Caroline Halford, Adis Publishing Manager, explains how a judicious approach to presubmission enquiries and discussions with journal editors can aid successful article submissions. Recorded 4 January 2017 at a MedComms Networking event in Oxford. Produced by NetworkPharma.tv = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = ABSTRACT: Journal editors are always looking to publish good manuscripts – ‘good’ meaning citations and downloads, which in turn drive up the journal impact factor and improve its profile. Agencies and publications planners who adopt a constructive approach to presubmission enquiries can enlist valuable help from journal editors in overcoming the challenges to publication. From a journal editor’s point of view, good manuscripts will fit the scope of the journal, not replicate recently published content in the journal or the wider field, be of interest to the readership, e.g. describing research that may affect future research or treatment; have novel findings – or be reviews of an area that has not been covered recently, have robust methodology, be fair and balanced, and use clear, concise language. Papers can be rejected outright for a variety of reasons related to the above, which will not be explained in a standard rejection letter. Common reasons for rejection after peer review include methodological flaws (in the case of original research), significant data omissions (in the case of reviews), overstating the conclusions, and plagiarism. Some of these issues can be successfully addressed by means of a thoughtful presubmission enquiry and maybe a conversation with the editor. Provide as much information as possible in the presubmission enquiry; be transparent about the history of the article; and address the previous journal’s comments (the pool of peer reviewers is very small!) or provide detail in the covering letter as to why this has not been done. Nowadays, many journals have cascading titles and may be able to find a good home for the work, even if this is not your first-choice journal. Are we all screwed? Well some of us definitely are. Twitter: https://twitter.com/arachnomutalisk ___ Addendum 1: this is slightly incorrect. 2795 Gt CO2 figure is the current declared reserves of fossil fuels that companies are planning to dig up. The real projected amount of all CO2 underground is much higher since new oil and gas fields are still being discovered. Addendum 2: As pointed out by Kevin Anderson himself, “emissions reductions of 3-4% is incompatible with growing economy” is more of an assertion rather than empirical fact. However, there has been other studies that supports the idea that limiting global warming to under 2° C requires significant consumption reduction (Raftery et al 2017 , Ward et al 2016 ) and consumption reduction means slow to no economic growth. Capturing CO2 and injecting it in the subsurface is often presented as a major tool to prevent man-made global warming. Several successful pilot projects on carbon sequestration have been carried. In order to assess the degree to which this technique can have an impact on mitigation of man-made global warming, one needs to consider the amount of CO2 that needs to be injected. This leads to a number of questions that must be answered before this carbon capture and sequestration can be used on a scale that actually makes a difference in preventing climate change. (1) How can the cost of this process be reduced from its projected cost of 150 billion dollars per year? (2) How can the capture and injection be up-scaled by a factor of 1000 beyond current capabilities? (3) How can we predict and monitor leakage? Many action alternative to carbon capture and sequestration likely to be much cheaper and save energy as well. This talk was presented on April 10, 2013 as part of the IHS Markit Seminar Series, co-sponsored with the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. "Measuring Scholarly Impact: The Influence of 'Altmetrics' on a Changing Conversation" is part of the Research Without Borders speaker series at Columbia University. "Altmetrics" refers to methods of measuring scholarly impact using Web-based social media. Why does it matter? In many academic fields, attaining scholarly prestige means publishing research articles in important scholarly journals. However, many in the academic community consider a journal's prestige, which is determined by a metric calculated using the number of citations to the journal, to be a poor proxy for the quality of the individual author's work. At the same time, hiring and promotion committees are looking for ways to determine the impact of alternate formats now commonly used by researchers such as blogs, data sets, videos, and social media. The panelists all work with innovative new tools for assessing scholarly impact: Jason Priem, Co-Founder, ImpactStory Kristi Holmes, Bioinformaticist, Bernard Becker Medical Library, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine Caitlin Aptowicz Trasande, Head of Science Metrics, Digital Science Visit the Scholarly Communication Program website for information on past and upcoming Research Without Borders events: http://scholcomm.columbia.edu/ Date: November 13, 2012 Sponsors: Scholarly Communication Program

PRESENTER: Keith Baggerly, Professor, Bioinformatics & Comp Biology Modern high-throughput biological assays let us ask detailed questions about how diseases operate, and promise to let us personalize therapy. Careful data processing is essential, because our intuition about what the answers “should” look like is very poor when we have to juggle thousands of things at once. When documentation of such processing is absent, or some data are missing, we must apply “forensic bioinformatics” to work from what data we have and the reported results to infer what the methods must have been. We will present several case studies where simple errors may have put patients at risk. This work has been covered in both the scientific and lay press, prompted several journals to revisit the types of information that must accompany publications, and led to an Institute of Medicine (IOM) review of the type of data that must be supplied before “omics”-based tests are used to guide patient care. We discuss steps we take to avoid such errors, other lessons that can be applied to large data sets, and issues associated with data sharing.

What is WEBOMETRICS? What does WEBOMETRICS mean? WEBOMETRICS meaning - WEBOMETRICS pronunciation - WEBOMETRICS definition - WEBOMETRICS explanation - How to pronounce WEBOMETRICS? ource: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ The science of webometrics (also cybermetrics) tries to measure the World Wide Web to get knowledge about the number and types of hyperlinks, structure of the World Wide Web and usage patterns. According to Björneborn and Ingwersen (2004), the definition of webometrics is "the study of the quantitative aspects of the construction and use of information resources, structures and technologies on the Web drawing on bibliometric and informetric approaches." The term webometrics was first coined by Almind and Ingwersen (1997). A second definition of webometrics has also been introduced, "the study of web-based content with primarily quantitative methods for social science research goals using techniques that are not specific to one field of study" (Thelwall, 2009), which emphasizes the development of applied methods for use in the wider social sciences. The purpose of this alternative definition was to help publicize appropriate methods outside of the information science discipline rather than to replace the original definition within information science. Similar scientific fields are Bibliometrics, Informetrics, Scientometrics, Virtual ethnography, and Web mining. One relatively straightforward measure is the "Web Impact Factor" (WIF) introduced by Ingwersen (1998). The WIF measure may be defined as the number of web pages in a web site receiving links from other web sites, divided by the number of web pages published in the site that are accessible to the crawler. However the use of WIF has been disregarded due to the mathematical artifacts derived from power law distributions of these variables. Other similar indicators using size of the institution instead of number of webpages have been proved more useful.

Virginia Eubanks speaks about her most recent book Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor. Eubanks systematically shows the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive risk models on poor and working-class people in America. The book is full of heart-wrenching and eye-opening stories, from a woman in Indiana whose benefits are literally cut off as she lays dying to a family in Pennsylvania in daily fear of losing their daughter because they fit a certain statistical profile. The U.S. has always used its most cutting-edge science and technology to contain, investigate, discipline and punish the destitute. Like the county poorhouse and scientific charity before them, digital tracking and automated decision-making hide poverty from the middle-class public and give the nation the ethical distance it needs to make inhuman choices: which families get food and which starve, who has housing and who remains homeless, and which families are broken up by the state. In the process, they weaken democracy and betray our most cherished national values. Virginia Eubanks is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University at Albany, SUNY. In addition to her latest book, Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor, she is the author of Digital Dead End: Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age and co-editor, with Alethia Jones, of Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: Forty Years of Movement Building with Barbara Smith. For two decades, Eubanks has worked in community technology and economic justice movements. Today, she is a founding member of the Our Data Bodies Project and a Fellow at New America. Joining her to discuss data-based discrimination are powerhouses Alondra Nelson and Julia Angwin. Alondra Nelson is president of the Social Science Research Council and professor of sociology at Columbia University. A scholar of science, technology, and social inequality, she is the author most recently of The Social Life of DNA: Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation after the Genome. Her publications also include Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight against Medical Discrimination; Genetics and the Unsettled Past: The Collision of DNA, Race, and History; and Technicolor: Race, Technology, and Everyday Life. Julia Angwin is an award-winning investigative journalist at the independent news organization ProPublica. From 2000 to 2013, she was a reporter at The Wall Street Journal, where she led a privacy investigative team that was a Finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Reporting in 2011 and won a Gerald Loeb Award in 2010. Her book, Dragnet Nation: A Quest for Privacy, Security and Freedom in a World of Relentless Surveillance, was published by Times Books in 2014. In 2003, she was on a team of reporters at The Wall Street Journal that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Reporting for coverage of corporate corruption. She is also the author of “Stealing MySpace: The Battle to Control the Most Popular Website in America” (Random House, March 2009).
