Daniel Kahneman: Why We Make Bad Decisions About Money (And What We Can Do About It)

03:57
Ever wondered what you were thinking after making a bad decision? Daniel Kahneman explains. To learn more visit our special series, Insider Employers' Minds: http://bigthink.com/blogs/inside-employers-minds Daniel Kahneman: People are not fully rational and they do—they make many choices that if they reflected upon them they would do differently.  There is no question about that. And we have a fair understanding actually of what is happening.  At least at the individual level my sense is that we have explored a lot of what is happening.  I wouldn't say there is going to be no further progress, but we have explored a lot. The major tendencies, well, the major tendencies . . . people tend to frame things very narrowly.  They take a narrow view of decision-making.  They look at the problem at hand and they deal with it as if it were the only problem.  Very frequently, it's a better idea to look at problems as they will recur throughout your life and then you look at the policy that you're to adopt for a class of problems -- difficult to do; would be a better thing.  People frame things narrowly in the sense, for example, that they will save and borrow at the same time instead of somehow treating their whole portfolio of assets as one thing.  If people were able to take a broader view they would, in general, make better decisions.  So that is certainly one of the weaknesses of human decision-making.  We call it narrow framing.  Mental accounting is a big deal.  This is the way that we live, so we have—we keep our money in different mental accounts for which we have different rules, so people will—well of course they spend their spending money, but then there is a hierarchy of the accounts that they will touch.  They will spend money that they have stored for vacation quite often before they will spend whatever they're thinking of as savings for their children's education.  So those are mental accounts for which people have different rules.  More foolishly—this is pretty sensible because mental accounting is a tool of self control—but more foolishly, investors tend to view each stock that they buy as a mental account and they want to sell it when it is a winner.  And so they tend to sell their winners and to hang onto their losers in their portfolio and that turns out to make them substantially poorer than if they had done things differently.  You need to be numerate for certain kinds of decisions.  So numerate people have a significant advantage over those who are not.  Understanding compound interest makes a huge difference whether you're a credit card borrower or somebody with savings.  People have a very hazy idea of compound interest, and it is very detrimental.  So I would say that first of all you need to be numerate, but many people aren't. Then you need to frame things broadly.  It frequently goes with numeracy, but it's not quite the same thing.  And then by taking the broad view, it is very important not to have overly strong emotional reactions to events.  And what I mean by that is that most of us tend to respond to gains and to losses, to changes that happen in our life.  Actually you're better off if you frame things broadly and you think of  . . . you win a few, you lose a few... and you have very limited emotional response to small gains and to small losses.  That tends to induce better decision-making. Directed / Produced byJonathan Fowler & Elizabeth Rodd

China - Profiteering on stamp market

01:43
T/I: 10:19:06 While a craze sweeping China's stock markets is barely under control after officials repeatedly warned of the risks of rampant trading, a new fever is sweeping China in the stamp market, raising more concerns of unregulated profiteering. Stamps and telephone cards are trading at astonishing prices, regardless of their actual value. Souvenir sheets of common postal stamps are selling at 10 times their face value at Beijing's Yuetan Park Stamp Market, while some telephone cards, issued only last year, are selling at nearly 100 times their purchase price. Officials fear this sudden surge in stamp trading could harm the nation's stamp business. Hong Kong stamps and souvenir cards have been particularly hot items. Thousands of speculators visit the park each day. China's investment market is also being heated by government-sanctioned stamp sales which take the form of auctions. At one stamp auction in Beijing in April, a set of antique stamps with an interesting history sold for 680,000 yuan (US$85,000). The four-stamp set of the "East Is Red" was quickly pulled from the mainland market over 30 years ago when officials discovered a printer's flaw -- the island of Taiwan had not been marked in red. SHOWS: BEIJING, CHINA 13/05 stamps on sale at table in market, piles of foreign stamps on sale, people buying and selling stamps at various tables; souvenir cards on sale with portrait of Hong Kong chief executive designate Tung Chee Hwa, saleswoman shows stamps to people. SOT of Mr. Chang Lianchen, director of the stamp market, in Mandarin, asked why so many people invest in stamps "After the government adjusted their policy this stamp market began a resurgence in 1996. Another reason is that China has lowered bank interest rates in 1996. So common people have spare money. Now 30,000 to 50,000 yuan is not enough to trade in the stock market, so they come to the stamp market." Stamps commemorating famous Peking Opera actor Mei Manfang on sale, another valuable stamp with a monkey image; old man looking at a stamp under a magnifying glass, file footage of stamp File 18 April; person bidding for stamps at auction, exhibit of stamps at auction, four-stamp set of "East Is Red" stamp which sold at the auction for 680,000 yuan (US$85,000). This stamp was so highly valued because the printer forgot to highlight Taiwan in red. The stamp was withdrawn from the market. 1.43 You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/438844ec3139800cbe25ddaef7328e05 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

We Went To The Fake Sneaker Capital Of China (HBO)

07:28
After the sun sets in Putian, thousands of bikes carrying fake sneakers hit the streets. The lace-up black market is no secret in Putian, and it's where you can find Chan, a vendor with a knack for getting high-quality pairs off the streets and into the hands of hypebeasts on the other side of the globe. With rubber, he struck gold. "I've spoken to some of our customers some of them are high school students some are college students university students. So yeah these are our main crowd you generally," Chan told VICE News. "It's usually the kids themselves were very resourceful. They understand about replicas they understand that these are high-quality sneakers and they come finding you saying, hey I'd like to buy some high-quality replicas from you." And while vendors are subject to police raids and potential lawsuits, Chan has been able to stay afloat. These days, the only thing slowing his business down is nitpicky sneakerheads. "Unfortunately, it's just the hard and fast rules of doing business. You meet difficult customers. You'll meet cheaters, you meet scammers who will be out there to cheat you off a pair of shoes," Chan said. "So, unfortunately, this kind of thing happens, especially when you're on a public domain like the Internet." VICE News met up with Chan at his headquarters to see how his business is racing ahead. TAIWAN: TAIPEI: REACTION TO HANDOVER OF HONG KONG

03:18
Mandarin/Eng/Nat Taiwan woke on Tuesday to find it's closest trading partner and ally Hong Kong under a new ruler, China's communist party. Taiwan is desperate to maintain its strong trade ties with Hong Kong, the former colony acts as an economic gateway for Taiwan into the massive Chinese market. Many in the capital Taipei were optimistic about Taiwan's future now that Hong Kong had reverted to Chinese rule. Soon after the stroke of midnight in Taiwan, the printing presses rolled. Taiwan's closest trading ally, Hong Kong, had reverted to Chinese rule. Front pages headlines said it all: "Curtain Falls on Empire". When people woke, their mood was upbeat about the future of Hong Kong and the impact it will have in Taiwan. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are very pleased that the Chinese people finally got rid of colonial rule and returned to the large Chinese family. Of course, we would hope that in the future, the freedom, the rule of law, prosperity and also the protection of basic human liberties, etc. which now prevail in Hong Kong will be continued." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. King-yuh Chang, Mainland Affairs Council Taiwan is desperate to maintain its strong trade ties with Hong Kong, the former colony acts as an economic gateway for Taiwan into the massive Chinese market. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It is in the interest of both the people of Hong Kong and the people of the Republic of China to maintain and even strengthening those ties. I would say that both sides are very pragmatic and reasonable." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. King-yuh Chang, Mainland Affairs Council As crowds filled the streets in downtown Taipei, pictures of China's People's Liberation Army flashed across huge T-V screens. The orderly move into Hong Kong by the military came as relief for the Taiwanese after the P-L-A conducted missile tests off Taiwan during the island's democratic elections last year. But security did not appear to be the most pressing thought for some, patriotism was. VOXPOP: (Mandarin) "I am filled with great hope. I hope that there will be reunification, a peaceful reunification." SUPER CAPTION: Chen ming-shu, Taipei resident VOXPOP: (Mandarin) "I believe that people on both sides of the straits shouldn't have any hostility toward each other, should work together and come to terms on certain ideologies." SUPER CAPTION: Liang Bing-Hsuan, Taipei resident One former veteran, who once fought the Communists, believes the future of the a Chinese community lies much in the hands of the Communists. VOXPOP: (Mandarin) "I don't think reunification is going to happen soon, maybe some time in the future depending on what the Communists do." SUPER CAPTION: Civil war veteran The countdown for Hong Kong is now over, but the clock for Taiwan may have just begun. If a slave were to demonstrate such strength, it is an offense worthy of death. Hong Gil Dong(Yoon Kyun Sang) is the second son of a slave, Amogae (Kim Sang Joong). When Gil Dong demonstrates extraordinary strength as a young child, Amogae tells him that he must always hide his powers in order to survive in Joseon Society. When Amogae loses his wife at the hands of the nobleman that he has served all his life, he kills his master and manages to get out of prosecution. Amogae escapes to a remote land and establishes a colony of bandits that becomes prosperous through trading and helps protect the common people from corrupt government officials. Gil Dong becomes a traveling salesman who falls in love with Jang Nok Soo (Honey Lee), a performer in a gisaeng house, while her handmaiden Song Ga Ryung (Chae Soo Bin) falls in love with Gil Dong. When Gil Dong doesn’t return from one of his trips, Nok Soo thinks he has abandoned her and makes her way into the royal palace, where she catches the eye of the tyrannical King Yeonsangun (Kim Ji Suk) and becomes his consort. When Amogae is attacked and tortured by government officials, Gil Dong returns to his father’s colony to become its reluctant leader to get revenge on his father’s enemies. Can he protect the common people from the unjust tyranny of the king? “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People” is a 2017 South Korean drama series directed by Kim Jin Man. Becker Brown Bag: Crony Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics, Featuring Booth's Chang-Tai Hsieh

01:03:11
China’s fast-paced growth over the past three decades is one of the most remarkable events in world economic history. This growth was fueled by the introduction of pro-market policies, especially in agriculture and trade. However, China’s national institutions continue to restrict property rights and hinder private business development, among other obstructive policies. To counter those forces, China has developed a system of crony capitalism at the local level that has allowed businesses to thrive. Political leaders benefit when local businesses succeed, so those leaders use their power to enhance certain businesses’ success. Local political leaders then compete with other cities for businesses, creating a competitive market that helps drive economic growth. On February 22, the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago (BFI) hosted Chang-Tai Hsieh, the Phyllis and Irwin Winkelried Professor of Economics and PCL Scholar at the Booth School of Business, for a Becker Brown Bag lecture on “Crony Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics.” For more on the event and to view photos visit: https://bfi.uchicago.edu/events/becker-brown-bag-crony-capitalism-chinese-characteristics-featuring-booths-chang-tai-hsieh

HONG KONG: STOCK EXCHANGE

02:10
English/Nat Hong Kong shares are higher midday Tuesday in the first post-Christmas trading session, largely led by sharp gains in China Telecom. According to the traders short sellers in the futures market are rushing to cover their positions ahead of the December futures expiry on Wednesday. Technology and internet-related shares show little sign of easing despite concerns about a correction on the Nasdaq market. Ambrose Chang, Director and Chief Investment Officer Daiwa SB Investment Hong Kong Ltd says the turnover is largely centered around high-tech stocks. SOUNDBITE: (English) "If you look at the turnover there's a very narrow focus in, say, the top three or four so-called high-tech or internet stocks. Other than that, the big blue chips are not running and the turnover has been very slim in these few counters like H-S-B-C (Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Corporation), Hong Kong Tel or even Hutchison." SUPER CAPTION: Ambrose Chang, Director and Chief Investment Officer of Daiwa SB Investment Hong Kong Limited (Securities company) The performance of the Hong Kong stock market has outpaced the Hong Kong economy which is showing signs of recovery. But Chang warned that could bring problems. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It's running a bit too far ahead of the economy, if I have to say you know. This year we will see the recovery of the Hong Kong economy, and Hong Kong corporations, but the corporate earnings are not really spectacular you know, how do you say, double digit, 12 to 18 percent or 20 percent is the most. But next year we will see a recovery, with only very moderate earnings recovery. This rise is typically very focussed on some of the you know major themes - restructuring, internet, technologies and some conglomerate sectors. Other than that most of the stocks cannot reach their historic high." Should You Invest in Bonds?

04:07
Want To Generate Passive Income And Achieve Financial Freedom? Join Our Free Value Investing Masterclass Today: https://bit.ly/2qXPpsS Download Our FREE Value Investing Investing ETF Guidebook : http://bit.ly/2zsZtjo In this video I will cover another common question people ask me: "Should I Invest In Bonds?" Firstly, a bond is a debt investment in which an investor loans money to an entity (typically corporate or governmental) which borrows the funds for a defined period of time at a variable or fixed interest rate. In simple terms, some companies wanted more funds to grow and there are many ways to do it. One of the ways is to borrow from someone and in this case investors who buy the bonds. Since the company is borrowing from someone, it’s fair that the company has to give some form of returns to the investors (or lenders), thus the fixed interest rate. There are 2 main baskets of bond: a) Government Bonds b) Corporate Bonds My take? Unlike corporate bonds, government bonds are considered risk free as they are guaranteed by the government, it is important to understand that they still carry the interest rate risk. Interest rate is relevant for both government and corporate bonds. As the market interest rate rising, the real value of bond will decrease and vice versa. In addition to interest rate risk, corporate bonds are subjected to event risk. A company might face unforeseen circumstances which undermined their ability to pay the interest, – or repay the principal. This risk is highly depending on the company ability to generate cash. At the end of the day, just like any other forms of investments - don’t go in blindly hoping that your money will grow. You should always evaluate beforehand to avoid losing money! ★☆★ Join me in my FREE Live Masterclass and I'll answer your questions, teach you how to evaluate and invest safely in person: https://bit.ly/2qXPpsS ★☆★ SUBSCRIBE TO VALUE INVESTING ACADEMY YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW ★☆★ https://www.youtube.com/user/ValueInvesting101?sub_confirmation=1 Check out these Top Trending Playlist: 1.)
