Continental Resources' New Shale Play in Oklahoma

03:28
Nov.29 -- The IEA has said that if OPEC cuts production in the U.S., shale producers will race to put rigs to work and flood the market with more oil. A lot of that oil will come from the well-known Permian Basin in Texas, but some of it will also come from SCOOP and STACK in Oklahoma, fast becoming one of the hottest shale areas in the country. Continental Resources moved quickly to pick up acreage in SCOOP and STACK, and Bloomberg's Alix Steel went to visit the play to see what made it so special.

► Ice Race - Border Conflicts about OIL (FULL DOCUMENTARY)

49:00
The Arctic is an area with massive reserves that are extremely important for billions of people – but with unclear borderlines. History has shown us that this is an extremely dangerous situation. “Border Conflict” explains that the borders in the Arctic are disputed and have not been finally determined despite the fact that they have been defined in accordance with international criteria. Zoia Vylka Ravna is a member of the indigenous Nenets people, but she has lived away from the Russian tundra for a long time. She is now returning to her homeland in the far north of Russia where she becomes witness to the fact that her people’s traditional grazing grounds have been invaded by a new industry. Like the members of many other indigenous groups around the Polar basin she feels as though she has been robbed and forgotten. Will the countries in the north comply with international regulations while a desperate hunt for energy resource is taking place? Will it be possible to share this area without any military conflicts arising – and will the exploitation of natural resources be able to occur peacefully? In the final episode of the series “Ice Race” we stand at an important and dangerous crossroads in our search for more oil and gas. Because even though we are starting to use new sources of energy, the world will be dependent on petroleum activities for many decades to come. Despite numerous expeditions, our knowledge about the seas around the North Pole is still almost non-existent. The sovereigny of the countries around the polar basin only extends for 200 nautical miles. The remaining polar areas are administered by the UN. The race to find oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean has meant that it is therefore even more important for the five Arctic countries, i.e. USA, Russia, Canada, Norway and Denmark, to secure more of the polar basin. All these countries are therefore fighting intensely over what are sometimes overlapping border claims. These claims extend all the way to the outer limits of the continental shelf, i.e. the shallow waters off these countries’ coasts. If the new race culminates in predatory activities and major conflict, the indigenous populations could become the first and greatest loosers!

Continental Resources Eco-Pad Investor Relations

03:48
ECO-Pad® is a drilling technique whereby Continental drills four wells from a single drilling pad. The approach allows us to develop two separate formations on two separate spacing units simultaneously, increasing production efficiency. It also allows us to harvest more of a reservoir’s resources while reducing environmental impact on the surface of the land. We completed our first ECO-Pad project in 2010 in Dunn County, North Dakota from the Three Forks and Middle Bakken formations of the North Dakota Bakken. The ECO-Pad technique provides an estimated 10% cost savings on the drilling and completion of each well.

Brazil in Regional and Global History

02:03:17
Brazil Institute For almost 200 years - since Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822 -- many Brazilian politicians and intellectuals, and many foreign observers, have believed that Brazil had the potential to become a great nation and a positive force in international affairs - largely because of its continental size and natural resources, but also because of its people, its society and culture, the absence of significant linguistic, religious, racial, ethnic or regional domestic conflict and (since the Paraguayan War in 1870) Brazil's peaceful relations with its neighbors. During the Empire (1822-89), the First Republic (1889-1930), the Vargas era (1930-45) and even the post World War II/Cold War period (both under democracy, 1945-64 and under military dictatorship, 1964-85) Brazil was, however, largely inward-looking, primarily concerned with its own political and economic development and defining its national identity. As result, Brazil was relatively peripheral in both regional (whether Brazil's region is defined as the Western Hemisphere, including the United States, or Latin America, or South America) and global affairs. (In-between) Law of the Sea, Energy Law & Water Law

11:44
Continental Shelf Aquifers in International Law: (In-between) Law of the Sea, Energy Law and Water Law By Marguerite de Chaisemartin In December 2013, scientists revealed the presence of major fresh/brackish water reserves in the continental shelves of the world. These reserves according to the study could amount to a hundred times the volume of water extracted from the Earth’s subsurface since 1900. Such phenomenal information has considerable impact, considering the looming “global water crisis” the world is facing and on a scientific level. It also raises the major issue of the legal regimes applicable to this natural resource of the seabed, its exploration, management, and use as a source of freshwater for the world’s growing population. While the presence of freshwater in the seabed has been the study of marine hydrogeology for decades, its exploitation as a natural resource of the continental shelf has never been at stake during treaty negotiations and remains out of the scope of public international law instruments. This legal loophole and the identification of the legal regime potentially applying to their exploration, exploitation and preservation need to be addressed and is discussed in this paper.

Continental Day of Action Against Canadian Mega Resource Extraction August 1, 2012

08:01
Civil society along with communities from Canada to Argentina conducted coordinated actions including rallies, demonstrations, community radio coverage, letter writing campaigns and other alternative and imaginative actions of protest in front of mining corporate offices and Canadian embassies across the Americas. WHY CANADA? • 60% of the world's publicly traded mining companies are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. These corporations account for over 3200 exploitation projects in over 100 countries. Canada is the largest stakeholder in the resource extraction industry in the Americas accounting for 37% of the total investment. • Canadian financial markets in Toronto and Vancouver are the world's largest source of equity capital for mining companies undertaking exploration and development. • Canadian-based mining operations have deeply impacted territories, communities, and life. Resource exploration and exploitation activities have caused displacement, widespread destruction of livelihoods (compromising water and food security), caused long- term health issues , disregarded sacred indigenous territories and rights, exacerbated human rights violations especially in contexts of internal conflict, and contributed to the criminalization of artisanal miners, union and environmental activists and community activists. Large-scale mining explorations and exploitations have also led to an irreversible loss in biodiversity. • Despite the fact that large-scale mining is usually presented as a driving force of sustainable development by mining companies, governments throughout the Americas, and international institutions such as the World Bank, the long-term negative impacts on peoples and territories contrast with the vague promises of jobs, and national economic growth and development. OUR DEMANDS: Divestment: The Canadian government should divest public funds from resource extraction industries. (i.e pension funds invested in GoldCorp and other corporations) and call for public funds to be invested in social programs like free education, affordable housing and universal healthcare . Regulation: The Canadian government should enable legislation that establishes corporate accountability standards for Canadian corporations operating abroad. This legislation should penalize corporations linked to human rights violations and should allow foreign nationals to pursue legal action for damages in Canadian courts (Bills C-300 and C-323). Stop Complicity: Stop utilizing public institutions to assist with high profile public relations campaigns conducted by resource extraction companies (such as the Museum of Natural History in Ottawa, Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, York University, CIDA-funded projects such as the Devonshire initiative. Binding Community Consent Mechanisms: That governments and courts of the region respect and adhere to the internationally recognized right of free prior and informed consent for Indigenous communities. People Before Profit: End free trade agreements and bilateral investment treaties that enshrine the right of corporations over citizens and communities.

Ceremonial launch of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), October 2018

03:20
Sustainable natural rubber is a Tire Industry Project priority. Natural rubber is a crucial element of tire production (which uses around 70% of all natural rubber) and one reason WBCSD Tire Industry Project (TIP) members want to ensure the sustainable production and supply of natural rubber. This means looking after the people, communities and natural resources touched by natural rubber production and supply, who all stand to benefit from the creation and adoption of sustainable practices and businesses. The WBCSD’s TIP initiated development of the Global Platform for sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR). The GPSNR is an independent platform comprised of natural rubber value-chain stakeholders – it aims to lead improvements in the socio-economic and environmental performance of the natural rubber value chain. Nigeria to sign agreement of the Africa Continental Free trade Area

03:21
Nigeria will sign the agreement for the establishment of the Africa Continental Free trade Area by the end of this month when African Heads of State meet in Mauritania for the African Union Summit, former President Olesugun Obasanjo said on Thursday. Nigeria did not sign the agreement in March and President Muhammadu Buhari set up a committee to study the agreement, following warnings by various stekeholders in Nigeria that the agreement would lead to the dumping of finished goods in the country. Meanwhile, the Africa Export Import Bank (AfreximBank) will in December hold an African Trade Fair in Egypt in December to encourage trade among African countries. Sarah KImani reports from Cairo.
