Phase Change and the Global Energy System - Lecture with Michael Liebreich
The entire global energy system is undergoing profound and rapid change. But while energy policy research often focuses on the economics of energy production, it can often ignore or assume away the importance of both finance and management. Finance questions extend beyond the cost of capital and to topics such as scaleable financing structures (e.g. 'green' bonds, yieldcos), capital recycling and refinancing, yield expectations/asset characteristics, portfolio construction, investor engagement, divestment, and capacity bottlenecks (e.g expertise, balance sheet capacity). While management questions might encompass issues such as how incumbent utilities can adapt to energy market transformations, the challenges of scaling renewable energy companies, operational efficiency, and how companies interact with and shape public policy. Michael Liebreich, Chairman of the Advisory Board for Bloomberg New Energy Finance, covers some of these issues, linking together developments in energy economics with parallel and inter-related changes in energy finance and management.

ECO13 London: Michael Wilshire Bloomberg New Energy Finance
Michael Wilshire, Director of Analysis at Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), talks about clean energy investment activity and trends at ECO13 London. BNEF provides independent market intelligence to investors and researches into the massive clean energy industry with a focus on policy, technology, economics, finance and supply chains. Clean energy attracted $281B of new investments in 2012 of which a small but important portion is VC and PE driving innovation. The growth of solar remains strong attracting 60% of global investments as a result of increased cost competitiveness and the learning curve effect. Looking at electric mobility and the role of batteries, the learning curve effect will reduce battery costs by a factor of 5 until 2030. As for startups, innovators in solar and smart energy are most popular among VCs. Michael's fantastic lecture is a good proof for market intelligence being the foundation for smart investment decisions. ECO14 London: Michael Wilshire Bloomberg New Energy Finance
Michael Wilshire of Bloomberg New Energy Finance talks about the latest cleantech investment activity and trends at ECO14 London. The main message is that renewable energy, mainly solar and wind, are becoming cost competitive in a growing number of countries during the next years. Combining renewable energy with storage will bring down energy prices in many countries, too. Tesla's Gigafactory alone accelerates the cost curve of batteries tremendously and should be a role model for many other battery manufacturers. It looks like we are on the right track but could still accelerate this positive development.

The Future of Power Generation A New Era for Renewables
The CSIS Energy & National Security Program is pleased to invite you to a discussion on the outlook for the electric power sector and the future role of renewables. The U.S. electric power sector is in the midst of a transition. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) both produce annual outlooks that assess long-term trends in renewable energy, which help understand the changes to this sector. Doug Arent and Wesley Cole will outline the scenarios developed by NREL. Ethan Zindler will summarize the key findings of the BNEF study published earlier this year. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) tracks potential market trends to inform the electric sector analysis in the United States. With this data, NREL analyzes the current and future technology costs and performance for renewable and conventional electricity generation technologies. This includes market projections with a dozen possible scenarios created with NREL’s Regional Energy Deployment Systems (ReEDS) model. Bloomberg New Energy Finance annually publishes a long-term view on the projected evolution of the world’s power markets. New Energy Outlook uniquely assesses segments of the electricity system that are driving rapid market changes, grid system developments, and dynamic business models. The comprehensive assessment includes the costs of wind and solar technology, battery storage, electricity demand, and consumer dynamics.

Secretary Kerry on the Future of Energy
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry delivers keynote remarks at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance "Future of Energy" Summit in New York City on April 5, 2016. A transcript is available http://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2016/04/255506.htm
Global Investment in Clean Energy Rises 16% in 2014 - The Minute
Bloomberg New Energy Finance is reporting that three hundred ten billion dollars was invested globally in green energy last year, a rise of sixteen percent over 2013. That amount almost matches the record total of three hundred seventeen billion, set in 2011. It should be noted that due to decreasing costs, the dollars invested in 2014 bought almost double the clean electricity capacity than in 2011. Solar power, with its rapidly dropping costs, was the main driver, attracting over half the total funding for the first time. Solar investment rose by twenty-five percent in 2014, while wind power rose by eleven percent, to one-third of all investment. The nineteen point four billion invested in offshore wind projects was a record for that category. Energy efficiency and electric vehicle investment increased ten percent. Measured by country, China was the leader, with clean energy investments rising thirty-two percent to ninety billion dollars. The U.S. was second, up eight percent to fifty-two billion, while Japan was up twelve percent to forty-one billion. Europe saw investment rise only one percent, but to a big number, sixty-six billion dollars. I’m John Howell for 3BL Media. © 2014 | 3BL Media | All Rights Reserved

Disrupting Renewable Energy Finance - AGRION Disrupt 100+ Summit
Benjamin Healey Senior Manager, Clean Energy Finance, Connecticut's Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA) Daniel Spitzer Partner, Cleantech Practice Group Leader, Hodgson Russ Christopher Pih Vice President, Bank of America Merrill Lynch Jessica Aldridge Senior Associate, New York Green Bank Near term measures to overcome obstacles to wider deployment of alternative financing Studies show that even with an aggressive carbon pricing scheme, there is an equilibrium point beyond which, to realize further decreases in emissions, the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency is necessary. However, given the current regulatory uncertainty, policy is serving more to hamper than help these industries. The effect of this can be seen in a decrease in renewable energy investment. According to a UNEP report released June 2013, based on figures from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, global renewable energy investment in 2013 was down 12% as compared to 2011. Fortunately, there is a bright spot in energy policy, which is the creation and proliferation of state clean energy banks or green banks. In this panel discussion, we examine the renewable energy landscape exploring both the compliance and voluntary markets. Topics discussed will include trends in RPS-driven demand, RECs, and corporate on-site and off-site renewables strategies as well as legislative and other key market shaping factors. What is the market capacity for renewable energy? What are the demand drivers for renewable energy? What are recent innovations in green bank financing?
