SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Self-regulation theory (SRT) is a system of conscious personal management that involves the process of guiding one's own thoughts, behaviors, and feelings to reach goals. Self-regulation consists of several stages, and individuals must function as contributors to their own motivation, behavior, and development within a network of reciprocally interacting influences. Roy Baumeister, one of the leading social psychologists who have studied self-regulation, claims it has four components: standards of desirable behavior, motivation to meet standards, monitoring of situations and thoughts that precede breaking said standards, and lastly, willpower. Baumeister along with other colleagues developed three models of self-regulation designed to explain its cognitive accessibility: self-regulation as a knowledge structure, strength, or skill. Studies have been done to determine that the strength model is generally supported, because it is a limited resource in the brain and only a given amount of self-regulation can occur until that resource is depleted. SRT can be applied to: 1. impulse control, the management of short-term desires. People with low impulse control are prone to acting on immediate desires. This is one route for such people to find their way to jail as many criminal acts occur in the heat of the moment. For non-violent people it can lead to losing friends through careless outbursts, or financial problems caused by making too many impulsive purchases. 2. the cognitive bias known as illusion of control. To the extent that people are driven by internal goals concerned with the exercise of control over their environment, they will seek to reassert control in conditions of chaos, uncertainty or stress. Failing genuine control, one coping strategy will be to fall back on defensive attributions of control—leading to illusions of control (Fenton-O'Creevy et al., 2003). 3. goal attainment and motivation, and 4. sickness behavior. SRT consists of several stages. First, the patient deliberately monitors one's own behavior, and evaluates how this behavior affects one's health. If the desired effect is not realized, the patient changes personal behavior. If the desired effect is realized, the patient reinforces the effect by continuing the behavior. (Kanfer 1970;1971;1980) Another approach is for the patient to realize a personal health issue and understand the factors involved in that issue. The patient must decide upon an action plan for resolving the health issue. The patient will need to deliberately monitor the results in order to appraise the effects, checking for any necessary changes in the action plan. (Leventhal & Nerenz 1984) Another factor that can help the patient reach his/her own goal of personal health is to relate to the patient the following: Help them figure out the personal/community views of the illness, appraise the risks involved, and give them potential problem-solving/coping skills. Four components of self-regulation described by Baumeister et al. (2007) are: Standards: Of desirable behavior. Motivation: To meet standards. Monitoring: Of situations and thoughts that precede breaking standards. Willpower: Internal strength to control urges.

Government Regulation: Crash Course Government and Politics #47

09:49
Today, we’re going to wrap up our discussion of economic policy by looking at government regulation. We're going to talk about the government's goals for the U.S. economy and the policies it employs to achieve those goals. Ever since the New Deal, we've seen an increased role of the government within the economy - even with the deregulation initiatives of President Carter and Reagan in the 80's. Now this is all pretty controversial and we're going to talk about it, as this is a long way from the federal government handed down by the framers of the constitution. Social Policy: Crash Course Government and Politics #49

08:54
Today, Craig is going to talk about social policy - in the United States this means achieving one of three goals: protecting Americans from risk, promoting equal opportunity, or assisting the poor. Many Americans strongly believe in individualism, that is self-reliance, but since the Great Depression and the New Deal the government’s role has increased significantly. We’re going to focus on two social policies that came out of the New Deal - Social Security and what we tend to think of as “welfare” - and talk about why they’re still around now and potentially the future. These and other social policies are not without controversy, as things tend to be when involving our tax dollars, and we’re going to talk about that too. Has the EU abandoned social regulation?

03:09
The Lisbon Treaty states that the EU aims to promote social progress and improve the living and working conditions of the peoples of Europe. In his ‘Agenda for Jobs, Growth, Fairness and Democratic Change’ President Juncker declared himself to be a ‘strong believer in the social market economy’. Yet unemployment is high and political discussions focus on economic governance. EurActiv organised a stakeholder workshop with the support of the European Trade Union Confederation to discuss: Will social investment be at the core of the ‘Juncker’ investment plan? How will the digital transformation of industry impact social policies, in particular employment and economic growth? What is the future direction the EU should take in terms of social rights and social legislation? What does triple A social Europe mean, and what does President Juncker intend to do about it? How are the ‘Uber-like’ business models changing employment?

Last week we introduced deviance as a concept, but today we’re going return to our major paradigms in sociology and how each approaches deviance. We’ll explore how structural functionalism sees deviance fulfilling a function in society; how deviance is constructed, according to symbolic interactionism; and finally, how conflict theory views deviance as tied to power and inequality. HOW BRACES WORK

06:19
Braces are the most effective and comfortable way for correcting a bite. This is the only orthodontic system which allows for the movement of a tooth in any direction, including turning it axially. In this video you'll see how braces work. With the help of special glue, braces are attached to the surface of the teeth. Then orthodontists put on a special metal archwire, which is fixed with rubber bands or a special system. The braces themselves don't correct the position of the teeth. This is done by the archwire. In order for the system to work successfully, the archwire has to be made more elastic. The braces are glued to the teeth in the center of their crowns. Each tooth has its own "personal" brace. The principle of the system is that the archwire, in trying to return to its initial form, very slowly but surely pulls the teeth into the “right” place with the help of the braces stuck to their surface. An orthodontist gradually makes the archwire more rigid to correct the position of the teeth. The replacement of the archwires should be done about once a month on average. In each case, depending on the type of brace system, replacing the archwires may have to be performed more or less frequently. When braces and the arch are not enough to correct the bite, additional elements are also used: various springs of different diameters and purposes, elastic in the form of a chain, and other specific devices. All of these different elements of the braces system aim to give you a perfectly beautiful smile! Her passion for therapy and its potential for change ignited here, inspiring her to make therapy her life’s work. Alongside a growing private practice Mandy always gave time to promote early intervention through lectures on addiction, emotional coping mechanisms and self-esteem as part of the PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) provision within independent schools. In 2008, with a busy private practice and many years of recovery under her belt, Mandy founded CHARTER Harley Street, an outpatient centre treating addiction and trauma using her pioneering model of care. Is Social Media Destroying Democracy?

02:10:33
A Debate on Social Media in the Disinformation Age Democracy, the fundamental idea that an individual can express their personal choices through a vote, hangs in the balance. There’s no denying that social media has become a central force in democratic society today. It allows for people to connect and exchange ideas, creating an increasingly connected humanity. It enables unprecedented sharing of information so that citizens can make more informed decisions. Marginalized people, whose voices have long been omitted from public discourse, have a platform with which they can express themselves. But is social media a tool that informs and unites, or is it responsible for deeper divisions and a more polarized society? Are misinformation, digital propaganda, algorithmic biases, and campaign hacking scandals determining the results of our elections? Do unintended flaws in the platforms and sluggish regulation threaten to undermine our democratic process? Is social media destroying our democracy? If it is, what role can public policy play in regulation, will regulation even work, and can we save our democracy before it’s too late? For the resolution: Colin Bennett has taught in the Department of Political Science at the University of Victoria since 1986. His research has focused on the social implications of new information technologies. He has completed policy reports on privacy and data protection for the Canadian government, the Canadian Standards Association, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the European Commission, the UK Information Commissioner and others. He is currently working on a comparative research project on the use of personal data by political parties and election campaigns. Dave Moscrop is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa, a contributing columnist at the Washington Post, a writer with Maclean’s, a political commentator, and the author of ‘Too Dumb for Democracy? Why We Make Bad Political Decisions and How We Can Make Better Ones’. He spent eight years in Vancouver, where he completed his Ph.D. in political Science at UBC and held a postdoc in the Scholarly Communication Lab at SFU. He lives in Ottawa. Against the resolution: Nasma Ahmed is a technologist and community organizer based in the city we now know as Toronto. Nasma is currently the Director of the Digital Justice Lab, whose mission is to build towards a more just and equitable digital future. Digital Justice Lab is a project on the shared platform by Tides Canada Initiative. She has extensive experience working alongside the public service and the non-profit sector, focusing on technology capacity building. She was the 2017/2018 Open Web Fellow with Mozilla and Ford Foundation, through her fellowship she worked on building organizational digital security and running a youth workshop series called "Digital Future of Privacy". Francesca Fionda is a data journalist with The Discourse, a community-driven journalism organization based in Vancouver. Right now, she’s digging into Indigenous-style souvenirs in Vancouver’s tourism industry and stories about BC’s child-welfare system. Before the Discourse she worked on investigative teams at Global News and the CBC. Three things she loves about democracy are: freedom of opinion, freedom of expression and the free stickers you get on election day. Don’t miss this oxford-style debate hosted in partnership with SFU’s School of Public Policy and the British Columbia Civil Discourse Society.

What can we learn from social entrepreneurship emerging in Newark, New Jersey? Dr. Jeffrey Robinson shares his insights – drawing from his work at Rutgers Business School and his efforts with the New Jersey Social Innovation Institute – about social problem solving, who does it, and how we can encourage more social innovation. TEDxBroadStreet (http://www.tedxbroadstreet.com), an independently organized TED event fueled by the theme "Reach, Rise, and Revive," took place at the Rutgers Business School in Newark, NJ. TEDxBroadStreet is Newark, NJ's first citywide TEDx event developed in collaboration with Newark residents. Twenty talks and three artistic performances give Newark stakeholders the opportunity to stimulate dialogue and created positive grass roots change on a variety of topics critical to the revitalization and sustainability of the city. Social Media: MPs, Public Caution Government to Implement Regulation

03:42
On the 18th of September 2015, the state minister for internal affairs James Baba made the threat during the state funeral for the late general Aronda Nyakairima at kololo ceremonial grounds daring the line government ministries to quickly push the process of formulating a legal frame work to crackdown on social media because the public is abusing it for ill intentions. The ministers’ remarks caused viral reactions mostly against the vice, which most users attested to blindfolding their rights. Legislators have weighed in on the subject deemed as an attack on rights of free speech and expression. The mps blame government for the laxity in communication that has left Ugandans in a vacuum and exploit platforms such as social media to quench the insatiable demand Nonetheless, the mps under their umbrella body Uganda parliamentary forum on media concede, something can be done to counter ill usage of social platforms, To endorse governments plan will be line ministries such as; ministry of ICT, ministry of information, internal affairs, and defense. The move if implemented will mean, the exchange of communication on platforms such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram, among others will be limited by government. The public reacted in strongly worded statements Example of countries that have moved ahead to regulate social media include; North Korea, Equatorial Guinea, Barma, Libya, Eritrea, Belarus, Cuba, Syria, and Uzbekistan among others

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Cam Adair tells a story of our society's collective nightmare: rejection. It's a story we've all lived through before but this one ends with a plot twist. He speaks to the universal experience and paralyzing fear of rejection while exposing his own inner turmoil he trudged through as a teenager. After years of intense bullying starting at age 13 where the fun game was "Who can stuff Cam into a trashcan?" he dropped out of high school. Twice. Next he found himself recoiling from the world, playing video games up to 16 hours a day. But something surprising happened that changed the way he saw his rejection forever. This turning point allowed him to shift gears to become a successful entrepreneur. Now as a public speaker he travels around the country sharing his message about overcoming the heartbreaking pain of rejection and using it as fuel for growth, connection and purpose. Learn more about Cam at http://camerondare.com. Connect with him on twitter, @camerondare. Cam's mission is helping others live life with intention. Feeling trapped in a career he wasn't passionate about at the age of 20, Cam founded Kingpin Social, a company with a mission to empower young men to live life on their own terms by understanding the social side of their lives. Cam believes in the power of creating your own path, contributing to your community and the magic of youth. Monetary and Fiscal Policy: Crash Course Government and Politics #48

09:19
Today, Craig is going to dive into the controversy of monetary and fiscal policy. Monetary and fiscal policy are ways the government, and most notably the Federal Reserve, influences the economy - for better or for worse. So we’re going to start by looking at monetary policy, and specifically how the Federal Reserve uses interests rates as a means of controlling (or at least attempting to control) inflation. We’ll then move onto fiscal policy - that is the government’s use of taxation to raise and spend money. It’s all, well, pretty controversial, but as it seems Americans hate taxes the most, monetary policy is most often used - meaning that the Federal Reserve plays a hugely significant role in steering the U.S. economy. Privacy as Interpersonal Boundary Regulation in the Context of Social Network Services

51:02
Considering privacy as interpersonal boundary regulation highlights the holistic endeavour people undertake to "make the world work". Interpersonal boundary regulation is a core process of social life: It constitutes of the efforts needed for people to achieve contextually desirable degrees of social interaction and to build and sustain their relations with others and with the self. Drawing upon a series of explorative studies, I address challenges of interpersonal boundary regulation in the context of social network services wherein 1) people may share content with multiple groups at once, 2) people may share content on behalf of others, 3) sharing can be achieved via automated mechanisms, and 4) sharing online and offline are connected in multiple ways. I argue that while widespread adoption of social network services disrupts central premises of interpersonal boundary regulation on which people are used to relying, interpersonal boundary regulation is best understood as a co-operative process also in our networked age. In fact, SNSs may even amplify the importance of co-operative boundary regulation and increase awareness of the necessary efforts. Instead of framing privacy solely as an issue of individuals control over information, this talk calls for reconsidering it beyond the individual level and across the many online and offline settings in which people come together.

Lac Operon - gene regulation in prokaryotes

13:24
This lecture explains the lac operon and the regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes by lac operon. The lac operon consists of three structural genes, and a promoter, a terminator, regulator, and an operator. The three structural genes are: lacZ, lacY, and lacA. lacZ encodes β-galactosidase (LacZ), an intracellular enzyme that cleaves the disaccharide lactose into glucose and galactose. This video lecture will teach you the mechanism of lac operon. It will also explain the positive and negative regulation of Lac operon and how it is controlled in response to the presence of Glucose. This video will also help you to realize the difference between a catabolic and an anabolic operon. How a Bill Becomes a Law: Crash Course Government and Politics #9

07:01
Oh my, Craig has his work cut out for him this week. The process of how a bill becomes a law can be pretty complex, fraught with potential bill-death at every corner. As if just getting through committee isn’t difficult enough, bills have to navigate a series of amendments and votes in both houses, potentially more committees, further compromise bills, and even more floor votes, just to end up on the chopping block of the president. And then in one fell swoop the president can stop a bill in its tracks with a veto! But then again, a presidential veto isn’t necessarily a bill’s end either. As you can see we’ve got to lot to cover, and we’ll be the first to admit this has been covered before, and extraordinarily well might we add, by the folks at School House Rock. But we’ll give it our best shot - without the singing of course. Well, not too much singing anyway. Positive Social Risks!: Chad Littlefield at TEDxPSU

06:16
People aren't objects in our way or vehicles to success. They have emotions, triumphs, failures, futures, and pasts. In his TED talk, Chad Littlefield encourages you to stretch your personal comfort zone, disrupt your pattern of social interaction, and make genuine connections with those around you through positive social risks. Chad is a senior studying Rehabilitation & Human Services and Psychology at the Pennsylvania State University. His passion for people is alive and contagious. As evident when, as a freshman, Chad founded the Clown Nose Club. The Clown Nose Club's mission, completely unrelated to actual clowns, is to challenge themselves and others to take "positive social risks" - a term which Chad coined. He also works as a facilitator for the World in Conversation and does research on social anxiety with the Center for Collegiate Mental Health. Chad plans to take his zeal and experiences into the Learning, Design, and Technology master's program at Penn State to study collaborative learning. His dream of "one day" working full-time to foster meaningful human connection is currently underway, as Chad is in the process of establishing his own collaboration consulting firm called "We!" In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Self-Discipline | Why It’s Important & How to Master Self-Control

09:26
Self-discipline and willpower are two of the biggest secrets to success. Improving, cultivating, and growing your self-control and self-discipline will serve you well in both your personal and professional life. Discipline is important because it allows us to live our lives the way we want. As a student, discipline allows you to study more effectively and use your time efficiently. Willpower and self-control allow you to eat healthier, exercise regularly, and be happier. This translates to stronger grades in school, more energy, improved moods, and looking and feeling better. Best Dark Chocolate Ever: http://geni.us/yTdrYXN The Ego-Depletion model of self-control states that our willpower reserves are finite and limited. Therefore, it is imperative you harness your discipline wisely. Three steps to cultivating self-discipline: 1. Start Small 2. Practice Daily 3. Ramp it Up Other Tips: 1. Make it easier for your future self 2. Build the appropriate reward and consequence systems 3. "Doing What You Love" is some of the most misunderstood and misguided advice. Instead grow to love the process. **Let us know how you plan to improve your discipline in the comments below!** Check out the accompanying article: http://medschoolinsiders.com/pre-med/self-discipline-master-self-control/ Music: https://soundcloud.com/lakeyinspired/lakey-inspired-signal ≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ WEBSITE: https://medschoolinsiders.com TWITTER: https://twitter.com/MedInsiders FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/medschoolinsiders INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/medschoolinsiders

The science of emotions: Jaak Panksepp at TEDxRainier

17:40
Given an inherent subjective nature, emotions have long been a nearly impenetrable topic for scientific research. Affective neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp explains a modern approach to emotions, and how taking seriously the emotions of other animals might soon improve the lives of millions. Jaak Panksepp introduced the concept of Affective Neuroscience in 1990, consisting of an overarching vision of how mammalian brains generate experienced affective states in animals, as effective models for fathoming the primal evolutionary sources of emotional feelings in human beings. This work has implications for further developments in Biological Psychiatry, ranging from an understanding of the underlying brain disorders, to new therapeutic strategies. Panksepp is a Ph.D. Professor and Baily Endowed Chair of Animal Well-Being Science, College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University. His scientific contributions include more than 400 papers devoted to the study of basic emotional and motivational processes of the mammalian brain. He has conducted extensive research on brain and bodily mechanisms of feeding and energy-balance regulation, sleep physiology, and most importantly the study of emotional processes, including associated feelings states, in other animals. This talk was given November 9, 2013 in Seattle at TEDxRainier, a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Data Tracking Has No Regulations and No Due Process

03:28
The Very Big Business of Tracking You In the age of big data, e-commerce, and status updates, consumers provide a near constant stream of personal information to the companies they interact with. Whether it's a shopping cart on Amazon, a family photo on Facebook, or a browsing history at Google, the data we provide about ourselves is becoming its own form of currency. But what price do we pay for participating in this information economy, and how much do we understand about the privacy we forfeit just by doing business? FTC Commissioner Julie Brill and investigative journalist Julia Angwin explore the implications of data collection on our personal liberty and ask: What are the smartest policies for the road ahead?

Bureaucracy Basics: Crash Course Government and Politics #15

06:59
This week Craig Benzine discuses bureaucracies. Bureaucracies tend to be associated with unintelligible rules and time-wasting procedures, but they play an important, though controversial, role in governing. From the FDA to the EPA, these agencies were established to help the government manage and carry out laws much more efficiently - to bring the rule making and enforcement closer to the experts. But the federal bureaucracy (which is part of the executive branch) has a lot of power and sometimes acts likes Congress in creating regulations and like the courts through administrative adjudications. It's all a bit problematic for that whole "separation of powers" thing. So we'll talk about that too, and the arguments for and against increased federal bureaucracy. Social Security 2100 Act: Reform in 2019!?! | Devin Carroll

07:34
Sweeping Social Security reform could happen SOON! I’m not talking about some minor adjustment to an obscure clause in the regulations, I’m talking about nearly everything changing. In this video I’ll break down the 6 BIG Changes that’s likely to affect YOU. The Social Security 2100 Act was first introduced in April of 2017. Since the House was still controlled by the Republicans, it died a quick death. Now it’s back. This time the Democrats are in control of the House and there is gossip that President Trump may be on board with his support. This is one you need to watch! It already has nearly enough co-sponsors to pass it through the House. The Senate is still controlled by Republicans, so it’s not as certain there but at the very least, this proposal will show you whats on the mind of the Democrats and give us a hint at how much support the Republicans are likely to give to a bill with these sorts of provisions. This proposal would include both tax cuts and tax increases, a change in the way cost of living adjustments are calculated, and an across-the-board benefit increase. After reading the Bill I want to share with you the 6 things I think will have the most impact on the majority of Americans. Just understand…this video is not a deep dive into each of these topic areas. It’s likely to change as the process moves forward and we’ll save the deep dive for a series of videos when and if we get a final signature ready Bill. Also, the purpose of this video is not to share my opinion of the proposal. Although I’m certainly not scared to do so, there are a few things that need working out before I can decide if I view this bill favorably or not. What I intend to do is give you a quick summary of this proposal that is devoid of the hyperbole that I’m sure you’ll hear from each side. Let’s get started with the 6 Big changes that’ll come from this Bill. ************************************************ ⚠️Since I don’t really know you, I can’t give you advice. Please don’t take this video as specific advice for your specific situation. Consult your own tax, legal and financial advisors. 😀 Read the Social Security 2100 Act and other material at Representative John Larson's site https://larson.house.gov/social-security-2100 . 08:13
Today, Craig is going to talk about something you fans out there have been demanding for months - money in politics. Specifically, we're going to talk about special interest groups and their role in the U.S. political system. Special interest groups are groups of individuals that make policy-related appeals to government - like the NRA, AARP, or the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It's all pretty controversial, as money plays an important role in the policies and people these groups influence, so we'll bring in the clones to argue for and against them.
