UnCommon Core: Human Capital Investment Inequality and Growth with Kevin Murphy

01:02:16
Recently the seeming permanence of the rise of earnings inequality has motivated policy proposals to mitigate its impact, including more progressive income taxation, wealth and inheritance taxes, and pay regulation. In this UnCommon Core, economist Kevin Murphy argues that most of these treat the symptom rather than the disease. Instead he suggests a focus on the supply side, where the human capital choices of individuals and families affect the skill composition of the labor force.

In this video I answer a question from one my readers who asked: "Hello Evan, I am Tomal Dass from India. I always love to read all your articles about business and entrepreneurial leadership. It always fills me with new energy. It helps me a lot to learn a lot from the experiences of well known businessmen arround the world. Recently I was working in a partnership in event management business, We were new in the market and we didn't have any capital to rotate in Business. We were working to start a music festival in Central India. I belong to the city named Indore. It is the business capital of India and I figured out that there is a great scope in this region for a musical festival as there is no competition in this sector. We tried to go for sponsorship for bigger companies who's products are related to youth, as musical festival is related to youth. We were unable to generate any fund out of that. I thought may be we were new to this market that is why companies were not sponsoring us. Then we went for local businessmen for sponsorships and this one also didn't worked. So finally I planned for doing something off the grid. I planned to take a loan of 20% money for the event and ask any bigger Business firm to give their names for the sponsorships for free so that other business firms would also sponsor us. Then I dropped that idea because i didn't know that it's ethically right or not and will it work or not. Please guide me with this if you can. I would learn more from your articles. Regards, Tomal"

Sanjay Mehta on investment preferences and startup ideas he won’t fund

14:35
Sanjay Mehta, a serial entrepreneur turned investor, gets nearly 200 startup investment proposals every month. The early stage investor has backed about 40 startups, both in his personal capacity and through various angel networks. “Startup investments allows investors to move the needle and make a meaningful contribution to the venture, unlike other assets classes (equities, gold and others) where you have to wait and watch how the market reacts,” Mehta told Techcircle.in. Going forward, Mehta says he will explore investments in early-stage ventures that specialise in big data, marketing automation, productivity enhancement, location services and quick services restaurants besides medical devices. Mehta lists marketplaces, e-commerce platforms and home services ventures’ among the 15 startup ideas he would refrain from funding. Mehta’s portfolio includes names such as Zippr Smart Address, AllizHealth, Prettysecrets.com, and Poncho (Box8.in) besides others. He is a member of Indian Angel Network, Mumbai Angels, Venture Nursery, B2B1K Ventures and CIO Angel Network. As an entrepreneur, his most recent venture was MAIA Intelligence. Last year, its business was recently sold to publicly-listed Datamatics Global Services. Mehta last invested in Bangalore-based Green Enabled IT Solutions Pvt Ltd, which operates IT reverse logistics startup Blubirch. For more logon to vccircle.com/vcc-tv

The Essence of Corporate Finance by Finance for Non-Financials / online accounting courses

06:13
Published on Feb 16th, 2017 Every manager has to be able to discuss the financials of their investment proposals. Large capital proposals are based on the corporate finance literature. In this video I discuss the essence of the Corporate Finance; time and risk. Start is the expected cash flows from the project to be evaluated in time and risk. A mistake often made is to use the rate at which capital can be raised to evaluate the project. If you think that is correct please view the video!!! ✉ [email protected], ✆ ++31 653 653 015, Ⓘ www.f4nf.com Detailed info for masterclasses http://www.finance-for-non-financials.com List with financial abbreviations: http://www.finance-for-non-financials.com/financial-terms-in-english-dutch-and-german Music included from Michael Donner, Falling Rocks Final Rise Short, Tamaras Theme http://www.michael-donner-soundpacks.de/ Finance for Non-Financials enables professionals to use finance to their advantage. How could you use improved financial knowledge to better realize your goals? Do you have the necessary financial knowledge to present your ideas properly in your reports and discuss freely during presentations? What do financial reports tell you and how do they fit to the company? These are typical questions professionals in my courses have asked themselves. Do you recognize them? As experienced Executive Master in Finance and Control with a preference for learning and development I focus my efforts on explaining financials to professionals. Of course the theoretical content of a training should be rock solid. With that however one does not necessarily have an interesting, interactive and fun training. For that visual translations, metaphors and an inviting game are needed. You can contact Finance for Non-Financials for a training ✔ Understand financial overviews ✔ Investment decisions and the value of a company ✔ Project controlling ✔ Management Game ✔ Understand the financial expert (5 days) ✔ Use finance to your advantage (10 days) But Finance for Non-Financials also HELPS FINANCIALS with: ✔ Improved theoretical knowledge ✔ Corporate Finance ✔ Decisive technical communication with non-financial professionals All activities of Finance for Non-Financials are available in English, Dutch and German. Do you want to improve your own knowledge or that of your colleagues with respect to finance? Do you organize an event for which you are looking for an enthusiastic speaker to explain some principles of finance? Please do not hesitate to contact me! Copyright © 2017 Susan Marcussen

Capital Gains - The New Tax Rules 2018

03:06
House and Senate Tax proposals both aim to change the Capital Gains exclusion time frames for those selling a home as of Jan 1. 2018, no longer excluding up to $500,000 in home sale profit (for married couples, $250,000 for single individuals) if they don't meet the criteria of living in the home 5 out of the last 8 years. The current law excludes these amounts from being taxed as Capital Gains if residing in the home 2 out of the last 5 years. This is may be a game changer for many who've benefited from soaring Real Estate values.

Value for Money: Identifying/Screening PPP Proposals in South Africa

01:03:32
In 1997, the South African Cabinet approved an inter-departmental task team to create a package of policy, legislative, and institutional reforms to create an enabling environment for PPPs. To facilitate this work, several pioneering PPPs were carried out by the South African Roads Agency, Department of Public Works and Correctional Services, South African National Parks, and two municipalities. The lessons learned from these preliminary projects helped in the development of a strategic framework for PPPs in 1999. The Parliament of South Africa passed the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) in 1999. In 2000, the National Treasury enacted Treasury Regulation 16 in terms of the PFMA, which outlined the definitions and functions of PPP. This led to the establishment of the PPP Unit within the National Treasury and the publication of the Public Private Partnership Manual in 2004, which has since been updated to reflect changes to law and policy. The Government Technical Advisory Centre (GTAC) provides specialized analytical support to the National Treasury for the assessment of proposed large infrastructure investments. Project appraisals of megaprojects are undertaken to determine the likely economic and financial viability of the project, particularly where financial support is being requested from the fiscus. GTAC also performs related types of analysis, such as the likely impact of infrastructure investments on the financial sustainability of public utilities, financial cost comparisons of different elements of proposed investment programs, and potential funding mechanisms for infrastructure projects and programs. GTAC’s aim is to ensure that support is provided to the government in identifying public projects that offer the greatest value for money and contribute the most toward promoting economic growth and social welfare. The Capital Projects Unit has developed in-house methodologies for assessing projects and programs. GTAC seeks to assess proposals based on their value for money. Value is the economic and social activities the infrastructure supports, and money is the cost to put the infrastructure in place. The Capital Projects Unit assesses a proposal’s value for money by examining its social and economic context, demand, viability, financial aspects, and project deliverability.

financial planning 101, understanding financial planning basics and fundamentals

42:17
financial planning 101, understanding financial planning basics and fundamentals. What is a 'Financial Plan'? A financial plan is a comprehensive evaluation of an investor's current and future financial state by using currently known variables to predict future cash flows, asset values and withdrawal plans. Most individuals work in conjunction with a financial planner and use current net worth, tax liabilities, asset allocation, and future retirement and estate plans in developing financial plans. These metrics are used along with estimates of asset growth to determine if a person's financial goals can be met in the future, or what steps need to be taken to ensure that they are. Financial planning is the task of determining how a business will afford to achieve its strategic goals and objectives. Usually, a company creates a Financial Plan immediately after the vision and objectives have been set. The Financial Plan describes each of the activities, resources, equipment and materials that are needed to achieve these objectives, as well as the timeframes involved. The Financial Planning activity involves the following tasks: Assess the business environment Confirm the business vision and objectives Identify the types of resources needed to achieve these objectives Quantify the amount of resource (labor, equipment, materials) Calculate the total cost of each type of resource Summarize the costs to create a budget Identify any risks and issues with the budget set. Performing Financial Planning is critical to the success of any organization. It provides the Business Plan with rigor, by confirming that the objectives set are achievable from a financial point of view. It also helps the CEO to set financial targets for the organization, and reward staff for meeting objectives within the budget set. The role of financial planning includes three categories: Strategic role of financial management Objectives of financial management The planning cycle When drafting a financial plan, the company should establish the planning horizon, which is the time period of the plan, whether it be on a short-term (usually 12 months) or long-term (2–5 years) basis. Also, the individual projects and investment proposals of each operational unit within the company should be totaled and treated as one large project. This process is called aggregation.

PM urges Lao-Thai business, public sectors to boost investment

04:49
Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith has urged the business and public sectors in Laos and Thailand to open their hearts to investment and cooperation. He made the comment at the Lao-Thai Business Forum 2017 in Vientiane yesterday, organised by the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with the Thai Embassy to Laos. The meeting drew nearly 200 participants from the two countries, including businesspeople, officials from the Thai and Lao Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and relevant ministries. Mr Thongloun told participants that besides opening their hearts to each other, they should break down barriers to enable better investment and cooperation. Of course, Laos and Thailand have their own investment laws and Laos has just passed the new Investment Promotion Law, which will be implemented in the most effective way, he said. Business mechanisms must be quick, timely and transparent, he added. Investment proposals must be passed through only a single window and projects must be open to inspection, the prime minister said. Laos has potential in agriculture, especially livestock farming, fishery, and organic vegetable and rice cultivation, he added. There is now a high demand for Lao organic rice in the international market. In addition, there is strong potential for the generation of hydropower and growth of the tourism industry, Mr Thongloun said. The prime minister said the government will continue to improve the investment environment by maintaining political security and continuous and balanced growth of the macroeconomy. He especially urged the public and private sectors to seek investment. The business forum would be meaningful by promoting trade and investment cooperation, President of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mr Oudet Souvannavong said. Laos and Thailand have a long tradition of cooperation in various sectors, and their trade and investment relations have grown continuously over the years. Thailand is Laos' main trading partner. Laos' main exports to Thailand are electricity, copper, vegetables, tobacco and minerals, while the main imported products are fuel, vehicles, electronic items and machinery. The forum would be a platform for businesspeople from Laos and Thailand to exchange trade and investment information, Mr Oudet said. In addition, they could learn about each country's trade and investment policies and better match their business networks in the future, he added. Participants will hold discussions in eight sectors, namely logistics, agriculture, border and consumer goods trade, tourism and health, real estate, stock market and financial institutions, energy and raw materials and natural resources, Mr Oudet said. IMF: President Trump's tax proposals pose a major financial risk

01:24
The International Monetary Fund warned that U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed tax cuts and roll-back of financial regulations could spark a new round of financial risk-taking of the type that preceded the last crisis in 2008. The IMF said in its semi-annual Global Financial Stability Report that risks to stability have generally diminished in the last six months amid stronger global economic growth and higher interest rates that have improved bank earnings. The Fund however fears that already highly leveraged U.S. companies may not be in a position to translate a cash-flow boost from U.S. Republican tax reform proposals into productive capital investments that can aid sustainable growth Subscribe to us on YouTube: http://ow.ly/Zvqj30aIsgY Follow us on: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cgtnafrica/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/cgtnafrica

Doug Leone - Brazilian Ecosystem

35:22
Over the past decade, the Brazilian ecosystem has matured. In the past two years alone, we saw the first tech IPOs, unicorn acquisitions, the rise of seed and growth stage funds and records in venture capital investments. However, we are still lagging behind on some base pillars of ecosystems such as Silicon Valley and China. First, we do not have enough engineers graduating every year. Second, academia is still disconnected from the tech world. How does one of the largest VC funds in the world see the evolution of the Brazilian tech/innovation/ entrepreneurship ecosystem evolving since it first established a presence in the country? And how does it see that going forward?
