As you work with Human resources, you’ll decide how to structure your organization, using elements, such as departments, jobs, and positions. These are among the foundational elements that you’ll configure in Human resources. Individual employees are assigned to positions which are associated with jobs. Positions: Positions are an important element of the lower level of an organization hierarchy. A position is an individual instance of a job. For example, the position, “Sales manager (East),” is just one of the positions that is associated with the job, “Sales manager.” Positions exist in a department and are assigned to workers. Position creation and maintenance: - You can view a history of position-related system changes in an easy-to-access list page. - You can create reason codes that your users can select when they create or modify positions. - You can create personnel action types and assign a number sequence to personnel actions. - You can set up workflow so that position additions and changes can require approval. Position duration: Every position has a length of time that the position is effective. This length of time is referred to as duration. For example, summer positions might have duration of May 1, 2017 until August 31, 2017. Worker assignments: When you assign a worker to a position, you fill that position. You can assign workers to multiple positions, but only one worker can be assigned to a position at the same time. Reporting relationships: Positions are important elements of the lower level of an organization hierarchy. In the Position form, you can specify the position that a position reports to. When you assign a worker to a position that reports to another position, you create a reporting relationship between the workers who are assigned to the two positions. For example, position “Accountant-A” reports to position “Accounting Supervisor”. Kim Akers is assigned to position “Accounting Supervisor” and Sanjay Patel is assigned to position “Accountant-A”. This means that Sanjay Patel reports to Kim Akers. If your organization uses a matrix hierarchy or another custom hierarchy, you can set up position hierarchy types and then add reporting relationships to positions for each hierarchy type that you set up. For example, Lori Penor is a general manager at Adventure Works and is assigned to the “General Manager” position. Lori manages the development of a product that is used to clean widgets. Lori requires an accountant to help her with the finances for developing the product. Therefore, she has recruited Sanjay Patel to be her accountant. Sanjay reports directly to Kim Akers, but also works with Lori Penor on his work related to the finances for developing the widget cleaner. For the previous example, you would complete the following tasks to set up the working relationship between Sanjay Patel and Lori Penor: 1. Create a custom position hierarchy type called “Widget” to create a hierarchy that includes positions responsible for working on the widget cleaner product. 2. Assign the General Manager position to be the position that the Accountant-A position reports to in the Widget hierarchy. You can use the position hierarchy to view the reporting structure of positions. If you have multiple position hierarchies, you can view the hierarchy for each hierarchy type in the position hierarchy. Also, you can search for a position by position ID or by the name of the worker who is assigned to the position. The position hierarchy is an organizational hierarchy.

HR is an area that encompasses many of a company's competitive advantages (its people), contains huge portions of a company's cost structure (people again), and is always a source of great risk to an organization. It's no wonder that your CFO should have HR near the top of the list. Managing benefits and related policies is a major source of cost containment. As such, the CFO should play a direct role in the management of health insurance and other employee benefit costs. With regulations and pricing constantly changing, your CFO needs to have strong relationships with experts in this area. Likewise, he or she should have these same kinds of relationships in the areas of work comp, general liability, and other business insurances. These insurance costs are often a huge expense for even the smallest businesses. A strong CFO should help you stay on top of these costs, negotiate the best deals, and design programs to keep costs in line. Small, growing companies will likely face a point where the management of their employees becomes unwieldy. At this point (preferably prior) you really need to take the time to develop an employee handbook, in addition to an HR policies and procedures manual. Your CFO should assist in the development of these documents, along with building and implementing benefit programs, and should have prior experience in these areas. Having well-defined HR policies is very important, and should take into consideration the long-term viability of the company, employee retainment, risk tolerance, productivity concerns, and more. Related to employee retainment, the CFO should be a key contributor in developing a company wage scale. The wage scale should establish pay ranges for employees in various positions and seniority. It should be based on local and industry cost and wage data, as well as the company's unique circumstances. Again, the CFO must keep an eye on long-term company viability while also offering wage potential to attract quality talent. your CFO should be invaluable in developing incentive or bonus programs that align employees with the company's goals. A properly constructed incentive program can motivate all levels of employees to new levels, really bolstering performance and profitability. There are many variables and possibilities to consider when designing effective HR programs, and your CFO should be well-versed in the methods in addition to having strong relationships with specialized experts in the various areas. An example of an area of responsibility for a job titled “Accountant” might be “Financial reporting for Product A”.

Mark James is Honeywell's senior vice president of human resources and communications, a position he was appointed to in November 2007. Honeywell is a $37 billion diversified technology and manufacturing company serving customers in aerospace, automation control, automotive and chemical industries. A member of Honeywell's senior leadership team, he is responsible for leading global human resources strategy and programs for the company's 120,000 employees in more than 100 countries. This includes organization and talent development, staffing, learning, compensation and benefits, labor and employee relations, HR services and the Six Sigma training organization. His role also includes leading the company's procurement, communications and aviation functions. Prior to this position, Mr. James was vice president of human resources and communications for Honeywell Aerospace, a position he held since October 2004, leading HR strategies for the $12 billion business and its more than 40,000 employees. He joined Honeywell in February 2000 as director of human resources for federal manufacturing & technologies in Kansas City and was promoted in March 2001 to vice president of human resources for aerospace electronic systems in Phoenix. Prior to Honeywell, Mr. James held a variety of human resources positions with Iomega, JM Family Enterprises (Toyota distributor), AT&T and Lockheed Martin. Mr. James holds a master's degree from the University of Utah in public administration with an emphasis in human resources, and a business administration degree in personnel and industrial relations from Utah State University. Mark is a designated Senior Professional in Human Resources, a Certified Compensation Professional and a Certified Benefits Professional. He is a certified Six Sigma Leadership Black Belt.
