Growing Number of Schools Say Bye to Homework

02:22
(26 Sep 2016) Nats – teacher: "How many of us remember that from yesterday?" THE STUDENTS IN MS. MITCHELL'S 4TH GRADE CLASS.... ARE EAGER TO ASK QUESTIONS. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO HOMEWORK.. THE ENTHUSIASM TURNS INTO SOMETHING ELSE. SOUNDBITE: Maxine Mann, Fourth-grader, Oakridge Elementary I get stressed out." SOUNDBITE: Hana Stack, Fourth-grader, Oakridge Elementary "It was so stressful." SOUNDBITE: Michael Gonzales, Fourth-grader, Oakridge Elementaryold student, Oakridge Elementary "I feel like I'm getting rushed around the house and I don't have any time to play outside." WHILE THOSE COMPLAINTS AREN'T NEW... A GROWING NUMBER OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAVE DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. PRINCIPAL CHRISTY HIETT IMPLEMENTED A NO HOMEWORK POLICY IN HER ALABAMA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THIS FALL . SOUNDBITE Christy Hiett, Principal Fruithurst Elementary: "Determined through the articles that I had read that there was no benefit academically for homework for elementary school students." IN HIS BOOK " THE HOMEWORK MYTH," ALFIE KOHN A LEADING VOICE IN EDUCATION_ FOUND NO CORRELATION BETWEEN AFTER SCHOOL WORK AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS. SOUNDBITE: ALFIE KOHN, Author, "The Homework Myth" "More educators are finally realizing that homework is all pain and no gain for children. And perhaps they are being helped in that realization by parents." SOUNDBITE Kimberly Mitchell, Fourth-grade teacher: "And so I found that our students are coming to school a little less stressed, a little less exhausted." GIVING FAMILIES MORE CONTROL OVER THEIR TIME WAS PART OF THE REASON OAKRIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN VIRGINIA DID AWAY WITH HOMEWORK THIS YEAR. SOUNDBITE Lynne Wright, Principal, Oakridge Elementary School: "What our children really needed is time reading, time with family, time outside, having opportunities for other sorts of learning outside of school." THE MOVE_ WELCOMED BY PARENTS STRUGGLING TO KEEP UP WITH MULTIPLE AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. SOUNDBITE: Harriet Morgan, Parent, Oakridge Elementary: "I am so grateful to not have that round of battles again in elementary school." BUT OTHER SCHOOLS SAY THEY HAVE NO PLANS TO DITCH HOMEWORK. DUKE UNIVERSITY RESEARCHER HARRIS COOPER SAYS ALL KIDS SHOULD BE DOING HOMEWORK…BUT HOW MUCH DEPENDS ON THEIR AGE. SOUNDBITE Harris Cooper, Professor Psychology and Neuroscience, Duke University: "Homework has benefits for kids that go beyond academic achievement. By giving kids an opportunity to begin developing study habits, even in the second grade. And time management skills." BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY.... YOU WON'T HEAR THESE KIDS COMPLAINING WHEN THE BELL RINGS... AND THEY DON'T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT SCHOOL TILL TOMORROW. Homework in High School: How Much Is Too Much?

06:41
It’s not hard to find a high school student who is stressed about homework. Many are stressed to the max--juggling extracurricular activities, jobs, and family responsibilities. It can be hard for many students, particularly low-income students, to find the time to dedicate to homework. So students in the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs program at YouthBeat in Oakland, California are asking what’s a fair amount of homework for high school students? TEACHERS: Get your students in the discussion on KQED Learn, a safe place for middle and high school students to investigate controversial topics and share their voices. https://learn.kqed.org/topics/29 ABOVE THE NOISE is a show that cuts through the hype and investigates the debates behind controversial and trending topics in the news. Hosted by Myles Bess. *NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER WEDNESDAY* SUBSCRIBE by clicking the RED BUTTON above. Follow us on Instagram @kqedabovethenoise ** Is homework beneficial to students? The homework debate has been going on for years. There’s a big body of research that shows that homework can have a positive impact on academic performance. It can also help students prepare for the academic rigors of college. ** Does homework hurt students? Some research suggests that homework is only beneficial up to a certain point. Too much homework can lead to compromised health and greater stress in students. Many students, particularly low-income students, can struggle to find the time to do homework, especially if they are working jobs after school or taking care of family members. Some students might not have access to technology, like computers or the internet, that are needed to complete assignments at home-- which can make completing assignments even more challenging. Many argue that this contributes to inequity in education-- particularly if completing homework is linked to better academic performance. ** How much homework should students get? Based on research, the National Education Association recommends the 10-minute rule stating students should receive 10 minutes of homework per grade per night. But opponents to homework point out that for seniors that’s still 2 hours of homework which can be a lot for students with conflicting obligations. And in reality, high school students say it can be tough for teachers to coordinate their homework assignments since students are taking a variety of different classes. Some people advocate for eliminating homework altogether. Sources Edweek: How Much Homework Is Enough? Should America BAN Homework?

07:58
Students and parents alike are getting tired of homework. Parents claim that their children are dealing with unnecessary stress and suffering from depression, because of the amount of homework that is given out in school. Their is a movement now in education to ban homework and focus more on in-class learning. Cenk Uygur and Hannah Cranston (Think Tank) hosts of The Young Turks discuss. Do you think homework should be banned? Let us know in the comments below. Read more here: http://articles.philly.com/2015-10-27/news/67762220_1_homework-vicki-abeles-assignments “Amy Clipston had a request that was a new one for her daughter's first-grade teacher. Many parents had marched in to demand that their children, even those who couldn't tie their shoes yet, get more homework. Clipston was the first to request the opposite - that her daughter opt out of homework altogether. "I felt my child was doing quite fine in school," said Clipston, a chemist with three children, noting that her daughter's schoolday in the highly competitive Lower Merion School District was 61/2 hours, with a 20-minute recess. "I felt 10 to 20 minutes of homework a night was not accomplishing anything."

The Homework Struggle Is Real!

01:46
The (homework) struggle is real! This is a video showing my eight year old daughter with ADHD avoiding doing her homework. With her permission, I am posting this video to show people what doing homework is like for many children with ADHD. Just FYI, she does end up completing every single homework assignment. I let her get her energy, wiggles, and emotions out (like you see in the video) and then we use a variety of tactics to make homework more enjoyable for her. 9 Things You Should Never Forbid Children from Doing

07:46
Psychologists think that limits make a child feel safer and calmer. However, certain restraints can do just the opposite, making your little one feel insecure and slowing their development. Here are some things you should allow your kids to do – for instance, crying and being noise. TIMESTAMPS Asking questions 0:43 Feeling angry or jealous 1:52 Being greedy 2:13 Saying "no" 2:55 Having secrets 3:17 Being afraid 4:26 Being noisy 5:00 Crying 5:32 Making mistakes 6:07 Don’t be shy to offer your help 6:48 SUMMARY - Ask your child some questions as well. One of them might be 'How was your day?' If at first your child doesn’t want to respond or just says something like ’fine’ or ’everything’s ok,’ you don’t need to insist on a fuller answer. Tell your child about your day, things you have learned, and the things you have enjoyed. - A child is a person, and they have the right to have negative feelings. Remember that their willpower isn’t strong yet, and they have trouble controlling themselves. Your kids shouldn’t just stop expressing their feelings if we think they’re "bad" ones. - A child has the right to have things of their own, just as adults do. Never shame them for being greedy. Instead, ask them to exchange their toys with other kids. - Your child isn’t your subject; they’re a family member in their right. Forbidding them to say "no" to you means violating their borders. Instead, try to find a way to explain to them why they sometimes must do what they don’t want to. - The older your kids are, the more they need their privacy. You should know what’s going on in their lives, but make sure you don’t trespass. Your kids’ trust is priceless, and it’s best not to risk it by reading their diaries or pressing them for secrets. However, always show your kid that you're interested in them. - Little kids may become scared of a doctor or a strange relative, and that’s fine. Don’t shame them for being afraid, but let them know you’re there and there’s nothing to fear. Also, if you have a son, never tell him anything like, ‘Boys are not meant to get scared’ or ‘Men don’t have a right to express their feelings.’ - Don’t spoil your kid’s childhood. Let them sing songs and make noises. When they grow up, the society won't them let do many things and will force them to follow a lot of rules. - Children feel everything much more vividly than adults. Don’t forbid your kid to cry, nor shame them for tears. It’s better to help them understand why they’re crying and find a way to deal with it. - No one likes making mistakes, and it’s even worse when an adult scolds you for them. It’s no surprise that a child won’t ever want to do anything on their own after that. Never say ‘You should be ashamed of yourself’ or ‘You’re a bad person’. BONUS Most of us find it difficult asking other people for help. A child who is not used to getting help with small things won’t ask their parents for assistance in difficult situations either. Take small steps at first. Offer your child help with cleaning their room or doing their homework. Don’t be afraid to ask. Do you know any other parenting mistakes that all of us should avoid? Why Elementary School Kids Should Not Have Homework – Dudes To Dads Ep 77 [AUDIO ONLY]

29:11
It’s back to school time. This means routines, schedules, and chaos. You must listen to this episode! It’s really important that parents, teachers, and administration hear this. We first discuss some of the benefits of homework, 10 Benefits of Homework by John Bishop, Author of Goal Setting For Students: Homework teaches students about time management. Homework teaches students how to set priorities. Homework helps teachers determine how well the lessons and material are being understood by their students. Homework teaches students how to problem solve. Homework gives students another opportunity to review the class material. Homework gives parents a chance to see what their child is learning in school. Homework teaches students that they have to do things, even when they don’t want to. Homework teaches students how to take responsibility for their part in the educational process. Homework teaches students how to work independently. Homework teaches students the importance of planning, staying organized and taking action. I won’t argue that these are good things to learn, but there are other ways to learn these items too. For elementary school kids, I think there are more engaging and interesting ways to learn. 2 really powerful people in this arena: Harris Cooper of Duke University – considered the country’s leading homework researcher has published numerous studies around homework. Sara Bennett – Co-author of The Case Against Homework started stophomework.com Was successful in changing rules at her kid’s schools Here are two articles that really help explain the research findings: http://www.healthline.com/health-news/children-more-homework-means-more-stress-031114 http://time.com/4250968/why-parents-should-not-make-kids-do-homework/ Research is suggesting that for elementary school children, homework provides no extra benefit. For middle school, they are suggesting that the benefit is minimal. In fact it’s actually having a negative effect……it’s effecting children’s attitude toward school. It can effect their grades, their self-confidence, social skills, and quality of life causing fatigue and stress. Jason goes on to discuss how driving to success and the constant focus on achievement doesn’t necessarily always result in a positive experience. National Education Association (NEA) and the National PTA (NPTA) support a standard of “10 minutes of homework per grade level per night” and setting a general limit on after-school studying. What can we do to bring change? Here are a few tips from understood.org 1) Talk to the teacher directly 2) Find the right time and way to communicate – in person vs email 3) Communicate clearly – say exactly what the problem is: “After two pages of math problems, my child loses focus. Getting him to finish the whole packet can take two hours.” 4) Be Solution oriented – “Are there alternate ways he can show what he’s learning?” The bottom line is kids need to play more and kids need more sleep.

A Japanese Method to Develop Creativity in Kids

09:17
Japanese people are known for their intelligence, politeness, and wellness. Why is this nation so unique and different from the rest of the world? It seems we’ve found the answer – they have an incredibly cool education system and unique teaching methods! There is a unique method in Japanese schools for developing creativity in kids. We believe that the whole world needs to adopt it! It’s called “Nameless paints.” In this video, we'll tell you how it works. Watch till the end – there is a small but brilliant bonus for you. As you can see, the spots are also different sizes. - In Japanese schools, students don’t take any exams until they reach grade four (the age of 10). The goal for the first three years of school is not to judge the child’s knowledge, but to establish good manners and to develop their character. - While most schools in the world begin their academic year in September or October, in Japan, it is April that marks the start of the academic and business calendar. The first day of school often coincides with one of the most beautiful natural phenomena — the time of cherry blossom. - In Japanese schools, students have to clean the classrooms, cafeterias, and even toilets all by themselves. Most Japanese schools do not employ janitors or custodians. - All classmates eat in their classroom together with the teacher. This helps build positive teacher-student relationships. - To get into a good junior high school, most Japanese students enter a preparatory school or attend private after-school workshops. - Japanese calligraphy, or Shodo, involves dipping a bamboo brush in ink and using it to write hieroglyphs on rice paper. - While some schools have their attire, traditional Japanese school uniform consists of a military style for boys and a sailor outfit for girls. - At the end of high school, Japanese students have to take an exam that determines their future. A student can choose one college they would like to go to, and that college has a particular score requirement. - Having gone through ‘examination hell,’ Japanese students usually take a little break. In this country, college is often considered the best years of a person’s life. Sometimes, Japanese people call this period a ‘vacation’ before work. Why Kids Should Not Have Homework - Dudes To Dads Podcast Episode 77

28:44

That's How You Can Confuse Your Math Teacher

09:13
Bright Side is going to teach you a mathematical trick which requires no special preparation. This trick will confuse your math teacher and impress your friends. You’re going to fall in love with math after this even if you haven't been a fan of it before. TIMESTAMPS The art of Math 0:58 The trick 2:13 The trick explained 5:46 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Albert Einstein said that “Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” In Math, 2 plus 2 always equals 4. Or does it? -Be amazed as you see magic happening in front of you. You’ll see how a number picked at random turns into a number previously saved in a secret folder. -Pick any five-digit number. You take your secret five-digit number and lose the first digit, then add 2 to the last digit. Now ask one of your friends or even your teacher to give you any number. Next, your task is to name a number, which will give 9999 if you add it to the previous number. Then, again, it is your friends’ turn to pick the four digits. Once again, you name the next number. Remember it has to give us 9999 in the end. Now let us put all the numbers together. There you go – we’ve got the number it all started with. Is School Ruining Kids?

08:54
School. We have all been there and done that. It is tough and drags us down. I made a rant video done in the style of an animation video. It talks about the type of people you will meet in high school, the education system and also homework. Join ArchivesNetwork: http://scalelab.com/apply?referral=48519 Cado discord chat: https://discord.gg/xJQf4Zb ^v^v^v^vTWITTER @CadoisFucked https://twitter.com/CadoisFucked^v^v^v^v Here is a bunch of info. Feel free to search through it for my math and what not Mention that the math and sources are in the description Grades 1-5 get 2.9 hours’ homework each week. This is crazy and said to not help kids at all. There are 36 weeks in a school year. This does not include breaks. Which means there would still be a lot more homework not being added into the equation. So, grades 1-5 are said to have on average a 2.9 hour a week. For 36 weeks if we do (36*5)*2.9 we get 522 hours spent per average on grades 1-5 THAT IS INSANE! (36*5)*2.9=522 This totals to being 21.75 days. DAYS with no sleep no breaks. You would spend 21 days and three quarters only doing homework. Within that time, you could go the moon and back 3.5 times. Its is 3 hours to the moon 6 to the moon and back. 21.75/6=3.5 You could learn an instrument or skill within that time. You could drive across America 10 times. Think about the things you could do in 522 hours. And that is only grades 1-5. Grades 6-8 are said to have 3.2 hours a week so if we do (3*36)*3.2 we get 345.6 hours. Add in 522 from 1-5 and we have 867.6 hours. (3*36)*3.2=345.6 (3*36)*3.2=345.6+522=867.6 Or 36.15 days. Now let’s add in high school. High school is 9-12 with an average of 17.5 hours each week. (4*36)*17.5=2,520 2,520+867.6=3,387.5 This alone is 105 days. 105 days or 2520 in high school alone. Add in the other grades and you have 3,387.5 hours spent from 1-12th grade. That is crazy. That is 141.15 days. That is more than four months spent only on homework with no breaks or anything. You could build a house. You could drive across the us 70 times. You could fly to the moon and back 23.5 times. You could do so much in this time. Think about how much you could do. You could travel the world. You could swim across the Atlantic Ocean from Massachusetts to France and almost back. You could fly around the world 72 times. There is an unimaginable amount you can do within that time. 141.15/6=23.5 (moon) 141.15/4=35.2875 (months) House take 3-4 months It takes 73 days to swim across the Atlantic 141.15/73=1.93356164384 3,387.5/48=70.5729166667 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/4562563/US-athlete-Jennifer-Figge-is-first-woman-to-swim-Atlantic-Ocean.html https://www.reference.com/vehicles/long-fly-around-world-6d55978b0ca098b1 https://www.quora.com/How-long-does-it-take-to-drive-across-the-United-States https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2014/02/27/students-spend-more-time-on-homework-but-teachers-say-its-worth-it

Persuasive Speech (Is Homework Necessary?)

07:08
Is Homework Necessary? Name: Brittney Smith Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to believe that homework is necessary. Thesis Statement: Homework is necessary for the benefits of increasing the understanding of the material and to independently apply their learning. I. Introduction A. Attention Material: As students return to school, the debate among teachers and parents gets heated up on whether students should have homework. B. Introduce topic: Is homework necessary? C. Preview main point: Homework is a tool used for students to practice or show what they have learned in class. (Transition: Homework is necessary, here’s why:) II. Body A. Need: Homework is necessary: 1. Improves memory (“Does Homework Improve Academic Achievement, Duke University, https://today.duke.edu/2006/09/homework_oped.html. 23 September 2006. 1 Oct. 2017) 2. Improves student’s ability to independently apply their knowledge 3. Teaches responsibility B. Describe the need: Duke University psychology professor Harris Cooper (2006), says that homework is thought to improve study habits, attitudes toward school, self-discipline, and independent problem solving skill. Students who do homework performed better in school. C. Explain the importance of the need: Homework empowers the students with confidence to succeed in their academic and personal lives. D. “It should be the student’s responsibility to do homework with the parents playing a minor supporting role.” Erika Patall (2017) (Transition: Doing away with homework.) E. Describe what could happen is the need is done away with: What would happen if homework was done away with? 1. Student’s grades would not show improvement 2. Students would lack the study skills needed for further education 3. It would take students longer to obtain the material learning in class a) When working with 2nd grader during afterschool (FBC Academy), I often see students who have homework once a week struggle with the material rather than students who have it every day, are familiar with the material and have less questions. (Transition: How much homework should a student receive) F. Satisfaction: How much homework is needed to provide improvement within a student’s education? G. Cathy Vatterott (2006), an education professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, supports the “10-minute rule”. 10 minutes per grade starting during kindergarten. 1. In elementary school homework is mostly about establishing responsibility. Homework I believe, should be no more than 30 mins. 2. In middle and high school homework takes on the role of being independent and important to academic achievement. Homework I believe should be no more than 60 mins. III. Conclusion A. Signal ending: Homework should reinforce what has been learned in class. B. Restate the importance: Homework is necessary for the benefits of increasing the understanding of the material and to independently apply their learning. C. “Call to Action”: It is okay not to have homework everyday but it is not okay to go without. D. Memorable ending: Students who have homework perform better in the classroom and outside of the classroom. They also perform better on standardized test than students who don’t have homework. “Is homework necessary?” Debate.org, www.debate.org/opinions/is-homework-necessary. 1 Oct. 2017. Helen Silvester. Nature News. Nature Publishing Group, https://npjscilearncommunity.nature.com/users/20207-helen-silvester/posts/15056-is-homework-really-necessary. 16 February 2017. 1 Oct. 2017. Ooops! Mueller Cheated on His Homework

03:40
Ooops! Mueller Cheated on His Homework A large number of people who read the Mueller 13-person Russian Indictment released on Friday noted a transparent lack of actual substance.  Last night the absence of substance turned toward the hilarious. Much like the heavily touted sketchy 2017 Joint Analysis Report (the infamous “14 U.S. intelligence agencies report“) was really only three political intel agencies, FBI (Comey), CIA (Brennan) and ODNI (Clapper), Friday’s Russian indictment had a lot of pages and citations but in the aggregate was an assembly of nothing-burger reporting of various insignificant social media events. ... https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2017/11/11/the-actual-2016-fbi-report-on-russian-hacking-does-not-show-what-media-claim-it-does/ http://thegatewaypundit.com/2018/02/stunning-mueller-patched-together-much-indictment-2015-radio-free-europe-article/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2018/02/18/the-russian-journalist-who-helped-uncover-election-meddling-is-confounded-by-the-mueller-indictments/?utm_term=.e3d8a38af602 https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/02/18/too-funny-special-prosecutor-mueller-patched-together-much-of-his-muh-russia-indictment-from-old-news-articles/#more-146019 ===================================================== Voice-over intro courtesy of http://www.tomcupp.com KEEP THIS CHANNEL ALIVE Support this channel on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Headlines_With_A_Voice One-time support offerings may be sent to the following email address using PayPal: [email protected] NOTE: Alternate sites where you may access my daily narrated news are listed below. At the link above, you’ll find a selection of VICE articles offering mental health support, which we hope will act as guidance, advice and simply a reminder: You are not alone. --- --- --- A message from Study Girl: Dear Friend, Things really seemed to get on top of me and everything started to feel out of control, my future seemed completely hopeless. I felt incredibly low and so alone, enough to consider taking my own life... But I chose to live. And I’m so glad I did. It gave me the chance to talk about my feelings, with people who care. This gave me a whole new perspective, it helped me discover why my life was worth living. Something I couldn’t see when I was feeling low. If you can identify with how I was feeling, the important thing to do is talk. Whatever you’re going through now, There’s always someone there to listen and help you. Things do change and move on. You are not alone. I’ll see you again soon, Study Girl x --- --- --- If you or a friend are experiencing suicidal feelings, please reach out to one of these support lines in your country: Country helplines and information: 🇺🇸 US - Suicide prevention Lifeline | ☎ Tel: 1-800-273-8255 | http://bit.ly/CM-USA-HELP | 🕖 (24/7) 🇰🇷 Counsel24 | ☎ Tel: 1566-2525 | http://bit.ly/CM-SK-HELP | 🕖 (24/7) 🇬🇧 Samaritans | ☎ Tel: 116 123 | http://bit.ly/CM-UK-HELP | 🕖 (24/7) 🇧🇷Centro de Valorização da Vida | ☎ Tel: 188 | http://bit.ly/CM-BRAZIL-HELP | 🕖 (24/7) 🇨🇦 Crisis Services Canada | ☎ Tel: 833-456-4566 | http://bit.ly/CM-CANADA-HELP | 🕖 (24/7) 🇷🇺 Samaritans | ☎ Tel: 8202-577-577 | http://bit.ly/CM-RUSSIA-HELP |🕖(Mon - Sun. 9:00 to 21:00) 🇫🇷 SOS Helpline | ☎ Tel: 01-4621-4646 | http://bit.ly/CM-FRANCE-HELP | 🕖 (Mon-Sun. 15:00 to 23:00) 🇩🇪 TelefonSeelsorge | ☎ Tel: 0800-111-0-111 | http://bit.ly/CM-GERMANY-HELP | 🕖 (24/7) 🇯🇵 Befrienders Japan | ☎ Tel: 03-5286-9090 | http://bit.ly/CM-HELP-JAPAN | 🕖 (Mon to Fri. 10:00 to 17:30) 🇲🇽 Saptel | ☎ Tel: (55) 5259-8121 | http://bit.ly/CM-MEXICO-HELP | 🕖 (24/7) For global helpline directories visit these sites: 🌎 http://bit.ly/CM-WORLDWIDE-HELP 🌏http://bit.ly/CM-IASP --- --- --- continue the conversation on social media using #lofibeatssuicide
