I was out on maternity leave with my second son and I received a phone call, unfortunately it was a call letting me know that they had eliminated the position that I was in. I was pretty shocked, didn't see it coming, I was a strong performer, I hadn't been thinking about like, my career, in quite a, quite some time. So I went on this whole exploration, like "What am I going to do next?" I just started like combing through different job boards and job descriptions and trying to figure out how can I translate all these skills that I've had for the last 15 years in this industry into other things, new things, innovative things. I want to be different. So I set a goal for myself. I'm like, two years from now, I want to be in a new position, something I love doing. So I decide that maybe I need to get, I need to figure out if HR or some component thereof is for me. So I found the UW certificate program while I was going through all of this exploration, and I thought "Perfect." It was just enough to get a sense for it get some credentialing, and also help me build my network in a space that I felt like I wanted to go in, and that I was able to then transition into. Was one of several doors that opened this new pathway for me to find this job that I absolutely love. It was part of the puzzle that I had been looking for, to help me figure out, you know, what I wanted to do next, and without it, I probably wouldn't be here today. It helped me reinforce that and realize, "Okay. This isn't just a pipe dream. I'm going to go for it."

[Jessica] Well I was really drawn to the nonprofit management certificate because it was that umbrella program, because I wasn't quite sure where I wanted to move forward in my career next. [Fo-Ching] I really needed a framework within which to kind of compare myself and do bench marking and kind of find out the best practices of how to run a nonprofit organization. [Jessica] And so I knew with the nonprofit management certificate, I could touch on human resources, governance, volunteer management, leadership development, fundraising and marketing in just one year. [Cory] We talk about it as a survey course. So, it's very comprehensive in terms of the range of topics that are covered. [Jessica] Our first quarter was focused on governance and human resources, financial reading, trying to get kind of a sense of how nonprofits run from the most basic level. Winter quarter was leadership management. It was the most inward looking quarter; you really focused on yourself as a leader and what kind of team you work best with and how you really represent yourself in a group setting. And then spring was marketing and fundraising. [Cory] So we try to infuse all of the courses with grounding and the latest thinking, the latest research and writing on the sector. But it's always connected to, to the ground, to real life examples in nonprofit organizations. [Jessica] The case study with the nonprofit that we followed throughout the year was definitely the most practical way of applying the information we were learning very theoretically. [Cory] All of our instructors either currently work at nonprofit organizations or work in a consulting capacity and their clients are almost all nonprofit organizations. [Fo-Ching] It was evident to me that they were all passionate and care deeply about the nonprofit work that they're doing. [Cory] I would say without a doubt the certificate program has helped many folks advance their careers in the sector -- either folks who are currently in the sector, it's helped them to be prepared for a position of greater responsibility, or folks who are the sector jumpers who are moving from the for-profit or the public sector. [Jessica] Spring quarter, I knew where I needed to go in my job search, and I had the fantastic mentors and teachers who are there along my side during the entire job search. And I wouldn't have been in this job I am now without the references and the recommendations I got from my professors. [Fo-Ching] I started Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation from scratch. The certificate program was great in the sense that it gave me an idea, bullet points and best practices about how to run an effective organization. [Jessica] The relationships I've built in the classroom are gonna continue on the rest of my professional life, and my teachers are my mentors now -- the people who I'm going to have coffees with and talking about everyday challenges of working in a nonprofit sector. [Cory] I continue to believe that it's one of the best values in terms of additional learning and professional development in the nonprofit sector in the Pacific Northwest.
