Science at Work: Flood Monitoring

02:23
Natural Resources Canada is the federal centre of expertise for "remote sensing" – the science of using technologies such as satellite imagery and aerial photographs to detect information on objects on earth. Our scientists use remote sensing information for a variety of reasons that you might expect, like map making, environmental monitoring, and assisting with the development of natural resources. But remote sensing can also be a valuable tool in emergency situations, such as a major flood.

TDS LIVE | Voluntary Standards for Sustainable Trade in Natural Resources

01:12:26
The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supported by the commitments made in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA), was adopted in September 2015. Among the set of global priorities, the Agenda includes reform of illegal and unsustainable resource extraction (including illegal fishing, and the poaching and trafficking of protected species) and promotion of sustainable marine and terrestrial resource use. The objectives of this session will be to: Explore the opportunities and challenges for developing countries associated with the role of voluntary private standards in creating demand for sustainably sourced living natural resources (fish, timber, other wildlife, and ecosystem services). Explore how these opportunities and challenges could be addressed, including through hard or soft law, private initiatives, public-private partnerships or Aid for Trade. Consultation on Struggle against Corporate Loot of Natural Resources & Displacement, Ranchi Part: 6

09:03
Human rights law network has organised a Consultation on Struggle against Corporate Loot of Natural Resources & Displacement, in Ranchi on 2nd June 2013. Corruption is the reason for as well as a product of inequality, violence, loot and exploitation. Politics and economics are the means of corruption. It is important to change this now. It is important that along with the country’s manual labourers, peasants, workers, artisans etc. and the oppressed tribals, dalits, etc. sensitive and thoughtful citizens of this country participate in this campaign too. Every committed and responsible citizen should give at least 2 - 4 hours of his/her day or one day a week for development work (education, health, domestic production, service of the underprivileged etc.) The society then also needs to challenge itself. The inspired masses that have stood against corruption need to raise their voice against injustice too and instead of contributing to the destruction of resources and displacement, work towards human development for a beautiful and prosperous country. Understanding the First Nations Principles of OCAP™: Our Road Map to Information Governance

06:22
First Nation peoples have always understood the need to protect our natural resources, and increasingly one of our most important resources today is information. Information is about more than numbers and surveys: it's also about identity, heritage, and the right to self-determination. That's why the First Nations Information Governance Center (FNIGC) was created nearly 20 years ago. FNIGC's mission is to uphold the First Nations principles of OCAP™ a set of guidelines that ensure First Nations people are the stewards of their own information -- and that they have the power to own, protect and control how their information is used. This six-minute video explains FNIGC's mission, provides an overview of its work and explores the importance of OCAP™ for First Nations people and communities. The NLRC will bring together data from fundamental research (from within Landcare Research and from other science providers) as well as data from a number of government and industry stakeholders. Once these authoritative sources of information have been established (in both electronic and hard copy), eResearch innovations will be used to provide easy access across a range of scales to assist organisations in reporting on the state of the environment, planning development within environmental limits, and ultimately matching land use to the capacity of land resources.

Secrets Of Earth : Hindi Documentary

41:14
Secrets Of Earth : Hindi Documentary Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only object in the Universe known to harbor life. According to radiometric dating and other sources of evidence, Earth formed over 4 billion years ago.[24][25][26] Earth's gravity interacts with other objects in space, especially the Sun and the Moon, Earth's only natural satellite. Earth revolves around the Sun in 365.26 days, a period known as an Earth year. During this time, Earth rotates about its axis about 366.26 times.[n 5] Earth's axis of rotation is tilted, producing seasonal variations on the planet's surface.[27] The gravitational interaction between the Earth and Moon causes ocean tides, stabilizes the Earth's orientation on its axis, and gradually slows its rotation.[28] Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System and the largest of the four terrestrial planets. Earth's lithosphere is divided into several rigid tectonic plates that migrate across the surface over periods of many millions of years. About 71% of Earth's surface is covered with water, mostly by oceans.[29] The remaining 29% is land consisting of continents and islands that together have many lakes, rivers and other sources of water that contribute to the hydrosphere. The majority of Earth's polar regions are covered in ice, including the Antarctic ice sheet and the sea ice of the Arctic ice pack. Earth's interior remains active with a solid iron inner core, a liquid outer core that generates the Earth's magnetic field, and a convecting mantle that drives plate tectonics. Within the first billion years of Earth's history, life appeared in the oceans and began to affect the Earth's atmosphere and surface, leading to the proliferation of aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Some geological evidence indicates that life may have arisen as much as 4.1 billion years ago. Since then, the combination of Earth's distance from the Sun, physical properties, and geological history have allowed life to evolve and thrive.[30][31] In the history of the Earth, biodiversity has gone through long periods of expansion, occasionally punctuated by mass extinction events. Over 99% of all species[32] that ever lived on Earth are extinct.[33][34] Estimates of the number of species on Earth today vary widely;[35][36][37] most species have not been described.[38] Over 7.4 billion humans live on Earth and depend on its biosphere and natural resources for their survival. Humans have developed diverse societies and cultures; politically, the world has about 200 sovereign states. I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor)

Discovery 13: Mining Innovation Panel

01:37:34
Hardrock mining in Canada entails formidable challenges, but overcoming them through innovation would produce high-grade rewards. The high cost and availability of energy, geotechnical risk and stability, materials handling for both ore and backfill, and productivity levels in underground mines are all issues that are only exacerbated by remote locations far removed from established power and transportation infrastructure and excavation depths of up to 2.5 km. This Discovery 13 panel explores the potential for innovative solutions in Ontario that can open up global markets at a time when the demand for metals worldwide continues to escalate. Moderator -- Douglas Morrison, President and CEO, Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) Panellists: Dr. Dean Millar, MIRARCO Research Chair and Director, Energy, Renewables and Carbon Management (ERCM); Professor of Energy in Mining, Laurentian University Dick DeStefano, Executive Director, Sudbury Area Mining Supply and Service Association (SAMSSA) Dr. Daniel Campbell, Director, Environmental Monitoring and Rehabilitation Group, MIRARCO; Assistant Professor, Laurentian University Richard Fink, Vice President, Technical, Global Ferroallays, Cliffs Natural Resources For more information about Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), visit www.oce-ontario.org.
