Trade-weighted effective exchange rate index

02:01
Trade-weighted effective exchange rate index The trade-weighted effective exchange rate index, a common form of the effective exchange rate index, is a multilateral exchange rate index It is compiled as a weighted average of exchange rates of home versus foreign currencies, with the weight for each foreign country equal to its share in trade Depending on the purpose for which it is used, it can be export-weighted, import-weighted, or total-external trade weighted The trade-weighted effective exchange rate index is an economic indicator for comparing the exchange rate of a country against those of their major trading partners By design, movements in the currencies of those trading partners with a greater share in an economys exports and imports will have a greater effect on the effective exchange rate In a multilateral, highly globalized, world, the effective exchange rate index is much more useful than a bilateral exchange rate, such as that between the Australian dollar and the United States dollar, for assessing changes in the competitiveness due to exchange rate movements Generally, the weighting method is geometric weighti Trade-weighted effective exchange rate index Click for more; https://www.turkaramamotoru.com/en/trade-weighted-effective-exchange-rate-index-16007.html There are excerpts from wikipedia on this article and video

Korea's effective exchange rate hits 5 1/2 year high in December

00:35
Korean exporters lost their price competitiveness by nearly five percent last year because of the appreciation of the country's currency. The Bank of Korea says the won's effective exchange rate index stood at 108-point-6-4 in December, up 4-point-8 percent from a year earlier. The index, indicating the price competitiveness of Korean products in export markets, was the highest level in five-and-a-half years. It measures the won's relative strength against a trade-weighted basket of currencies of Korea's trade partners.

Episode 116: How the Chicago Board Option Exchange (CBOE) Volatility Index (VIX) Works

This measure is known as the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, commonly referred to simply by its ticker symbol VIX. So how does the VIX work? Commonly referred to as the investor fear gauge, the VIX is constructed using implied volatilities of a wide range of S&P 500 options. As a way of producing a numerical value, the VIX uses a mathematical formula to analyze the difference between the purchase of call and put option prices. A call is a type of option contract that gives the owner the right to purchase a specified number of a certain security at a set price for an established period of time. Although the owner of the contract may exercise their call option if they wish, they are under no obligation to do so. So here is how it works. Lets say that you purchase a call option to purchase 100 shares XYZ Company at $100 over the next seven days. XYZ Company is currently trading at $95 per share. If you exercised your call option now you would be purchasing shares of XYZ Company for $100 apiece while their market value is $95. So essentially you are losing $5 per share, or $500 total if you purchase 100 shares. So unless its share price increases over $100 there is no reason for you to exercise your call option. But if XYZ Company appreciates to lets say $105 per share, you can exercise your call option and purchase shares for $100 each. You can then turnaround and immediately sell them for $105 per share, which is the market value, or you can simply put them in your portfolio. Selling the securities immediately would yield a $5 per share profit or $500 total assuming 100 shares are purchased. Now the only reason that an investor would by a call option is if they felt that the market was going to appreciate value. As a result, a greater number of call options compared to put options will lower the numerical value of the VIX. Now a put is another type of option contract that works in a similar fashion to a call. However, instead of having the option to purchase a security, a put provides the owner with the right to sell a specified number of shares at a specific price within a certain period of time. Think of a put option as like insurance on your home or vehicle. Just like homeowners insurance and auto insurance, a put option is meant to protect you in the case that your asset becomes damaged, or in this case decreases in value significantly. If that does happen, you have a contract that gives the right to sell the security at a higher than market value. For example, lets say that you purchase a put option allowing you to acquire 100 shares of XYZ company at $100 per share for a seven day period. All of a sudden the share price of XYZ Company plummets from $105 to $90 per share. Because you are the owner of a put option, you can exercise your option and sell your shares at $100 per share instead of the market value of $90 per share, which would save you quite a bit of money. The only reason that an investor would purchase a put option is if they expected a security to decrease in value and they either wanted to protect their own investments or take advantage of investors who are not as vigilant. Taking into account the basic economic principle of supply and demand, if investors purchase a larger number of call options the the premiums or prices of those options will increase, which will result in a lower VIX. If investors purchase a larger number of put options than the premiums of those options will increase, which will result in a higher VIX. Although meaningless to some, this numerical carries significant importance to investors. A score of greater than 30 communicates that a greater amount of volatility is expected going forward and investors are overall more fearful. A score of less than 20 communicates the expectation of low risk and low market volatility in the future. At least thats the expectation. Due to the fact that the VIX is evaluating calls and puts that are purchased based upon assumptions as well as expectations, the index measures the expectation of volatility and not actual volatility itself. So as with anything, there is always a risk of relying solely on one indicator to make investment decisions.

Korean won's real effective exchange rate spikes 4% in Aug.

00:51
하반기 원화 실질가치 상승률 27개국 중 1 위 The Korean won has topped the list of 27 currencies in terms of its real effective exchange rate. According to the Bank for International Settlements, as of late August, the Korean currency had risen 4-point-1 percent since June to 118-point-5... where 100 means parity. The trend could hurt Korea's exports as the nation will lose its edge in price competitiveness. While the government could theoretically do something to cushion the fall, the U.S. Treasury Department has urged Korea and 5 other economies on the so-called "Monitoring List"... to limit foreign exchange intervention to cases of disorder in the market. The U.S. did however encourage further steps to support domestic demand, including more robust use of fiscal policy... and highlighted the need for increased transparency of foreign exchange operations. Investopedia Video: Interest Rates (Nominal and Real)

01:48
Be the first to watch our newest videos via Investopedia Video: http://www.investopedia.com/video/ Interest rates are the primary yardstick for measuring how much return lenders will get. However, the stated interest rate on a loan, sometimes called the nominal rate, doesn't tell the whole story. Because of inflation, the purchasing power of every dollar lent out to an individual or a business tends to decrease over time. Lenders take this into account by calculating what's known as the real interest rate. Big Mac Index shows Korean won is "less under-valued" from earlier this year

02:02
빅맥 지수: 한국 원화값 달러대비 23% 저평가 The latest Big Mac Index is out. Big Mac index, of course, being lighthearted guide to whether currencies are at their "correct levels." The latest number shows that Koreans have more purchasing power, at least in theory. With the Korean currency closing stronger against the greenback as of recent, Korea now ranks 23rd in the Big Mac index. Here's our Lee Jiwon. The Big Mac, the iconic burger sold at McDonald's restaurants, has become more affordable in Korea, at least in theory,... according to the latest Big Mac Index, published by The Economist on Tuesday. The 'Big Mac Index' is an informal way of measuring the purchasing power parity of countries,... by comparing a country's currency to the U.S. dollar and the price of a Big Mac in that country. The lower index a country has, the more its currency is under-valued. And the latest results show that Korea's Big Mac index stood at 3-point-59 earlier this year, compared to the current 3-point-86, meaning the Korean won has become "less under-valued". This is an increase in Korea's rank from 24 to 23,... showing that the gap between "currency in Big Mac" and actual currency have narrowed. This also means, theoretically, that purchasing power has increased in Korea. Based on the index, Korea now has the second most expensive Big Mac in Asia,... after Singapore. However, the Korean won is still under-valued by 23-point-5-percent. The index for the second half of 2016 was based on the exchange rate of 1-thousand-140 won against one U.S. dollar. But according to the Big Mac index, it should be right for one U.S. dollar to cost 873 won. China and Japan have also seen a decrease in their under-valuation of currencies as the Chinese Yuan and Japanese Yen have become stronger against the greenback in the first half of the year. So our government, unlike the Greek government, literally can't run out of money. After all, it can print the stuff. So there's almost no risk that America will default on its debt. But if the U.S. government prints money to pay its bills, won't that lead to inflation? No, not if the economy is still depressed. Still, haven't crises like the one envisioned by deficit scolds happened in the past? Actually, no. As far as I can tell, every example supposedly illustrating the dangers of debt involves either a country that, like Greece today, lacked its own currency, or a country that, like Asian economies in the 1990s, had large debts in foreign currencies." - Paul Krugman http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/26/opinion/krugman-fighting-fiscal-phantoms.html

Korean won strengthens most compared to 27 nations in Aug. from June

00:42
하반기 원화 실질가치 상승률 27개국 중 1 위 The Korean won has strengthened the most compared to 27 major currencies,... prompting concerns local exporters are losing their price competitiveness. The Bank for International Settlements says... its index gauging the exchange rate fluctuation for Korea... stood at 1-hundred-18-point-5-3 as of the end of August,... up around four percent since the end of June. That's the highest rate of increase among 27 currencies, including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan. The so-called 'effective exchange rate index' describes the relative strength of a currency relative to a basket of other currencies. A reading over one-hundred means a certain currency has strengthened against the other. How is the market doing today? This is a question that many have asked over the course of the past several decades and, believe it or not, for a while there was no real way to answer that question. This is why index funds were created. They give us a way to gauge how well (or poorly) the market is doing on any given day. But there is still a lot of mystery surrounding these funds, so I’m going to be answering the most common questions today. I’m also going to be discussing which is the “best” index, at least in terms of rate of return. This is index funds… explained! Appreciation of Korean won to hurt exporters further

00:49
원화 실질가치 상승률 1위…수출에 '설상가상' The value of the Korean won against the U.S. dollar rose sharply in July, recording the highest appreciate rate out of 27 leading currencies. According to data by the Bank for International Settlements, the real effective exchange rate of the Korean currency stood at 116-point-nine-three last month, up two-point-two-six percent from the previous month. Korea topped the list in terms of appreciation rate, followed by Australia, Japan and New Zealand. The steep rise is attributed to a possible U.S. rate hike in the coming months, the nation's upgraded sovereign credit rating and increased foreign investment funds. The strengthening won is expected to hurt Korea's declining exports further, which already posted the longest consecutive monthly decline in July. Inflation is low and the exchange rate is rising on a trade-weighted basis. OCR hikes are now a very distant prospect. The more interesting discussion is whether the RBNZ will reduce the OCR this year.

Won-to-dollar exchange rate drops 6.9% from end of 2016

It seems the local currency will continue its rally against the greenback,... along with other Asian currencies. According to a Seoul-based finance institution,... the won-to-dollar exchange rate has fallen six-point-nine percent since the end of last year. That's the biggest drop among major currencies. Over the same period,... the Taiwanese dollar and the Japanese yen also gained substantially against the U.S. dollar,... both rising more than six percent. Experts believe the greenback will remain relatively weak for the time being,... as they expect another U.S. rate hike this year.
