Good luck! Take the quiz on this lesson: https://www.engvid.com/ielts-general-writing-task-1/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. If you need to do the IELTS general exam, I'm sure it's for a very important reason. Perhaps you're trying to immigrate to another country, or get admission to a college program, or join a professional training program. Whatever your reason, I know you want to get the highest marks possible. Right? Of course. So I'm going to help you to do exactly that in one particular area of the exam, and that's in your writing section. Now, in the writing section there are two parts, one is a letter and one is an essay. In this lesson we will focus on how you can get the highest marks possible in the letter-writing section. Okay? The 14 tips that I'm going to give you I promise you, if you apply each one of these things, step by step you're going to get more and more marks. Okay? So stick with me and we will go through them. Let's get started. So, the first thing you have to identify when you read the letter-writing task is: What type of letter am I being asked to write? Is it a formal letter, is it a semi-formal letter, or is it an informal letter? Well, how do you know that? Well, you can know it in a few ways and I'm going to explain them, but one of the ways that you can know it is to look at the second point that you need to understand, is to identify the purpose of the letter because some purposes are more formal than other purposes. All right? For example, some formal letters might ask you to request information; or apply for a job; or complain about a product or a service, maybe to an airline, maybe to a store, something like that; or to make a suggestion or a recommendation. All right? To a shopping mall, to a restaurant, something like that. These are more formal situations. These are when we are writing to people or companies that we don't know. All right? That's the clue: You don't have anybody's name, you just have the name of the company. All right. Semi-formal letters might include things like this: Complaining to a landlord; or explaining something, a problem or a situation to a neighbour; or asking a professor for permission to miss an exam or to submit your assignment late. Whatever it is. Okay? The details vary. Doesn't matter. And here, what's...? What identifies the semi-formal? The semi-formal we know it's still a kind of a formal situation, but here we usually do know somebody's name. You would know the name of your landlord, or your professor, or your neighbour, for example. Right? So that means something in terms of the way that you write the letter, the language, the tone, the style. All of this is affected by whether it's formal, semi-formal, or informal. And I'll explain more to you as we go along. Now, examples of informal letters might be where you're being asked to invite a friend, or thank a friend, or apologize to a friend, or ask for advice from someone that you know. Okay? Here what's important is that you really know this person well and you're probably going to call them by first name. So I'm going to explain exactly how all of this translates into the next step, which is how you begin your letter. So the first step was to identify the type of letter. Second step, the purpose. Now the third step is to open and close the letter correctly. Once you've done steps one and two, you will know how to do this step. Because if it's a formal letter then you start with: "Dear Sir" or "Madam", and you end with: "Yours faithfully". Okay? That's how it is. If it's a semi-formal letter, you will start with something like: "Dear Mr. Brown" or "Dear Ms. Stone" or "Mrs. Stone". "Ms." Is when you don't know if a woman is married or not, or if she's just a modern woman. And you end the semi-formal letter with something like: "Yours sincerely". Okay? What we're trying to do is to match up the formality of the situation with these terms that we're using. Okay? The opening and closing salutations they're called, these are called. All right? Next is the informal one.

Is the IELTS Reading section very challenging for you? Can't finish all the readings and questions before the time is up? The goal of this lesson is to help you finish the test on time without compromising your understanding of the readings. Learn how to read less while answering more questions correctly. After watching, make sure to do the quiz to test your understanding. Good luck on your test! https://www.engvid.com/ielts-3-reading-strategies/ https://www.GoodLuckIELTS.com/ https://www.writetotop.com/ WATCH NEXT IELTS Writing: The 3 Essay Types https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ-Vyqxn1To TRANSCRIPT Hi again. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about IELTS. As usual, with IELTS lessons, I will be speaking a little bit faster than normal. It's good for your listening practice. But if you're not taking the IELTS, you can still listen and try to follow us as we go through this section. So, let's begin. Today, I'm going to look at the IELTS reading section. I'm going to look at three different approaches to tackling the IELTS reading section. Students always ask me: "What should I do with the reading? How do I do it? How can I finish on time? How can I answer more questions?" Right? So I'm going to give you three approaches, three different ways to try to do the IELTS. Okay? We're going to look at three different ways. They're completely different from each other. The most important thing I want to tell you before we start: you have to know what works for you. Okay? One of these approaches will work for you; the others may not. Practice all three. If you're comfortable with one and it seems to work for you, and your score seems to be getting better, stick with that one and practice that one. Don't try to do all three each time. Figure out which one works, and just practice that one the most. Okay? The most obvious one and the first one we're going to talk about: read the entire passage, and then tackle the questions. Now, a few things to say, good and bad, about this approach. So, you have 20 minutes, let's say, that you're going to start from the first passage, you're going to do about 17 minutes; the second passage, you're going to spend 20 minutes; the last passage, you're going to spend 23, 24, 25 minutes. So, you have to do this very fast. So: can you read the entire passage and do the questions in that timeframe? Okay? That's the question you must ask yourself. Are you a fast reader? Can you comprehend everything you're reading? How is your vocabulary? Things like this. Some people, they must read everything, from beginning to end, and then go to the questions. But they can also keep; they can retain the information they've read, so when they go to the questions, they know where to go back and look for the answers. Now, the good part about this is that you have all the information in your head once you've read the entire passage. The bad part is that you're going to be reading the passage twice. Okay? Or not the whole passage, but you're going to read big chunks of the passage twice. You'll have read it the first time, you'll go to the questions, and then you'll be reading again to find the answers, because you're looking for specific words now. When you get to the questions, sometimes it's only one word difference from what you read in the passage. So, do I recommend this? Yes and no. If you're a fast reader and you can comprehend, then yes, do that. If you're not a fast reader, then no, don't do this. You'll be wasting too much time and reading more than you need to. What I'm going to do with these two approaches is show you how to read less. So you don't need to read the entire passage; you just need to read the areas that contain the answers to the questions. So, the second approach: go straight to the questions. You look at the question. First of all, understand the type of the question. Is it a multiple choice? Is it a fill-in-the-blank, like a summary? Are you looking for like headings for each paragraph? Are you looking for the title? Etc. Figure out what you're looking for, read the question carefully, pick out the keywords in the question or the key idea in the question, and then scan the passage. Don't read the passage. Just quickly look everywhere for where that information ought to be.

IELTS Writing Task 2 - Analyzing Model Answers for Band 7+ Vocabulary

09:53
In this IELTS Writing Task 2 video lesson, I analyze one of my model essays to try and find some of the “advanced” or “Band 7+” vocabulary that I use. You’ll notice that a lot of the IELTS vocabulary in this model essay comes from simple words, but when put together becomes advanced English. Please subscribe to our YouTube channel for more IELTS content More IELTS Writing Task 2 Lessons: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQKm5R-SeKdN49U0YaLU8C98u2u_ipA1h Contact Lee: http://www.ielts-master.com Model Essay: The government and citizens of a country sometimes have contrasting views about how their country’s progress should be measured. While I agree that economic progress is essential, I believe that other forms of progress are just as important. There are three key reasons why economic growth is considered by governments around the world to be the fundamental metric for national progress. First, a healthy economy results in a more satisfied citizenry as unemployment is lower than during periods of economic unrest. Second, economic progress generates more tax revenue for governments. This in turn allows governments to invest in social services, healthcare, education, military or whatever else they see as necessary. Finally, a strong economy can help a country improve or maintain a country’s international reputation, which allows for more influence and trading power on the global stage. Nonetheless, other forms of progress that exist independent from economic progress can be equally relevant in measuring a country’s success. A country’s adult literacy rate, for example, can be used to measure social equality as well as economic growth potential. This is because literate adults are able to partake in skilled labor and are also likely to pass on their literacy skills to the next generation. Another key measure of progress is how well the country is protecting its natural environment. Regardless of the wealth of a country, it will not have a satisfied and healthy population if the environment is in ruin. Alternatively, the overall happiness of its residents can be an extremely relevant measure of a country’s success. In conclusion, while it is obvious that economic health is a key marker of a country’s success, other educational, environmental, and psychological metrics are equally significant.

Subscribe to the channel for more IELTS listening practice tests. IELTS LISTENING TIPS To help you in your IELTS preparation, here are some tips for the listening test. TIP #1 Take care with spelling. If you spell a word incorrectly, it will be marked as incorrect. TIP #2 Similarly, take care with word endings: if the correct answer is "cats" and you write "cat", your answer will be marked as incorrect. TIP #3 Beware of distractors - this is information put into the recording that is similar to the answer, but is not the answer. For example, if you are listening for someone's date of birth, you might hear a date, but might be for something else. TIP #4 You will be given some time to read the questions before each recording is played. Read the questions very carefully as you will hear each recording only once, so you want to be familiar with the questions before you hear the recording TIP #5 Write down your answers while you listen - you will need to write and listen at the same time. TIP #6 Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything you hear. Listen out for the keywords from the questions and focus on what you need to be listening out for. TIP #7 If you miss a question, don’t dwell on it because you may miss the answer to the next one. So, if you miss one, move on. Tip #8: Make sure you follow the word count in the instructions of each question. For example, if the instructions say “write no more than one word” and you write “the train” instead of “train”, your answer will be marked as incorrect. NOTE: In the IELTS exam, you will have 10 minutes to copy your answers to the official IELTS listening test answer sheet. You can download a copy of the answer sheet here: https://goo.gl/qNzo9Z ABOUT THE IELTS LISTENING TEST IELTS Listening Part 1 is usually an informal dialogue in a social or everyday situation. In this test, it is a telephone conversation where someone is ordering a product. IELTS Listening Part 2 is usually a non-academic monologue. In this test, the recording is of 3 students discussing a research project they must do. IELTS Listening Part 4 is usually a university style lecture. In this test, it is a lecturer giving a talk about Roman trade in the Mediterranean Sea. Day Trading Charts: Line Charts and Bar Charts Explained 📈

05:49
Comparing Line Charts and Bar Charts. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/charts.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! How to read line charts and bar charts. If you’re doing any serious trading it won’t be long before you come across the topic of technical analysis. Technical analysis can be as complicated as you need it to be, but comes out of a very simple idea – showing you how the price of a financial security changes over time so that you can try to predict how it is going to change in the future. When you learn about technical analysis, you’ll have the option of using not just prices but also trading volumes, indicators, oscillators, and other things that have been invented to give you different ways to consider the numbers. But the starting point for all of them is considering how the price changes over time. First let’s look at a line chart. This is a graph with time going horizontally along the bottom, often one day for each notch, and price being shown vertically. For each day the price at the close of the market is plotted, and then the charting software joins up the prices to give you a line that goes up and down, reflecting the price and showing you for instance if the price is in an uptrend or simply staying around the same level. This type of chart is not often used by traders, except in a very general manner perhaps to see the overall trends, as it doesn’t give you much information. The type of chart that was used extensively by traders in the last century is called a bar chart or sometimes an OHLC chart. The letters stand for open, high, low, and close, and you will understand why when you see how a bar chart is drawn. Each day a vertical bar is drawn, starting at the lowest price that the financial security was sold for during the day and going up to the highest price that was paid. Looking at the chart, you will see a short horizontal line sticking out the left and a short horizontal line sticking out to the right. These lines are called tics. The tic to the left is set at the price when the market opened, and the tic to the right is the price at the close of the market. You can see that this method of drawing the chart gives you four times as much information as the line chart, which only showed you the closing price each day. This can be very valuable when you are trading, as you can see how active the market has been and whether there have been any unusual price movements during the day, which would be masked by the line chart which only shows you the finishing value. For instance, even if the price rose steadily day by day, it could do so in many different ways. It could open the lowest price, climb gently, and close at the highest price, and if it did so you would regard it very differently from the case where it opened at a certain level, dipped way down, took off skywards, and then settled back down to just above the opening price. So it’s much more valuable to use a bar chart than a line chart when you are trading and trying to predict the market performance.

IELTS LISTENING TEST 08.07.2017 WITH ANSWERS

Man: Hello, this is Business Nationwide, Daniel speaking, how can I help you? Woman: Hi there, er, I’ve recently started up a small business, and I noticed on your website that you run some courses for people who are starting up. Man: That’s right, we do. We offer two courses which may be of interest to you. Our first course is called ‘Getting Started’. It’s a two–hour evening course, and it runs from 6pm to 8pm. We discuss things like ‘Is starting a business right for me?’, writing a business plan and some of the legal issues. It runs at various locations in the area. Where are you based? Woman: I live in Eastleigh. Man: Eastleigh. So, the closest course to you would be in Handbridge, and the next one is on the 20th March. Woman: Uh-huh, and how much is that. Man: That one is free. Woman: Okay, well it might be worth it. Man: But did you say you’re trading already? Woman: Yes, since about August. Man: Well, you might be better off taking our three-day course – ‘Business Basics’. It’s not free I’m afraid – it’s subsided and costs £80 for the three days, unless you’ve been unemployed in the past six months, in which case it’s just £20. Woman: No, that doesn’t apply to me. Man: Well, it’s well worth the money. The three days cover the essential aspects of running a business. The first day covers legal issues, such as tax, insurance, employment laws and health and safety. The second day covers marketing and pricing, and the third covers accounting and book-keeping. Woman: It sounds useful. Does the ‘Business Basics’ course take place in Handbridge too? Man: Er, let me see. No, it’s not available in Handbridge, I’m afraid. The nearest course to you would be in Renton. There’s one on the 5th March, and another on the 18th April. Woman: Yes, that might be useful. Man: I’ll send out a pack to you if you like, with some details of the courses and also some information about what you need to do to set up and who you need to register with. Woman: Great. Man: Can I take your name? Woman: Yes, it’s Lila Park. Man: Lila? Is that L-A-I-L-A? Woman: NO, L-I-L-A. Man: Lila Park. And your address please? Woman: 39 White Lane, Eastleigh. Man: And have you got an email address? If so, we can send you details of any courses that are happening near you that you might be interested in. Woman: Yes, it’s lila dot park at rainbow dot com Man: Great, well I’ll have the information pack sent out to you today. Woman: Thanks, that’d be great. Man: My pleasure. Bye.

An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing ones’ financial security or life style. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. Hypothetical Performance Disclosure: Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. no representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. for example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of trading losses are material points which can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program which cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all which can adversely affect trading results.

MIGRATING BETWEEN COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES

08:05
MIGRATING BETWEEN COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES More than one hundred years ago, at the time of “The Great War,” it was said that “the sun never sets on the British Empire.” Nearly a quarter of the world, in one way or another, fell under British rule or otherwise was part of the British trading network or Commonwealth. From the Great White North of Canada to the steppes of India, from Australia to South Africa and back again, the reach and influence of the Empire was, in 1914, unparalleled in the annals of history. Today, Britannia has remained a world power, and has survived the ravages of two World Wars and acquiesced to the morality of the era of decolonization, reinventing what it means to be British or part of the Commonwealth while still holding on to those greatest of traditions which make that a title still to be admired here in 2017. But what does this mean for you if you’re looking to immigrate to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or if you’re a British national and looking to leave the Sceptered Isle for a nation among the Commonwealth, or vice versa? Here’s a quick look at the state of immigration in the UK, the British Commonwealth, and how these nations stack up against one another. COMMON RULES FOR COMMONWEALTH IMMIGRATION First, some general notes on the Commonwealth nations and their nationals. It’s important to recognize the distinction here between British national/Commonwealth citizen and British citizen. There are some general immigration benefits for Commonwealth citizens looking to immigrate to fellow Commonwealth nations: As a Commonwealth citizen, you may be entitled to visa-free entry into a fellow Commonwealth nation if the country you’re traveling from is deemed to be in good standing. In addition, some Commonwealth nations make the path to immigration, naturalization, and citizenship easier by allowing you to apply sooner after you’ve arrived than would be the case were you emigrating from a non-Commonwealth nation. Being a Commonwealth citizen has its advantages when it comes to visiting non-Commonwealth nations as well: If your nation does not have an embassy in a nation you’re traveling to, the British embassy or consulate in that nation will fill that void for you. Commonwealth nations can also provide this sort of embassy-related assistance for one another—the Canada-Australia Consular Services Agreement ensures that if Canada is not represented in a nation, the Australian embassy or consulate will service Canadian nationals entering said nation, and vice versa, with the British embassy or consulate then providing assistance if neither Canada nor Australia have a presence in said nation. If you’re a student, you’ll be eligible for the Commonwealth Scholarship. Finally, as a Commonwealth citizen, you are allowed to serve in the British Armed Forces in most capacities if you so choose. IMMIGRATING TO BRITAIN Interested in immigrating back to the Sceptered Isle? Join the club. The United Kingdom is enjoying a huge spike in popularity as an immigration destination, and is rapidly becoming more diverse than ever before. The pound is stronger than the dollar, and the UK is enjoying a period of economic stability and growth. In a post-2000s world, where we’re so conscious of market bubbles and crashes, this makes Britain an attractive immigration destination. The 2012 Olympics went off spectacularly and proved that Britain still has what it takes to put on a show as a world power. This is good news for citizens of Commonwealth Nations or British dependencies looking to immigrate to Britain. As stated, Commonwealth nationals hold an international status within the vestiges of the former British Empire, if not within the UK itself, meaning that, again, the immigration process may be easier for British nationals—a plus at a time when there are so many hundreds of thousands trying to immigrate into the UK. What’s more, you’re likely to have less of a problem with culture shock than other arriving immigrants, as you already somewhat share a common history, language, and culture to a certain extent. It may not sound like much, but when dealing with as much bureaucracy as there is to sift through when it comes to the immigration process, any little advantage helps.
