Blockchain Beyond Bitcoin | Valerie Hetherington | TEDxDeerfield

14:25
Buying things has, in one way or another, always been a feature of human society. As societies evolved, the need for a more organized system arose as people started practicing monetary exchange. At this point, goods and services could be exchanged for money that had a prescribed value. Eventually, “middle men”, such as banks, became the go-betweens to validate transactions and record them onto ledgers. In our modern society, the advent of new and revolutionary technology has the potential to drastically change upon this system. Born and raised in Bozeman, Montana, Valerie loves being outdoors, especially in the mountains. Attending school in Deerfield, MA has further expanded her horizons. This emphasis on exploring limits has led Valerie to her interest in the blockchain. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Blockchain Beyond Bitcoin - with Vinay Gupta | Virtual Futures Salon

01:32:20
Virtual Futures presents tech-visionary Vinay Gupta to dicuss cryptocurrencies and the uptake of the blockchain in all its applications. This event is organised in partnership with the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick as part of their 360 Lecture Series. Blockchain, also known as distributed ledger technology, has attracted a great deal of attention due to the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Whilst blockchain technology might be able to drive economic change globally, the applications are innumerable. Among others, the implications include empowering impoverished individuals by bypassing banks for payments, generating personalized identities for voting, securing healthcare data, improving supply chain logistics, and allowing business to be carried out transparently. Vinay will share his thoughts on how a technology that permits secure and transparent solutions might transform the next decade. Vinay Gupta is a leading figure in the blockchain space. He is the co-founder of Mattereum, co-ordinated the release of the blockchain platform Ethereum in July 2015, and was strategic architect for ConsenSys, a technology hub focusing on the Ethereum blockchain and related applications. He was the designer of the National Blockchain Strategy for Dubai and is a partner at Hexayurt Capital, the technology-focused VC firm behind the Internet of Agreements. He has been involved in commercial software development since 1992 and his experience as a programmer and visionary has covered fields as diverse as medical imaging, flight simulation, computer graphics, cryptographic applications and the web. SDC 2017 - Blockchain Beyond Bitcoin - Mark OConnell

59:29
Download Presentation: https://www.snia.org/sites/default/files/SDC/2017/presentations/Storage_Architecture/Tutorial_OConnell_Mark_Blockchain_Beyond_Bitcoin.pdf Abstract: *SNIA Tutorial * Blockchain is the name of a new class of distributed application which can coordinate independent operations across multiple machines in an untrusted network and produce a consensus result on both the correctness of the individual operations as well as the order in which the operations were executed. While the most well known use case for blockchain is Bitcoin, the technology itself has many other applications and implementations and use cases are arising in areas as diverse as international finance, B2B transactions, identity management, domain name registration, and many more. This tutorial will introduce the blockchain family of technologies, will discuss the technical aspects of the implementations and how consensus is achieved despite the lack of trust amongst the machines, will explore how this basic technology can be applied for non-currency related use cases, and will discuss alternative implementations of the technology and their advantages and disadvantages.

Before Babylon, Beyond Bitcoin - Dave Birch and Paul Buitink

46:17
Dave Birch is author of Identity is the New Money and Before Babylon, Beyond Bitcoin and is one of the founders of Consult Hyperion, a leading consultancy in the field of electronic transactions. You can find him at http://www.dgwbirch.com/ and https://twitter.com/dgwbirch. Birch starts with explaining the importance of open banking and the new Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) in Europe, which will completely change banking. New threats will come more from big tech companies like Facebook, Alibaba than from other banks. Money has evolved over time says Dave and each era needs its own money. We went from money that we understood to money that understands us. Money is a mere social construct or a temporary institutional arrangement. Dave ties the growth in global trade and rise in standards of living with the invention of central banking. In England Isaac Newton played an important role setting up the central bank. Dave demystifies the buzz around blockchain. Most concepts don't make sense since they're just aimed at rebuilding existing solutions. He explains what an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is and how those coins, or tokens, can make trade much better worldwide. The financial industry is waiting for proper regulation before tokenizing everything eventually. The token market will be layered with cryptocurrency at the bottom, then representations of real world assets and then a identity layer above that compliant with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering (AML) regulation. So who will be the money creators of the future? Dave mentions the 5 Cs. The first is central banks, who will at some point start issuing their own digital currency to citizens, called Central Bank Digital Currencies. The second are the commercial banks. The third refers to companies e.g. the IBM dollar that Edward de Bono already dreamed up in the nineties. The fourth is cryptography (he expects the bitcoin family tree to evolve) and the final is communities. Virtual communities will demand their own currency. The future economy furthermore will be more oriented around cities, a type of community. Water and energy could also well become money. Modern technology and artificial intelligence will ensure a smooth and seamless interoperability between a diversity of monies. Will we see a world of more or less monies? Dave definitely supports the former.

Neha Narula: The future of blockchain technology beyond digital currency to global coordina

34:49
Sunday, Hall D, 2:00pm - 2:30pm Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum have enabled a new architecture for peer-to-peer transactions without a trusted broker. As we have seen with the internet, distributed protocols can give users the ability to directly transact, circumventing slow-moving and sometimes corrupt intermediaries. One benefit of these systems is protecting consumers from payment censorship. Another potential benefit is opening up the currently privatized infrastructures underlying our financial and data systems. Beyond the realm of finance, cryptocurrency and blockchain technology development have sparked an effort to rethink the way that power and authority is embedded into the digital infrastructures that pervade our social, political, and economic lives.
Blockchain for Enterprise Applications: Beyond Bitcoin and Crypto

59:16
Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and other cryptocurrencies immediately come to mind when you hear ‘blockchain’, but cryptocurrencies only scratch the surface of what blockchain can do for your business – with potential use cases that stretch far beyond the Financial sector. Blockchain empowers enterprises to build applications with the potential to transform the way whole ecosystems work, especially where business processes and control extend beyond traditional corporate boundaries. By leveraging ‘smart contracts’ and integrating with off-chain data stores and IoT networks, organizations can build applications which extend their processes much further across supply chains; operate in trust-free environments as much as within known business networks; remove the need for expensive and inefficient central intermediaries; and provide a cryptographically secure form of proving identity, authenticity, and entitlement. Watch this webinar, moderated by Appian’s Product Strategy Developer, Austin Fathman, to hear industry expert Craig Wentworth of MWD Advisors explain why blockchain is so much more than "just a crypto technology." This webinar also explores: - The pros and cons of different blockchain types (public vs private) - What different blockchain technologies (such as Ethereum, Hyperledger, R3 Corda) offer, and how to harden them for use in the enterprise - What blockchain can (and can’t!) do for your business and how to spot an opportunity for blockchain application Learn how to combine blockchain with a low-code platform to turbocharge your apps: https://www.appian.com/blog/blockchain-when-youre-ready-to-build-low-code-is-the-way-to-go/

Paul Klanschek first heard of Bitcoin back in 2010 and has been fascinated by the impact of blockchain technology on the financial sector and other industries ever since. In 2014, he co-founded, what would four years later become the leading Bitcoin exchange in Europe – Bitpanda. Paul is well-established within the global crypto community and was as an advisor for popular digital currency projects like NXT, Waves, Lisk, Komodo, and more. Presumably, everybody has come across the terms blockchain, cryptocurrency, and Bitcoin, yet most of us are still wondering what these terms mean and how these technologies will influence our everyday lives. No matter if you are a cyber-expert or a rookie, you will be surprised how blockchain technology is going to turn our established systems upside down – in every respect! Paul Klanschek, our speaker, will take you into a fascinating world where trusting strangers suddenly implies security, and where no centralized authority not inevitably leads to chaos and anarchy but to order and coherency. _______________________ Video Production: Daysatreef daysatreef.com facebook.com/daysatreef/ Intro Music: derLux soundcloud.com/luxa-2 facebook.com/realderLux facebook.com/OuroborosKollektiv Logo Animation: Gerd Zimmermann Paul Klanschek first heard of Bitcoin back in 2010 and has been fascinated by the impact of blockchain technology on the financial sector and other industries ever since. 06:16
Donations are welcome at: 1AtFaRrPFiwm2xUYN2C41edGgKPR5AXYDh Blockchain and Bitcoin explained in five minutes: Blockchain technology will drastically change our lives. In the coming years, Blockchain, the technology behind crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, will inevitably and radically change the role of traditional trusted parties such as banks, accountants, notaries, and governments. The animated video about Blockchain and Bitcoin that was released today on http://bitcoinproperly.org is the first to specifically address the technology behind Bitcoin: the Blockchain. Within five minutes, it is explained how the essential functions of the “trusted third party” can be automatized through the Blockchain as well as what the implications of this are. From Bitcoin hype to Blockchain revolution: an internet of trust. With the arrival of crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, everyone around the world can trade with each other without any involvement from traditional third parties such as banks, notaries, accountants, and governments. Trade is a fundamental pillar of our economy and society, and traditional trusted parties play a crucial role in this. The technology behind Bitcoin making all this possible – the Blockchain – ensures that the essential functions of the “trusted third party’, are fully automatized through the internet. This way, these functions are as freely available, accessible, and programmable as the internet itself. The animated video, available in both Dutch and English, explains how this works, also mentioning practical applications. The implications are clear: in the coming years, the role of the traditional trusted parties will inevitably and drastically change, strongly impacting our daily lives. The creators of this animated video invite its viewers to think about and discuss the fundamental and radical innovations made possible by crypto currencies. Rutger van Zuidam founder of Dutchchain, organizer of the Dutch Blockchain Hackathon: “The Netherlands have all the assets to become Europe’s Silicon Valley of financial technology. It is possible for the Netherlands to position itself favourably in comparison to the US and UK, who are currently still ahead. The technology behind crypto currencies like Bitcoin plays an essential role in leveraging these opportunities. We hope that the animated video about the technology behind crypto currencies will positively affect this development.” Lykle de Vries: ”Bitcoin is not the new money for internet, but it is the new internet for money, value and ownership in all forms. Crypto currencies like Bitcoin are the next step in the emancipation of all world citizens, and can help create a new dynamic for democracy, society and economy.” About the creators The animated video is a non-profit initiative by designers Patrick Loonstra (www.patrickloonstra.nl) and Sebas van den Brink (sebasvandenbrink.nl) and entrepreneurs Lykle de Vries (ThesisOne.com) and Rutger van Zuidam (DutchChain.com).
