National Geographic - $400 Million Dollar Emerald HD

44:49
$400 Million Emerald Mystery It has a complicated and unfathomable history - will the authorities ever find an owner for the Bahia Emerald -- or will it prove just too powerful to shift? Find out in $400 Million Emerald Mystery and explore the gemstone's colourful history and analyse the different claims over it. The unearthing of what may be the world's largest emerald in Brazil is a truly remarkable story, but the staggering eight-way battle for its ownership is almost too astonishing to believe. Found in a Bahia mine in 2001, the remarkable stone, valued at $400 million, has since endured a bizarre odyssey, from an abandoned petrol station in San Jose to a submerged vault in Hurricane Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. With the gemstone trade a world of mystery and intrigue, the 840lb (381Kg) specimen has already changed hands in a Sao Paulo car park, been used as collateral in a diamond deal and even shown up on eBay!

Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA

02:32
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA. Emerald gemstone has many special qualities. From Sao Paolo, Brazil, Sergio Martins discusses the emerald gemstone history, industry and how sourcing this precious stone is performed in Brazilian mines. He explains the different types of Brazilian mining systems that exist at different locations throughout the country. The Belmont mine has a large area and conducts open pit mining on a large scale. They have consistently produced this precious gemstone for 30 years. Sergio also discusses the Nova Era mine, different from the other emerald mines because it belongs to over 140 people. Located in the area of Garimpeiro, emerald mining in this region involves miners making shafts and looking for the vein that leads to a large concentration of emerald, a “pocket”. Mining can take up to few years before any emerald stones are discovered, but once found, they can produce up to 10 million dollars worth of emeralds in one pocket. "Emerald mining in Zambia" by GIA

09:39
With that new GIA Field video you will be taken with the GIA Field Expedition (FE56) that took place in September 2014 in Zambia. You will surely feel the lure of emerald—central Africa’s green treasure—in this short GIA video. First, you’ll visit the Musakashi, Zambia, emerald mining area where mining is carried out by local people with simple hand tools. Next, you’ll travel with Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu and the GIA team to Zambia’s Kafubu area, one of Africa’s oldest gem-mining areas. “There are maybe 400 mines, and maybe less than 10 are active,” says Pardieu. While there, you’ll witness several active emerald mines. Some are very small-scale and operated by local people, while some, like the MIKU and the KAGEM mines, are very large. The latter is probably the largest colored gemstone mining pit in the world. In this video, you’ll view the entire KAGEM operation—a modern, highly sophisticated mechanized pit mine. As you stand on the rim of the pit, a ripple of explosions blasts ore for processing. You will witness workers recovering emeralds from the pit. You’ll also venture underground into Gemfields’ exploratory underground workings and see the firm’s secure processing and sorting facility. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

Gemstone mining in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka and Rough Sapphires found

00:32
This rough was found right during our mining trip in May 2017. Video by Ruwanpura Gems. Rough sapphires in various sizes and qualities come straight from the ground right in front of our eyes while shooting this video. Ratnapura is one of the major active mining areas in Sri Lanka. It produces sapphire in many colors, ruby, spinel, tourmaline, alexandrite and other gemstones. Large-scale mechanized mining allows to excavate big pits and work through tons of soil. Large scale gemstone mining is a complex process with lots of machinery involved. Gem mining in Sri Lanka gets many people employed, they work hard day by day to make a living and develop strong muscles. Gem-quality rough is still very hard to produce. Most of rough undertakes some kind of treatment (geuda, heat, beryllium, etc) to result in market-quality sellable gemstones. Добыча драгоценных камней на Шри-Ланке. Месторождение Ратнапура. Сырье сапфиров разных цветов, добытых за время нашей поездки. ***Sapphires splendidly cover the colour spectrum from one end to the other. Though technically a chemically pure sapphire would be colourless, trace minerals inside the stones create the kaleidoscope of tones and saturations reflected. Because of this, each piece is unique in both colour and clarity. Fine quality sapphires are rarer than diamonds. And some are more sought after than others such as the famous blue Ceylon sapphire which has been coveted by royalty for centuries.*** (extract from the MANY FACES OF SAPPHIRE chapter of the book "Sri Lanka Gems" by Vladyslav Yavorskyy)

Afghanistan's Secret Billion Dollar Emerald Mines

Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures For similar stories see: Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines https://youtu.be/c7iv1fef6qo Zimbabwe's Blood Diamond Killing Fields https://youtu.be/k9Bk5VIhjiY The Children Risking Their Lives In Underwater Gold Mines https://youtu.be/P1L_pxYZVwE "We have a lot of requests from Europe because the Emeralds from Afghanistan are the best in the world", Raphael says. He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? Gems Transparent Stones that comes from the Center of the Earth: Documentary

44:15
A gemstone (also called a gem, fine gem, jewel, precious stone or semi-precious stone) is a piece of mineral crystal which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewelry or other adornments.[1][2] However, certain rocks (such as lapis lazuli) or organic materials that are not minerals (such as amber, jet, and pearl) are also used for jewelry and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their luster or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone. Apart from jewelry, from earliest antiquity engraved gems and hardstone carvings, such as cups, were major luxury art forms. A gem maker is called a lapidary or gemcutter; a diamond worker is a diamantaire.

"Rubies from Montepuez, Mozambique" by GIA

18:09
In this video, you’ll explore Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby deposit with GIA’s dedicated field gemology team. First, you’ll see how the legal owner of the mining rights—Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), a subsidiary of the Gemfields corporation—works the area in steps from prospecting through separating the rubies from the ore, to sorting and eventual sale at their Singapore rough auction. In the second part you’ll also catch a glimpse of a day in the life of the thousands of unlicensed miners—garimpeiros—who conduct unauthorized mining in the MRM-owned area. Since spring 2009, this east African country has emerged as the world’s leading ruby source. As Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu says of the Montepuez ruby deposit: “I have never seen any place where you have this combination of quantity, nice color, and nice clarity.” Every gem miner dreams of finding a big stone one day. “The garimpeiros here, most of them are local (meaning Mozambican) people,” explains Pardieu, “but there are also some Tanzanians here who are working with them. And the Tanzanians have a very good knowledge of ruby mining because you have ruby mining in Tanzania for more than 50 years.” You’ll see the conditions garimpeiros work under—the pits, the dirt—the rubies they find and how they live, and visit a garimpeiro village. Finally, you’ll visit foreign buyers in Montepuez, which, Pardieu explains, consist of “about 500 to 600 Thai people and about 100 people from Sri Lanka.” The cash gained by these buyers provides the economic impetus for continuing unauthorized mining inside the MRM perimeter. This GIA Field Expedition (FE56) took place in September 2014. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

PLEASE SEE REVISED "OPAL ONLY" version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-TR2ewSjvs In January, 2018, the Australian government announced the closing of the town of Mintabie, where, in some of the world's best opal was mined. Mintabie is in Aboriginal lands, although in a resolution, the government leased the town for a period of time, ending in the early 2000's. The reason for the closure of the town (and the mines) was, in my view due to the depletion of opal. Most of the miners left and the town declined, prompting closure. This video is intended as a celebration of the great opal town of Mintabie and its fabulous opal.

AQUAMARINE GEMS GEMSTONES STONES MINE HUGE DEADLY CAVE-IN @ LAVRA PEDRA GRANDE BRAZIL

08:41
THIS VIDEO IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY GEMSTONESOFBRAZIL.COM, Lavra Pedra Grande in a Gemstone mine located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, near the small beautiful town of Itaiomi. My mining crew and I arrived and started cleaning this mine at the end of 2013, which was the first major cleanup in the mine since the mine totally caved in 2002. Even though the mine has been a gem mine for over 50 years, and is recognized by the Brazilian government to have the mineral compositions to extract Aquamarine and Tourmaline gemstones which is documented in the mines Brazilian governments mineral rights agreements. Cleanup took 6 months of very very intensive cleaning using a Caterpillar 320D. After the cleanup was completed, my mining crew and I got very busy looking gemstones in the mine. Over the fallowing 6 months we found evidence of green tourmaline and found a lot of Aquamarine gemstones. In the beggining we discovered a crack on top of the mountain above the mine and was told by many sources that this crack was there before 2002. The crack ran along the highest top ledge of mountain above the mine, and at first the crack was very thin and everyone dispelled it as something not to worry about, but we agreed to keep our eyes on the crack. With time, rain, and with hundreds of mining demolition blasting below the mountain the crack was slowly getting larger. The first video above was shot 2 days before the second video was shot showing the mine caving down into the mining areas. It was the day of the first video I decided to pull my mining crew and equipment out of the mine and stop all work because the crack was getting larger, and I could not risk anyone`s life. At this point I felt it was time to close the mine because it was to dangerous to work below the mountain. As a last resort to continue mining for gems my mining crew and I agreed to set explosive charges on another crack on a smaller hill outside the danger zone below the mountain. Two days after I removed everyone from below the mountain`s danger zone we set the explosive charges on top of the small hill. We used 1 liter soda bottles filled with granulated explosives to cause 3 times the normal blast with each soda bottle hoping the explosion would open the cracks on the small hill to cause the hill`s stone ledge to fall down so we could continue mining by making this area safe. We set the explosive charges on the hill and everyone took their safe positions waiting for the explosives to explode. The explosion toke place but was not loud and somewhat drown out by the dirt that was use to cover the soda bottles inside the hills crack hoping to cause more impact in the explosion. We all came out of our safe places to view the result of the blast. After examining the blast site we realized that the blast did not do anything at all to effect in any way the small hills crack, and we all knew this plan will ever be successful in the future. We walked down from the small hill to the truck near the water containers and I was thinking or mining is over until God decides to do his will and cause the mountain`s ledge to fall down and eliminate the dangers caused by the crack on the mountain, which could very possibly be 10 years or more, only God would know. When we arrived at the truck we started to hear a crackling noise coming from the mountain. To our great surprise we started to see sand and stones falling from the mountain. Well the rest of the story is in the video, please watch. After the mountain`s cave in, I decided it was God`s will to take the mountain down in which I felt he was telling me not to give up. The very next day we started cleaning the mine for a second time with 2 tractors which took one and a half months to complete the cleanup and continued to find Aquamarine.

12 Amazing Rare And Valuable Gemstone Discoveries

07:36
From the most famous gemstone in the world the Hope Diamond the a discovery of the giant Jadeite, 12 rare and expensive gems! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. Heart of Eternity The Heart of Eternity weighs in at 27.64 carats, and it is another that was found at the Premier Diamond Mine in South Africa. The diamond was unveiled in January of 2000 alongside a lot of other diamonds. The shape and name of the stone were most likely inspired by the fictional Heart of the Ocean that was featured in the mega-blockbuster Titanic. This stone was almost stolen in November of 2000, but the thieves never managed to do it. In 2012, people though Floyd Mayweather might have bought the stone for an engagement ring for his fiance, but the buyer of the diamond was never revealed. 5. Massive Jadeite Jadeite is one of the world’s most expensive and rare gemstones in the world. Myanmar is the leading producer of this rare and beautiful gem, and the stone was found in a mine in Kachin within the country. The translucent, intensely colored gem is not to be confused with the more traditional jade. The two stones may be related, but Jadeite is rarer and substantially more valuable. That is what makes this discovery of this massive jadeite deposit all the more impressive. The huge stone was discovered in Myanmar in 2016 in a jade mine. The stone that was found is worth a staggering 170 million. The gem is 14 feet high and 19 feet long. The country plans to sell the giant gem to the neighboring China so that it can be made into jewelry and other items. Jadeite is worth about $20,000 per karat. 4. Millennium Star This diamond takes the title second largest top grade diamond behind the Centenary Diamond. Weighing in at 203.04 carats, it's a class D colorless, pear-shaped diamond. It's insured for over $120 million. It was found in Zaire, which is a country in Africa, in 1990. This is one of the diamonds that was featured alongside The Heart of Eternity. It was almost stolen in November in 2000 alongside the Heart of Eternity in the exhibition that was done by De Beers. 3. Great Chrysanthemum Diamond Although the name's a mouthful, this diamond maintains a reputation as one of the most famous diamonds in the world. It was discovered in 1963 in South Africa, and it weighs around 198 carats. It's an orange-brown color that is the central focus of a necklace that also features 410 other diamonds. The diamond was on display at the Smithsonian alongside the Hope Diamond briefly, and it's been on display in many other places. Today, the necklace is owned by an anonymous person who bought it for about 30 million. It's one of only 300 diamonds all over the world that measure in at over 100 carats among a lot of other stones on the list. 2. Cullinan Diamond This is another diamond with a pretty storied past. It was found in 1905 in South Africa and after is was refined it was presented to King Edward VII on his 66th birthday. Several diamonds were cut from the rough one found, but the most famous, Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa, is considered the crown jewel of the British Monarchy. Cullinan I makes up the centerpiece and head of the royal scepter that is wielded by the supreme rulers at formal events like coronations. Cullinan II takes up another prominent place in the official crown of the reigning royalty. Nine different stones were cut from the original, and they each vary in size. Each stone also has history attached to them. It's been a pretty eventful 100 years for these rocks. There isn't a price tag on these jewels but given that they have been owned by the British Monarchy for so long, the price wouldn't be inexpensive. 1.Hope Diamond The Hope Diamond is the single most famous gemstone in the world. It's inspired movies, been worn by famous people, and it even has a curse attached to it. The diamond weighs in at 45.52 carats, and it is believed to have been found in India. The diamond got its start in France, though, when King Louis XIV first owned it. It was passed down by the French nobles until the French Revolution when it was stolen after King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were decapitated. From then on, the diamond has had 17 owners, including British royalty, Thomas Hope who it got its name from, Pierre Cartier, Harry Winston, and where it currently resides at the Smithsonian. Right now it is insured for $250 million dollars, and it isn't for sale.

Gemstone Mining, Secret Crystal Claim, Colorado Crystals, Our Adventures! (Part 4)

We met a fellow prospector last year at a gem show, who offered us a chance to go dig on his undisclosed crystal claim. (Due to a rash of "High-graders" and irresponsible hikers) We happily exchanged our time and labor to get his spot, "Up to snuff." in time for the opening of this season and, for a chance to dig in one of his harder to reach digs. He said the digs were sweet but on the far corner of his claim, and only Smokey's and Fluorite were there....What we find surprises us all.

AQUAMARINE GEMS GEMSTONES STONES BATS FLYING FILLED MINE TUNNEL CAVE @ LAVRA PEDRA GRANDE BRAZIL

06:40
THIS VIDEO IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY GEMSTONESOFBRAZIL.COM. The Brazilian mine named Lavra Pedra Grande has been a family owned mine over 50 years. Many Brazilian miners dug for gemstones in this mine and the stories are endless within the Brazilian communities living in the small towns surrounding the Lavra Pedra Grande mine about the many that found their fortunes in this mine and of those that never found anything. The tunnel in this video was dug over 16 years ago and local rumors tells stories about the gemstones that were taken from this tunnel system. You will see that at the end of this tunnel there is a large round pit, and on the bottom of the pit there is a hole that the bats flew in order to leave this tunnel. We, my mining team and I, discovered another tunnel below this hole that this hole gained access through, and that second tunnel system went even deeper below the pit in this video. The extensiveness of this tunnel system, and the fact it was dug by hand, pick, and shovel strongly indicates that the miners dug these tunnels found the gemstones of Brazil. Today as in most open gemstone mining tunnels of this kind found dotted around the Lavra Pedra Grande mine they are now the homes of Brazilian free-tailed bats, which have a mouse-like tails. The stories of the Lavra Pedra Grande mine are endless and are stamped in time. Our lives cleaning and mining gemstone in this mine will always be a part of our souls like those that we can see were here before us, sharing the one true feeling that god is by our side, and fell his glory in the stones.
