Real English Vocabulary: At the BANK

08:41
This is a practical vocabulary lesson about words we use at the bank. Banking has a set of specialized vocabulary, and you may be nervous to go to the bank in an English-speaking country. But knowing some useful words will make it easy and pleasant for you. In this lesson, I will teach you the meaning of "bank teller", "PIN", "investments", "account", "deposit", "withdraw", and many more terms associated with going to the bank. If you want to feel more confident when going to the bank and speaking in English, watch this lesson and complete the quiz. After that, you'll be in business! http://www.engvid.com/real-english-vocabulary-at-the-bank/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on "Bank Vocabulary". Today, we're going to talk about going to the bank, and the different things you can do, and the different verbs associated and nouns associated with this very common experience. So, first, when you enter the bank, you have to "get in line" or "get in the queue". Now, specifically, in the United States, even in Canada, we use the word "line" when you're waiting to see someone at the bank. If you are in other parts of the world, specifically England, you can also call a line a "queue", so you get in the queue or get in line. Next, once it's your turn to, you know, do your business at the bank, you see a "bank teller". So, the name of the person who helps you at the bank is the teller. And after you see the bank teller, if you already have an account with the bank, you have to use your bank card and put in your "PIN". Your "PIN" is your personal identification number, your code, your password. Right? Now, once this is done, you're ready, the bank teller can see your account. Or maybe it's your first time and you didn't put in a PIN, there are different things you can do and ask for when you're at the bank. Number one, you can say: "Hi. I'd like to open an account", or "close an account". Now, again the two most common types of accounts at a bank are a checking account and a savings account. So your checking is your everyday spending. This is what you use your debit card for. Right? So, I'm just going to put "debit card" here. Your debit card is your bank card, and this is what you use to make payments when you go out to restaurants, movie theaters, etc. Okay, you can also transfer money when you are at the bank. So if you'd like to move some money from your checking account, for example, to one of your other accounts, such as a savings account or maybe a joint account that you have with your partner, husband, wife, etc., you can ask to do that. You can say: "Hi. I'd like to transfer $200 from my checking account to my savings account." And again, this is if you don't do online banking, which solves a lot of these issues. Now, instead of transferring money, you can also "deposit" money or "make a deposit". This means you are putting money into your accounts. So if you, you know, receive a check from the government, for example, or maybe your workplace still gives checks (it still happens, it does), you can deposit that check. And "deposit it" means put that money into your account. You can "withdraw". Now, "to withdraw" is to take out money. So, these two are really the most common verbs when you're talking about exchanging money with the bank, whether you're in the bank or at an ATM machine. So you deposit, which means you put money in; withdraw means you take money out. So you can withdraw or take out money. And the term we can also use is you can make a "withdrawal". And you'll see the "al" here, this means that, again, this is a noun in this case. The verb, there's no "al" at the end; it's just "withdraw". Withdraw money. You can "pay a bill". So, again, bills are our favourite things in the world, like pay for your electricity at your house, or your television, internet, etc. Now, again, this doesn't only have to be for those common things, because most people today, you have an automatic withdraw happens when you pay for a bill. But again, sometimes you get something where you have to go to the bank to pay the bill. If you get something from the Ministry of Transportation or something from the government, and it's unclear what you have to do to pay something online, you can go to the bank and you can pay that bill. Also, you can "exchange currency". So if you are travelling somewhere and you only have money from your country, you can change that money. And again, the name for "money" in this case is "currency", like the dollar is one type of currency, the yen is another type of currency. And you can ask the bank: "What's your rate?" because different places, exchange offices, banks, will have different rates for your currency. So, for example, the bank might say, if I'm travelling from Canada to the United States, they might say: "95 cents per dollar." Okay? So for every dollar that I have Canadian, I receive 95 cents American.

How I Trade on the Stock Market

11:29
**Read description for answers to frequently asked questions** the first stock market video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwd3C2Cq9H0 As I say many times in the video, this is simply the way that I personally trade. That does not mean that it is for everyone. There are countless different approaches that one could have to the stock market, and none of them are strictly right or wrong. Don't ever follow exactly what any one person tells you when it comes to the stock market - including me! Do your research and come to your own conclusions. QUESTIONS Q. Do you day trade? A. Essentially, no. I rarely day trade. I think that since I have started trading, I have only done 2 or 3 day trades. Q. Your chart assumes that you can identify highs and lows - how is that possible? A. It's not. My chart was a very basic version of the way in which I trade - very basic. If I could re-film the video, I would put more emphasis on identifying highs and lows - the emphasis being that you can never 100% identify them. If you trade, as I showed later in my chart, sometimes you will sell and the stock will skyrocket. Or, quite often, you will buy and the stock will plummet. It happens, and of course I experience this all the time. Q. How long do you hold stocks? A. This varies greatly, and can be anywhere from 1 day to months. On average, I probably hold stocks approximately 3 days - 1 week. Q. So, you are making this video to advise people to start trading? A. No. Absolutely not. I would be more likely to encourage people NOT to trade on the stock market than I would be to do vice versa. Q. So, you trade off your base of $10k, and live off of that? A. No. $10k is what I started with in my account two years ago. It is not what is in my account now. Q. Can you give me advice on...? A. No. Although I would love to help everyone, I am not the best means of advice for you. I am not trying to give anyone advice here - I am simply sharing a bit of insight into what my job as a stock trader looks like. I am not a licensed financial advisor, and I would not ever presume to give anyone financial advice. Please do your research and be careful! Q. You don't seem like a professional trader...? A. I am not really concerned with how professional I "seem." I am making a living, and that is the most important thing to me. I did not go to school for this, or ever take any classes on the stock market. I did my own research and taught myself all that I know about the market. I am not worried about seeming professional - I am only concerned about making money on the stock market. Q. Can you give us proof / screenshot your personal account info / banking info so that I believe you? A. No. If you do not "believe me," please don't expect me to care. Q. I want to make some quick cash. Should I invest in the stock market? A. No. Absolutely not. Q. Can you film yourself actually trading on the market? A. No - for various reasons. One, if you are imagining that my actual trading will be anywhere near as engaging as that not-very-exciting chart, you are mistaken. Perhaps if I was day trading, this would not be the case, but when I buy a stock, I simply click a button the says "buy." That's it... And then I wait for days, weeks, perhaps months. There is nothing thrilling to see here. Also, it would be a bother to block out all of my account numbers and all that. Sorry. SOCIALS Instagram - travellight21 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/travellight21/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Travellight_ http://travellight.me Why do I trade on TD Ameritrade? - They have strong research reports - They have great trading tools, such as Thinkorswim - They have a great mobile app that allows me to trade on the go - They have amazing customer service - There are no hidden fees, such as maintaining a minimum balance I explained this in the original cut of my video, but it was just getting too long! **And no, I am not sponsored in any way by TD Ameritrade, I just like their trading platform and wanted to give you guys an explanation of why that is. A lot of people also highly recommend Scottrade, which has lower fees than Ameritrade. Whatever works for you!** DISCLAIMER This video is for entertainment purposes only. Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank

07:03
The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is seeking to make its mark in the global development finance arena. Some have voiced concerns over the notion that the bank could have a negative impact on “good governance,” and this is among the reasons the US has opposed the idea. But is that the best posture for Washington to assume? And what impact will the AIIB have in the realm of soft power? Kissinger Institute Director, Robert Daly, addresses these and other questions in this edition of Wilson Center NOW. Robert Daly is director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Wilson Center. He came to the Center from the University of Maryland, and prior to that was American Director of the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies. He began work in U.S.-China relations as a diplomat, serving as Cultural Exchanges Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing in the late 80s and early 90s. After leaving the Foreign Service, he taught Chinese at Cornell University, worked on television and theater projects in China, where he was the first American to have major Chinese-language stage and screen roles, and helped produce Chinese-language versions of Sesame Street and other Children’s Television Workshop programs. During the same period, he directed the Syracuse University China Seminar and served as a commentator on Chinese affairs for CNN, the Voice of America, and Chinese television and radio stations. He lived in China for 11 years and has interpreted for Chinese leaders, including Jiang Zemin and Li Yuanchao, and American leaders, including Jimmy Carter and Henry Kissinger.

Investment Banking Operations: Financial Derivatives and Options Trading - Career (1998)

02:02:49
Investment banking has changed over the years, beginning as a partnership form focused on underwriting security issuance (initial public offerings and secondary offerings), brokerage, and mergers and acquisitions, and evolving into a "full-service" range including sell-side research, proprietary trading, and investment management. In the modern 21st century, the SEC filings of the major independent investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley reflect three product segments: (1) investment banking (fees for M&A advisory services and securities underwriting); (2) asset management (fees for sponsored investment funds), and (3) trading and principal investments (broker-dealer activities including proprietary trading ("dealer" transactions) and brokerage trading ("broker" transactions)).[3] In the United States, commercial banking and investment banking were separated by the Glass--Steagall Act, which was repealed in 1999. The repeal led to more "universal banks" offering an even greater range of services. Many large commercial banks have therefore developed investment banking divisions through acquisitions and hiring. Notable large banks with significant investment banks include JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, and Wells Fargo. After the financial crisis of 2007--2008 and the subsequent passage of the Dodd--Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, regulations have limited certain investment banking operations, notably with the Volcker Rule's restrictions on proprietary trading.[2] The traditional service of underwriting security issues has declined as a percentage of revenue. As far back as 1960, 70% of Merrill Lynch's revenue was derived from transaction commissions while "traditional investment banking" services accounted for 5%. However, Merrill Lynch was a relatively "retail-focused" firm with a large brokerage network. Corporate finance is the traditional aspect of investment banks which also involves helping customers raise funds in capital markets and giving advice on mergers and acquisitions (M&A). This may involve subscribing investors to a security issuance, coordinating with bidders, or negotiating with a merger target. Another term for the investment banking division is corporate finance, and its advisory group is often termed "mergers and acquisitions". A pitch book of financial information is generated to market the bank to a potential M&A client; if the pitch is successful, the bank arranges the deal for the client. The investment banking division (IBD) is generally divided into industry coverage and product coverage groups. Top 3 Reasons to NOT buy a McDonald's Franchise

08:43
Taken from their 2017 franchise disclosure documents the total investment required to buy a McDonald's franchise is $1,008.000 to $2,214,080. A lot of people see that the franchise fee for a McDonald's is only $45,000 and assume that is all you need but that is absolutely not the case. You will need a minimum of $750,000 in liquid capital, that's cash, in order to qualify. You are also required to have a very strong background in business, preferably in a managerial or supervisory capacity as you typically will be managing 50-125 employees. If you think McDonald's is a "sit back while your franchise makes money" type of business think again - taken from their website McDonald's requires you to actively participate in the business and will not sell to investors, investor groups or corporations. After buying your store your ongoing fees for your McDonald's will include a Service fee equal to 4% of Gross sales due on the 10th day of each month. Advertising and promotion is not less than 4% and will vary depending if you are involved in local co-ops. There are other small fees such as licensing and software, and of course your major expenses of rent and staffing. Your monthly base rent will vary depending on the total amount invested by McDonald's in the acquisition and development of the building and land. So how much does a McDonald's store earn? That amount will vary but this chart taken from Bloomberg, sourced from Janney capital markets gives a nice snapshot of a McDonald's financial scenario. Now these figures are from a few years ago, we know that today from looking at the QSR50 the revenues have actually dropped by about $150,000 since this chart was made, so they are likely even lower today than back in 2012. lets take a look. We have net sales of 2.7 million in 2012 which appear to have dropped to 2.55 million in 2017. Still pretty decent money right? Subtract your food and paper costs leaves you with about $1.7 million. Pretty solid so far! But hold on there are many more expenses related to running your McDonald's. Once you back out payroll, taxes, advertising, maintenance, utilities and operating supplies you get down to $761,000. Still not bad right! But hold on you forgot rent, insurance, and other expenses which bring you down to just over $150,000. Now given the fact most executives can earn $150,000 at a job, not having to invest 1.5 million or worry about running a business with dozens of employees, this begs the question of how great of an investment owning a McDonald's actually is. Now don't get me wrong investors that got in early and have prime locations will do far in excess of those numbers. But it's tough to find a great location anymore with so many stores. Always remember the emerging brands of today are the McDonald's of tomorrow. As we always say it is critical to get in at the right part of the growth curve not at the tail end, which is where most investors do get in because they see all these locations and think that must mean success. Not the case. McDonald's has also had it's share of challenges financially as a corporation and you can see here taken from their franchise disclosure documents they have closed hundreds of US based stores and hundreds more in other countries over the past 3 years. Additionally recent surveys of McDonald's franchisees indicate many are unhappy with how the company is being run. "The system is broken," one franchisee said in the survey comments collected by analyst Mark Kalinowski. "There is no leadership, no plan, no respect for operators or their investment bottom line." Another said, "Relations between McDonald's corporations and operators are the worst I have even seen." Not one franchisee surveyed said the six-month outlook was "excellent." So is a McDonald's franchise a good investment? The trends would indicate that the opportunity is nowhere near their peak in the 80's and 90's and it would be prudent to look at several other franchise options before buying a McDonald's just for sake of comparison. Little bit of McDonald's history, McDonald's was started in 1940 by Richard and Maurice McDonald who opened their store in San Bernadino CA. At the time no bank would lend them money, until Bank of America finally extended a loan of $5,000 which started the empire you see today. It wasn't until 1962 the Golden Arches as we know them today came into use, prior to that the McDonald's mascot was a hat wearing hamburger called Speedee! https://www.mcdonalds.com/ca/en-ca/about-us/franchising/purchase-franchise.html https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2015-mcdonalds-franchises/ http://www.Franchise.city https://www.qsrmagazine.com/content/qsr50-2017-top-50-chart

Operational Risk Management in Financial Services

08:30
Operational risk can have a crippling effect on a company if not managed properly. This is especially true in the financial services industry. Banks and investment firms must pay close attention to variables that have the potential to impact their operations, not only from the breakdown of technology and processes, but also from a personnel perspective. The responsibility of managing one's money is great, and the inability to properly anticipate and manage potential risk factors can have a devastating effect, all the way up to the industry level. A case in point was the subprime mortgage crisis of the late 2000s, which led to a nationwide economic recession. Mike Pinedo, the Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management at New York University's Stern School of Business, is an expert in risk management research, particularly in the context of the financial services industry. In his presentation at The Boeing Center's 13th annual Meir Rosenblatt Memorial Lecture, he described the main types of primary risks in a financial services company: market risk, credit risk, and operational risk. Ops risk, which is the risk of a loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people, or external events, may be the most important factor, he claimed. Private Sector vs. Public Sector

Politicians in the media often talk about the private and public sectors of our economy but what's the difference? And which one is more effective? The private sector is made up of businesses or corporations owned by people. The private sector includes malls, grocery stores, and your local diner. To make a profit in the private sector, businesses must earn our money by offering us products and services that we want or need. When businesses have to compete for the same dollars, prices go down because no one wants to pay twice as much for shoes at one store if you can get the same pair cheaper at another place. On the other hand, the public sector is not supported by profits. It doesn't have to compete for our dollars. Instead, the public sector uses our tax dollars to fund its services. So we pay for these programs no matter how much or how little we use them. The government decides how our tax dollars should be spent in the public sector. This makes sense for some things. For example, you probably wouldn't want firefighters or police officers competing with one another for your business. In other cases though, this means things cost more or service is worse. The U.S. Post Office has $100 billion in debt and is regularly bailed out with taxpayer money. And the Department of Motor Vehicles isn't usually known for fast, friendly service. In contrast, private companies know that if they offer poor customer service and don't make money, they'll go out of business. When comparing the private sector with the public sector, it's clear that the market-driven private sector is more efficient. When you don't have to be profitable or accountable, things tend to be more expensive and the service is worse. So when there's a choice between a private sector or a government service, think about that package you really need delivered.

How to do a Video Interview | Intro to HireVue

02:23
Video interviews can be daunting, but don't worry! We've compiled 10 tips to help you have a better video interview with HireVue. Good Luck! TRANSCRIPT Hi, and welcome to an introduction of HireVue. I’m Matt and I’m here to give you a few pointers today. First of all, we do realize that a video interview may not be the most comfortable thing for some of you. But using video interviews as a part of our application process has allowed us to consider a lot more applicant for each position. Next, you’ll need a laptop or a desktop with a camera. We know that if can be difficult to act like yourself in front of the camera so don’t worry we’re not evaluating your stage presence, although, a little personality can go a long way. *music*I work real hard and I’m smart too*music* Maybe I should emphasize - a little personality goes a long way. But make yourself at home, get comfortable, shouldn’t be too hard because most likely you’re at home already. And please don’t feel like you have to make eye contact with the camera the entire time. I know that you’re supposed to make eye contact with your interviewer, but in this case not breaking eye contact with the webcam, it just makes things a little weird. Feel free to let your eyeballs breathe and check your notes if you need to. Also make sure you go through their practice questions ahead of time so that you can know what the process will feel like. If you do that, you’ll know that you only have 30 seconds to review the question before your camera starts recording. Then you have three minutes to answer, don't feel like you have to use all three minutes - just move on to the next question when you’re done. So I know it’s a video interview but just treat it like a regular interview and find a quiet place that’s free of distractions. Dress the part. For Bamboo, that means not too formal, but not too cas’. You can leave the tie in the closet, but don’t leave everything in the closet. And last but not least, have some fun with it. Like I said, a little personality goes a long way. Oh man, that is such a good question. That i- I mean, wow. That is such a good, it’s it’s, I mean, oh my gosh, it’s a great question. Uhhhhhhhh…

Do Investment Banks Add Value to the Economy, Day Trade or Give Loans? (2003)

03:48:28
An investment bank is a financial institution that assists individuals, corporations, and governments in raising financial capital by underwriting or acting as the client's agent in the issuance of securities (or both). An investment bank may also assist companies involved in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and provide ancillary services such as market making, trading of derivatives and equity securities, and FICC services (fixed income instruments, currencies, and commodities). Unlike commercial banks and retail banks, investment banks do not take deposits. From 1933 (Glass–Steagall Act) until 1999 (Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act), the United States maintained a separation between investment banking and commercial banks. Other industrialized countries, including G8 countries, have historically not maintained such a separation. As part of the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (Dodd-Frank Act of 2010), Volcker Rule asserts full institutional separation of investment banking services from commercial banking. The two main lines of business in investment banking are called the sell side and the buy side. The "sell side" involves trading securities for cash or for other securities (e.g. facilitating transactions, market-making), or the promotion of securities (e.g. underwriting, research, etc.). The "buy side" involves the provision of advice to institutions concerned with buying investment services. Private equity funds, mutual funds, life insurance companies, unit trusts, and hedge funds are the most common types of buy side entities. An investment bank can also be split into private and public functions with an information barrier which separates the two to prevent information from crossing. The private areas of the bank deal with private insider information that may not be publicly disclosed, while the public areas such as stock analysis deal with public information. An advisor who provides investment banking services in the United States must be a licensed broker-dealer and subject to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) regulation. Investment banking has changed over the years, beginning as a partnership form focused on underwriting security issuance, i.e. initial public offerings (IPOs) and secondary market offerings, brokerage, and mergers and acquisitions, and evolving into a "full-service" range including securities research, proprietary trading, and investment management. In the modern 21st century, the SEC filings of the major independent investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley reflect three product segments: (1) investment banking (fees for M&A advisory services and securities underwriting); (2) asset management (fees for sponsored investment funds), and (3) trading and principal investments (broker-dealer activities including proprietary trading ("dealer" transactions) and brokerage trading ("broker" transactions)).[3] In the United States, commercial banking and investment banking were separated by the Glass–Steagall Act, which was repealed in 1999. After the financial crisis of 2007–08 and the subsequent passage of the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010, regulations have limited certain investment banking operations, notably with the Volcker Rule's restrictions on proprietary trading.[2] The traditional service of underwriting security issues has declined as a percentage of revenue. As far back as 1960, 70% of Merrill Lynch's revenue was derived from transaction commissions while "traditional investment banking" services accounted for 5%. However, Merrill Lynch was a relatively "retail-focused" firm with a large brokerage network. The investment banking industry, and many individual investment banks, have come under criticism for a variety of reasons, including perceived conflicts of interest, overly large pay packages, cartel-like or oligopolic behavior, taking both sides in transactions, and more. Investment banking has also been criticised for its opacity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investment_banking

How Do Investment Banks Work? What is Investment Banking? How Do Investment Banks Work? The investment banking division is sometimes referred to as corporate finance and is broadly split into 2 sectors, products and industries. The purpose of both is to provide advisory on transactions, mergers and acquisitions and to arrange (and sometimes even provide) financing for these transactions. This area of banking is the subject of the popular book “Monkey Business: Swinging Through the Wall Street Jungle”. Investment banks are categorized as a "bulge bracket" bank, regional bank or a boutique. Larger banks are considered to be bulge bracket banks and offer a full service approach to clients. The bulge bracket is comprised of nine top banks that include Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Barclays Capital and JP Morgan Chase. Finance Wisdom For You Finance Wisdom For You While the sexier functions like M&A advisory are "front office," other functions like risk management, financial control, corporate treasury, corporate strategy, compliance, operations and technology are critical back office functions.
