Net 30 is a pretty simple explanation. But what happens after that, can cause you some headaches. Net 30, or whatever number you place next to the word Net, is the timeframe in which you are giving your customer to pay you the amount on that invoice. Net 30, being the most popular terms. Many businesses will use the term of Net 30 and if payment is not received by that date, a late fee can be assessed. As long as that is indicated on the terms of payment. The same holds true if you desire your customer to pay early. Giving them an incentive pay at the 15 day mark, can provide both parties benefits. You might see terms such as 2/15 Net 30 on a bill sometimes. The customer gets a break on the total and hopefully your business gets cash in the door in a reasonable time. But as we know, that’s doesn’t always happen. So a few tips to help you get paid on time. First, make sure your customer knows your payment terms. Whatever it is you desire, make it clear. Net 30, Net 15, discounts for early payment, whatever your payment terms, outline them clearly. And, let your customer know these terms. If you get to that 30-day mark and you have not received payment, it’s time to send out a statement and even make a quick call to make sure they were happy with the service you provided and to remind them that they have an outstanding invoice due. Be nice, be diplomatic, because right now, it’s just a friendly reminder. Advance payment Which is the best method of payment in an export trade? What type of terms of payment can I adopt an Export business? Under any kind of sales, obviously, advance payment is the best option for payment. Ok, now the terms of payments are concerned, you are very happy if you get payment in advance. Right? Yes, the 100% safe business in any business, especially in export business, is nothing but receiving the advance payment. However, in this present competitive world, you do not expect advance payment from the buyer in all cases unless your product attracts some specific reasons to pay you to advance payment by your buyer. 2. Letter of credit.( L.C.) Letter of credit is an assurance given by the buyer’s bank to remit the amount to the seller through seller’s bank on maturity, as per the terms and conditions of the document based on the contractual agreement between buyer and seller. Now in simple words, If LC opened on your name, you will receive amount through the buyer’s bank on the agreed time. There are various types of letters of credits like Revocable, Irrevocable, Confirmed, Unconfirmed, Clean & Documentary, Fixed, Revolving, Transferable, Back to Back etc. Most common and safe LC is Irrevocable Letter of Credit. I will explain in details about all types of LC in other videos. 3. DP basis - Documents against Payments: What is DP term of payment? How does DP term of payment work? DP OR DAP term of payment is one of the terms of payment in international trade. D.A.P or D/P terms of payment means, Documents Against Payment. Once cargo shipped out from supplier’s premises, after completing necessary export legal formalities of exporting country, he hands over goods to the carrier who transport to the final destination of a buyer. After delivery of goods, the exporter is issued Bill of Lading (undersea shipment) or Airway Bill (under air shipment) by Carrier or his agent. Exporter submits all required documents along with Bill of Lading /Airway bill, invoice, packing list, bill of exchange with the bank to send to the buyer through buyer’s bank. The seller’s bank, once after verification sends these shipping documents to the buyer through buyer’s bank. After receipt of such shipping documents by buyer’s bank notifies buyer on receipt of documents and advise to ‘accept’ the documents by effecting payment of export proceeds. Under a DP terms of payment (DAP terms of payment), the buyer collects original shipping documents from his bank after making necessary payment against the sale of goods. 4. D.A terms means Documents against Acceptance Payment terms ‘DA’ means Documents against Acceptance. As per D.A terms, once the shipping documents along with bills of exchange received by the buyer’s bank, the buyer is informed to accept documents from buyer’s bank. The buyer accepts documents by signing bills of exchange sent by the exporter, agreeing to pay the value of goods shipped as per agreed period of time. (say, 30 days from the date of bill of lading, 60 days from the date of bill of lading or 90 days from the date of bill of lading). Importer receives original shipping documents by ‘accepting’ bill of exchange. He completes import customs clearance procedures with the said original shipping documents and approach carrier to deliver cargo to him after completion of such import customs clearance. The payment against the sale of goods is effected upon the maturity day mentioned in the bill of exchange. Documents against Acceptance - Is it safe for the seller? In payment terms, is DA safe for an Exporter? Does importer make payment on maturity of the contracted period? How reliable DA terms in exports? As per my opinion, the legal strength on D.A terms is very weak in international legal terms. Ok, if you have a strong business relationship with your buyer, you can ship goods on ‘credit’ basis. A proper study of the buyer’s creditworthiness is a dare need while shipping under D.A.terms. Gross vs Net Method of Accounting for Sales Discounts

This video shows the difference between the gross method and the net method of accounting for Sales Discounts. Some companies offer discounts to customers for paying their bill within a specific period of time. It is very common to see, "2/10, n/30" on a bill, which means the customer will receive a 2% discount off the sales price if the bill is paid within 10 days, but if the bill is not paid within 10 days then the entire amount is due within 30 days. A company can account for these sales discounts using either the Gross Method or the Net Method. Under the Net Method, we assume that the customer will receive the discount when we initially record the sale. Thus, we record Sales Revenue and Accounts Receivable as if the customer had taken the discount. If the customer does end up paying early and getting the discount, we simply debit Cash for the amount received and credit Accounts Receivable for the same amount. If, however, the customer does not end up receiving the discount, they will pay more than we initially recorded. We debit Cash for the full balance (without the discount) and credit the receivable. To make the debits and credits balance, we credit an account called "Other Income" or "Sales Discount Forfeited" or "Interest Revenue." Under the Gross Method, we do not assume that the customer will receive the discount when we initially record the sale. Thus, if the customer doesn't receive the discount and pays the full amount, we simply debit Cash for the amount received and credit Accounts Receivable for the corresponding amount. If the customer does end up receiving the discount, however, we debit Cash for the amount received and credit Accounts Receivable. To make the debits and credits balance, we also debit an account called Sales Discounts. Sales Discounts will then be subtracted from Gross Sales on the Income Statement to yield Net Sales. Accounts payable is money owed by a business to its suppliers shown as a liability on a company's balance sheet. It is distinct from notes payable liabilities, which are debts created by formal legal instrument documents. An accounts payable is recorded in the Account Payable sub-ledger at the time an invoice is vouched for payment. Vouchered, or vouched, means that an invoice is approved for payment and has been recorded in the General Ledger or AP subledger as an outstanding, or open, liability because it has not been paid. Payables are often categorized as Trade Payables, payables for the purchase of physical goods that are recorded in Inventory, and Expense Payables, payables for the purchase of goods or services that are expensed. Common examples of Expense Payables are advertising, travel, entertainment, office supplies and utilities. A/P is a form of credit that suppliers offer to their customers by allowing them to pay for a product or service after it has already been received. Suppliers offer various payment terms for an invoice. Payment terms may include the offer of a cash discount for paying an invoice within a defined number of days. For example, 2%, Net 30 terms mean that the payer will deduct 2% from the invoice if payment is made within 30 days. If the payment is made on Day 31 then the full amount is paid. In households, accounts payable are ordinarily bills from the electric company, telephone company, cable television or satellite dish service, newspaper subscription, and other such regular services. Householders usually track and pay on a monthly basis by hand using cheques, credit cards or internet banking. In a business, there is usually a much broader range of services in the A/P file, and accountants or bookkeepers usually use accounting software to track the flow of money into this liability account when they receive invoices and out of it when they make payments. Increasingly, large firms are using specialized Accounts Payable automation solutions (commonly called ePayables) to automate the paper and manual elements of processing an organization's invoices. Commonly, a supplier will ship a product, issue an invoice, and collect payment later, which describes a cash conversion cycle, a period of time during which the supplier has already paid for raw materials but hasn't been paid in return by the final customer. When the invoice is received by the purchaser, it is matched to the packing slip and purchase order, and if all is in order, the invoice is paid. This is referred to as the three-way match. The three-way match can slow down the payment process, so the method may be modified. For example, three-way matching may be limited solely to large-value invoices, or the matching is automatically approved if the received quantity is within a certain percentage of the amount authorized in the purchase order.

If one takes the time to learn and implement this method of eliminating debt, one may find themselves pleasantly surprised of how quickly their home mortgage, auto loans, student loans or business loans can be completely paid off. This strategy is known as Velocity Banking and in the video I will demonstrate how Velocity Banking can be used to pay off a 30 year home mortgage in just 5-7 years without sending double payments to the bank or changing one’s current level of income. RECAP OF THE VIDEO: I start off by creating a scenario of a financial situation by taking an average household net income in the United States combined with some of the basic monthly expenses: home mortgage, minimum payment on a credit card, car payment and living expenses which include groceries, utilities, gym membership… Once all expenses are identified and subtracted from the net monthly income it is important to understand the impact of cash flow, the difference between a loan and a line of credit, how the interest of a loan and a line of credit is calculated, and how monthly payments on a mortgage are dispersed between interest and principal paydown. To help demonstrate these differences I create tables and an amortization graph. As I go on to unveil the main differences I also identify the biggest reason why nowadays most homeowners are unable to payoff their home mortgages due to the unstrategic use of home refinancing. By this point having had identified the difference between a loan and a line of credit I can reveal the benefits of utilizing a line of credit to pay off a home mortgage in 5-7 years. This is where I get into the Velocity Banking strategy which incorporates an unaccustomed method of moving one’s entire monthly paycheck into a line of credit instead of the accustomed checkings and savings accounts. To get approved they will want to see that you do have: established payment experiences, an established credit profile with at least one preferably two reporting agencies and positive credit scores with the reporting agencies that your credit is being reported. Some starter revolving accounts include: Radio Shack, Lowes, Home Depot, Staples, and Office Depot. Most major stores do offer business credit even though they don’t promote that they do. So once you have followed the steps outlined here, you can start getting credit with these major retailers: BP, Chevron, Walmart, and Target. These stores also offer business credit: Amazon.com, Best Buy, Nordstrom's, Sam’s Club, Costco, and many more. Check out who are some stores that offer business credit. Step 3… Once you have a total of 10 payment experiences you can then start getting approved for cash credit sources. It’s also recommended that you have at least one account with a $10,000 high credit limit so your cash limits are as high as possible.

When I read about this trick I thought that it would only help raise my credit score up maybe 5 - 10 points. So, I was so surprised to see it jump that high. Okay, the trick is to become an, AUTHORIZED USER on someone's credit card. Now, you really have to trust that person. It could be your: brother, sister, mom, dad, girlfriend, boyfriend, it doesn't matter. They just have to be someone who is very responsible with their credit cards because if they aren't it could hurt your credit instead. I'll go more into that later. Alright so you've found someone with good credit that pays their card on time and doesn't max out their card. That's step one. The next step is to have them put you on their card as an authorized user. What that does is all their on time payments, all their low credit utilization, and higher credit limits will reflect onto your credit record. That's it, all that good stuff that their doing will boost up your credit score, big time! It's really that easy and it's also free. Now, the downside is that if you find someone with bad habits of maxing out their cards and paying late, that will reflect on your credit score too. That's why I really mean it when I say find someone who is very responsible. If that person is hesitant to add you on their card, tell them to not worry because you're not going to be touching their card. All you're doing is getting a boost from their good card usage. Remember this is what I did to increase my credit score 43 points. I'm not a credit lawyer or whatever so use this info at your own disclosure. It's legal, fast, free, and easy. Short-term debt is paid within a year and is accounted for as current liabilities in the balance sheet, either as accounts payable or short-term debt. Accounts payable or AP is related to suppliers’ invoices that need to be paid, and short-term debt involves a financial institution, like your credit card, a bank, or another lender. The first type of short-term debt is self-generating debt. That is money you owe for the use of products or services that you haven’t paid but have used. For example, the payment of a consultant, electricity, or that computer that you bought with your credit card. In the case of accounts payable, most suppliers and vendors provide short-term financing in the form of credit terms. For example, a net 30 invoice means that you have 30 days to make payment without incurring an interest charge. A term of 2/10 net 30 means that you will receive a two percent discount if you pay within ten days, the full amount is due within 30 days, and there are interest charges after that. Accounts payable to a client are accounts receivable to the supplier. And here is a tip for you from my experience. Collecting payment can be expensive, add a note to your invoices that say: buyer agrees to pay for collection expenses for invoices due over 90 days. You can also consider factoring, which we covered in unfunding mechanisms. Credit cards are a form of revolving debt, meaning that the amount of credit available is a function of the outstanding balance on a line of credit. Payments reduce the amount owed, interest increases it. Principal and accrued interest must be paid until the owed balance is zero. Credit cards are especially appropriate for debt that occurs on a monthly basis, such as fuel and material costs. Another type of short debt is a line of credit. This is a very flexible type of credit source extended by a bank or financial institution to a company and can take the form of a cash credit, overdraft, term loan, demand loan, export packing credit, discount or a purchase of commercial bills. A company can tap into this resource when a need arises. Even though this represents a reservoir of available capital, interest is only owed on the money actually borrowed. This type of credit is usually used for short-term needs, and is paid back in a short period of time. A letter of credit is different than a line of credit. It is a trade loan issued by a bank to an international exporter of goods. The terms of the letter specify an amount of money that can be collected when the letter is presented to a bank. Often, the letter must be accompanied by certain documents, such as bills of sale, that evidence a sales transaction. The purpose of the letter of credit is to ensure that an exporter receives payment not to negotiate sales transactions.

MOQ, MSRP, MAP, FOB, EXW, etc are some of the terms you'll need to learn There are many more and I'll list all of them here for you! Terms 1. Back-Order: Products that you have ordered but they have not shipped. This is usually due to depleted manufacturer’s inventory 2. Bank Reference: Contact information for the bank you have your business checking account with. Suppliers will typically ask for this if you are applying for credit terms. 3. Bill of Lading (BOL): A legal document between the shipper of goods, and the carrier. Generally when items are shipped via LTL, the truck driver will hand you a BOL to sign off on. When you do so, it legally transfers the property of the items from the shipping company to you. 4. Business License: This is a license that may be issued by a city or county. Not every city/county requires this – check your local jurisdiction. 5. Case Pack: This is the number of units that come in a case. Sometimes you will see “inner case”, “outer case” or “master case”. It really means there are three potential levels of case packs. For example, a master case may have 48 units, outer case 24 units, and inner case 12 units. The supplier may say you have to order in a specific type of case pack. To stick with this example, if they say you can only buy in outer case packs, you have to buy in sets of 24 units . 6. Company Credit Card: A credit card that has your company name on it. When you sign up for your first one, you will likely need to personally guarantee it with your personal credit. At times, manufacturers / brand owners may ask specifically for a company credit card. 7. Cooperative Advertising: When a manufacturer, brand owner or distributor shares advertising costs with a retailer. Cost of Goods Sold: The amount paid for wholesale merchandise sold including delivery costs. 8. Distributor: An intermediary between manufacturers / brand owners and retailers. They purchase from manufacturers or importers in quantity, and re-sell the items to secondary wholesalers or retailers. 9. FEIN or EIN: Federal Employer Identification Number. Suppliers will ask for this to ensure you are a legit company. 10. FOB (Free on Board): The physical location where goods transfer from the seller to the buyer. 11. Gross Profit: The difference between GROSS sales and the cost of goods sold (COGS) before operating expenses are taken out to determine net profit. 12. In-House Accounts: Some companies will use outside sales reps to sell their items. An In House account is when your account is handled by someone inside the company selling the item. 13. Independent Sales Representative: One person or a couple working as a commissioned sales representative. 14. Keystone Pricing or Keystoning: Doubling the wholesale cost by the retailer. This is usually the recommended markup by most manufacturers / brand owners. 15. Less Than Truckload (LTL): This is when you order items and they are shipped via pallet. If the amount of pallets you order are less than the amount that can fill up a full truck (roughly 26 pallets), it is called “Less Than Truckload”. 16. Manufacturers Representatives: Independent sales representatives, that represent one or more manufacturers / brand owners. They will typically take orders from retailers on behalf of the manufacturers / brand owners and usually serve as customer service contacts. 17. Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP): The price the manufacturer recommends that a retailer should sell the item for. 18. Margin / gross margin: The percentage of the COGS / Selling Price 19. Mark-up: The dollar amount or percentage that a product is “marked up” from the cost, to create a wholesale or retail price. 20. Minimum Advertised Price (MAP): The price the manufacturer / brand owner does not want a product to be sold less than. Amazon notoriously has problems with complying with MAP guidelines. 21. Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ): This specifies the lowest quantity of a certain product a supplier is willing to sell. Some companies may say “you must order at least $500 on a transaction”. That would be the MOQ for that specific supplier, and can be spread among multiple products. MOQ’s for some suppliers may also be case packs. 22. NET 15, NET 30, NET 60: When establishing credit terms with a supplier, they will typically offer a grace period for how long you can take to make a payment. The number after NET represents the amount of days you have to make a payment of the net balance. So, NET 15 = 15 days, NET 30 = 30 days, etc. 23. Net Profit: Gross profit minus operating expenses.
