All the quantities required for 1000ml of suspension are halved to get a 500ml of suspension. Procedure 10 ml of sample from soil suspension from sampling depth 〖(𝐻〗_𝑒) 10 cm. At various time interval after the commencement of sedimentation. The pipette should be inserted in the boiling tube about 25 sec before the selected time interval and time taken for sucking the sample should not be more than 10 to 20 sec. Each sample is transferred into suitable sampling bottles and dried in an oven. The mass w_d of solid per ml of suspension is thus found by taking the dry mass and by dividing it by 10. Standard Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates (ASTM C136)

Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates Today we’re going to demonstrate the dry sieving test method used to determine the particle size distribution of fine and coarse aggregates in accordance with ASTM C136, where a sample of dry aggregate of known mass is separated through a series of sieves with progressively smaller openings to determine the particle size distribution of the test sample. The Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates is used primarily to (1) determine the grading of materials proposed for use as aggregates or being used as aggregates, and to (2) determine the compliance of the particle size distribution where applicable specifications are required, and to (3) provide necessary data for quality control of the production of various aggregate products and mixtures containing aggregates. Devices required for this test method are: a balance or scale used in testing of fine and coarse aggregate with a readability of 0.1 g for fine aggregate, and 0.5 g for coarse aggregate, or mixtures of fine and coarse aggregate; Test sieves that conform to ASTM E11 specifications; A mechanical sieving device to create motion of the particles to bounce, tumble, or otherwise turn so as to present different orientations to the sieving surface; An oven of appropriate size capable of maintaining a uniform temperature of 110 +/- 5 °C (230 +/- 9 °F); A sieve brush; a sample container or pan; a sieve pan; a sieve stack cover; and a way to record and analysis your test finding. Sieving Procedure The procedure for Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates, we first dry the test sample in an oven at a constant temperature of 110 +/- 5 °C (230 +/- 9 °F). For this demonstration we’re using a Gilson BO-350 Quincy Bench Oven. Now, measure on a balance or scale the tare weight or unladen weight of your sample container or pan. Now place the test sample into the sample container and measure its gross weight. Next, select test sieves with suitable openings to furnish enough information required by the specifications covering the material being tested. Nest the sieves in order of decreasing size of opening from top to bottom. Today we’re using Gilson 8in ASTM E11 stainless steel compliance grade test sieves. Place the sieve stack on to a sieve pan. Now place the test sample into the top sieve and then cap the sieve stack with a sieve cover. Agitate the sieves by means of a mechanical sieving apparatus for a sufficient period of time so that not-more-than 1% by mass of the material retained on any individual sieve will pass that sieve during 1 minute of continuous sieving. For this demonstration we are using the Gilson SS-15 mechanical Sieve Shaker. The SS-15 delivers superior accuracy and repeatability for particle separations for No. 4 to No. 200 size ranges by combining a back and forth lateral motion with an up and down tilting motion which causes test material to travel in an orbit on sieve surfaces. Once sieving has completed its course, measure and record the mass weight of each sample size increment on a scale or balance to the nearest 0.1 gram. Repeat this process for each sieve and the sieve pan. The total mass of the sieved sample should match closely with original mass of test sample before sieving. If the amounts differ by more than 0.3%, based on the original dry sample mass, the results should not be used, and the test should be repeated. Soil particle size distribution is a key determinant of many soil functions including soil fertility, and hydraulic and mechanical behavior. Soil particle size analysis using traditional hydrometer or pipette sedimentation methods is tedious and error-prone. Laser diffraction particle size analysis is a rapid low cost technology for measuring particle sizes using light diffraction patterns. Particle size distribution can be measured in narrow size classes in dry soils, or in water using different dispersion treatments.
