EXCHANGING & WITHDRAWING CASH WHEN TRAVELLING | BASICS OF BACKPACKING #5

04:32
Let's talk money in today's episode! In particular exchanging currencies and withdrawing cash abroad without the massive fees! It is a good idea to exchange a small amount of cash before you leave so you have some funds for taxi’s or a cheeky coffee at the airport. But don’t take too much cash, only enough to cover your first couple of days. Don’t carry anymore than you are willing to lose! Using ATM machines abroad can vary. Some countries will have next to zero ATM machines which will accept foreign cards, like Japan, which is why it’s good to have cash on you till you find somewhere to withdraw. Taking a travel card is a good idea which is where you pre-load money onto the card and spend it in different locations across the world. Some Travel Cards may freeze the exchange rate or have it flexible so you get the best exchange rate when you spend! Using your home bank card is a popular option but can incur some hefty fee’s. Here are some tips: If you need to withdraw cash then don’t take out $50 at a time. Cover yourself for a few days and try not to use EFTPOS machines! --------------------- Important stuff --------------------- Support me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/psychotraveller DON'T FORGET TO BECOME A LITTLE PSYCHO: http://goo.gl/GnWOIt --------------------- Social media is sexy --------------------- Facebook: http://goo.gl/K0u8pa Twitter: http://goo.gl/FsbWJR Pinterest: http://goo.gl/qgRD4v Instagram: http://goo.gl/abzups SnapChat: @PsychoTraveller My blog: http://goo.gl/5zP0dG Business email: psychotraveller22 at gmail dot com --------------------- What I Film My Videos With --------------------- GoPro Hero 4 Silver: http://goo.gl/9AE4Yu Sony A5100: http://goo.gl/Fo1DDY --------------------- Some Sexy Stuff Right Here!! --------------------- Get $30 off your first stay on Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com.au/c/aford34?s=8 Get $10 off GoPro accessories with the code “PsychoTraveller” here: http://www.sandmarc.com/ (Above are affiliate codes/links which mean if you sign up/buy a product, at no extra cost to you, I make a little bit of money to help me maintain my channel and blog!)

As Fees for Using Cards Overseas, BestForeignExchange.com Advises Using Cash Instead

00:06
As Metro Bank Announces Fees for Using Cards Overseas, BestForeignExchange.com Advises Using Cash Instead Metro Bank has recently announced that a fee will be introduced for using their cards overseas effective from 18th March 2014. Now all banks charge a fee for overseas use of debit and credit cards. This added cost can affect holiday makers when paying for items abroad. PRWeb (London) 4th February 2014 In line with other banks in the UK, now Metro Bank has announced that it will start charging a fee for using its cards overseas. With this announcement, all banks now impose a fee or a monthly charge for using their cards on holiday and a higher exchange rate on foreign currency than the high street. "We have found that a lot of our customers are getting stung by high fees when using their cards on holiday. With Metro Bank's recent announcement, customers of all major banks will now face these charges," says Trevor Samuel, Marketing Manager of BestForeignExchange.com. There are many reasons for travellers to avoid using their debit or credit cards while on holiday. Paying by cash is more beneficial and cheaper than using your bank card overseas. South Wales Argus proposed a New Year resolution for travellers "not to pay more to pay" by using plastic. There are several reasons to use cash instead of plastic: 1. Most card issuers charge a cash withdrawal fee for using your card in overseas ATMs. The fees can vary from 1% to 3% based on your bank. This can increase the overall cost of holidays. 2. You will not be aware of exchange rates for your foreign currency purchases until you receive your bank statement at the end of the month and usually the card issuer keeps a margin of over 2.75% on top of the wholesale exchange rates. The Office of Fair Trade says "For all types of card transactions, an 'optional issuer fee' may be added to the wholesale exchange rate. This exchange rate fee typically ranges from 2.75% to 2.99%." 3. When using a prepaid card, you will be left with limited options to top up from a different service provider despite adverse exchange rates. There is no option to switch over to another card for free unlike buying currencies with the best exchange rate on a given day. 4. Unlike cash, it may not be practical to pay for small expenses such as taxi fares or meals using a card. According to MSN Money, "Apart from the risk of having your card stolen, restaurants are one of those rare places where someone actually walks away with your card and you don't see them for a few minutes. It is much better to use cash when dining out." 5. Your ability to control your expenses is limited when using cards. While it is easy to run up huge bills on your card, it can be much harder to repay it and this can take a considerable amount of time. "For these reasons and the fact that Metro Bank has joined the slew of banks charging for using cards on holiday, we recommend using a reputable foreign exchange company like bestforeignexchange.com," said Trevor Samuel. About Best Foreign Exchange.com Owned and operated by Thomas Exchange Global, BestForeignExchange.com offers the most competitive exchange rates in London and customers that reserve currencies online will be assured the same exchange rate until close of business on the particular day despite any adverse fluctuations. They stock the widest range of foreign currencies in London with over 120 types of foreign bank notes. All foreign currency buy/sell transactions are free of any commission or charges. US Tourists Enjoy Weak Euro Currency Tourists from the U.S were enjoying, making their dollars go further while they holiday in Europe, with the euro and dollar nearly trading at parity. In the Greek Capital Athens, holidaymakers visiting the acropolis archaeological site said they would take advantage of the favourable exchange rate. U.S investment bank Goldman Sachs was the latest major bank to slash its forecasts for the euro on Friday, predicting it will plunge through parity with the dollar within a year and hit a new record low by the end of 2017. Lifestyle Finance: 4 First World Problems We Face When Getting Your Desired Foreign Exchange Rates

00:50
Getting the foreign exchange you like may not be that difficult afterall! By integrating technology with the right financial product, Singaporeans can become smarter travellers. Today’s travellers have access to more information than ever before. We use this to get the best hotel deals, book the cheapest flights, dine at the top places and enjoy the best shopping experience. To achieve this, we spend a lot of time researching everything we need to know before our holiday. We even compare and buy travel insurance to protect our holiday plans from any unforeseen circumstances that may ruin it. However, one area that Singaporeans tend to overlook when we plan for our trips is foreign currency exchange. For a large majority of us, the changing of our Singapore Dollar (SGD) for the foreign currency we need usually happens just a few days before our departure. U.S Dollars: A guide and brief history of the U.S Dollar currency

01:53
Welcome to the Compare Holiday Money guide to U.S. Dollars. The US Dollar is the official currency of the United States of America- and nine other countries. The price of some of the worlds most traded goods such as gold and other precious metals, wheat and other agricultural goods, oil and energy products are all quoted in US dollars internationally. The first dollar coins were minted in 1792 and were very much like the Spanish dollars minted in South America at the time. It was specified the coins had to be 371 grains of pure silver, that’s around 24 grams or one ounce. One ounce of silver is worth a lot more than one dollar today! There are lots of ways of buying your US dollars and all currency suppliers sell it so there is loads of competition to offer the best deals. You can find out more about the currency and check out the very latest exchange rates and deals on the US dollar page at Compare Holiday Money! Take the quiz: https://www.engvid.com/real-english-vocabulary-money-prices/ WATCH NEXT: 1. 50 ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE WHAT YOU SEE, FEEL, HEAR, SMELL, and TASTE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjKCXBHvMQw&index=12&t=0s&list=PLpRs5DzS7VqpcTS7hXJU4ARPwSETGI1gy 2. 8 WAYS TO ASK 'CAN I?' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVUi_vcq7b8&index=22&t=0s&list=PLpRs5DzS7VqpcTS7hXJU4ARPwSETGI1gy TRANSCRIPT Hello, there, and welcome back to engVid. In today's lesson we are going to have ten words that come from the world of banking and business, but have an everyday function; that have a function if you are a holidaymaker and are looking at exchanging money, for example, or just going to another place and using money. Let's face it - we've all got to use it. So, first word today: "rate". There's a couple of different meanings of this word. It can mean the cost of something; or used as a verb: "What do you think of something?" Let's have some practical examples. "What is your rate for...?" Or: "Give me your best rate." What we're... We're thinking here is... Is sort of price; cost. "What is your best rate? I want your best rate." Particularly if you go to a country where haggling is more of a norm, then you're going to be trying to negotiate. Here in the UK things tend to be... there tends to be a set price for certainly things in a shop. "How would you rate...?" So: "How would you rate the service provided? What do you think of it?" Moving on to our second word: "commission". Okay? This word, if we're thinking of a slice... You know, a whole pizza, and there is a middle man... So, for example, I'm booking a hotel in India and I have someone there who is doing the booking for me, then he's going to take a small slice of the pizza and eat it for himself, and the rest of the pizza will go to the hotel. Metaphor; obviously we're talking about money. A practical example of "commission": "We charge 0% commission." Let's put this into another context. Let's say I'm going to Spain and I want some euros so that I can have some money there, I go along to the sort of money exchange, and they say: "We charge 0% commission." That's great. Just be warned that their rates may be not so friendly; they're going to make their money from the rate, not the commission. Next word: "charge". Now, this can be both a noun and a verb. "Are there any extra charges?" Okay? Say I'm paying for a hotel in Spain: "Are there any extra charges?" Taxes, for example. Used as a verb: "What do you charge? What do you charge?" Or: "My charge is..." Okay? If you're saying what you'd like to be paid for a day's work, for example. "Fee". This is a noun. Again, it relates to payment. "My fee is..." Or: "The fee for this is..." Or: "We do charge a fee of..." Okay? Saying we're still at the money exchange: "We do charge a fee of..." All right. "Cost" and "price", this, relating to amount of money. "So the overall cost for changing 100 pounds into euros is..." Or... "So the overall cost for 100 euros is 80 pounds." Okay? "Cost". Next words: "transfer". So, a word that may pop up in your science textbook; it's really relating to this idea of change, and it can be used both as a noun and as a verb. We're going off on this holiday to Spain. "I just received a transfer from my friend." That means they changed money from their account into my account. Well, hey, off to the beach. Pina colada for me. Or: "I made my transfer..." Let's say, for example, that I was flying from London to Paris; from Paris to Barcelona - I don't know why I would because you could fly straight, but let's just pretend: "transfer" is getting the changing flight. So, it's making sure that when you're in Paris, you get onto that change; that next flight - the change of flight. So, there I am in Spain. Now there's been a new development - a plot development because I have just had a "cut" in my salary. Now, "cut" means something taken off. So I now have less money that I am being paid each month. Because of this, I am going to need to make a "cutback". "Cutback" is a noun; means a reduction. I'm going to need to make some cutbacks in my spending. Now, you can also use this as a phrasal verb. For example: "I will need to cut back..." […]

Language 2 Official Languages 1.Chinese, (Spoken Cantonese) 2. English In the major urban districts, most residents will speak English but Cantonese is the local language If you think you’re planning to learn a little Cantonese before you go… it’s not easy… it has nine tones. 8. Shopping Shops often stay open late… none of this European 6pm closing time… think 9 or 10pm closing times for most shops and malls 9. Food: Cantonese Food And it’s all about sharing, portions are big and made for big groups Dim sum originated here in southern China and means “touch the heart”. These tiny bites of goodness were created as snack food for travellers and today are an essential part of local culture. Dim Sum Hong Kong Milk Tea Dai Pai Dong, Fast Food Noodle Shops, are common sites in Hong Kong offering an inexpensive bowl of noodles for around HK$20 and free tea Bones -- yes, lots of the local food has bones it. At the casual restaurants you can just put the bones on the table. At a fancier restaurant use the saucer plate beneath your bowl Tea -- Need a refill for your teapot? Turn the lid upside down. rs currency Watch my video rs currency and learn about the Indian Rupee currency. The central bank in India is called the Reserve Bank of India. The INR is a managed float, allowing the market to determine the exchange rate. As such, intervention is used only to maintain low volatility in exchange rates. The Indian Rupee is the currency in India (IN, IND). The symbol for INR can be written Rs, IRs, and ₨. The Indian Rupee is divided into 100 paise. I use xe.com an online currency converter and calculator. The rupee is the common name for the currencies of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives, Indonesia (as the rupiah), and formerly those of Burma and Afghanistan. Historically, the first currency called "rupiya" was introduced around 900 BCE by mahajnapadas.
