CSS Tutorial For Beginners 27 - Font Size

08:00
Hey my good friends, in this CSS tutorial for beginners we're going to dive head-first into the font-size property. The font-size property in CSS, believe it or not, controls how large the font displays in a browser. We can control font size either via absolute or relative measurements, and we'll cover both types in this video. Absolute font sizes are immutable (unless overridden later in the CSS), whereas relative font sizes are determined largely by the base font size they inherit. For my video on CSS inheritance, check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMpaebQ3n6A&index=11&list=PL4cUxeGkcC9gQeDH6xYhmO-db2mhoTSrT Anyway, peace out, keep coding & have fun :). Change WordPress Font-Size Using Theme Options or CSS | WP Learning Lab

Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Download your exclusive 10-Point WP Hardening Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist Change WordPress Font-Size Using Theme Options or CSS | WP Learning Lab Changing WordPress Font-size is done in the theme options panel or with CSS. Once you know where to make the changes in your theme it is easy to do. As with a lot of things in Wordpress, where you do things depends on the theme you're using and the plugins you're running. First, always check to see if your theme has theme options. If it does then you should be able to find a typography tab to edit font sizes. Sometimes font sizes will be found in the general settings of the theme options. The theme options will be found either under the Appearance menu in the left hand side admin menu or there will be special menu item that the them itself added. If your theme doesn't have theme options, then you're next stop should be the customizer. Some themes have a lot of WordPress Customizer support. Go to Appearance then Customizer to see if you can edit font sizes there. If both of those are a no-go then you're left with going to directly to the stylesheet to change font sizes. This is method is great if you have some CSS knowledge. To find your stylesheet go to Appearance then Editor. The stylesheet will be the first thing to appear in the editor. If, for some reason, it's not there, then find the style.css file in the list of theme files on the right and click it to open it in the editor. NOTE: You should be edit stylesheet of a child theme only. If you edit the parent theme stylesheet directly then your edits could be overwritten when you update the them. Here's a tutorial on how to create a child theme if you need it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8n1h-85SMQ Now that you have the CSS stylesheet open in the editor you will need to find the font styles. The easiest way to do this is go to your main site and find the fonts that you want to edit. If you're using Google Chrome or Firefox right click on the text and choose the "inspector" or "inspect" from the context menu. If you're not using Google Chrome or Firefox then start using them. In the inspector that opens at the bottom of the page you should see the text highlighted in the main area and the class of the element on the right. You can type styles right into the element on the right hand side to quickly test to see how big you want the font to be. This doesn't save it permanently. What you see is only in your browser and as soon as you refresh the page you'll lose it. So, find the class for the text, find the right size and move that CSS rule in to the stylesheet for the child theme. Sometimes you'll have to fight with the existing CSS to make your font changes take effect. That's where a command link !important comes in very handy. If you type .h2 {font-size:10px !important;}. Having !important forces that style to take precedent over all others. It's a lazy way to code CSS, but unless you have time to find the conflicting styles, it's a fast and easy trick. I hope this information helps you! Clip an image to text with CSS

04:20
It's surprisingly easy to clip a background image to some text! We can use the background-clip property to do it. This let's change how a background is clipping, with padding-box, border-box and content-box all being options. This time though, we're focused on `background-clip: text`. The only issue is, when you first do it, you won't see your text, so you'll want to make that text transparent so you can actually see the image. 12. CSS Fonts - CSS Basics

04:41
All you gotta do to change the font of your page is decide what font you wanna use, say Roboto and write font-family: Roboto… Really? No... not really, it’s more complicated than that. Typography is a gigantic topic in web design and of course you have a ton of options in CSS to better your font styles and its readability. Now this isn’t a design course, so I won’t be covering design theory, I’m not gonna tell you what looks good and what doesn’t, but I will show you how to manage your fonts in HTML/CSS. You can use fonts that already exist on your computer and everybody else’s computers like “Times New Roman” or “Arial”, these are generic “WEB SAFE” fonts, but they’re limited and honestly kinda boring. Or you can use what’s called a custom font. There are a ton of custom fonts out there. If you’re a designer you have definitely worked with custom fonts so you know what I’m talking, you’re also not gonna like what I’m about to say. I am not a huge fan using custom fonts for websites Not because they’re not cool or pretty. But for one thing, not all browsers render custom fonts the same way or even correctly, so you potentially run that risk. Also, using custom fonts means anybody going to your site has to wait for the browser to download the custom font first, then render the site. Where as with generic fonts it doesn’t. And that’s costly, it takes time and bandwidth. Lastly, a huge proportion of custom fonts are great for banners and flyers and quotes (SHOW INSTAGRAM QUOTE, SHAKE HEAD), but they are absolutely awful for long body text like articles. Their readability is not always the best. With all that said, a lot of people still use them for many different reasons. Trust me, I understand the importance of uniqueness and personality when it comes to design, in fact ColorCode’s website uses a custom font on the hero page, but it comes at a cost. Custom fonts are like a chocolate milkshake. They’re sooo amazing but you really shouldn’t be doing it, unless you are willing to pay the price… Anyway,...I still want you to know how to change fonts. There are 2 things you need to do. Load or “EMBED” the font into the page (assuming it’s a custom font, for generic fonts you can skip this step), THEN change the font-family property in your CSS. How do you load fonts? Using a LINK tag in your HTML… OR…. an @import or @Font-Face statement in your CSS to point to the location of that font. It could be loaded from anywhere on the internet and I’ll show you an example in a second. Again, if you’re using a default font, you don’t need to load anything, because Arial is already available on everybody’s computer/phone/iPad, etc... So,...we’re gonna get some help from our friends over at google fonts to demo this. So head over to fonts.google.com and I’ll show you how. So here it is, a long list of custom fonts for you, pick one and look at the instructions. So I’m gonna pick Roboto and look, it even generates the code for you to embed and then set the font-family. Notice the embed part can be done in a couple of different ways, also the CSS font-family statement can take multiple values separated by a comma. This means hey, Mr. Browser, if you can’t find the first one for whatever reason, cuz it’s a fancy one, go to the next one, if you can’t find that one either, keep going until you get to one that you CAN render. You always wanna have backups in case your custom font can’t be loaded. So, in the next video I’m gonna update our Profile page to use Google Fonts. It’ll be our last demo in this course and it’ll instantly make our page look much more professional, see you there.

How To Change CSS Font Color

04:28
How To Change CSS Font Color https://youtu.be/7IkKyUNuYs0 There are simple CSS rules for adjusting font colors on your website. You have access to millions of colors using RGB, HEX and color names. Color names are the most limiting with only 140 options, but they are the easiest to read since the color names are written in plain text. Here are some sample rules for changing the font color. .myFont {color:red;} Notice the property is not "font-color", that will not work. The property you need to use is simply "color". This example is using the color name of red, which makes the font red. .myFont {color:#FF0000;} This example uses the HEX code for the font color and it is blue. .myFont {color:rgb(255,100,45);} This example is using rgb and the color is. A different version of RGB allows you to adjust the alpha channel, which is the opacity. .myFont {color:rgba(255,100,45,.5);} The example above will change the opacity of the selected font to 50%. The available range is 0 to 1 with zero being invisible. That's all there is to it. I hope this video helps you! If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below. 4 Places To Edit WordPress CSS | WP Learning Lab

08:08
Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL 4 Places To Edit WordPress CSS | WP Learning Lab To edit WordPress CSS you first need to know all the places you can find CSS. There are 4 common places. You may not have all these locations on your website because some of them are theme-dependent. The possible CSS locations are: 1. The WordPress theme or child theme stylesheet (this one you have for sure) 2. The theme options panel (this one you may or may not have) 3. A CSS editor on each page and post (this one you may or may not have) 4. Inline CSS applied directly to HTML elements on the page (this one you will have only if you're written it) Let's go through each one. The WordPress theme or child theme stylesheet When inside your WordPress dashboard if you click on Appearance then Editor you will be able to edit theme or child theme files. Usually the style.css is loaded first by default. If it's not loaded find the style.css file in the list of files on the right side of the editor page. When you find it, click on it. That will open the CSS file in WordPress editor. At this point you can make edits to the file and click on the Update button to save your changes. How to actually code CSS is beyond the scope of this tutorial, but you can check out my CSS channel over here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeFLITjl2v9vtIkftw9UMsw) The danger in editing CSS directly in the stylesheet of the main theme is that what you create may be over written when the theme updates. You get around this problem by creating a child theme (see a tutorial on how to create a WordPress child theme here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8n1h-85SMQ). The theme options panel Not every theme has a theme options panel, but the ones that do make WordPress CSS so much easier to edit. You can simply add CSS to the CSS box in the theme options and click save changes. The upside is that theme updates won't erase the CSS code you create. A CSS editor on each page and post Some themes, like Avada and Divi, give you the option of insert CSS code right into the individual posts and pages of your website. This is great for CSS that you want to be only one page. I would only recommend doing this if you're putting more than 100 lines of CSS into the page. If it's less than 100 lines of CSS you're better to put into the main stylesheet so you stay organized. If it's more than 100 lines of CSS code that only need to exist on one page then your site will load a little bit faster overall by not loading all that CSS into every page. Inline CSS The last place in our list and the last place you'd want to create CSS code is right in your HTML elements. This is called inline CSS and can be difficult to work with for two big reasons. First, you can't apply the CSS to more than one element at a time. So if you want to style all the paragraphs on the page in the same way you have to apply the same CSS code over and over again to each p tag. This is a pain to administer and will result in larger than needed page sizes. Second, if you add inline CSS to lots of pages it will be come difficult to remember what CSS you applied where. Then trying to find it an make edits will become a pain. Inline CSS also takes precedent over CSS in the stylesheet. So you might be make changes to CSS in the stylesheet, but nothing is happening on the page. You'll go through a frustrating few minutes before you figure out the CSS is actually inline on the page. I hope this information helps you! How to use Font Generator to generate Fonts Web Embedding Code-CSS Tutorial for Beginners

12:40
Here, we disclosed how to download fonts from a site and generate Web embedding code for CSS. The objective is to match this font to every computer around the globe. That means, we will have to generate every supporting formats those are available on the computers world-wide. The entire tutorial is divided into two categories. The first one is, choosing the appropriate font for your project and download, then install to your own machine if required. Second one is, using font-face generator online to generate every formats required such as .woff, .woff2 etc. and corresponding stylesheet.css and downloading it into own machine. After that, you need to keep the required files to render that font into your CSS folder of the project, copy the code available in the generated stylesheet.css and paste it into your own stylesheet.css, that you have created for your project, finally copy paste the font-family into the header or paragraph tag wherever it is needed. I used font-squirrel website for both downloading and embedding purpose. Link is as provided below : https://www.fontsquirrel.com/ Font-family that has been used here both in template and web was SAIL. https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/sail?q%5Bterm%5D=sail&q%5Bsearch_check%5D=Y For generating the web embedding code, I used font-squirrel font face generator https://www.fontsquirrel.com/tools/webfont-generator ====================================================== Thanks in advance for watching the video.
