Database Design 39 - Indexes (Clustered, Nonclustered, Composite Index)

13:28
This video covers the basics of indexes. Indexing is an extremely important step of database design. Without Indexes database queries can take a substantial amount of time and hog system resources. The main two classifications of indexes are clustered and non-clustered indexes. Clustered indexes are usually the primary key and determine how the data is actually stored in the table. These are the fastest and most effective. Non-clustered indexes sort a reference to data that is still fast but doesn't actually determine how the data is structured. The best tip I can give you is to use indexes but don't over use them. Having loads of indexes on columns that are barely ever in a where clause or join can bog down the database. This is because every time the table is updated the index must also be updated! When a database looks through a table for certain where conditions on a column that does not have an index, it does an entire table scan. This is not a good practice for large databases (or even small databases but not as bad). With an index the database will do an index seek and quickly find the data you are looking for. Composite indexes consist of two or more columns within one index. Use these when you plan on using the two columns together for a database query WHERE clause. Clustered and nonclustered indexes share many of the same internal structures, but they're fundamentally different in nature. Watch Microsoft Certified IT Professional Jon Seigel explain the similarities and differences of clustered and nonclustered indexes, using a real-world example to show how these structures work to improve the performance of SQL queries. Databases with Microsoft Access 10 –Field Indexing, Primary Keys, Index Creation

12:37
Creating Index for field brings with it: - Sorting field is faster - Searching field is faster - Indexing makes sense for fields with lots of different content - Indexing costs memory space and database response times All fields, with exception of OLE-fields can be indexed. You can index one or more fields Three types of Indices - With duplicates - Without duplicates - Primary keys Primary Key is main index of table - Does not allow duplicates - Each table can have only one primary key Recommendation for each table you create in Access - Create field, which contains unique data for each record - Endow this field with primary key

How to use Excel Index Match (the right way)

Complete Excel Dashboard course: https://courses.xelplus.com/p/professional-excel-dashboards Check out my other courses below. Download workbook here: http://www.xelplus.com/excel-index-and-match How to do Index Match in Excel: The basics. Watch this video tutorial to find out how you can use Index & Match for more complex lookup problems. This video shows you how Index Match works with simple and to the point explanation. It first shows you how Index works on it's own and then how Match works and then puts the two Excel functions together. Why index match is better than vlookup & why use index match instead of vlookup? Here are 3 reasons why Excel experts generally substitute VLOOKUP with INDEX and MATCH. 1. Unlike VLOOKUP, which searches only to the right, INDEX and MATCH can look in both directions – left and right. 2. INDEX & MATCH can perform two-way lookups by both looking along the rows and along the columns to find the intersection within a matrix. 3. INDEX & MATCH is less prone to errors. Assume you have a VLOOKUP where the final value you want returned is in column N. Your lookup value is in column A. You need to highlight the entire A to N range and then provide your index number to be 14. If you happen to delete any of the in-between columns, you would have to update that index number. You don’t need to worry about this when you use INDEX & MATCH. All in all, INDEX and MATCH is more flexible than VLOOKUP. Here are some of the reasons why Excel experts generally substitute VLOOKUP with INDEX and MATCH. Note: Index match is not case sensitive Index explained: The first argument of INDEX is to give it an array. This array (range) should include your answer. You then need to specify how many rows to go down and how many columns to move to find the correct value. You cannot move outside the INDEX range. The syntax of INDEX is: • The range where the return value resides. • Number of rows to move down (the row index) • Number of columns to move to the right (the column Index). This argument is optional. If you only have one column, you can leave the column argument empty, otherwise, you need to specify the number of columns to move over, in the range. The MATCH function’s syntax is as follows: • Like VLOOKUP, Match needs a lookup (target) value. The user can reference a cell or directly type the value into the formula. • Lookup_array: The “list” (range) where the return values are located. • Match_type: 0 for an “exact” match. Index MATCH used together: When INDEX and MATCH are used together, the MATCH function finds the look up value’s row / column index and then hands this value off to the INDEX function to get the lookup value. ★ My Online Excel Courses ► https://courses.xelplus.com/ ✉ Subscribe & get my TOP 10 Excel formulas e-book for free https://www.xelplus.com/free-ebook/ EXCEL RESOURCES I Recommend: https://www.xelplus.com/resources/ Get Office 365: https://microsoft.msafflnk.net/15OEg Microsoft Surface: https://microsoft.msafflnk.net/c/1327040/451518/7593 GEAR Camera: https://amzn.to/2FLiFho Screen recorder: http://techsmith.pxf.io/c/1252781/347799/5161 Microphone: https://amzn.to/2DVKstA Lights: http://amzn.to/2eJKg1U Note: This description contains affiliate links, which means at no additional cost to you, we will receive a small commission if you make a purchase using the links. Stanford Seminar - The Case for Learned Index Structures

55:40
EE380: Computer Systems Colloquium Seminar The Case for Learned Index Structures Speaker: Alex Beutel and Ed Chi, Google Indexes are models: a B-Tree-Index can be seen as a model to map a key to the position of a record within a sorted array, a Hash-Index as a model to map a key to a position of a record within an unsorted array, and a BitMap-Index as a model to indicate if a data record exists or not. In this talk, we take this premise and explain how existing database index structures can be replaced with other types of models, which we term learned indexes. The key idea is that a model can learn the sort order or structure of indexed data and use this signal to effectively predict the position or existence of records. We offer theoretical analysis under which conditions learned indexes outperform traditional index structures and we will delve into the challenges in designing learned index structures. Through addressing these challenges, our initial results show that learned indexes are able to outperform cache-optimized B-Trees by up to 70% in speed while saving an order-of-magnitude in memory over several real-world data sets. Finally, we will discuss the broader implications of learned indexes on database design and future directions for the ML for Database Systems research. About the Speaker: Alex Beutel is a Senior Research Scientist in the Google Brain team working on neural recommendation, fairness in machine learning, and ML for Systems. He received his Ph.D. in 2016 from Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Science Department, and previously received his B.S. from Duke University in computer science and physics. His Ph.D. thesis on large-scale user behavior modeling, covering recommender systems, fraud detection, and scalable machine learning, was given the SIGKDD 2017 Doctoral Dissertation Award Runner-Up. He received the Best Paper Award at KDD 2016 and ACM GIS 2010, was a finalist for best paper in KDD 2014 and ASONAM 2012, and was awarded the Facebook Fellowship in 2013 and the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship in 2011. Use the INDEX & MATCH Functions to Perform Lookups

06:16
Check out my Blog: http://exceltraining101.blogspot.com Have you every used VLOOKUP to do look ups from table to table? If you have you'd know there were some limitation on how it performs look ups, such as it would only lookup up the item in the first column of the table you are trying to bring data over from. There are ways to get around that limitation, but another method is to use the INDEX & MATCH functions to perform table look ups. It might be scary at first, but once you get the hang of using these two function together, you'll find it very useful. Check out the video to see how. #exceltips #exceltipsandtricks #exceltutorial #doughexcel

How to Extract Data from a Spreadsheet using VLOOKUP, MATCH and INDEX

15:54
When you need to find and extract a column of data from one table and place it in another, use the VLOOKUP function. This function works in any version of Excel in Windows and Mac, and also in Google Sheets. It allows you to find data in one table using some identifier it has in common with another table. The two tables can be on different sheets or even on different workbooks. There is also an HLOOKUP function, which does the same thing, but with data arranged horizontally, across rows. See the companion tutorial on Tuts+ at https://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-extract-data-from-a-spreadsheet-using-vlookup-match-and-index--cms-20641. By Bob Flisser.

Storage Series - Organization - Stamp Sentiments Visual Index Plus A Sentiment Database Search Tool

05:02
Last December I found myself in the unique position of starting a new stamp collection. It has been a year and I finally have enough sentiment stamps mixed in with my image stamps that it is becoming difficult to find them without an index tool. I do have a sentiment database on my website at http://www.stuffnthingz.com/sentiments, but because I travel in an RV full time, there are many times were I do not have the internet. We are having some unexpected work done on our truck which means I finally started my physical index. Introducing Let's Play Index: The Comprehensive Let's Play Database For Gaming Content Creators

12:18
I've been working for the past year on a new web project called "Let's Play Index", a comprehensive YouTube review and let's play database of gaming content creators. https://www.letsplayindex.com The goal of Let's Play Index is to create another avenue for exposure for these content creators, and also to compile statistics on these channels and the games they play for purposes such as keyword research, education, YouTube SEO and planning future content. As of the making of this video, Minecraft has over 100 billions views in total on YouTube, nearly 400,000 videos and 14 years worth of video content. https://www.letsplayindex.com/games/minecraft-2011 One of the biggest problems I've identified while making this website is that most gaming content creators on YouTube do not fill out the metadata on their videos properly. This leads to YouTube's algorithms considering their videos to be "irrelevant" in search, resulting in less exposure to their videos, and ultimately lower view and subscriber counts for smaller channels. To address the problem, I'm creating an SEO checking tool specifically tailored for video game content that will offer suggestions on how to improve the metadata of game-related videos. https://www.letsplayindex.com/youtube-seo-checker Let's Play Index is still a work in progress, but the site is functional and you can use it for many different purposes already. Video game research is the biggest reason to use the website because it has data on games that no one else has. I'm also going expand it further with keyword research tools, new ways of discovering content creators, and we're also going to help them understand how YouTube works in the real world so they can increase their viewership and subscriber counts.
