A $1 trillion money manager says Japan is his favorite international investment
Business Insider deputy executive editor Matt Turner speaks to David Hunt, president and CEO of PGIM, who says that Japan is at the top of his firm's list in terms of international opportunities. He notes that there are large institutional investors there looking to put money into high-yielding assets elsewhere in the world. He calls it a "search for yield 2.0," which is something we haven't seen in quite some time from the Japanese. Following is a transcript of the video. Matt Turner: Going back a step, you mentioned Bank of Japan, or the Japanese market, and Europe. Outside of the US, where do you see opportunity? You mentioned India as well. David Hunt: There's no question we would certainly have Japan at the top of our list. We do believe that there are large institutional investors there who are looking very actively to put their money to work outside of Japan and to move into higher-yielding assets. I would've said that their search for yield 1.0 was to move into the US and to move to kind of investment grade corporates. We're now really seeing a search for yield 2.0, which has to do with high-yield, emerging markets, and structured products, which as you know, we hadn't seen for quite some time from the Japanese. So, I think we do believe that there is a lot more yet to run on the movement of money out of Japan. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. Are collectible items a good investment?
AES International - Making the world healthy, wealthy and wise. https://goo.gl/jkUZXd -- Connect with us -- Twitter: https://goo.gl/W8hF3o LinkedIn: https://goo.gl/2xnJLx Facebook: https://goo.gl/dwWb3P Google+: https://goo.gl/kHiAV6 -- Transcript -- Are collectible items a good investment? RP: Many people enjoy collecting valuable items — classic cars, works of art, fine wine and so on. But does collecting make sense from an investment point of view? Elroy Dimson and Christophe Spaenjers analysed the returns provided by art, stamps and musical instruments, and compared them to returns from other asset classes. Between 1900 and 2012, collectibles — often referred to as emotional assets — produced a nominal annualised return of 6.4%, and a real return of 2.4%. ED: There are basically three return paths that we see. For risky financial asset like equities, they’ve performed pretty well. They’ve received a financial dividend, which is what contributes to their performance. And then, if you look at the bottom end, you’ll find that there are treasury bills or cash and other assets which have produced a small income such as gold, or silver, which produced none at all. And in between, there are these emotional assets which produce a ‘psychic’ income — the pleasure of owning an artwork or a collectible violin, or a very, very fine wine. And their annual performance is higher than that of gold or silver, for example, higher than diamonds, higher than treasury bills, but lower than the excellent long-term returns from investing in the equity market. RP: So, the investment return from buying collectibles is reasonable. The key question to ask yourself is “How much do you really enjoy it?” ED: It’s pretty tough to have the finest artworks as part of a portfolio because each one costs millions of dollars. But if you’re asking in broad terms, “Who should be investing in these assets?” — it’s those who get the most pleasure out of it. So, I don’t know about you, but you may find that postage stamps look like a scrap of paper. To some people, they’re something of great beauty. Well, the appropriate person to collect high-quality stamps is the person who finds them beautiful. The same thing goes for bottles of wine. If you know you have a cellar which contains the finest wines and you gain pleasure from that, that’s an investment that’s worth making. RP: In a nutshell, emotional assets should be seen as a hobby first and an investment second. Only you can decide whether collecting for investment is worth your while. Goodbye. Mo Bro's Secure the Largest Investment Of The Series So Far On Dragons Den
Get 15% off our products by clicking the following link - https://www.mobros.co.uk/discount/DRAGONSDEN15 "An Investment milestone for the last two series was fantastic" The entrepreneurial trio from Mo Bro's (https://www.mobros.co.uk) are celebrating after its men’s facial grooming venture was given a major thumbs up on Dragons' Den. And it was quite a milestone for both the BBC2 programme and Mo Bro’s, which is the brainchild of Keval Dattani, Kunal Dattani and Savan Dattani. That’s because the brothers walked away with the biggest investment from the last two series of the show, which sees entrepreneurs pitch for backing from five venture capitalists in exchange for a share in the business. From a number of offers on the table, the trio plumped for Peter Jones CBE and Den newcomer Tej Lelvani, CEO of Vitabiotics, who agreed to invest £150,000 in return for a 20 per cent stake in the firm. Launched three years ago, Mo Bro’s grew from just a £750 investment into a firm with international appeal and a £1.3million turnover. Art As An Investment: Dr. Amin Jaffer of Christie's Advises
My name is Amin Jaffer and I am the International Director of Asian Art, at Christie's. People often come to us and ask about buying art for investment. Well, why do works of art often have value? Over time they often appreciate very dramatically. I would say that the principle reasons for buying a painting or piece of sculpture is because you love it. It means something to you and it enhances your life. If its something that is truly rare and special and If it is a great work of art, for sure overtime it's going to appreciate and have greater value.

Omenka Art As an Alternative Investment Seminar (Full Lecture-June 4, 2018)
Begun in 2012, we continue the next in our seminar series themed ‘Art as an Alternative Investment’. The rising value of Nigerian art at international auctions is evidence that collectors, financial institutions and wealth managers alike need to understand its worth. Research shows that art is an attractive investment for portfolio diversification as there is a low correlation with other financial assets. African modern and contemporary art in recent times has made a remarkable impression on the international art scene as works from the continent not only command increasingly high prices at auctions but also form a subject of profound interest for art collectors and scholars alike. In the present economic climate, it is imperative that maximum value is realised on assets held. Indeed, an art collection requires the same strategic planning as other financial assets.

What Makes an Artist? Grayson Perry in Conversation with Sarah Thornton | Tate Talks
Who do artists think they are? What myths are they rejecting and propagating? What is the social role of artists in different countries around the world today? How do artists negotiate power? Self-belief? Recognition? Author Sarah Thornton and artist Grayson Perry discuss how artists self-define and play the art-world game with particular attention to politics, kinship and craft, the three themes that structure Thornton’s forthcoming book, 33 Artists in 3 Acts. Thornton gained unprecedented access to major international artists, such as Ai Weiwei, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Marina Abramović, Francis Alÿs, Gabriel Orozco, Andrea Fraser, Christian Marclay and Isaac Julien to Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry himself. During the course of her five years of research, she investigated issues of credibility and self-belief, exploring the relationship between the artists’ everyday lives and art practices. Challenging preconceptions and unpicking the complex layers that form his identity, Perry offers insight into the influences and networks that feed into the development and production of his work. Surrealist Angel is one of the quintessential images of Dali's sculptural career, yet remains one of the more elusive bronzes for collectors to obtain. The example R&R Bond presently has available recently arrived from a Museum in Australia which conducted a Dali exhibit in conjunction with the Dali Foundation in Spain. While R&R Bond is presently speaking with several high-profile clients about this work, we expect it to be placed within the next few weeks. For more details please see www.rrbondgalleries.com

Making Cents of Art - Alison Gerber
This paper investigates artists' valuation of their own practices by looking at artists' investments and expectations around returns on investment. Using data from 80 semistructured interviews and ethnographic observation in four regionally defined art communities, the author explores patterns in artists' accounts of expected 'returns' on investments of money, time, space, energy, and other finite goods. While all artists make investments in their artistic practice, it is in expected returns that we find real variation. Two analytical frameworks -- speculation and credentialing -- allow artists to account for investments in artistic practice in economically calculative terms. Speculation and credentialing frameworks are both routes to the commensuration of the value of artistic practice with market value, but to commensurations with meaningful differences. Alison Gerber Alison Gerber is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at Yale University and a junior fellow of the Center for Comparative Research and the Center for Cultural Sociology. Her research focuses on work, culture, and public life. Her dissertation research examines variation in the ways artists define the value of their activities in order to investigate mechanisms that influence monetary valuation and occupational commitment. The project aims to develop a theory of valuation and its variation within occupations, and to illuminate valuation outside of stable employment relationships in order to contribute to our understanding of artists as well as economic and working life more generally. Alison holds a BA and BFA from the University of Minnesota, attended Critical Studies at Malmö Art Academy / Lund University, and holds an MA and MPhil from Yale University. She lives in New Haven, Connecticut. This Cultural Policy Center workshop was recorded on November 21, 2013. Research Handbook on Sovereign Wealth Funds and International Investment Law
BOOK REVIEW RESEARCH HANDBOOK ON SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUNDS AND INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT LAW Edited by Fabio Bassan Edward Elgar Publishing Limited ISBN: 978 1 78195 519 2 (book) 978 1 78195 520 8 (eBook) This book is available electronically in the Elgaronline Law subject collection DOI 10 4337/9781781955208 www.e-elgar.com www.elgaronline.com ANOTHER HIGH LEVEL FINANCIAL RESEARCH HANDBOOK FROM ELGAR ON INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENTS An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers Edward Elgar Publishing has taken over the mantle as one of the leading legal publishing houses which produce high quality research materials for the top end of academic endeavours whether it be by way of publishing edited theses or bringing together an array of glittering experts in a particular field to give us all a bit of individual enlightenment on the more difficult bits of financial law. And here, with the “Research Handbook on Sovereign Wealth Funds and International Investment Law” edited by the admirable Professor Fabio Bassan and his seventeen colleagues we have another timely contribution to this area of intellectual debate on international investment law. Bassan will be well known to many readers for his previous work from Elgar in 2011 entitled “The Law of Sovereign Wealth Funds” Four years later we have this new collection of essays researching the role that sovereign investments can play at a time of crisis when the materials and commentaries which are available to academics remain still highly unsatisfactory although a start has been made. Bassan continues with his main theme in his introduction, writing that “the focus continues to be on the active side (investment flows and trends), grounded in economic scenarios and objectives”. Note the use of his words here! He then goes on to say that “conversely, investigations from a legal standpoint are still few and not focused on the ‘passive side’, namely the host States’ concerns about sovereign investments’ goals and tools”. He concludes that both foreign direct investment and portfolio investments remain unexplained so his aim is to investigate “the state of the art of the legal investigation” plugging gaps by his contributors and he does just that with his method! So we can confirm that the book’s original structure whereby the editor set the contributors specific tasks is rightly described as illustrating the state of the art of the legal investigation on sovereign investments and filling necessary gaps in previous research with these new researched views. The editor’s current research focus is based on investment flows and trends, grounded in economic scenarios and objectives set out in his introduction. Conversely, investigations from a legal standpoint remain few in number, namely disregarding the host states’ concerns about sovereign investments goals and tools which is where the holes really are. Most of the many relevant drivers that affect current sovereign investments whether they are FDI or portfolio investments remain unexplained. Therefore, the task to investigate the juridical foundation of sovereign investments and extend our frontier of understanding is undertaken with relish. Bassan wants each chapter in the handbook to have “one least common denominator and a fil rouge connecting all chapters” and he does just that when you read the book, which as is to be expected is highly complex, in some detail. Thank you Professor Bassan as you have moved the discussion of sovereign wealth funds and international investment law some paces forward in 2015.
