Real English Vocabulary: At the BANK

08:41
This is a practical vocabulary lesson about words we use at the bank. Banking has a set of specialized vocabulary, and you may be nervous to go to the bank in an English-speaking country. But knowing some useful words will make it easy and pleasant for you. In this lesson, I will teach you the meaning of "bank teller", "PIN", "investments", "account", "deposit", "withdraw", and many more terms associated with going to the bank. If you want to feel more confident when going to the bank and speaking in English, watch this lesson and complete the quiz. After that, you'll be in business! http://www.engvid.com/real-english-vocabulary-at-the-bank/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on "Bank Vocabulary". Today, we're going to talk about going to the bank, and the different things you can do, and the different verbs associated and nouns associated with this very common experience. So, first, when you enter the bank, you have to "get in line" or "get in the queue". Now, specifically, in the United States, even in Canada, we use the word "line" when you're waiting to see someone at the bank. If you are in other parts of the world, specifically England, you can also call a line a "queue", so you get in the queue or get in line. Next, once it's your turn to, you know, do your business at the bank, you see a "bank teller". So, the name of the person who helps you at the bank is the teller. And after you see the bank teller, if you already have an account with the bank, you have to use your bank card and put in your "PIN". Your "PIN" is your personal identification number, your code, your password. Right? Now, once this is done, you're ready, the bank teller can see your account. Or maybe it's your first time and you didn't put in a PIN, there are different things you can do and ask for when you're at the bank. Number one, you can say: "Hi. I'd like to open an account", or "close an account". Now, again the two most common types of accounts at a bank are a checking account and a savings account. So your checking is your everyday spending. This is what you use your debit card for. Right? So, I'm just going to put "debit card" here. Your debit card is your bank card, and this is what you use to make payments when you go out to restaurants, movie theaters, etc. Okay, you can also transfer money when you are at the bank. So if you'd like to move some money from your checking account, for example, to one of your other accounts, such as a savings account or maybe a joint account that you have with your partner, husband, wife, etc., you can ask to do that. You can say: "Hi. I'd like to transfer $200 from my checking account to my savings account." And again, this is if you don't do online banking, which solves a lot of these issues. Now, instead of transferring money, you can also "deposit" money or "make a deposit". This means you are putting money into your accounts. So if you, you know, receive a check from the government, for example, or maybe your workplace still gives checks (it still happens, it does), you can deposit that check. And "deposit it" means put that money into your account. You can "withdraw". Now, "to withdraw" is to take out money. So, these two are really the most common verbs when you're talking about exchanging money with the bank, whether you're in the bank or at an ATM machine. So you deposit, which means you put money in; withdraw means you take money out. So you can withdraw or take out money. And the term we can also use is you can make a "withdrawal". And you'll see the "al" here, this means that, again, this is a noun in this case. The verb, there's no "al" at the end; it's just "withdraw". Withdraw money. You can "pay a bill". So, again, bills are our favourite things in the world, like pay for your electricity at your house, or your television, internet, etc. Now, again, this doesn't only have to be for those common things, because most people today, you have an automatic withdraw happens when you pay for a bill. But again, sometimes you get something where you have to go to the bank to pay the bill. If you get something from the Ministry of Transportation or something from the government, and it's unclear what you have to do to pay something online, you can go to the bank and you can pay that bill. Also, you can "exchange currency". So if you are travelling somewhere and you only have money from your country, you can change that money. And again, the name for "money" in this case is "currency", like the dollar is one type of currency, the yen is another type of currency. And you can ask the bank: "What's your rate?" because different places, exchange offices, banks, will have different rates for your currency. So, for example, the bank might say, if I'm travelling from Canada to the United States, they might say: "95 cents per dollar." Okay? So for every dollar that I have Canadian, I receive 95 cents American.

I found the MOST PROFITABLE Savings Accounts (It’s not Robinhood)

13:23
After reading all the interest about Robinhood’s 3% Checking Account, I did some research and found the BEST Savings accounts that offer the highest interest…FDIC insured ;) Enjoy! Add me on Snapchat/Instagram: GPStephan Join the private Real Estate Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/therealestatemillionairemastermind/ GET $50 OFF FOR A LIMITED TIME WITH COUPON CODE: THANKYOU50 The Real Estate Agent Academy: Learn how to start and grow your career as a Real Estate Agent to a Six-Figure Income, how to best build your network of clients, expand into luxury markets, and the exact steps I’ve used to grow my business from $0 to over $125 million in sales: https://goo.gl/UFpi4c First Bank: Ally Bank As of mid December 2018, they offer a 2% annual return on your money in their online savings account. And this is with no strings attached…no account minimums, no maximums, no need to make direct deposit every month to quality, no conditions to meet…no waiting list of over 700,000 to join…it’s just open up an account, put your money in, and enjoy a 2% return! Second Bank: American Express Savings They offer the same 2% return just like Ally Bank does. I’ve been an American Express customer since 2012 and AMEX has been nothing but amazing. Their accounts also have no fees, no minimums, and a pretty decent way to get 2% return if you’re already an AMEX customer. Oh, and it’s FDIC insured ;) Third Bank: Capital One 360 They also offer a no fee account that offers 2% interest…but they’re not quite as good because to get the 2%, you need to keep a minimum of $10,000 in your account. So most likely, the other two options are a little better. Fourth Bank: Marcus by Goldman Sachs Right now they offer a slightly better rate than the previous 3, at 2.05% interest! No account minimums and no requirements to meet! Fifth Bank: Synchrony Bank. Pretty much the same as Marcus by Goldman Sachs and they also offer the same 2.05%! Sixth Bank: PNC Bank They offer 2.35% interest. That’s pretty much the highest that I’ve found on a savings account without any account minimum, without any fees, or without any weird deposit requirements, without any waiting lists, and best of all…while still having FDIC insurance! There are several other nation wide banks that offer 2.4%+ interest…although all of them had bad reviews, so I didn’t feel comfortable listing them. - In terms of other banks offering OVER 3% to match or even beat Robinhood…yes, that does exist. There are several other REGIONAL BANKS that offer 3% AND HIGHER if you meet their requirements. The full list can be seen here: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/high-interest-savings-to-get/ So while Robinhood seems like the BEST option in terms of no fees, no requirements, and no minimums to make 3%, it MIGHT not be worth the risk if they don’t have SIPC insurance confirmed. And this video is really about just giving you some other ideas and options besides Robinhood. Even though you’ll make a bit less than 3%, the result is pretty negligible..the difference of .65% on $20,000 is only $10.83 per MONTH…and for that price, I think getting a better bank with better customer service is totally worth the price. So I hope this video was able to give you some solid options to think of! What is RETAIL BANKING? What does RETAIL BANKING mean? RETAIL BANKING meaning & explanation

✪✪✪ I MAKE CUTE BABIES ✪ https://amzn.to/2DqiynS ✪✪✪ What is RETAIL BANKING? What does RETAIL BANKING mean? RETAIL BANKING meaning - RETAIL BANKING definition - RETAIL BANKING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Retail banking also known as Consumer Banking is the provision of services by a bank to individual consumers, rather than to companies, corporations or other banks. Services offered include savings and transactional accounts, mortgages, personal loans, debit cards, and credit cards. The term is generally used to distinguish these banking services from investment banking, commercial banking or wholesale banking. It may also be used to refer to a division or department of a bank dealing with retail customers. In the US the term Commercial bank is used for a normal bank to distinguish it from an investment bank. After the great depression, through the Glass–Steagall Act, the U.S. Congress required that banks only engage in banking activities, whereas investment banks were limited to capital markets activities. This separation was repealed in the 1990s. Commercial bank can also refer to a bank or a division of a bank that mostly deals with deposits and loans from corporations or large businesses, as opposed to individual members of the public (retail banking).

Private Sector vs. Public Sector

If you were mailing an extremely important package, you'd probably trust FedEx more than the U.S. Postal Service. But why? Is it because FedEx is a private company, while the post office is run by the government? What are the differences between the "private sector" and the government sector? Why does it matter? Politicians in the media often talk about the private and public sectors of our economy but what's the difference? And which one is more effective? The private sector is made up of businesses or corporations owned by people. The private sector includes malls, grocery stores, and your local diner. To make a profit in the private sector, businesses must earn our money by offering us products and services that we want or need. When businesses have to compete for the same dollars, prices go down because no one wants to pay twice as much for shoes at one store if you can get the same pair cheaper at another place. On the other hand, the public sector is not supported by profits. It doesn't have to compete for our dollars. Instead, the public sector uses our tax dollars to fund its services. So we pay for these programs no matter how much or how little we use them. The government decides how our tax dollars should be spent in the public sector. This makes sense for some things. For example, you probably wouldn't want firefighters or police officers competing with one another for your business. In other cases though, this means things cost more or service is worse. The U.S. Post Office has $100 billion in debt and is regularly bailed out with taxpayer money. And the Department of Motor Vehicles isn't usually known for fast, friendly service. In contrast, private companies know that if they offer poor customer service and don't make money, they'll go out of business. When comparing the private sector with the public sector, it's clear that the market-driven private sector is more efficient. When you don't have to be profitable or accountable, things tend to be more expensive and the service is worse. So when there's a choice between a private sector or a government service, think about that package you really need delivered.

People Are Making Big Money Kicking Detroit Residents Out Of Their Homes (HBO)

10:57
In the last 15 years, one in three Detroit properties have been foreclosed on. When most people think of foreclosure, they think of people who can’t afford to pay off their mortgages. But in Detroit, it’s often the result of people struggling to pay their property taxes. One big reason is that, in the years after the Great Recession, the city went bankrupt and failed to lower property assessments far enough to account for the impact of the housing crisis. While the value of residents’ homes fell, their taxes remained inordinately high, and tens of thousands of people fell so far behind on their inflated tax bills that the county seized their homes and sold them off at annual auctions. In recent years, the city and county have lowered assessments and offered reduced interest rates to some homeowners. But they have no plans to stop punishing those who were overcharged in the past. VICE News followed this year’s tax foreclosure auction and investigated how the county financially benefits from the process. As Detroit touts its comeback and celebrates its success in climbing out of the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history, many of the city’s residents remain on the brink of displacement. Why Private Investment Works & Govt. Investment Doesn't

From transportation to energy, and everything in between, should the government invest money in as many promising projects as possible? Or would that actually doom many of those ventures to failure? Burt Folsom, historian and professor at Hillsdale College, answers those questions by drawing on the fascinating history of the race to build America's railroads and airplanes. A company going bankrupt is not news. But Solyndra was not just any company. Its biggest “investor” was the federal government which had given it $500 million dollars. That was news. But, really, it shouldn’t have been. If history is any guide, it was quite predictable. The government is a very poor investor. And always has been. There are countless examples, but two should serve our purpose here. After the Civil War, American leaders were anxious to bind the country’s North, South, East, and West regions together with transcontinental railroads. Congress therefore gave massive federal aid to build the Union Pacific, the Central Pacific, and later the Northern Pacific Railroads. But all three of these roads had huge financial problems. The Union Pacific, for example, was mired in financial scandal from its inception, went bankrupt several times, and had to rebuild large sections of track thanks to shoddy construction practices. At that same time, James J. Hill, with no federal aid whatsoever, built a railroad from St. Paul to Seattle -- the Great Northern. How was Hill able to do with private funds what the Union Pacific failed to do with a gift of tens of millions of federal dollars? The starting point is incentives. The Union Pacific was paid by the government for each mile of road it built. It was in the railroad’s interest not to build the road straight. The more miles it took the UP to cross Nebraska, for example, the more money it made. Hill, by contrast, used his own capital. To make a profit, he had to build his Great Northern Railroad sturdy and straight. Hill’s company remained in business for almost a hundred years until 1970 when it merged with other railroads. The original Union Pacific, riddled with corruption and numerous other financial misdeeds, including the wholesale bribery of public officials, went broke within ten years. The story of the airplane is even more stark. By the opening of the twentieth century, the major nations of Europe and America were frantically at work trying to invent a flying machine. The first nation to do so would have a huge military and commercial advantage. In fact, leading American politicians of the day, such as Teddy Roosevelt, President William McKinley, and others argued that building an airplane was a national emergency. There was no time, they argued, to wait for private industry to get the job done. The government needed to pick the best aeronautics expert and give him the money he needed. That expert was Samuel Langley, the president of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution and holder of honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Oxford, and Cambridge. Langley was already an accomplished inventor and he had written a highly praised book Experiments in Aerodynamics. Federal officials gave Langley funds for two trial flights. He immediately set to work. His theory was that his plane needed to be thrust into the air from a houseboat on the Potomac River. The big engine on the plane would then propel it through air for several minutes. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/why-private-investment-works-govt-investment-doesnt

05 31 15 - US FOREIGN INVESTMENT TAXATION w/Mark Nestmann

26:24
MARK NESTMANN: Since 1990 has helped hundreds of clients seeking wealth preservation and international tax planning solutions. He is the author of many books and reports dealing with these subjects and a popular public speaker. Beginning his career as an investigative journalist in 1983, Nestmann now serves as President of The Nestmann Group, Ltd., an international consultancy assisting individuals to achieve their wealth preservation goals. He also is the Tax and Asset Protection editor for The Sovereign Society. Nestmann divides his time between offices in Vienna, Austria and Phoenix, Arizona. In 2005, Nestmann was awarded a "Master of Law" (LL.M.) degree in international tax law at the Vienna University School of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, Austria. Nestmann's research and thesis dealt with the subject of "exit taxes" imposed on individuals who change their tax residence from one jurisdiction to another. After establishing a noted career in international investment, Mark Nestmann left the US for three years to study for his "Master of Law" (LL.M.) degree in international tax law at the Vienna University School of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, Austria. This is an indication of the seriousness and rigor with which Mark tackles issues in International Taxation for his high net worth clients. He shared his views with the FINANCIAL REPRESSION AUTHORITY in this exclusive interview. FOREIGN ACCOUNT TAX COMPLIANCE ACT - FATCA Passed in 2010 and hidden as part of a "Military Pensions Act", no one fully understood what it meant or paid much attention to it. "The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, is one of the most arrogant and one-sided laws ever passed by Congress. The idea behind FATCA, which Congress enacted in 2010, is simple: Demand that other countries enforce America’s imperialistic tax laws. And do so by the confiscation of foreign assets, if necessary." - Why FATCA Is a Train Wreck Waiting to Happen - Mark Nestmann "What is happening is foreign financial institutions (which is defined very broadly in the act) under the law are required to identify their US clients and force their US clients to self identify and turn over information to the IRS." "If the banks or countries don't comply then 30% of their US source income (and in some case 30% of source gross sales revenues) of things like stocks, bonds, CDs etc are withheld - this is a pretty big number! The only way banks can avoid the 30% withholding tax is to essentially act as unpaid IRS informants." "Not surprisingly, FATCA and numerous other laws that require FFIs to enforce US money laundering, anti-terrorism, and securities regulations have led most of these institutions to fire their US clients. Perhaps one in 10 – and possibly fewer – non-US banks still permit US citizens or permanent residents to open accounts. That leaves little choice for Americans but to deal only with banks that have agreed to toe the IRS line." - Why FATCA Is a Train Wreck Waiting to Happen - Mark Nestmann "Non US persons investing in the US are also effected by FATCA. If their foreign bank don't comply their US investment is whacked 30% as well - It isn't just Americas who should care about this but basically everyone in the world!" This is not a good time to have unreported financial accounts in countries that have already signed FATCA agreements with the US, or are about to. If you’re in this situation, you might want to seriously consider retaining a tax attorney to enroll you in the IRS’s latest Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program. PASSIVE FOREIGN INVESTMENT COMPANY - PFIC "PFIC is another aspect of Financial Repression and aspect of regulatory restrictions on investment choices." "If you have an investment vehicle registered outside the US the IRS will consider it a PFIC. As an example of the way this tax is very unfavorable is that unless an offshore Mutual Fund qualifies as a US Mutual Fund when you sell it (or deemed to sell it) you have to file not only a return on the income by also a "throwback" interest charge for EVERY YEAR you held the fund. Additionally the tax rate is computed at the highest marginal rate in that year!" "What happens is that people who held offshore mutual funds for a long period of time windup losing every penny of income in that fund because it is paid out in taxes and interest penalties." ... there is much, much more in this 26 minute video interview covering: CITIZENSHIP TAXATION (including the absurdity of 1986 Tax Legislation for "Mars"??) UNOFFICIAL CAPITAL CONTROLS NOW IN PLACE, US 2008 "EXIT TAX" (for citizens and Green Card holders on unrealized gains), INHERITANCE IRS TAX GRABS, THE NEW EX-PATRIOT ACT, INVESTING ABROAD, THE RATE OF ACCELERATION OF RESTRICTIVE FOREIGN CHOICES FOR AMERICANS, THE GROWING MOVEMENT TOWARDS SECOND CITIZENSHIP PROTECTION, WHY THE LEGAL ABOLISHMENT OF CASH IS COMING.

Do Investment Banks Add Value to the Economy, Day Trade or Give Loans? (2003)

03:48:28
An investment bank is a financial institution that assists individuals, corporations, and governments in raising financial capital by underwriting or acting as the client's agent in the issuance of securities (or both). An investment bank may also assist companies involved in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and provide ancillary services such as market making, trading of derivatives and equity securities, and FICC services (fixed income instruments, currencies, and commodities). Unlike commercial banks and retail banks, investment banks do not take deposits. From 1933 (Glass–Steagall Act) until 1999 (Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act), the United States maintained a separation between investment banking and commercial banks. Other industrialized countries, including G8 countries, have historically not maintained such a separation. As part of the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (Dodd-Frank Act of 2010), Volcker Rule asserts full institutional separation of investment banking services from commercial banking. The two main lines of business in investment banking are called the sell side and the buy side. The "sell side" involves trading securities for cash or for other securities (e.g. facilitating transactions, market-making), or the promotion of securities (e.g. underwriting, research, etc.). The "buy side" involves the provision of advice to institutions concerned with buying investment services. Private equity funds, mutual funds, life insurance companies, unit trusts, and hedge funds are the most common types of buy side entities. An investment bank can also be split into private and public functions with an information barrier which separates the two to prevent information from crossing. The private areas of the bank deal with private insider information that may not be publicly disclosed, while the public areas such as stock analysis deal with public information. An advisor who provides investment banking services in the United States must be a licensed broker-dealer and subject to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) regulation. Investment banking has changed over the years, beginning as a partnership form focused on underwriting security issuance, i.e. initial public offerings (IPOs) and secondary market offerings, brokerage, and mergers and acquisitions, and evolving into a "full-service" range including securities research, proprietary trading, and investment management. In the modern 21st century, the SEC filings of the major independent investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley reflect three product segments: (1) investment banking (fees for M&A advisory services and securities underwriting); (2) asset management (fees for sponsored investment funds), and (3) trading and principal investments (broker-dealer activities including proprietary trading ("dealer" transactions) and brokerage trading ("broker" transactions)).[3] In the United States, commercial banking and investment banking were separated by the Glass–Steagall Act, which was repealed in 1999. The repeal led to more "universal banks" offering an even greater range of services. Many large commercial banks have therefore developed investment banking divisions through acquisitions and hiring. Notable large banks with significant investment banks include JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, and Wells Fargo. After the financial crisis of 2007–08 and the subsequent passage of the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010, regulations have limited certain investment banking operations, notably with the Volcker Rule's restrictions on proprietary trading.[2] The traditional service of underwriting security issues has declined as a percentage of revenue. As far back as 1960, 70% of Merrill Lynch's revenue was derived from transaction commissions while "traditional investment banking" services accounted for 5%. However, Merrill Lynch was a relatively "retail-focused" firm with a large brokerage network. The investment banking industry, and many individual investment banks, have come under criticism for a variety of reasons, including perceived conflicts of interest, overly large pay packages, cartel-like or oligopolic behavior, taking both sides in transactions, and more. Investment banking has also been criticised for its opacity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investment_banking

Investment Banking Operations: Financial Derivatives and Options Trading - Career (1998)

Investment banking has changed over the years, beginning as a partnership form focused on underwriting security issuance (initial public offerings and secondary offerings), brokerage, and mergers and acquisitions, and evolving into a "full-service" range including sell-side research, proprietary trading, and investment management. In the modern 21st century, the SEC filings of the major independent investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley reflect three product segments: (1) investment banking (fees for M&A advisory services and securities underwriting); (2) asset management (fees for sponsored investment funds), and (3) trading and principal investments (broker-dealer activities including proprietary trading ("dealer" transactions) and brokerage trading ("broker" transactions)).[3] In the United States, commercial banking and investment banking were separated by the Glass--Steagall Act, which was repealed in 1999. The repeal led to more "universal banks" offering an even greater range of services. Many large commercial banks have therefore developed investment banking divisions through acquisitions and hiring. As far back as 1960, 70% of Merrill Lynch's revenue was derived from transaction commissions while "traditional investment banking" services accounted for 5%. However, Merrill Lynch was a relatively "retail-focused" firm with a large brokerage network. Corporate finance is the traditional aspect of investment banks which also involves helping customers raise funds in capital markets and giving advice on mergers and acquisitions (M&A). This may involve subscribing investors to a security issuance, coordinating with bidders, or negotiating with a merger target. Another term for the investment banking division is corporate finance, and its advisory group is often termed "mergers and acquisitions". A pitch book of financial information is generated to market the bank to a potential M&A client; if the pitch is successful, the bank arranges the deal for the client. The investment banking division (IBD) is generally divided into industry coverage and product coverage groups. Industry coverage groups focus on a specific industry -- such as healthcare, public finance (governments), FIG (financial institutions group), industrials, TMT (technology, media, and telecommunication) -- and maintains relationships with corporations within the industry to bring in business for the bank. Product coverage groups focus on financial products -- such as mergers and acquisitions, leveraged finance, public finance, asset finance and leasing, structured finance, restructuring, equity, and high-grade debt -- and generally work and collaborate with industry groups on the more intricate and specialized needs of a client. The Wall Street Journal, in partnership with Dealogic, publishes figures on investment banking revenue such as M&A in its Investment Banking Scorecard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investment_banking
