SPAIN: EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK & INTEREST RATES

01:33
Natural Sound The European Central Bank is expected to resist calls for an interest rate hike during Thursday's board meeting in Madrid. Because of ebbing inflation, stable exchange rates and moderate wage contracts, it's expected the bank will feel less pressure to raise rates in the eleven countries which use Europe's common currency, the Euro. But many economists say increases are needed to put the brakes on Europe's brisk economic recovery. The executives who govern the European Central Bank - preparing for round-table discussions in Madrid on Thursday. This is first time the seventeen-member board has held one of its regular one day meetings outside its base in the German city of Frankfurt. Among items on the agenda: interest rates. Ebbing inflation, stable exchange rates and moderate wage contracts mean the bank's under less pressure to hike interest rates in the 11 countries using Europe's common currency, the Euro. As a result, the board is expected to decide to keep rates steady- at least for now. Just two weeks ago the bank boosted its key interest rate a quarter of a point to three-and-a-half percent, which made economists confident the bank will hold off raising its key rate on Thursday. Economists warn, however, another rate rise is still on the horizon. Inflation in the region still stands at two percent which is the upper limit tolerated by the bank under its own rules. The European Central Bank has raised interest rates a full percentage point since November. Economists say another hike will be needed in late spring to temper Europe's brisk economic recovery. Business in the region is growing at three percent with countries such as Ireland and Spain leading the way. The only problem is, rapid growth also fuels inflation: prices have been pushed through the roof in Ireland with inflation of four point six percent and in Spain, where it stands at three percent. In Germany, which is Europe's biggest economy, the recent signing of moderate wage contracts has mitigated fears runaway wages there would spill over into other areas of the economy and push up consumer prices. The E-C-B board is expected to announce its decision at 1230 G-M-T Meanwhile, after hitting a new low of 93 point 90 cents in late February, the Euro has stabilised against the dollar in the 96-cent range. EXCHANGING & WITHDRAWING CASH WHEN TRAVELLING | BASICS OF BACKPACKING #5

04:32
Let's talk money in today's episode! In particular exchanging currencies and withdrawing cash abroad without the massive fees! It is a good idea to exchange a small amount of cash before you leave so you have some funds for taxi’s or a cheeky coffee at the airport. But don’t take too much cash, only enough to cover your first couple of days. Don’t carry anymore than you are willing to lose! Using ATM machines abroad can vary. Some countries will have next to zero ATM machines which will accept foreign cards, like Japan, which is why it’s good to have cash on you till you find somewhere to withdraw. Taking a travel card is a good idea which is where you pre-load money onto the card and spend it in different locations across the world. Some Travel Cards may freeze the exchange rate or have it flexible so you get the best exchange rate when you spend! Using your home bank card is a popular option but can incur some hefty fee’s. Here are some tips: If you need to withdraw cash then don’t take out $50 at a time. Cover yourself for a few days and try not to use EFTPOS machines! --------------------- Important stuff --------------------- Support me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/psychotraveller DON'T FORGET TO BECOME A LITTLE PSYCHO: http://goo.gl/GnWOIt --------------------- Social media is sexy --------------------- Facebook: http://goo.gl/K0u8pa Twitter: http://goo.gl/FsbWJR Pinterest: http://goo.gl/qgRD4v Instagram: http://goo.gl/abzups SnapChat: @PsychoTraveller My blog: http://goo.gl/5zP0dG Business email: psychotraveller22 at gmail dot com --------------------- What I Film My Videos With --------------------- GoPro Hero 4 Silver: http://goo.gl/9AE4Yu Sony A5100: http://goo.gl/Fo1DDY --------------------- Some Sexy Stuff Right Here!! --------------------- Get $30 off your first stay on Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com.au/c/aford34?s=8 Get $10 off GoPro accessories with the code “PsychoTraveller” here: http://www.sandmarc.com/ (Above are affiliate codes/links which mean if you sign up/buy a product, at no extra cost to you, I make a little bit of money to help me maintain my channel and blog!)

Various - Weakening Currencies

T/I: 10:56:56 STORY: CURRENCIES LOCATION: TOKYO/FRANKFURT/LISBON/MADRID DATE: 6 MARCH 1995 DURATION: 1.35 Dollar falls to record yen low, Spain/Portugal devalue The US dollar continued its steep decline on the Japanese and European markets on Monday (6/3). It reached an historic low of 92.70 yen in Tokyo before recovering slightly in later trading. This was despite intervention last week by the US Federal Reserve and European central banks. In European markets it dropped against the Mark, which is strengthening against almost all currencies in the European Monetary System. Analysts believe investors are moving their money out of dollars and into the solid Mark. But the strengthening German currency has put severe pressure on the entire European Union's Exchange Rate Mechanism, forcing a devaluation of Portugal's escudo and Spain's peseta, after an emergency meeting of the EU's Monetary Committee. SPAIN: MADRID: PESETA IS DEVALUED

02:45
English/Nat Financial markets in Madrid were in turmoil today (Monday) as dealers tried to cope with the devaluation of the Spanish peseta. The peseta was devalued 7 per cent and the Portuguese escudo by 3.5 per cent early Monday following an 11-hour emergency meeting of the EU's Monetary Committee called at Madrid's request. Today's devaluation of the peseta came after two weeks of pounding on currency markets, threatening to send it to the floor of the value allowed within the European Union's Exchange Rate Mechanism (E-R-M). Early Monday, the peseta was devalued by 7 per cent and the escudo by 3.5 per cent in a realignment within the E-R-M. In Madrid this morning, dealers were hoping the peseta would stabilise shortly. SOUNDBITE: "Well apparently it's going to be very important to see what happens in the first two or three days of this week. Right now I should say that we are in a perfect "take-in" period and that probably the peseta should recover a little bit during the first days of this week, but I must tell you that after that I assume that the pressure against the peseta will keep on as the main factors against the peseta have not really disappeared at all". SUPER CAPTION: Borja Murube - Chief Dealer, Natwest (Madrid) Ten of the 15 EU states make up the European Monetary System, which links exchange rates of EU currencies in preparation for achieving a single EU currency by the end of the decade. This is the fourth time the peseta has been devalued since 1992. It's a further blow for the Socialist government of Felipe Gonzalez, a staunch defender of monetary union in the EU. Today's devaluation highlighted Spain's trouble in meeting the EU targets necessary for a single currency. Financiers are also blaming the political turmoil in Spain for the peseta's poor performance and fear the crisis among the European currencies could continue, with further pressure on the peseta. SOUNDBITE: "Well right now I should say that most of the reasons about the peseta weakness are political factors, I cannot begin to say that sounds good at all but you know, these are more or less the same as in other European countries so I should say that the only solution for the peseta at the moment should be if we see a real political change in Spain". SUPER CAPTION: Borja Murube - Chief Dealer, Natwest (Madrid) The devaluations showed the difficulties of the 15-nation EU to keep currencies closely tied for an eventual single currency, and highlighted the gap between stronger and weaker EU economies. Dealers says the devaluations illustrate the risk that Spain and Portugal could lag behind in moves toward the single currency. After two weeks of turmoil for the Iberian currencies, European Union monetary officials are hoping Monday's devaluation of the Spanish peseta and Portuguese escudo would be enough to stave off a full-blown crisis of the EU's monetary system. World's Most Confusing Currency? (IRANIAN RIAL)

02:26
One of my favorite things to do whenever I enter a new country (like Iran) is analyzed their currency situation, exchange rate and how these things affect their economy. I’ve handled many inflated currencies -- such as the Indonesian RUPIAH and Vietnamese DONG — but here in Iran, the RIAL gets a lot more confusing than inflation. Iran has 2 different systems to count their money. The first is RIALS (the official Iranian currency), and the second is TUMAN (which is like the Rial, without the last zero). As a traveler, you don’t know which price is listed unless you ask. $1 USD = 50,000 Rials and that same $1 dollar = 5,000 Tuman. Sound confusing? ... It is! Moreover, the only way to get money in Iran as a tourist is by bringing lots of cash (USD or Euros is preferred) and then exchanging it for Iranian Rials when you arrive. The reason is because there are no ATMs in Iran that cater to foreign banks. If you are as confused reading this as I am typing it out, then this video will explain the confusing world of the Iranian Rial a little better. Just curious, did you know anything about this before I made this video? Please share your thoughts on this below! And special thanks to G Adventures for hosting me on this life changing trip! Spain Gold 25 Pesetas Coin (Alfonso XII)

00:42
Spanish Gold Coin: Spanish 25 Pesetas Gold Coin from the Kingdom of Spain Weight: 8.0645g Purity: .900 Gold Content: .2333 troy oz Diameter: 23.5mm Thickness: 1.4mm Obverse: a bust of King Alfonso XII and the "mint year". The wording translates to "Alfonso XII, By the Grace of God" Reverse: Coat of arms surrounded by "REY CONST. DE ESPAÑA" (Constitutional King of Spain) and its denomination. In preparation to join the Latin Monetary Union (LMU) Spain adopted its new currency unit peseta and converted its coinage to meet the LMU standard. However, Spain never actually joined the LMU officially. The 25 Pesetas pieces were first minted in 1876 and it was not until 1889 the more standardized 20 Pesetas pieces replaced them. I'd speculate that the 25 Pesetas denomination was chosen because it'd contain the closest amount of gold to the previous 10 Escudos pieces. The exchange rate was set to 2.5 Pesetas for each Escudo. Alfonso XII died when he was just 27 from an illness. Almost 8 million of these were minted from 1881 to 1885. More than 4 million of which were all minted in 1881. The mint years are inscribed within the 2 stars to the left and right of the mint year. Unlike some of the earlier version of the Alfonso XII piece, this version has not been restruck. Today, these coins are somewhat uncommon and there is a sizable premium above its gold content especially the ones with better dates.

Spain's unemployment rate jumps to 27 percent

The number of unemployed climbed by 237,400 people to 6.2 million, the National Statistics Institute said on Thursday. Spain, once the motor of job creation in the 17-nation single currency area, is in a double dip recession, having yet to recover from the collapse of a property boom in 2008. SOUNDBITE (English) Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank "Let me say just one more thing about the comments about the exchange rate which are now frequently made by lots of people. I think that when they are made by people who are not immediately related to monetary policy, some of these commentaries are inappropriate or they are fruitless." 9. Mid of journalist asking question 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank "They are inappropriate if these comments are meant to instruct the ECB to achieve a certain exchange rate. This would mean violating the independence of the ECB and forgetting that the ECB's mandate is not to set the level of the European exchange rate, but to set price stability in the medium term." 11. Mid of journalist asking question (UPSOUND) 12. Wide of press conference ending STORYLINE: European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi criticised politicians at a news briefing on Tuesday, telling them it was "inappropriate" and "fruitless" for them to push the ECB to influence the euro's exchange rate. Draghi told journalists in Madrid that there had been "comments about the exchange rate from a lot of people" and that they were "inappropriate" if they were "meant to instruct the ECB to achieve a certain exchange rate." Several European leaders have highlighted the increase in the value of the euro as a potential problem, with French President Francois Hollande going as far to say the Eurozone should target an exchange rate for its currency. The ECB is forbidden by treaty from taking instructions from politicians. Draghi said the bank doesn't target a particular exchange rate but was monitoring the stronger euro's effects on the economy. The Group of Seven leading industrial nations, which includes the US, Japan and Germany, warned on Tuesday that volatile movements in exchange rates could adversely hit the global economy. There have been increasing concerns around the world that countries might manipulate their exchange rates through their domestic economic policies in order to gain an edge. A lower foreign exchange rate can make a country's exports cheaper, thereby boosting growth. But one currency can fall only if another rises - which in turn will create trade problems for other countries. This process could spark a 'currency war' - a destabilising battle where countries compete against one another to get the lowest exchange rate. In a statement published on Tuesday on the Bank of England website, the G-7 finance ministers and central bankers insisted they remained committed to exchange rates driven by the market - not government or central bank policies - and would consult closely when it comes to sharp movements in foreign currency markets. The statement comes ahead of a meeting in Moscow at the weekend of finance ministers from the world's top 20 industrial and developing countries. In light of the recent swings in the foreign exchange markets, notably relating to the Japanese yen, currency issues were expected to feature heavily during the Group of 20 discussions in the Russian capital. Much of the recent volatility in foreign exchange markets has been a by-product of developments affecting the Japanese yen, which dropped Tuesday to its lowest level against the dollar since May 2010. Money flies out of Spain

00:26
http://www.euronews.com/ Spaniards alarmed by the dire state of their banks are sending money abroad at the fastest rate since records began in 1990. The Bank of Spain says 66.2 billion euros left the country in March. By contrast, in the same month last year 5.4 billion euros came into the country. Spaniards - worried about the health of their banks, hit by their exposure to a 2008 property crash - have been sending money to deposit accounts in stronger economies of northern Europe. Spain's Economy Minister Luis de Guindos however said that reflects the banking sector's problems in finding external funding rather than deposits flying overseas. De Guindos also said that the future of the euro would be at stake in the next few weeks in Spain and Italy, adding that the rumours that Spain was negotiating financial assistance with the International Monetary Fund were "complete nonsense." "The battle of the euro is being fought right now in Spain and Italy," he said at an event in Sitges, in the north-eastern region of Catalonia. He also said Germany should help correct imbalances in the euro zone created by a loose monetary policy over the last decade and by the non-respect by Berlin of the stability and growth pact in 2003. "We need to correct decisions which favoured Germany... Germany has to assume its part," he said, adding that decisions in this respect would be taken in the next few days. Best way to build your coin collection is through online eBay auctions such as this: https://goo.gl/XC8mKr The euro (sign: €; code: EUR) is the official currency of the eurozone, which consists of 19 of the 28 member states of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.[3][4] The currency is also officially used by the institutions of the European Union and four other European countries, as well as unilaterally by two others, and is consequently used daily by some 337 million Europeans as of 2015.[5] Outside of Europe, a number of overseas territories of EU members also use the euro as their currency. Additionally, 210 million people worldwide as of 2013 use currencies pegged to the euro. The euro is the second largest reserve currency as well as the second most traded currency in the world after the United States dollar.[6][7][8] As of August 2014, with more than €995,000,000,000 in circulation, the euro has the highest combined value of banknotes and coins in circulation in the world, having surpassed the U.S. dollar.[note 17] Based on International Monetary Fund estimates of 2008 GDP and purchasing power parity among the various currencies, the eurozone is the second largest economy in the world.[9] The name euro was officially adopted on 16 December 1995.[10] The euro was introduced to world financial markets as an accounting currency on 1 January 1999, replacing the former European Currency Unit (ECU) at a ratio of 1:1 (US$1.1743). Physical euro coins and banknotes entered into circulation on 1 January 2002, making it the day-to-day operating currency of its original members.[11] While the euro dropped subsequently to US$0.8252 within two years (26 October 2000), it has traded above the U.S. dollar since the end of 2002, peaking at US$1.6038 on 18 July 2008.[12] Since late 2009, the euro has been immersed in the European sovereign-debt crisis which has led to the creation of the European Financial Stability Facility as well as other reforms aimed at stabilising the currency. In July 2012, the euro fell below US$1.21 for the first time in two years, following concerns raised over Greek debt and Spain's troubled banking sector.[13] As of December 2015, the euro–dollar exchange rate stands at ~ US$1.09.[

Is there an exodus from Spain in 2016?

07:54
It appears that over 126,000 have left Spain compared on numbers to last year. But I do question is this more to do with economics than Spain being in decline. The reason being is the UK for example during the slump of Spain people went to the UK to work in the NHS. As such its no doubt got back home to Spain that pay is much better than here. Has that driven more people to go to seek out a fortune in the UK and elsewhere? You also have a lot of UK expats returning home and I am not sure why as I have yet to come across anyone who has gone home. Most of the people I know are here for the long haul and will no doubt stay here. The economy simply couldn’t get any worse although it may be the exchange rate jitters with the UK vote on the EU making people worry. But for someone who makes money online and can travel to the UK on contracts Spain is still a better alternative. The rents are around 1/3rd of what I would pay in the UK with the added bonus of being next to the local beach. There are so many reasons to stay in Spain but the only things I could see people leaving for is economic or health. There is a lot of expats in Spain that have never signed up on the government systems as such many of these may be the numbers people are seeing leave. As I can see Spain clamping down on abuse of the healthcare system here, as well as the fact the EHIC cards from the UK have also been exploited.

How Pinoys in Europe are affected by weakening euro

SPAIN - Filipinos in Europe are already complaining of the continuous depreciation of euro. They can’t help but compare the euro-peso exchange rate 10 years ago, when a euro was pegged at P70. But in March, the euro plummeted to almost P46, making it almost equivalent to one US dollar. Some Filipinos have to send more euros so their families in the Philippines can receive the same amount they have been receiving every month.
