Pat Dorsey: "The Little Book that Builds Wealth" | Talks at Google

01:10:15
What does it mean for a company to have a moat? What are the key drivers to valuation? Pat Dorsey will use examples to shed light on these, and more questions. About the Book: Capitalism works. That’s why most businesses with high returns on capital attract competition that forces down profitability over time. However, a small minority of companies are able to defy the laws of economic gravity by creating competitive advantages, or “economic moats” that insulate them from competition and allow them to maintain high returns on capital. After spending fifteen years analyzing thousands of companies, Pat has identified a handful of structural characteristics that create competitive advantage. He will discuss these characteristics, how management teams can create and destroy competitive advantage, and how he applies competitive analysis in managing institutional capital at Dorsey Asset Management. About the author: Pat is the founder of Dorsey Asset Management, which manages concentrated global portfolios for institutional investors. Prior to starting Dorsey Asset, Pat was Director of Research for Sanibel Captiva Trust, an independent trust company with approximately $1 billion in assets under management serving high net worth clients. From 2000 to 2011, Pat was Director of Equity Research for Morningstar, where he led the growth of Morningstar’s equity research group from 10 to over 100 analysts. Pat developed Morningstar’s economic moat ratings, as well as the methodology behind Morningstar's framework for analyzing competitive advantage. Pat is also the author of two books — The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing and The Little Book that Builds Wealth — and has been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, the New York Times, and BusinessWeek. Pat holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Wesleyan University. He is a CFA charterholder.

This is Joe Perry from Real Vision. We're here at the CMT Symposium, and we are pleased to present you this interview between Ralph Acampora and Alan Shaw, two legends not only on Wall Street, but also in technical analysis. They're here to provide you with a glimpse into the future of technical analysis, as well as to provide some reflection into the past. Please enjoy this episode. Hello. My name is Ralph Acampora. And I am so happy to say that I'm with one of my dearest friends, Alan Shaw. What do you like most about the years you've been in Wall Street? Is it the subject, the people? Well, I have a very personal gratitude, that is the fact that I had the pleasure and the ability to experience one of the greatest bull markets in the history of the United States and lived through it and have been a participant in it, I mean, a once-in-a-lifetime type thing, coming in the business in the late '50s and then going all through the '60s. And finally the market broke through 1,000 and then 10,000 and now 20,000. It's kind of fascinating when you think back. You obviously got to look at the long-term picture on a large scale, keep it in perspective. Yeah, a lot has happened. What we do, as you just mentioned, we follow the markets. But I know you've had in your early days had a beginning in fundamental analysis. Tell us a little bit about that because you have an interesting story about when you were right. Well, I flunked out of college in my freshman year. And I have since been given an honorary doctorate law degree from that same university for my Wall Street accomplishments, you might like to know. How much you have to pay for that? That's another discussion. I'm only kidding. But the point was that I really didn't have any background in finance except accounting, my one year. I passed that. And I discovered that Harris Upham-- I was doing a lot of work for Ralph Rotnem statistically, overbought, oversold, indicators, or just doing research for him. In fact, my first computer was a slide rule. And I used to do relative strength analysis, calculating ratios with the slide rule, dividend yields, PE multiples, all that stuff. And they had specialists in the research department. And I was in my early 20s at the time and again, without any formal education. But I went to Ralph, and I said, you don't have anybody specializing in the consumer non-durables, like foods, beverages, soft drinks, whatever. And he said, well, would you like to take a crack at it? i said yes, because I think that there's a tremendous growth opportunity, that these are not really widow and orphan defensive stocks because of the growth of things like frozen foods, convenience foods. The profit margins on these products were incredible.

Google Buys JD.COM!? Should You BUY NOW!? | JD.com Stock Analysis

06:51
Google (GOOGL) recently invested $550 million into Chinese online retailer JD.com (JD). But what’s the reason for this? How does it benefit the two companies? We explain it in the video above! JD.com is basically China’s Amazon (AMZN), but it’s a supercharged version. JD owns its entire logistics chain, unlike Amazon, and is able to deliver packages must faster than Amazon can. JD is also the number one most trusted e-commerce website in China. In addition, it’s undervalued with a price to sales ratio of close to 1, whereas its nearest competitor, Alibaba (BABA) has a price to sales ratio of almost 14! The CEO of JD.com, Richard Liu, is also a big factor in the company’s success. Richard came was born into a family of poor peasant farmers and built JD from the ground up. His work ethic has pushed the company forward since day one. The partnership with Google helps JD because the company will be able to sell their products directly through Google Shopping. JD has been trying to expand out of China and into the US and Europe and this partnership with Google should help. And of course JD’s products will now show up higher in Google’s search now that they are partners. The partnership also helps Google because it gives them a way to compete against Amazon. The recent trend of companies has been to move their advertising dollars away from Google and towards Amazon. The reason for that is because Amazon is in a powerful position by being directly at the point of sale for the customer. And when a customer is already looking to buy, ads have a much larger impact on them. To learn more about why Google is making this investment in JD, watch the video above! An Analysis of Investment Strategies...in the Vietname Stock Market. Ming-Chin et al (2015)

09:38
An academic paper read by Sawyer Investment Management Company regarding the factor returns exhibiting in the Vietnamese stock market Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to understand the linkages between excess returns and four investment strategies - value, momentum, size, and liquidity - for the Vietnam stock market during the period 2006-2014. The empirical results suggest that a value strategy, such as the E/P and B/P ratios, and momentum and liquidity strategies are the most successful and generate significant excess returns, in contrast to the size strategy, which does not workin the Vietnam stock mark. Therefore, investors who want to make a profit when investing in the Vietnam stock market should track published financial information and find winner stocks by referring to value, momentum, and liquidity strategies. marketing research for beginners, understanding marketing research fundamentals

01:13:22
marketing research for beginners, understanding marketing research fundamentals. Definition: The process of gathering, analyzing and interpreting information about a market, about a product or service to be offered for sale in that market, and about the past, present and potential customers for the product or service; research into the characteristics, spending habits, location and needs of your business's target market, the industry as a whole, and the particular competitors you face. Market research provides relevant data to help solve marketing challenges that a business will most likely face--an integral part of the business planning process. In fact, strategies such as market segmentation (identifying specific groups within a market) and product differentiation (creating an identity for a product or service that separates it from those of the competitors) are impossible to develop without market research. Market research involves two types of data: Primary information. This is research you compile yourself or hire someone to gather for you. Secondary information. This type of research is already compiled and organized for you. Examples of secondary information include reports and studies by government agencies, trade associations or other businesses within your industry. Most of the research you gather will most likely be secondary. When conducting primary research, you can gather two basic types of information: exploratory or specific. Exploratory research is open-ended, helps you define a specific problem, and usually involves detailed, unstructured interviews in which lengthy answers are solicited from a small group of respondents. Specific research, on the other hand, is precise in scope and is used to solve a problem that exploratory research has identified. Interviews are structured and formal in approach. Of the two, specific research is the more expensive.

Does Rail Transit Investment Encourage Neighborhood Retail Activity?

51:28
Presented by METRANS Transportation Center as part of the Transportation Research Seminar Series. Over the past 20 years, California has made substantial investments in intra-metropolitan passenger rail infrastructure, expanding existing systems and building new ones. According to advocates of New Urbanism, such investment should encourage the growth of mixed-use transit-oriented development, defined as a high-density mix of residential and commercial uses within walking distance of rail stations. Little research to date has examined whether rail investment stimulates retail activity, which is a key component of mixed-use development. In this seminar, we examine whether the opening of new rail stations across California's four largest metropolitan areas has affected retail employment within one-quarter mile of the stations, compared to similar neighborhoods around older stations or with no rail stations. Jenny Schuetz is an Assistant Professor in the Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Her primary research interests are urban and real estate economics, local public finance, and housing policy. Her research has been published in a variety of journals, including Regional Science and Urban Economics, the Journal of Housing Economics, Real Estate Economics, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, and Urban Studies. Current research projects include urban retail location patterns and the relationship between art galleries and neighborhood change. Dr. Schuetz teaches classes in real estate finance and policy analysis. Dr. Schuetz earned a B.A. with Highest Distinction in Economics and Political and Social Thought from the University of Virginia, a Master's in City Planning from M.I.T., a Ph.D. in Public Policy from Harvard University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at NYU's Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy. Previously Dr. Schuetz worked for Abt Associates Inc., the Fannie Mae Foundation and the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University.

Dave Kranzler: Gold Stocks Looking Attractive Again

49:13
Jason Burack of Wall St for Main St had on returning guest, former Wall St bond trader, investment analyst, gold fund manager, founder of Investment Research Dynamics http://investmentresearchdynamics.com/ and co-creator of the popular Shadow of Truth podcast with Rory Hall, Dave Kranzler. Dave worked on Wall St for over 2 decades and his articles on Investment Research Dynamics are normally well written and quite insightful about the global economy, gold market, etc. During this 30+ minute interview, Jason asks Dave about the state of the global economy and if it's one big mess? Dave says calling the global economy a mess implies that things can be cleaned up and he believes things cannot be cleaned up. Dave expects a depression at least as bad as the 1929 Great Depression in the near future. Jason then asks Dave about the recent rally in stocks, copper, oil and base metals and if it was a short covering rally or if the bottom in oil is real? Dave thinks this recent rally in oil, copper, etc is 100% a bear market rally or short covering rally without any fundamental justification. Jason then asks Dave about the banks exposure to the oil market? Dave thinks the banks are lying to keep larger oil companies from going bankrupt and to make bank balance sheets appear much better than reality. Next, Jason asks Dave how he finds good shorting ideas for his new paid newsletter, Short Seller's Journal. Dave says he looks for macro trends where entire industries bomb earnings and Dave looks for the worst companies of an industry to short. Jason ans Dave then discuss why many prominent value investors also short companies besides buying bargain value stocks. To wrap up the interview Jason asks Dave about a bottom in gold and gold mining stocks and what the global economy and US may look like 10 years from now? Dave thinks gold stocks are very attractive to purchase on dips right now and Dave is buying juniors for extra leverage. Dave says he has no idea what the world will look like 10 years from now because of the totalitarian policies from politicians and bankers making things worse on basically a daily basis. Fake Stock Tips Call from Indore - How they trap Investor or Trader

23:46
Fake Stock Tips Call is a very big nuisance in the stock market. The ignorant investor or traders are trapped by the companies who provide Fake Stock Tips Call. The investor or trader trust these companies and take a position as suggested by these agencies. Recently, I received one such call. The executive was insisting me to go for intraday trading as it is the safest bet for them. For example, if they target 100 traders then they give BUY call to 50 clients and SELL call to rest 50 clients. By doing this their success rate is always 50%. During my call, i requested the executive to provide me the two calls for swing trading and unfortunately, both were loss-making trades. In the comments section on my YouTube channel, i get a lot of inputs from the viewers how they lost huge money because of these Fake Stock Tips Call. The objective of this video is just to caution the viewers against these Fake Stock Tips Call. 10. Real Estate

01:08:44
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) Real estate finance is so important that it has a very long and complex history. Describing the history of mortgage financing, Professor Shiller highlights the historical development of well-institutionalized property rights for mortgage contracts. Subsequently, he focuses on modern financial institutions for commercial real estate, elaborating on Direct Participation Programs and Real Estate Investment Trusts as means for its financing. The distinction between short-term, balloon-payment mortgages before the Great Depression and long-term, amortizing mortgages thereafter shapes the discussion of residential real estate. His discussion of mortgage securitization and government support of mortgage markets centers around Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, from their inception in 1938 and 1970, respectively, to the U.S. government's decision to put them into federal conservatorship in 2008. Finally, Professor Shiller covers collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs) and elaborates on moral hazard in the mortgage origination process. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
