Resource Capacity Planner - Excel Template - Team Capacity (Hours) Planning

16:41
In this article, we will be taking up monthly capacity planning for a team. We will be using the Resource Capacity Planner Excel Template in this exercise. (Link: https://indzara.com/product/resource-capacity-planner-excel-template/) SCENARIO: We are responsible for planning our team’s capacity every month. We need to have a realistic view of how much work can be done by our team next month, taking into account the availability of each of our team members during the month. This will allow us to commit to our leadership on deliverables’ scope and if needed ask for more resource or to reduce the deliverables. Resource Capacity Planner Excel template is helpful in understanding the available resource capacity, comparing with demand and identifying surplus/deficit capacity by skill groups. The template takes the resource availability, holidays, weekends, overtime and vacation data to calculate capacity. Then, based on your input demand data, it can calculate the surplus/deficit capacity. In addition, you can generate an employee availability report. It can be used in different environments. For example, a manager leading a team can use this to plan capacity of his team every month. A project manager who is working on a multi-month long project can plan the resource capacity for the entire duration. This can also be used outside corporate environments wherever you want to compare demand vs capacity. Forecasting and Managing Groundwater Resources Using InSAR

14:44
2014 Fall Meeting Section: Union Session: New Frontiers in Ecosystem, Solid Earth, Cryosphere, and Natural Hazards Title: Forecasting and Managing Groundwater Resources Using InSAR Authors: Zebker, H A*, Stanford Univ, Stanford, CA, United States Knight, R J, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, United States Chen, J, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, United States Abstract: Groundwater management is highly dependent on the type and quality of field data available describing a given aquifer system. Our increasing reliance on groundwater, especially as traditional surface supplies continue to be overexploited due to rising population and standard of living, requires that we better understand the state of our subsurface supplies and how to best manage them. The dense spatial and temporal variability of subsidence provided by time series InSAR allows us to constrain the extent of an aquifer, its storage coefficient, estimates of hydraulic head, and hydraulic conductivity. We present examples of these parameters associated with groundwater systems in the San Luis Valley, CO, and the Central Valley area of California, as observed by several spaceborne radar systems and validated by comparison with field data. Groundwater is one component of a water system, which includes surface supplies and all of the various sources and end uses of water in a particular area. Confined aquifers remain the most difficult components of a full water system to characterize and properly manage, as they lie deep underground and are hidden from direct observation. We show that observing subtle deformations of the surface elevations on the order of mm to cm yield important constraints on the underlying aquifer and its hydraulic properties, because variations in the surface height expresses changes in water pressure below. The fundamental relation between pressure and stress resulting in changes in hydraulic head yields a simple linear relationship between deformation Δb, hydraulic head Δh, and skeletal storage coefficient: Sk = Δb / Δh, so that measuring deformation everywhere above an aquifer over time yields change in head. Using InSAR-observed temporal response of the head (deformation) to changes in forcing by water sources and sinks, and applying the one dimensional diffusion equation resulting from Darcy’s Law and the continuity relation allows us to estimate conductivity in the reservoir. This is important in order the supplement the usually sparse geologic knowledge describing the shape of the various layers in the aquifer system and their compressibility. These tools point toward an approach for forecasting future head levels. Cite as: Author(s) (2014), Title, Abstract U14A-04 presented at 2014 Fall Meeting, AGU, San Francisco, Calif., 15-19 Dec. Time Series Prediction

11:02
Time series is the fastest growing category of data out there! It's a series of data points indexed in time order. Often, a time series is a sequence taken at successive equally spaced points in time. In this video, I'll cover 8 different time series techniques that will help us predict the price of gold over a period of 3 years. We'll compare the results of each technique, and even consider using a learning technique. From Holts Winter Method to Vector Auto Regression to Reinforcement Learning, we've got a lot to cover here. Financial Forecasting using Tensorflow.js (LIVE)

51:47
Can we use convolutional neural networks for time series analysis? It seems like a strange use case of convolutional networks, since they are generally used for image related tasks. But in recent months, more and more papers have started using convolutional networks for sequence classification. And since stock prices are a sequence, we can use them to make predictions. In this video, i'll use the popular tensorflow.js library to test out a prediction model for Apple stock. I'll also talk about how recurrent networks work as background. This is my first proper live stream in a year. Get hype! Code for this video: https://github.com/llSourcell/Financial_Forecasting_with_TensorflowJS Please Subscribe! And like. And comment. Climate Forecasting for Renewable Energy: CLIM-RUN FP7 project

04:37
Wind and solar power generation is directly affected by weather, which is known to vary considerably over space and time. When planning and operating these renewable systems, there is therefore a large uncertainty in the amount of power that will be generated over future timescales. This is particularly true at climate timescales, defined here as the "behaviour" of weather over relatively long periods of time: wind speed or solar power generation is rarely the same from one month or season within a given year, to the same month or season the following year. Likewise, there can be a considerable variation in power generation from one full year or decade to the next. The uncertainty of power variability over time is known as climate risk. Probabilistic climate forecasts aim to provide robust information of future wind and solar resource variability, including extremes, over climate timescales, to minimise the uncertainty of future renewable power generation. By understanding the expected changes in these resources and the impact on wind and solar power generation, improved, proactive and anticipatory adaptation decisions can be made to manage climate-related risks within renewable power planning and operation strategies.

HR Basics: Human Resource Planning

07:33
HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we explore human resource planning by outlining a three-step strategic process to meet your organization’s human resource needs. Human resource planning is a process that identifies current and future human resources needs for an organization to achieve its goals. Human resource planning should serve as a link between human resource management and the overall strategic plan of an organization. The goals of human resource planning are to ultimately improve organizational outcomes. Human resource planning is used in and for all functional areas of human resource management. Although you might immediately think of workforce planning, human resource planning covers the brood spectrum of functional areas of human resource management. Human resource planning includes figuring out where you are, where you want to go, and how to get there. Using this process, you will develop the core elements of a human resource plan - strategy, goals, and actions. Strategy is an extension of an organization's mission, a bridge between the organization and it’s environment. Goals are a statement of desired outcomes toward which effort is directed, to realize your human resource plan. Actions are the most important things that can be done to reach stated goals. Planning is critical for each functional area of human resource management. Ask these three simple strategic questions – where are we now, where do we want to be, and how can we get there? - to frame your next human resource planning process. Doing so will ensure you develop the right human resource strategy, goals and action items to realize your plan.

Now I should point out that you can pretty much do the same thing with Budget Work. And the approach with Budget Work is actually very similar but we’re going to concentrate here on Budget Costs. So I’m back here at the house build project. This is version 03. If I go to the Resource Sheet you’ll see that currently the Resource Sheet is empty. And in fact there are no costs or resources assigned at all on this project yet. So one thing that I might do very early on in a project like this is prepare a budget. Now this wouldn’t necessarily relate to any very accurate estimate of cost but I might say, for example, well I think that the labor costs are going to be $40,000 and the material costs are going to be $30,000 and the legal costs are going to be $10,000 and so on. So I might come up with some budget figures. And then during the course of the project I’m going to want to see how the project is progressing against my budget. Now rather than do all of those all I’m going to do is take one element and show you how you might deal with one element and then the other elements would be dealt with in an equivalent way. Now one thing that I must make very clear at this point is that you shouldn’t confuse budget costs with baseline cost. A baseline is a copy, a saved copy of a detailed schedule at a point in time. In fact it can be a detailed or perhaps not very detailed schedule, but it’s a copy of the schedule which will include details of start dates, end date, costs, etcetera, whatever has been added at that point. Budget costs are assigned at the project level. And although we can compare the budget cost with our actual costs in whatever categories we’ve set up it’s not the same as comparing progress, actuals that is, with a baseline. So let’s use as our example a budget cost for services. And by services we mean things like connecting the house to main services and getting an inspection by a local building inspector. So first of all let’s go to the Resource Sheet and we’re going to set up a resource called Service Costs. The type is Cost and I’m also going to create a group. I’ll explain the use of the group in just a moment. Sorry, we couldn't fit the entire video transcription here since YouTube only allows 5000 characters.

Estimating the Value of Improved Distributed PV Adoption Forecasts for Utility Resource Planning

01:00:40
Misforecasting the adoption of customer-owned distributed photovoltaics (DPV) can have operational and financial implications for utilities; forecasting capabilities can be improved, but generally at a cost. This paper informs this decision-space by using a suite of models to explore the capacity expansion and operation of the Western Interconnection over a 15-year period across a wide range of DPV growth rates and misforecast severities. The system costs under a misforecast are compared against the costs under a perfect forecast, to quantify the costs of misforecasting. Using a simplified probabilistic method applied to these modeling results, an analyst can make a first-order estimate of the financial benefit of improving a utility’s forecasting capabilities, and thus be better informed about whether to make such an investment. For example, under our base assumptions, a utility with 10 TWh per year of retail electric sales who initially estimates that DPV growth could range from 2% to 7.5% of total generation over the next 15 years could expect total present-value savings of approximately $4 million if they could reduce the severity of misforecasting to within ±25%. Utility resource planners can compare those savings against the costs needed to achieve that level of precision, to guide their decision on whether to make an investment in tools or resources.

Using Drought Forecasts to Improve Natural Resource Management

52:25
Natural resource managers face increasing challenges in dealing with drought. As competition for water increases between its various uses (water supply, energy demands, ecological services, recreation, and other environmental and ecological needs), our ability to forecast the onset and termination of drought becomes ever more important. This is particularly true given forecasts of the increasing frequency and intensity of drought suggested by climate change models. This talk presents a brief review of history of drought forecasting and its application in resource management. Drought indicators currently in practice are explored as well as emerging indicators. Additionally, the fundamentals of drought planning are reviewed, particularly the challenges of developing robust policies that work well when future conditions are difficult to predict. The challenges in applying these forecasts associated with the forecast accuracy are discussed, as will other limitations. Finally, the potential for improving our ability to predict regional drought in the near future are explored. This webinar was recorded on April 27, 2017 as part of the Climate Change Science and Management Webinar Series, held in partnership by the USGS National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center and the USFWS National Conservation Training Center. ---------- Find this video and thousands more at https://usgs.gov/gallery. Wildfire forecasting—potential tools for community applications

01:05:54
These presentations highlight existing wildfire forecasting tools, especially resources that can be used by communities to aid in preparedness efforts. Speakers discuss existing tools and provide examples of their use in communities or their potential applications if not currently used at the community-level. Ultimately, the use of available forecasting tools may help communities better respond to the threat of wildfires and avoid or minimize potential health impacts. IT Industry Forecast 2015

02:09
You can read up on the 2016 IT Industry Forecast now too: https://www.teksystems.com/en/resources/research/research-library/it-trends/annual-it-forecast-2016 Despite the ebbs and flows of recent years, 2015 seems poised to be a year of relative calm and stability in IT. While expectations for budget increases may not be rising, confidence is building. Just under one half of IT leaders expect their budgets to increase in 2015. And yet 7 in 10 leaders are confident in their ability to satisfy business needs over the next year. While 2014 objectives centered around implementing new IT applications and infrastructure, IT leaders expect that improving operational efficiency and existing infrastructure will be the main objective IT will need to support in 2015. As one might guess from news headlines in 2014, security is the top concern for 2015, continuing its constant rise in impact over the last 3 years. Security is also the leading area for expected spending increases in 2015. Leaders are once again looking to increase headcount in 2015, but how easily will they be able to find the positions they need? IT leaders now see IT Managers and Director level leaders, or “bridge leadership” roles, as taking on new importance. Programmers and developers are still seen as crucially important roles, while simultaneously being the hardest roles to fill. Since salary is one of the main ways to attract and retain talent, it is no surprise that 3 in 4 leaders expect some salary raises in 2015. Security positions, programmers and developers, and software engineers are the most likely to benefit, though other positions may also see raises in the new year. 2015 looks to be a stable, introspective year for IT departments, focusing on security, internal efficiency and retaining important staff members.
