advantage has always been driven by the viewers and this episode is a prime example of why we do what we do. Thank you to everyone who submitted their questions and we look forward to answering more of them in coming episodes. Urban Strategies & Planning (USP)
The Urban Strategies & Planning specialization is part of the IHS Master programme in Urban Management and Development. Urban Planning has moved away from comprehensive master plans that intended to control the spatial development of an entire territory, to more flexible strategic plans. At the same time, urban professionals face challenges such as the fast growing urban world population and cities with informal housing, social deprivation, economic decline and changing climatic circumstances. Contemporary strategic planning integrates more social and economic considerations into the physical and spatial dimensions of planning.

Techno Innovation: IT growth strategies: service, productivity, cost control, security
http://www.globalchange.com Key themes: growth strategies impact on IT departments. Need for IT innovation in systems, processes, outsourcing, infrastructure risk management, customer support and security. Rapidly changing nature of global business, external operating environments, manufacturing, wholesale, retailing, logistics, supply chain management, velocity of change in consumer and competitor behaviour, shifts in patterns of work, virtual teams, virtual working, collaboration tools and partnership - relevant to key industries such as financial services and health.

We think about convergence of technologies, and of businesses such as information and entertainment companies. But convergence also demands multi-skilled, multidisciplinary teams. People with unusual combinations of experiences and training. CIO and COO industry strategy. Globalisation of every large business, mergers, acquisitions -- all these create new leadership pressures when it comes to sharing information. New blends of products and services. Blurring of differences between different kinds of corporations.

Beyond increasingly mobile connections between people, to connections between apparently unrelated ideas and facts. Semantic web. Example: fraud detection in banking using complex data analysis to identify patterns of unusual activity, including unusual interactions between people. Example: detection of viral mutations and new patterns of disease. Example: predicting behaviour of customers through multivariate analysis. All these things require a much more sophisticated approach to data. A recent UK survey showed that in the largest corporations:

•85% allow wireless access
•90% allow remote access
•75% use software as a service / cloud
•44% entrust critical services to 3rd party

A digital world which is independent of any particular technology, device, platform, operating system. Everything everywhere, all the time. Corporations need to catch up with how their own teams are behaving in their private lives - storing all their e-mail, photos, videos, documents on remote servers owned by organisations like Facebook or Google. 25% of large corporations plan partial migration into the cloud in the next 2 years, 11% in 12 months. This is already a $56bn / year, and will be $150bn by 2013, according to Gartner. As part of the same trends we can expect to see rapid growth in software as a service -- hosted on other company's servers.

Beyond virtual teams, virtual working and virtual organisations. Innovation in the past has tended to be limited to the capacity of teams inside organisations - even if they are spread across many time zones and sites. Expect rapid growth of crowd-sourcing or open innovation, with the same mindset as Wikipedia or Twitter: harnessing the intellectual power of communities to solve complex problems fast in profitable ways. Cost of innovation is shifting from cost of creating the ideas to the legal costs of protecting them, in a relatively open environment. We have seen widespread use of open innovation in computing, innovation in green technology, and also in health -- for example matching disease to genetic code.

Convergence, connections, clouds and crowds - each of these is creating new risks which are increasing dramatically. Corporations can only embrace these four Cs above by also building much more sophisticated controls. Such security needs to be dynamic: responding in the right way according to actual risk, without slowing down and frustrating our management and innovation teams. But we can also use Convergence, Connections, Clouds and Crowds to help find and develop the innovations we need in Controls.Summary of Keynote conference presentation for Ricoh by Patrick Dixon, Futurist speaker and author of Futurewise. Other topics: virtual teams, virtual working, hacking, data loss, fraud detection, enterprise growth, IT strategy and system stability, IT risk management, server reliability, denial of service attacks, viral attacks, industrial espionage, detection of criminal activity in banks. Risk management -- reducing down-time and increasing system recovery speed.

Project Management Simplified: Learn The Fundamentals of PMI's Framework ✓
✅http://lig.academy - Need a better job? Most LIG members find their ideal employment within as little as 15 days. Welcome to this week's episode where I make project management simple for you. To make it applicable to the majority of the audience, I am teaching Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management framework. ________________________________________________ Textbooks and frameworks are always boring. So, to make project management more interesting for you, I ran a project to demonstrate what steps to take and when. You won't regret spending 50 minutes to learn the basics of a wonderful practice called project management. You can also download all the templates I used in the session here (no need to register); https://thecareermastery.com/career-tips/project-management-simplified/ Although I strongly recommend you watch the entire session without skipping, for those of you who are just looking for snippets of information, you may find below the index of the video; 03:03 What is a project, program, and portfolio and how are they different from operations? 04:08 Project = Project Life Cycle + Project Management Process 04:43 Project Life Cycle 06:52 Process Groups 09:27 LIG, PMP certification or CAPM certification, which one is right for you? It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. This video covers; project management project management institute pmp project management professional certification project life cycle project management PMI managing a project project management fundamentals fundamentals of project management project management for beginners project management course

The Difference Between Operations and Strategy
Operations and strategy are like two separate, but related, engines on a boat. Both engines propel the boat forward. Evaluation of rule-based control strategies according to process state diagnosis in A2/o process. H.S. Kim, Y.J. Kim, S.J. Choi, M.S. Kim, W.H. Piao, C.W. Kim, Republic of Korea Professor Changwon Kim, from Pusan National University in Korea, has given his 25 years effort to develop wastewater treatment process modeling and control. Also last September, he hosted IWA World Water Congress 2012 Busan as a congress president. Nowadays his interest is about the future city which is strong for various water-related threatening. Therefore his research is about the intelligent decision support system for city water management. Today he will give presentation about successful trials for making decision supporting tools generated from his research team. In this conference we will discuss the new developments in IT & Water. These developments are very important for the further evolution of the water sector. IT applications in the water sector cover a broad field of interest. On one hand, IT applications have the ability to integrate the water sector from a high strategic level with connections to security and energy services. on the other hand IT applications have the ability to improve the performance of a single process, or part of a process, by improving the design or control with detailed models. IT applications should lead to better water quality, lower environmental impact and more efficient management, control, monitoring and maintenance of water systems, infrastructure and water treatment processes. Due to fast communication and new ways of personal interaction with stakeholders and customers, IT applications will not only support the water sector in carrying out its primary tasks but also in its communication with customers and stakeholders.

Implementing Strategies - Management & Cost Accounting - Spring 2013 - Professor Noel Cooperberg
Lecture 2: Implementing Strategies (Value Chain Analysis, Balanced Scorecard, Strategy Map) Professor Noel Cooperberg (Chapter 2) Learning Objectives: 0:33 Industry Analysis - Economic Attributes: 1:15 (Includes Supply & Demand, Manufacturing Marketing, Investing, Financing) Porter's Five Forces Model (flow-chart): 7:21 Implementing a Company Strategy: 10:51 Company Analysis - Economic Attributes: 11:12 Company Analysis - Critical Success Factors: 12:49 Question: 15:33 Questions Reviewed: 22:21 SWOT Analysis: 28:04 (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) Execution (putting CSF's to use): 30:21 Value Chain Analysis: 31:01 Example of Value Chain Analysis: 34:48 Result of Value Chain Analysis: 37:05 Five Steps of Strategic Decision Making (applied): 39:58 Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and Metrics: 41:07 Strategy Map (with diagram): 45:06 Sustainability (including an example): 47:12 Sustainability Scorecard: 50:12 BSC and Not-For-Profit Organizations: 51:36 Industry analysis involves understanding key economic attributes. Demand involves price sensitivity, potential industry growth, and cyclicality. Supply involves the strength of your supply chain and distribution channels. Manufacturing involves capital intensiveness and processing complexity. Marketing involves brand recognition and susceptibility to advertising. Investing / financing involves financing requirements, profitability, growth rates, cash flow implications, and global implications. Critical success factors (CSF's) are those processes within the firm that deliver value to customers. Skills that a company employs particularly well are its core competencies. The combination becomes the basis for developing a successful strategy. The CSFs tied to strategy include product innovation, qu ality, and skill development. Quantitative measures for specified CSFs include number of design changes / new patents, number of defects / number of returns, and number of training hours or amount of skill performance improvement. A SWOT analysis involves understanding the company's strengths [internal], weaknesses [internal], opportunities [external], and threats [external]. CSFs depend on the strategy the firm operates with (cost leaders vs differentiating). Management accountants gather, analyze, and report on relevant information on CSFs. To better understand the details of the organization's competitive strategy, analyze the processes of the company that add value (processes that do not add value can be deleted or outsourced). CSFs must be implemented throughout operations. To better understand the competitive advantage of the company, include upstream (prior to manufacturing or operations) and downstream activities. Having a balanced scorecard provides many benefits. It is a means for measuring the implementation of a strategy (by cross referencing what is occurring with the predetermined criteria). It provides a tool to achieve organizational change. It can be used to determine management's compensation and rewards (and aligns managers' efforts with strategy). A properly constructed BSC can be used to infer a company's strategy. The emphasis placed on each performance perspective reflects the strategy of the firm. For a cost leader, the operations perspective might be most important; for a differentiator, the customer perspective is more important. A strategy map is a cause-and-effect diagram of the relationships embodied in a BSC. It shows how the achievemnt of CSSFs in one perspective should affect goals in another. The success in the financial perpsective is the ultimate goal. Success in the other perspectives should lead to improved financial performance and shareholder value. Environmental reports use environmental performance indicators (EPIs) to measure sustainability, with the focus on three areas: (1) operation [which measures stresses to the environment / regulatory compliance issues) (2) management [trying to reduce environmental affects], and (3) environmental condition [measure environmental quality]. Competitive strategy is different - it must satisfy funding authorities, political leaders, and the general public. The BSC can still be used to monitor CSFs related to internal processes, customer satisfaction, financial measures, and human resources measures. Value-chain analysis can still be used to determine at what points costs can be reduced or value added. Understanding Model Predictive Control, Part 2: What is MPC?
Learn how model predictive control (MPC) works. - Model Predictive Control Toolbox: http://bit.ly/2xgwWvN - What Is Model Predictive Control Toolbox?: http://bit.ly/2xfEe2M - Getting Started with Model Predictive Control Toolbox: http://bit.ly/2GskEY4 MPC uses a model of the plant to make predictions about future plant outputs. It solves an optimization problem at each time step in order to find the control action that drives the predicted plant output as close to the desired reference as possible. - Optimization Problem: http://bit.ly/2Gx0OuI - How to Design an MPC Controller with Simulink and Model Predictive Control Toolbox: http://bit.ly/2Gvv0qe - Adaptive MPC Design with Simulink and Model Predictive Control Toolbox: http://bit.ly/2GsL5Nu Using a simple car example, this video provides insight into an MPC controller’s strategy for finding the optimal steering wheel angle to control the car’s longitudinal speed. At each time step, the MPC controller makes predictions about the future lateral positions of the car. To drive the predicted path of the car as close to the reference as possible, the MPC controller formulates the control problem as an optimization problem. It tries to minimize the errors between the lateral positions of the car and the reference as well as steering wheel angle increments. The cost function is represented as a weighted squared sum of these two terms. The solution to this optimization problem provides the optimal steering wheel angle sequence. At the current time step, MPC only applies the first step of this optimal sequence to the car and disregards the rest. In the next time step, it gets a new measurement of the car’s lateral position. The prediction horizon shifts by one time step, and the controller repeats the same cycle to calculate the next optimal steering wheel angle.
