Script: Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy resources; these are coal, oil and natural gas. They were formed from the remains of living organisms millions of years ago and they release heat energy when they are burned. This heat is used to turn water into steam, which is used to turn a turbine, which then drives a generator to generate electricity. There are downsides however, fossil fuels release sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide which lead to acid rain and an increase in global warming. Another form of non-renewable energy is Nuclear. The main nuclear fuels are uranium and plutonium. The nuclei of these large atoms are split in a process called nuclear fission to release a great deal of heat. The heat energy is again used to boil water. The kinetic energy in the expanding steam spins turbines, which then drive generators to produce electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear fuels do not produce carbon or sulphur dioxide. However, they do have the risk of a fault where large amounts of radioactive material could be released into the environment such as the disaster of Chernobyl in 1986.

You will gonna learn about Energy Sources for kids, How we use Energy ( how to save energy ) and a brief understanding about different types of Renewable Energy resources as well as the nonrenewable ones. ► What is energy ? The best definition of energy, that every children should know, is that the Scientists define energy as the ability to do work. Modern civilization is possible because people have learned how to change energy from one form to another and then use it to do work. We use energy to move cars along roads and boats through water, to cook food on stoves, to make ice in freezers, and to light our homes. Energy comes in different forms: Heat (thermal), Light (radiant), Motion (kinetic), Electrical, Chemical, Nuclear energy and Gravitational Energy. People use energy for everything from making a jump shot to sending astronauts into space. There are two types of energy: ( Stored (potential) energy + Working (kinetic) energy ). For example, the food a person eats contains chemical energy, and a person's body stores this energy until he or she uses it as kinetic energy during work or play. Energy sources can be categorized as renewable or nonrenewable When people use electricity in their homes, the electrical power was probably generated by burning coal, by a nuclear reaction, or by a hydroelectric plant on a river, to name just a few sources. Therefore, coal, nuclear, and hydro are called energy sources. When people fill up a gas tank, the source might be petroleum refined from crude oil or ethanol made by growing and processing corn. Energy sources are divided into two groups: 1- Renewable (an energy source that can be easily replenished) 2- Nonrenewable (an energy source that cannot be easily replenished). ► Renewable energy and nonrenewable energy for kids : Renewable and nonrenewable energy sources can be used as primary energy sources to produce useful energy such as heat or used to produce secondary energy sources such as electricity. When people use electricity in their homes, the electrical power was probably generated from burning coal or natural gas, a nuclear reaction, or a hydroelectric plant on a river, to name a few possible energy sources. The gasoline people use to fuel their cars is made from crude oil (nonrenewable energy) and may contain a bio-fuel (renewable energy) like ethanol, which is made from processed corn. ► Moreover, you will gonna learn What is renewable energy for kids ? There are five main renewable energy sources: 1- Solar energy from the sun 2- Geothermal energy from heat inside the earth 3- Wind energy 4- Biomass from plants 5- Hydro power from flowing water ► What is Nonrenewable energy ? Most of the energy consumed in the United States is from nonrenewable energy sources: ( Petroleum products - Hydrocarbon gas liquids - Natural gas - Coal - Nuclear energy ). Crude oil, natural gas, and coal are called fossil fuels because they were formed over millions of years by the action of heat from the earth's core and pressure from rock and soil on the remains (or fossils) of dead plants and creatures like microscopic diatoms. Most of the petroleum products consumed in the United States are made from crude oil, but petroleum liquids can also be made from natural gas and coal. Nuclear energy is produced from uranium, a nonrenewable energy source whose atoms are split (through a process called nuclear fission) to create heat and, eventually, electricity. Script: Renewable energy resources are being developed because we are running out of fossil fuels at an exponential rate. The wind is produced as a result of giant convection currents in the Earth's atmosphere, which are driven by heat energy from the sun. Wind turbines use the wind to drive turbines directly. The blades are connected to a housing, which contains gears linked to a generator. As the wind blows, it transfers some of its kinetic energy to the blades, which turn and drive the generator. The advantages are that there are no fuel costs and no harmful pollutant gases are produced. However, they depend on wind, if there is no wind, there's no electricity. Like the wind, water can be used to drive turbines directly. Wave machines use the kinetic energy in this movement to drive electricity generators. Another way of using the water is to build a tidal barrage over a river estuary to make use of the kinetic energy in the moving water. The barrage contains electricity generators, which are driven by the water rushing through tubes in the barrage. Hydroelectric power stations are dams built across a river valley. The water high up behind the dam contains gravitational potential energy. This is transferred to kinetic energy as the water rushes down through tubes inside the dam. The moving water drives electrical generators, which may be built inside the dam. Water produced energy is good because no harmful polluting gases are produced and tidal barrages and hydroelectric power stations are very reliable and can be easily switched on. However, tidal barrages destroy the habitat of estuary species and hydroelectricity dams flood farmland and push people from their homes.

Waterotor: A New Renewable Energy Source Waterrotor is a rotating turbine device that is installed in slow-moving water to harness moving water power to generate electricity. Though, it can operate in water speeds as low as two miles an hour, the “sweet spot” is the water speed of around four miles per hour. Waterotor Energy Solutions, created this product, keeping accessible and affordable electricity in mind. Globally, around 1.3 billion people are affected with this issue, as on date. Even those, who have electricity, depend on expensive, polluting fossil fuel generators for their power. Fortunately, over 71 percent of earth’s surface, is covered in slow-moving water and, waterrotor is ideal for these. The Waterotor uses a rolling drum-like system, to generate power, by capturing the push of water. Mechanical energy from the rotating drum, is converted into electrical energy, through onboard generators. It can be placed virtually anywhere, that has a water speed of greater than two miles per hour. It is submerged within ocean currents, rivers and canals. The Waterotor design achieves maximum torque, resulting in a high coefficient of power. This design works better than propeller or wing-like blades, which require higher water speeds, in order to match the same coefficient of power. In May 2016, Waterotor Energy Solutions revealed plans to manufacture Waterotors in Indonesia. If this plan succeeds, it will supply electricity to fishing villages, on the more than 17,000 Indonesian islands. Another interested nation is the Philippines. A government group in the Philippines is venturing to build up to 2,000 Waterotors, to bring the technology to the Philippines. Waterotor Energy Solutions also has agreements with the Federated States of Micronesia and, many other Pacific Ocean jurisdictions. The main advantages of the Waterotor is its ability to use slow-moving water. The abundance of slow-moving water, makes locations for the product seemingly endless. As it is a mobile device, it does not require bottom fixtures or foundations. It only need a simple anchoring. It can be designed as buoyant secured by anchors or, designed to be heavier than water, so that it can be lowered from a bridge, barge, boat or buoy. It has structural integrity and, a very high coefficient of power in output versus size. The Waterotor is environmentally friendly, because it has no high-spinning blades and, it doesn’t not disrupt the fish. Last, but not the least, it is cost effective, simple to build, and is a fully scalar device. Here's a hint, it's 1 million times bigger than the Earth and without it our planet would be a dark, cold rock floating in space. You guessed it: the incredible, brilliant sun. The Earth gets more energy from this ball of fire and gas in one day than the whole world's population uses in an entire year. Every living thing depends on the sun for its existence, from tiny microbes deep in the ocean to plants, animals and people. Humans have been tinkering with solar energy since the dawn of time. Ancient civilizations used glass and mirrors to light fires, but it wasn't until the 1950s that technology was developed to convert the sun's energy into electricity using photovoltaic cells. Today, solar technology is more efficient and less expensive and is used all around the globe to create electricity, heat water, cook food and even power vehicles. So how do solar panels usually work? When the sun hits a solar panel, material inside (usually silicon) absorbs the energy. This causes the electrons and its atoms to get very excited and start dancing around. The atoms then get hot and shed the electrons, which travel out of the panel through copper wiring and — ZAP! — we have electricity! A control device called an inverter changes this electricity from direct current to the alternating current we use. The electricity then passes from breaker boxes to outlets and into electrical items like a computer and lights. Whatever you don't use can go back into the grid to be used by someone else. So there you have it — the amazing power of the sun. Some people see a future where most of our energy can come from this pollution-free and renewable resource, and that's a sunny outlook that will make the whole world smile! On average, Chinese people use a third of the energy used by a person in a developed nation, yet China is one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases. So how will China fulfil the responsibilities agreed in the UN Paris Agreement (CMA1)? Let’s take a look at how China plans to reduce its energy consumption, introduce new technologies and the different energy sources used - hydropower, wind power, solar power, geothermal energy and nuclear power. China’s goal is that 20% of its energy will come from non-fossil fuel energy by 2030. So where will it come from? China not only possesses the largest installed hydropower capacity in the world, but also the most advanced hydropower technology. China’s wind power industry is the fastest growing in the world with two wind turbines installed per hour in 2015. China’s biggest plant has more than 3,500 turbines. But next, China needs to improve the grid to make sure it can use all the wind power that it generates. China can make more solar energy than anywhere else on earth and also supports the development of solar power worldwide with advanced technology and equipment. In 2020, the country’s solar panel installation capacity will reach 110 million kilowatts – which can provide electricity for 80 million people. It is particularly valuable in rural provinces, where more and more people are turning to home solar systems for energy. Turning agricultural residue into pellets has kick-started a national biogas industry in China. 120 kilometres south of Beijing, China has developed its first smoke-free city - Xiong County, which has become a model for other parts of China. 95% of its heating comes from geothermal sources. As China has one sixth of the world’s geothermal resources, this resource will help to increase China’s use of non-fossil fuel energy from 12% to 15%. Nuclear power currently accounts for 3% of China’s total power generation. China’s nuclear power units in operation have never had accidents at or above Level 2 on the International Nuclear Accident Classification scale. But China’s plans to reduce carbon emissions don’t just focus on clean energy – it plans to reduce its energy consumption and introduce new technology and approaches. China has become the world’s largest electric and hybrid vehicle market and is subsidizing the industry to make it more attractive for manufacturers and consumers. And in 2017, China introduced the world’s largest carbon-trading market encouraging companies to curb emissions.

Renewable resources, like trees, replace themselves quickly. Nonrenewable resources, like coal, take thousands or million of years to replace. · People use many resources faster than the earth replaces them. Recycling is a process that treats materials for reuse so that we don’t have to gather as many resources from nature. · All energy resources can be traced back to the sun. The energy resource we use the most are fossil fuels. · Fossil fuels are nonrenewable. They form from the remains of dead organisms that are millions of years old. · Petroleum, or crude oil, is the liquid fossil fuel we get gasoline from. · Gaseous fossil fuels are natural gases. Natural gases power our kitchen stoves. · Coal is a solid fossil fuel that comes from buried, decomposed plant material. Coal is also a rock. · We are always looking for alternative energy sources because obtaining fossil fuels harms the environment. When coal is burned, sulfor dioxide is released and combines with the moisture in the air to make acid rain (sulfuric acid). · Nuclear energy is an alternative source of energy that comes from splitting the nuclei of atoms. This process is called fission, and it releases a lot of energy that is used to run electric generators in power plants. The waste products are easy to contain, but it is hard to know where to bury them. · Solar cells, like the ones on calculators, get their energy directly from the sun. Solar energy does not pollute like many other energy resources, but solar panels are very expensive to make. · Wind is another clean energy source. However, wind turbines are only effective in places where the wind is steady, such as California and north Texas. · Hydroelectric energy uses the power of falling water to make energy. Like wind energy, hydroelectric energy cannot be harnessed everywhere. Dams built to harness this energy also hurt the fish populations and other wildlife. · Underground water is hot enough in some places to evaporate into steam. Geothermal energy uses the steam from natural vents called geysers to power electric generators.
