7. Efficient Markets

01:07:44
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) Initially, Professor Shiller looks back at David Swensen's guest lecture, in particular with respect to the Sharpe ratio as a performance measure for investment strategies. He emphasizes the empirical difficulty to measure the standard deviation, specifically for illiquid asset classes, and elaborates on investment strategies that manipulate the Sharpe ratio. Subsequently, he focuses on the Efficient Markets Hypothesis. This theory states that markets efficiently incorporate all public information, which consequently renders beating the market impossible. For example, technical analysis fails to provide powerful, short-run profit opportunities. A consequence of the Efficient Markets Hypothesis is that stock prices follow a Random Walk, as innovations to the stock price must be solely attributable to news. Professor Shiller contrasts the behavior of a Random Walk with that of a First-Order Autoregressive Process, and concludes that the latter statistical process matches the reality of the stock market more closely. This conclusion, combined with the evidence that investment managers like David Swensen are capable of consistently outperforming the market leads Professor Shiller to the conclusion that the Efficient Markets Hypothesis is a half-truth. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Are markets efficient?

42:26
review.chicagobooth.edu | Do market prices generally reflect all available information? Or are they prone to bubbles? On this episode of The Big Question, two members of the Chicago Booth faculty—Nobel laureates Eugene F. Fama and Richard H. Thaler—discuss how markets behave (and misbehave). Along the way they discuss value stocks versus growth stocks, the existence of economic bubbles, and the curious case of the CUBA Fund.

Myth BUSTED: ETFs and Market Efficiency

03:09
The Myth: Everyone is piling into ETFs, and that makes stock markets less efficient. The argument: The more people invest through indexes and ETFs, the fewer people there are scrutinizing the fundamentals of stock prices to figure out if individual stocks are cheap or expensive. That must make it easier to pick stocks, right? It’s a catchy idea that sounds reasonable, except it’s completely wrong! ------------------------ Visit PWL Capital: https://www.pwlcapital.com/Montreal Follow PWL Capital on: - Twitter: https://twitter.com/PWLCapital - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PWLCapital - LinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/company/105673 Follow Peter Guay on - Twitter: https://twitter.com/PWLPete - LinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-guay-cfa-7608663/ Channel management, content strategy & production by Truly Social Inc. http://trulysocial.ca

Passive Investing Theory Part 3: Market Efficiency

03:58
http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing Part Three of a Four-Part Series We've called this series Passive Investing Theory, but the passive approach is actually based less on theory than on mathematical fact. One of the key discoveries in its evolution was made by a mathematician - born in this street in Birmingham in 1822 - who had no interest in investing whatsoever. His name was Sir Francis Galton, and the discovery in question is the "wisdom of the crowd" - the way in which the view of a group of people is generally more accurate than the view of an individual group member. Related to it is "regression to the mean" - the tendency of distributions to collect around the mean - or average - point. Proponents of passive investing say both phenomena are observed in global stock markets. In simple terms, millions of investors independently estimate the value of a particular stock by agreeing on a price. The Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek attached particular significance to prices, which for him were the result of the combined wisdom of every market participant. In his Nobel laureate lecture in 1974, Hayek said: "We are only beginning to understand how subtle and efficient is the communication mechanism we call the market." Building on Hayek's insight, Eugene Fama, an economist at the University of Chicago, developed what he called the Efficient-Market Hypothesis in the early 1960s. There are three different versions of the Efficient-Market Hypothesis. The "Weak" form asserts that all historic market data are fully reflected in the price of a particular stock. In other words, technical analysis of past trends and so on is of no use in predicting future price movements. The "Semi-strong" form asserts that all publicly available information is fully reflected in the price, i.e. fundamental analysis of a stock's intrinsic value is of no use to a speculative investor. The "Strong" form asserts that all information is fully reflected in the price. In that case, not even insider information is of benefit. Many have questioned the details of Fama's analysis. And even among those who advocate passive investing, there's debate as to how efficient certain markets are. But the essential truth of Fama's theory remains. Indeed, now that so much information is made freely available - and at the same time - there's an argument for saying that some markets are more efficient than they've ever been. Forms of Market Efficiency | Portfolio Management (FINC201)

06:46
http://goo.gl/eApOK6 for more free video tutorials covering Portfolio Management. The efficient market hypothesizes that a financial market is what recognized as informationally efficient. In this video, 3 forms of market efficiency are demonstrated in greater details. Market efficiency suggests that prices reflect certain information related to asset pricing and that it is therefore not possible to earn abnormally very high average returns using said information. The conclusion is like that as new information arrives randomly, prices will change randomly. Moving on, the video shows how in a ‘weak’ form of market information are reflected by all past price and trading volume information ruling out it to a technical analysis. Next, it explains how fundamental analysis is ruled out because of reflecting all public information on a ‘semi-strong’ form of market. Later, it does analysis on ‘strong’ form of market where information are held privately and draw the conclusion that in real life ‘semi-strong’ form of market is solely best.

Market Efficiency | Why Does Undervalued Stock Return to its Fair Value ?!?!

04:14
Market Efficiently theory amounts to the belief that hard work, superior insight, and good judgement - the keys to success in the real economy - are ineffectual for the investor in public markets. It tells the investor: hard work and clear thinking doesn't help here, for now you are in a special place where the quaint rules of Main Street do not apply. Here all is mystery; your fate is controlled by forces you can never understand. "But", say the masters of the theory, "We understand. Follow us". Then one day it becomes clear that the masters do not understand, and panic reigns ==================================================== ➤Is Stock Market Efficient: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGgAsiQGt4M&t=113s ➤Security Analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuRVx5iQvyA ➤The intelligent Investor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_25KuECJos&t=182s ==================================================== market efficiency | efficient market hypothesis | investing | stock market | market analysis | penny stocks | stock charts | investing in stocks | stocks to invest in | investing for dummies | stock market for dummies | investment opportunities | buy stocks | investment bonds | investing money | stock trading | free stock trading | best investments | stock market analysis | stock research

Understanding Short Selling | by Wall Street Survivor

What is short selling? Join our March Trading Contest for your chance at over $8000 in prizes: https://app.wallstreetsurvivor.com/registerto/MarchMarketMoversReport?utm_source=MarketMoversReport&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=MarchContest Most people think of investing as buying a stock (or other asset) and making money when its price goes up - but it’s also possible to make a profit when a stock price goes down. This process is called short selling (or shorting). Short selling isn’t all peaches and cream. There are opportunities for high returns, but as usual, these come with high risks. The big risk here is that there is no limit to your losses. When you buy a stock, you can only lose the amount that you invested. But when you short, your losses are infinite because there is theoretically no end to how high a stock’s price can rise. Short selling isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of time and research, and a desire for high risks and high returns. Short selling is primarily used for speculator looking to make a profit when the market goes down or investing looking to hedge their position. Predictability of Asset Returns & the Efficient Market Hypothesis Part 3/3

26:15
Sim Kee Boon Institute Lecture Series. By Professor M Hashem Pesaran, University of Cambridge and USC This paper is concerned with empirical and theoretical basis of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH). It begins with an overview of the statistical properties of asset returns at different frequencies (daily, weekly and monthly), and considers the evidence on return predictability, risk aversion and market efficiency. The paper then focuses on the theoretical foundation of the EMH, and show that market efficiency could co-exist with heterogeneous beliefs and individual irrationality so long as individual errors are cross-sectionally weakly dependent in the sense. The paper also considers if market inefficiencies can be exploited for profit.

Lionel Robbins Memorial Lectures 2010 - Market Efficiency and Rationality...

01:30:37
Lionel Robbins Memorial Lectures - Market Efficiency and Rationality: Why Financial Markets are Different Speaker: Lord Turner This event was recorded on 12 October 2010 in Old Theatre, Old Building Lord Turner will deliver the 2010 Lionel Robbins Memorial Lecture Series, running for three consecutive evenings (11/12/13 October). The overall theme of the 3 lectures is Economics after the Crisis. Amid the financial crash there was much talk of a crisis of capitalism and the need for a revolution in economics. Two years on much work is in hand to reform global financial regulation, but it is not clear that the crisis will produce change as radical as initially supposed. Adair Turner will argue, however, that the crisis should provoke us to think deeply about the conventional wisdom of the last several decades in which economic growth maximisation is the clear objective of economic policy, and market liberalisation, including in financial markets, the universally applicable means.

The Future of Airplanes

Planes will change a lot in the next 50 years. This is look at the developments in airplane technology that are likely in the future of aviation. This is the future of flight. With the first all-electric twin-engine, self-powered plane successfully crossing the English Channel this month, and the ongoing effort of the Solar Impulse team to become the first completely solar-powered aircraft to fly around the world, the amount of innovation targeting the aviation industry is eye-opening. Within the next year, unmanned, solar-powered drones like the Silent Falcon will hit the commercial UAV market. The Joby Aviation S2 electric is a proposed Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft that could be five times as efficient as a conventional personal airplane. Airbus’ two passenger version of the E-Fan will use on-board lithium batteries to power two electric engines. The Aeroscraft ML868 could lead a comeback of giant airships. The 770 foot-long behemoth can carry 200 tons with cargo bays larger than any current air, truck or rail transport vehicle. Aerion’s AS2 is the first supersonic commercial jet since the Concorde. It will fly at a speed of Mach 1.6. Laminar flow technology and better wing design will reduce drag by 20%. By the middle of the 2020’s we’ll likely see solar powered drones delivering broadband to millions for a fraction of the cost of traditional satellites. Building on the concept of drones and autonomous flying technology, fully-automated planes will take to the skies to revolutionize not just the air cargo delivery industry, but possibly personal air travel as well, much like what’s happening today with driverless cars. By 2030, plant-based fuels should account for 30% or more of an airlines’ fuel consumption. Airbus’ hybrid commercial airliner will emit barely any emissions or noise on takeoff and landing thanks to lithium-air batteries. Boeing and NASA could team to launch a hybrid commercial airliner called SUGAR for Subsonic Ultra-Green, Aircraft Research, which uses two-thirds less fuel than an equivalent sized aircraft from 2015. Traveling 10% slower, but using 70% less fuel than today’s Boeing 737, the D8 Series Double Bubble’s fuselage will provide 20% of its lift. By 2040, we could see the world’s first hydrogen powered commercial flight. The hydrogen would be cryogenically frozen. EAD’s Zero Emission High Supersonic Transport passenger jet, running on biofuel, could cut the more than 6,000 mile flight from Paris to Tokyo to just 2:30 minutes. Like a fighter jet on an aircraft carrier, commercial planes could be catapulted into the air, reducing the length of runways by one-third. As if they were a flock of migrating birds, more intelligent systems could allow aircraft on the same routes to self-organize into a flying patter, reducing wind drag and saving fuel. Six hydrogen engines, a rear engine that doubles as a wind turbine, and solar panels on its roof and wings will propel the zero-emission Progress Eagle, a triple-decker, 800-passenger airplane concept that we could see in production by 2070.

Take the $100M Engine Efficiency Hack Challenge | Auto Expert John Cadogan

30:34
The Oak Ridge study is here: https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2014/03/f8/deer11_edwards.pdf (The first and second law energy balances are on page 20) The NASA methanol steam reformer experiment is here: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19770016170.pdf Modern petrol (gasoline - ‘Murica) engines are about 35 per cent efficient, and modern diesels are - maybe - early 40s. That’s at about peak torque production. In normal road driving conditions - moderate loads and 2000rpm or something - they tend to be less thermodynamically efficient than that. Modern diesels have higher compression, so they’re more efficient than petrols. Petrols can’t tolerate the higher compression because they’re knock-limited. That’s because the compression-ignition thing in a diesel is less about flame front propagation, and more about quasi-spontaneity. It’s easier to understand efficiency using the first law of thermodynamics - which is about the conservation of energy. You can do a whole losses breakdown with the second law, too, but I fear the casualties we suffer will really mount up if we try that. Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tenessee did a breakdown on exactly the distribution of energy losses with a 1.9-litre GM diesel engine, back in 2011. They are world-class brainiacs. (They did the second law version as well. Link in the description. Might need a pair of brown pants for that. #Deadpool.) At normal roadgoing loads, out of 100 per cent of the energy in the fuel, about 26 per cent gets to the crank. And the rest is lost, which doesn’t sound real good. Three-quarters, just blown away. We burn about 30 billion - with a ‘B’ - litres of petrol and diesel, here in Shitsville, annually. This means that more than 20 billion of that gets burned without serving a productive purpose. It doesn’t move anything. Therefore, efficiency is perhaps the most important negative issue for the global dynamics of the human race. Certainly more people should think about it. I’m gunna simplify Oak Ridge’s findings a bit, but here’s where they found the energy goes. So here’s the basic problem, OK: We understand exactly where the losses occur. But there are immense practical barriers to reducing them. The engine loses roughly the same amount of energy essentially through the radiator as it delivers to the crank for forward progress. This heat energy is just totally thrown away. So just eliminate the cooling system, right? Retain the heat. That’s gunna push the piston down harder - because the gasses would be hotter and thus there would be more energetic expansion within the cylinder. Thermal efficiency would skyrocket. For about 60 seconds. Then the elevated operating temperature would melt sundry vital components and destroy your engine. So there’s that. Next, we’re losing quite a lot of energy out the exhaust manifold. Rapidly expanding, kinetically energetic gas is just being ejected. You can drive a turbocharger with that. In fact, the engine tested by Oak Ridge was turbocharged - so the efficiency increase from turbocharging (recovering some waste heat) is represented in those numbers already. Turbos are good at repurposing energy that would otherwise be lost. And this is, of course, why there have never been more turbo cars on the market. The third big loss category is pumping, friction and driving accessories (like the water pump): 21 per cent of energy is lost there. That’s quite significant, so reducing internal friction is a big deal for engine designers. But if you get too enthusiastic with that, engines start to misbehave. And by ‘misbehave’ I mean they burn a lot of oil, or they start to wear out prematurely. And then there’s a customer backlash. Plenty of carmakers have had recent oil consumption backlashes - it’s because of engineering over-enthusiasm of the friction reduction front. My challenge to you is: if you can make just a five per cent improvement to efficiency, you’ll be set for life. Carmakers will queue up to pay you those eight figures. Before knocking on their door, I’d suggest you look at Mazda’s HCCI engine - homogenous charge compression ignition gasoline engine. Ultra-lean. Not knock-limited. Super high compression. Super complex, though. It’s rocket science. Engineering tends to follow the path of least resistance. If there’s a simpler solution, they generally go with that. It’s cheaper. Easier to implement. You now know exactly what you have to target: Do something smart with the waste heat. Smarter than NASA. Design a magic new material doesn’t need a cooling system (unfortunately, there are no new elements left to find…) Eliminate frictional losses. Eliminate inlet and exhaust valves, because driving them is a bastard for efficiency.

2019 - Rule 6 Pinpoint Entry Efficiency in the Money Management Algorithms

02:55
https://capstonetradingsystems.com/products/money-management-algorithms-1 In this video we discuss Rule 6 of the Money Management Algorithms so that you can manage the Equity Curve of your trading system. Rule 6 works on entry efficiency with the Pinpoint Entry Algorithm. Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money than can be lost without jeopardizing ones' financial security or life style. Only risk capital should bused for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. Hypothetical Performance Results Have Many Inherent Limitation, Some Of Which Are Described Below. No Representation Is Being Made That Any Account Will Or Is Likely To Achieve Profits Or Losses Similar To Those Shown. In fact, There Are Frequently Sharp Differences Between Hypothetical Performance Result And The Actual Results Subsequently Achieved By Any Particular Trading Program. One Of The Limitations Of Hypothetical Performance Results Is That They Are Generally Prepared With The Benefit Of Hindsight. In Addition, Hypothetical Trading Does Not Involve Financial Risk, And No Hypothetical Trading Record Can Completely Account For The Impact Of Financial Risk Of Actual Trading. For Example, The Ability To Withstand Losses Or To Adhere To A Particular Trading Program In Spite Of Trading Losses Are Material Points Which Can Also Adversely Affect Actual Trading Results. There Are Numerous Other Factors Related To The Markets In General Or To The Implementation Of Any Specific Trading Program Which Cannot Be Fully Accounted For In The Preparation Of Hypothetical Performance Results And All Which Can Adversely Affect Trading Results. These Performance Tables And Results Are Hypothetical In Nature And Do Not Represent Trading In Actual Accounts.

The Future of Laboratory Automation: Speed, Efficiency, and Patient Safety

54:17
Clinical laboratory automation is continuing to evolve and improve to the benefit of laboratories that are purchasing automation. Faster systems that improve laboratory productivity are available -- both for specific activities (task targeted automation) and for total laboratory automation systems. Machine vision systems are being developed to replace tedious human inspections for parameters such as tube size and type, specimen volume, presence and levels of interfering substances, and mislabeled specimens. These automated quality inspections are anticipated to further improve patient safety. Charles Hawker, PhD, MBA, FACB
