Deep neural networks in social media content analysis - Adam Bielski

Description How can we use the constantly growing number of photos and videos posted on social media? In this talk I will present three practical examples of deep neural networks applications to multimedia information extraction: logo detection, text extraction and popularity prediction. Abstract Every day large numbers of photos and videos are posted in social media. With the advent of modern deep learning, it is now possible to automatically analyze this content to get more in-depth insights. In this talk I will present three hands-on examples of how deep neural networks can be applied for social media content analysis. First, I'll present our neural network architecture used to detect logotypes in the videos given a limited amount of training data. Then I will show a working example of text-in-the-wild extraction (detection and recognition) pipeline. Last but not least, I'll show how video thumbnails can be used to predict video popularity. www.pydata.org PyData is an educational program of NumFOCUS, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the United States. In the last years, social media (mainly Instagram) influencers gained immense popularity as more and more brands understand their potential for marketing products and services. The challenge is to recommend influencer(s) for a particular marketing campaign. Companies might be interested in micro influencers for a certain industry/region and they would also like to understand which content works for the audience of a particular influencer. After finding the right influencers they might want to start a marketing campaign with them and monitor the efficiency of such a campaign. In Socialbakers, we started tackling this problem in November 2018 when we piloted whether we can source Instagram’s business profiles and detect relevant attributes from those profiles. We processed large amounts of semi-structured data (1 TB) and tried to estimate demographic, geographic data and interests of each influencer. After that, we built a smart search algorithm that would take into account these attributes as well as various metrics. Finally, we designed a machine learning based recommender that links content with the influencers based on their audience. This content would serve as an inspiration to the campaign manager. The data exploration and prototyping were done in Databricks (pyspark). Final optimized ETL that processes the data and persists results in S3 and Elasticsearch was also built in Databricks. The content recommended utilizes NLP and other ML approaches. We had no knowledge of Apache Spark before the project so had to onboard the technology during the project. In this paper, we would like to discuss two aspects of the influencers project. Firstly, it is the final influencer recommendation solution where we used Databricks for innovative research and large-scale data engineering including ML. Secondly, it is the challenges we faced while deploying Apache Spark from the scratch and onboarding the teams to our new platform.

More often than not over the past years media outlets have made extensive use of shocking images in order to grab the attention of the audience. Lately though we have seen a shift in the media landscape. Nowadays it seems positive media is gaining traction as a valid currency. When the talk shifts to the dangers of a single story, she brings up the example of Mogadishu. We are all aware of the bomb attacks that have taken place in Somalia. But the reality is that these attacks are not the whole truth. “We know that daily life exists there, we just have to see it,” she says. “It is up to us as media consumers to consider what information we want to have in our life and it's the responsibility of media makers to keep us aware of our choices, because ultimately the pictures that we see will frame our reality and how we react to the rest of the world.” (Video edited by: Pnevma Productions.) Philippa Young is a British writer and a filmmaker living in Beirut, Lebanon. She is the co-founder of What Took You So Long, a guerilla production company that produces documentary films to the most remote areas of the world. Along with her team, they work with an informal and flexible method that fits the situation, culture, country, and people we are shooting. Their guerilla documentary work is about building relationships through living with the people they film, travelling by public transport, and working with local partners and volunteers. She also serves on the editorial board of Makeshift Magazine, a journal of hidden creativity. CRCS Lunch Seminar (Monday, November 23, 2009) Speakers: Hal Roberts and Ethan Zuckerman Title: Media Cloud and Quantitative News Media Analysis Abstract: The rapid rise of participatory media technologies -- weblogs, social networks, microblogging, video sharing sites -- are transforming the news media landscape, reshaping how ideas are spread. Much of the early research on the influence of participatory media on existing institutions focuses on specific, successful cases where media frames developed online influenced offline media. Our project seeks to complement this work with tools to facilitate quantitative analysis of the relationship between media sources. We will present our prototype system to retrieve, tag, cluster and analyze blog and newspaper data, and discuss how the Media Cloud platform will be used in our future experiments, and can be used by other researchers to analyze patterns of influence in news media.

How are consumers receiving news online today? How are news media organizations adapting to an online news environment? The research of Prof. Matthew Weber and colleagues is based on a series of studies using archived Web data to examine changing patterns of news dissemination and information flow in the online news ecosystems, and to better understand how news media organizations are producing digital news. Early findings reveal that news organizations that cautiously experiment with new technology are more likely to succeed over time compared to organizations that aggressively adopt new technology. study. Heat trapped by greenhouse gases is raising ocean temperatures faster than previously thought, concluded an analysis of four recent ocean heating observations. The results provide further evidence that earlier claims of a slowdown or ‘hiatus’ in global warming over the past 15 years were unfounded. “If you want to see where global warming is happening, look in our oceans,” said Zeke Hausfather, co-author of the paper. ‘Ocean heating is a very important indicator of climate change, and we have robust evidence that it is warming more rapidly than we thought.’ Ocean heating is a critical marker of climate change because an estimated 93 percent of the excess solar energy trapped by greenhouse gases accumulates in the world's oceans. And, unlike surface temperatures, ocean temperatures are not affected by year-to-year variations caused by climate events like El Nino or volcanic eruptions. The new analysis shows that trends in ocean heat content match those predicted by leading climate change models and that overall ocean warming is accelerating. "While 2018 will be the fourth warmest year on record on the surface, it will most certainly be the warmest year on record in the oceans, as was 2017 and 2016 before that," Hausfather said. "The global warming signal is a lot easier to detect if it is changing in the oceans than on the surface." The four studies, published between 2014 and 2017, provide better estimates of past trends in ocean heat content by correcting for discrepancies between different types of ocean temperature measurements and by better accounting for gaps in measurements over time or location.
