CITP Luncheon Speaker Series: Elana Zeide - Ethical Use of Big Data in Education

37:04
Education is increasingly big data-driven. Digitally-mediated education tools, social media data mining, and the Internet of Things generates a wealth of data about students’ actions both within and outside classrooms. Personalized learning platforms use detailed, real-time learner information to adjust instruction, assessment, and guidance automatically through adaptive structures and artificial intelligence. These algorithmic profiles can also serve as credentials in the place of traditional resumes and transcripts, and, in doing so, provide more access to better quality, lower-cost education and socioeconomic opportunity. This presentation examines the rise, promise, and perils of big data-driven education. New technologies and infrastructures may have unintended consequences that undermine the very goals reformers seek to achieve. As part of an emerging “scored society,” reliance on what I call “algorithmic credentials” also has important implications for society, the economy, and democracy. Bio: Elana Zeide is an associate research scholar at CITP, a visiting fellow at Yale Univeristy’s Information Society Project, an affiliate of New York University’s Information Law Institute and the Data & Society Research Institute, and an advisory board member of the Future of Privacy Forum. She works as attorney, scholar, and consultant focusing on student privacy, predictive analytics, and the proverbial permanent record in the age of big data. She examines the law, policies, and cultural norms emerging as education, and the rest of society, becomes increasingly data-driven. Zeide advises parents, educators, companies, and policymakers on student information practices in traditional schools, virtual learning environments, and the commercial sphere. She also writes for both popular and academic publications, recently including a discussion of algorithmic profiling on Slate, an article examining student privacy regulation in the Drexel Law Review, and a chapter on legal requirement and best practices in the forthcoming Handbook of Learning Analytics & Educational Data Mining. Zeide graduated from Yale University and New York University’s School of Law. She subsequently worked as a litigation associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLC, a legal analyst at Bloomberg L.P., and a visiting professor at Yale University, where she taught courses on Free Speech and the First Amendment before opening her own privacy and technology law practice. Prior to becoming an attorney, Zeide was a journalist and pop culture columnist in London and New York, and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Nonfiction Writing from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. She believes she is the only person to have both reported for and legally represented The National Enquirer.

Excel file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/561402/TTEST.xls In this video Paul Andersen explains how to run the student's t-test on a set of data. He starts by explaining conceptually how a t-value can be used to determine the statistical difference between two samples. He then shows you how to use a t-test to test the null hypothesis. He finally gives you a separate data set that can be used to practice running the test. Do you speak another language? Data mining

47:46
Data mining (the analysis step of the "Knowledge Discovery in Databases" process, or KDD), an interdisciplinary subfield of computer science, is the computational process of discovering patterns in large data sets involving methods at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics, and database systems. The overall goal of the data mining process is to extract information from a data set and transform it into an understandable structure for further use. Aside from the raw analysis step, it involves database and data management aspects, data pre-processing, model and inference considerations, interestingness metrics, complexity considerations, post-processing of discovered structures, visualization, and online updating. The term is a misnomer, because the goal is the extraction of patterns and knowledge from large amount of data, not the extraction of data itself. It also is a buzzword, and is frequently also applied to any form of large-scale data or information processing (collection, extraction, warehousing, analysis, and statistics) as well as any application of computer decision support system, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and business intelligence. The popular book "Data mining: Practical machine learning tools and techniques with Java" (which covers mostly machine learning material) was originally to be named just "Practical machine learning", and the term "data mining" was only added for marketing reasons. Often the more general terms "(large scale) data analysis", or "analytics" -- or when referring to actual methods, artificial intelligence and machine learning -- are more appropriate. Glenn Beck announces his new Anti-Common Core Book "CONFORM" Handbook

07:29
Conform: Exposing the Truth About Common Core and Public Education by Glenn Beck ~ http://www.bit.ly/ConformBook ~ http://www.GlennBecksBookList.com Glenn Beck announces, well technically Stu announced their next book that will go after the Common Core standard educational program being pushed around by Government officials and Big Business leaders. PUBLIC EDUCATION IS NEVER MENTIONED IN THE CONSTITUTION. WHY? BECAUSE OUR FOUNDERS KNEW THAT IT WAS AN ISSUE FOR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS--NOT THE FEDERAL ONE. It's not a coincidence that the more the federal government has inserted itself into public education over the years, the worse our kids have fared. Washington dangles millions of dollars in front of states and then tells them what they have to do to get it. It's backdoor nationalization of education--and it's leading us to ruin. In Conform, Glenn Beck presents a well-reasoned, fact-based analysis that proves it's not more money our schools need--it's a complete refocusing of their priorities and a total restructuring of their relationship with the federal government. In the process, he dismantles many of the common myths and talking points that are often heard by those who want to protect the status quo. Critics of the current system are just "TEACHER BASHERS"...Teachers' unions put KIDS FIRST...Homeschooled kids SUFFER both ACADEMICALLY and SOCIALLY..."LOCAL CONTROL" is an excuse to protect MEDIOCRITY...COMMON CORE is "RIGOROUS" and "STATE LED"...Critics of Common Core are just CONSPIRACY THEORISTS...Elementary school teachers need TENURE...We CAN'T REFORM schools until we ERADICATE POVERTY...SCHOOL CHOICE takes money away from PUBLIC SCHOOLS...CHARTER SCHOOLS perform poorly relative to public schools. There is no issue more important to America's future than education. The fact that we've yielded control over it to powerful unions and ideologically driven elitists is inexcusable. We are failing ourselves, our children, and our country. Conform gives parents the facts they need to take back the debate and help usher in a new era of education built around the commonsense principles of choice, freedom, and accountability.

The Heart of Math Education - What "Common Core Math" Really Means

02:03
This is a condensed and more polished video than the original (http://youtu.be/dmybO35F_EI), which was a response to NBC News coverage and other criticisms of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics that incorrectly claim Common Core does not allow the "standard" approach to solving math problems (actually, those are still required standards, they just come after some concept development) and instead requires a "new" approach (there is no new required approach, but instead multiple approaches as needed by the teacher and students). Fundamentals of Upstream Oil and Gas

09:23
Oil 101 - A FREE Introduction to the Oil and Gas Industry I this first of 10 modules, we introduce the learner to some key fundamentals of the Upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. The full Oil 101 course includes: +Introduction to Upstream +Introduction to Midstream +Introduction to Downstream +Introduction to Exploration +Introduction to Drilling +Introduction to Production +Introduction to Natural Gas +Introduction to Refining +Introduction to Supply and Trading +Introduction to Petroleum Product Marketing Learn More about Oil 101: http://www.ektinteractive.com/ http://www.ektinteractive.com/oil-101/ So, What is Upstream? Most oil and gas companies’ business structures are organized according to business segment, assets, or function. The upstream segment of oil and gas is also known as exploration and production, or E&P because it encompasses activities related to searching for, recovering, and producing crude oil and natural gas. Upstream is all about wells, where to locate them; how deep and how far to drill them; and how to design, construct, operate and manage them to deliver the greatest possible return on investment with the lightest, safest and smallest operational footprint. In fact, the E&P sector should probably be called the EDP sector - because “you can’t find oil if you don’t drill wells.” Exploration Obtaining the Lease Let’s start with exploration which involves the operator obtaining a lease and permission to drill from the owner of onshore or offshore acreage thought to contain oil or gas. Then the operator must conduct geological and geophysical surveys to select the first well site to explore for, and hopefully find, economic accumulations of oil or gas. This well is often called a “wildcat well.” Drilling is physically creating the “borehole” in the ground that will eventually become a productive oil or gas well. This work is typically done by rig contractors and service companies in the Oilfield Services business sector. On a wellsite, there can be as many as 30-40 different service contractors providing expertise to the operator. Wells can be relatively simple or unbelievably complex. Wells can totally vertical for miles or both deep and horizontal. There are also highly complex “J” and “S” configured wells with numerous branches, or laterals, emanating from the original, or “mother”, hole. These are called “deviated wells.” Production Finally, let’s discuss production, where reserves are “converted to cash” by maximizing the recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Essentially, production is efficiently bringing the hydrocarbons to the surface and treating them as needed to make them marketable. So that’s the basics of E&P. We will drill deeper into each of these operations in the complete Oil 101 course at a later date. Now, let’s talk about unconventional resources, clearly the hottest topic in oil and gas over the last decade. Unconventional Future of Oil and Gas Unconventional resources are defined as any resource extracted, or produced, by any method other than the traditional vertical or slightly deviated well. The three main sources of technological breakthroughs that have made unconventional developments profitable include: Horizontal drilling Hydraulic fracturing Subsea engineering (especially deep water production)

Data analysis

16:20
Analysis of data is a process of inspecting, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information, suggesting conclusions, and supporting decision making. Data analysis has multiple facets and approaches, encompassing diverse techniques under a variety of names, in different business, science, and social science domains. Data mining is a particular data analysis technique that focuses on modeling and knowledge discovery for predictive rather than purely descriptive purposes. Business intelligence covers data analysis that relies heavily on aggregation, focusing on business information. In statistical applications, some people divide data analysis into descriptive statistics, exploratory data analysis (EDA), and confirmatory data analysis (CDA). EDA focuses on discovering new features in the data and CDA on confirming or falsifying existing hypotheses. Predictive analytics focuses on application of statistical or structural models for predictive forecasting or classification, while text analytics applies statistical, linguistic, and structural techniques to extract and classify information from textual sources, a species of unstructured data. All are varieties of data analysis. This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Creative Commons image source in video

Concise Chinese Materia Medica - Kamwo Herbal Pharmacy Book Review

04:14
Dr. Henry McCann, DAOM, L.Ac., Dipl. OM provides his review and commentary on the Concise Chinese Materia Medica, for Kamwo Herbal Pharmacy in New York City. This work is a primary textbook for students as well as a clinical handbook for practitioners. It integrates a modern didactic learning approach with information derived from key Chinese university texts to give readers a clear and authentic resource for the study of Chinese medicinal therapy. Its conscientious design allows for efficiency in study and accessibility in the clinic, both of which are complemented by a variety of supplementary self-study materials on CD-ROM for students and professionals alike. A distinguishing feature of the text lies in its detailed chapter introductions, which integrate core principles of internal medicine into the discussions of each category of medicinals. by focusing on the various pathomechanisms, patterns, and traditional diseases involved in each category these introductions allow readers to gain a deeper understanding of the various conditions treated with medicinals. Additionally, they provide the reader with insight into unusual features and special applications of specific medicinals. Following each chapter introduction are detailed monographs that cover in all over 400 substances commonly used in Chinese medicine. The monographs are presented with the same level of detail found in Chinese university texts. Because this text utilizes the terminology standards of the Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine, readers can easily integrate their knowledge with the dozens of professional publications that already adhere to this standard. Furthermore, the monographs contain information on key safety issues affecting modern practice, including current knowledge on herb-drug interactions. Created with the input of educators as well as students, the Concise Chinese Materia Medica is the first materia medica that doubles as a study guide for examination. The essential information for each medical is clearly presented, facilitating memorization of data as well as highlighting key clincal concepts. In addition, included on the accompanying CD-ROM is a vast question bank intended to prepare students for examinations. Reflecting modern educational approaches and current examination trends, these materials have been organized to contain both case-based examples as well as questions to enhance memorization. Thus, students may master the details of medicinal therapy without losing their focus on developing clinical decision-making abilities. The inclusion of study materials and self-test questions allows students to save a great deal of time and money by minimizing the need for homemade study materials and expensive test-prep courses. with a price tag that can be accommodated within even a student's budget, this is a book that should not be missed. Home Health Agency (HHA) PEPPER 102 - Webinar Archive

43:41
This recording is a continued discussion on the Home Health Agency (HHA) Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report (PEPPER). Building off of the Aug. 17 session, CMS contractor Kimberly Hrehor, MHA, RHIA, CHC, director at TMF Health Quality Institute reviews new resources available for HHAs, including peer-group bar charts, national- and state-level data, and there will be time for questions about the PEPPER. Still wondering how PEPPER might be helpful? According to TMF, the Office of Inspector General, Recovery Auditors, Medicare Administrative Contractors and other federal contractors are mining Medicare claims data in an effort to identify providers that may be at risk for fraud, waste and abuse. CMS is now producing an annual PEPPER for each HHA. HHAs are encouraged to review their report to learn if they might be an “outlier” in any of the target areas. Learn how to access your PEPPER then visit the PEPPER Resources Portal for a quick tour on how to access and review your report. The PEPPER is a free report summarizing three years of an HHA’s Medicare billing practices, comparing them with other HHAs for ten areas at risk for improper Medicare payments. The webinar is free, as is additional information, educational resources and training at PEPPERresources.org.

How Can Cognitive Science Improve Online Learning?

01:03:27
Google Tech Talk November 19, 2012 (click on "show more") Presented by Joseph Jay Williams ABSTRACT Recent research in Cognitive Science provides insights into how learning can be improved that are complementary to those gained from practical experience and the research in Computer Science, Education and other Learning Sciences. This talk considers how learning can be improved by: (1) Asking questions and requesting explanations; (2) Presenting specific examples to illustrate abstract principles; (3) Using tests as pedagogical rather than assessment tools. Moreover, online education provides the unique opportunity for hybrid research that is simultaneously applied and academic. Online environments satisfy the scientific requirements of randomized experiments and precise control, as well as the practical need for ecological validity, fidelity, and scalable dissemination. One virtue of a basic Cognitive Science approach to online education is revealing abstract similarities in learning different topics: In addition to presenting ongoing research at Khan Academy and MOOCs like EdX, I discuss how analogous principles can be explored in teaching end-users Google Power Search, internal training, and customer education. This work can therefore simultaneously advance public education and yield corporate benefits. Presenter's Biography: Joseph Jay Williams does Cognitive Science research on how generating explanations promotes learning, and Online Education work on improving learning from mathematics exercises (Khan Academy), increasing motivation to learn by changing people's beliefs about intelligence (Project for Education Research that Scales: www.perts.net), teaching metacognitive & learning strategies in Massive Open Online Courses (EdX), and using technology to change educational and health habits. He is finishing his PhD in Psychology at UC Berkeley, and also has interests in consulting for corporate e-learning and training, web development for online education, using journalism to disseminate research to practitioners, and education in online search and problem-solving for students and entrepreneurs. Authors@Google: Tim Harford

52:15
Time Harford speaks to Googlers in Mountain View on May 25, 2011 about his book Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure. About the book: Tim Harford, the Undercover Economist, shows us a new and inspiring approach to solving the most pressing problems in our lives. When faced with complex situations, we have all become accustomed to looking to our leaders to set out a plan of action and blaze a path to success. Harford argues that today's challenges simply cannot be tackled with ready-made solutions and expert opinion; the world has become far too unpredictable and profoundly complex. Instead, we must adapt. Deftly weaving together psychology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, physics, and economics, along with the compelling story of hard-won lessons learned in the field, Harford makes a passionate case for the importance of adaptive trial and error in tackling issues such as climate change, poverty, and financial crises—as well as in fostering innovation and creativity in our business and personal lives. Taking us from corporate boardrooms to the deserts of Iraq, Adapt clearly explains the necessary ingredients for turning failure into success. It is a breakthrough handbook for surviving—and prospering— in our complex and ever-shifting world. Adapt is available at the Google eBookstore: http://books.google.com/books?id=8-Kv5S8PbowC
