Blockchain Beyond Bitcoin - with Vinay Gupta | Virtual Futures Salon

01:32:20
Virtual Futures presents tech-visionary Vinay Gupta to dicuss cryptocurrencies and the uptake of the blockchain in all its applications. This event is organised in partnership with the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick as part of their 360 Lecture Series. Blockchain, also known as distributed ledger technology, has attracted a great deal of attention due to the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Whilst blockchain technology might be able to drive economic change globally, the applications are innumerable. Among others, the implications include empowering impoverished individuals by bypassing banks for payments, generating personalized identities for voting, securing healthcare data, improving supply chain logistics, and allowing business to be carried out transparently. Vinay will share his thoughts on how a technology that permits secure and transparent solutions might transform the next decade. Vinay Gupta is a leading figure in the blockchain space. He is the co-founder of Mattereum, co-ordinated the release of the blockchain platform Ethereum in July 2015, and was strategic architect for ConsenSys, a technology hub focusing on the Ethereum blockchain and related applications. He was the designer of the National Blockchain Strategy for Dubai and is a partner at Hexayurt Capital, the technology-focused VC firm behind the Internet of Agreements. He has been involved in commercial software development since 1992 and his experience as a programmer and visionary has covered fields as diverse as medical imaging, flight simulation, computer graphics, cryptographic applications and the web. Blockchain Beyond Bitcoin | Valerie Hetherington | TEDxDeerfield

14:25
Buying things has, in one way or another, always been a feature of human society. As societies evolved, the need for a more organized system arose as people started practicing monetary exchange. At this point, goods and services could be exchanged for money that had a prescribed value. Eventually, “middle men”, such as banks, became the go-betweens to validate transactions and record them onto ledgers. In our modern society, the advent of new and revolutionary technology has the potential to drastically change upon this system. Born and raised in Bozeman, Montana, Valerie loves being outdoors, especially in the mountains. Attending school in Deerfield, MA has further expanded her horizons. This emphasis on exploring limits has led Valerie to her interest in the blockchain. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

The Bitcoin and Blockchain Technology Explained

06:16
A block chain is a transaction database shared by all nodes participating in a system based on the Bitcoin protocol. A full copy of a currency's block chain contains every transaction ever executed in the currency. With this information, one can find out how much value belonged to each address at any point in history. ------------------------------------------------------------------- BUY BITCOIN SAFELY HERE: http://bit.ly/BuyBitcoinNow ------------------------------------------------------------------- REGISTER FOR A COINBASE ACCOUNT: http://bit.ly/CoinbaseBitcoinSignup ------------------------------------------------------------------- Every block contains a hash of the previous block. This has the effect of creating a chain of blocks from the genesis block to the current block. Each block is guaranteed to come after the previous block chronologically because the previous block's hash would otherwise not be known. Each block is also computationally impractical to modify once it has been in the chain for a while because every block after it would also have to be regenerated. These properties are what make double-spending of bitcoins very difficult. The block chain is the main innovation of Bitcoin. Honest generators only build onto a block (by referencing it in blocks they create) if it is the latest block in the longest valid chain. "Length" is calculated as total combined difficulty of that chain, not number of blocks, though this distinction is only important in the context of a few potential attacks. A chain is valid if all of the blocks and transactions within it are valid, and only if it starts with the genesis block. For any block on the chain, there is only one path to the genesis block. Coming from the genesis block, however, there can be forks. One-block forks are created from time to time when two blocks are created just a few seconds apart. When that happens, generating nodes build onto whichever one of the blocks they received first. Whichever block ends up being included in the next block becomes part of the main chain because that chain is longer. More serious forks have occurred after fixing bugs that required backward-incompatible changes. Blocks in shorter chains (or invalid chains) are not used for anything. When the bitcoin client switches to another, longer chain, all valid transactions of the blocks inside the shorter chain are re-added to the pool of queued transactions and will be included in another block. The reward for the blocks on the shorter chain will not be present in the longest chain, so they will be practically lost, which is why a network-enforced 100-block maturation time for generations exists. These blocks on the shorter chains are often called "orphan" blocks. This is because the generation transactions do not have a parent block in the longest chain, so these generation transactions show up as orphan in the listtransactions RPC call. Several pools have misinterpreted these messages and started calling their blocks "orphans". In reality, these blocks have a parent block, and might even have children. Because a block can only reference one previous block, it is impossible for two forked chains to merge. • How do Bitcoin Transactions Work? http://www.coindesk.com/information/how-do-bitcoin-transactions-work/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- DID YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO? ------------------------------------------------------------------- Enjoy this video? A wonderful electronic invention I want you to see. It looks something like this. Bitcoin. Bitcoin. Bitcoin. Ethereum and Litecoin. Stellar coin. Ripple Bitcoin alert. Over the last few years, the only thing more impressive than the skyrocketing surge in cryptocurrency prices is the media attention they've attracted. But what if in this tsunami of media coverage of digital currencies, we're missing the big story? What if the real revolution isn't the short term surge in the valuation of these coins, but in the business applications of blockchain, the technology that powers cryptocurrency? My name is Ash Bennington. I'm going to talk to entrepreneurs, consultants, and theorists to find out what's happening in the world of business blockchain. I'm in midtown Manhattan, heading to Hudson Malone to meet with my old colleague, Forbes crypto staff writer, Michael del Castillo, to discuss the issues and to put my conversation with the other experts into context. The words enterprise blockchain, what do they mean to you? To me, enterprise blockchain is the adoption of this distributed ledger technology that was first popularized by Bitcoin by companies that are already generating revenue using the old centralized model. Michael and I met we were both reporters a CoinDesk. While I was finance and markets lead, Michael was delving into exactly these issues running corporate blockchain coverage. In a lot of ways, the distributed technology behind Bitcoin was designed to make middle men unnecessary. And when we talk about enterprise adoption of this very same technology, sometimes, it's actually those very same middlemen that some people are imagining no longer need to exist. So striking that balance between staying on the cutting edge of what technology enables while still holding on to a strong revenue stream is really at the core of what makes enterprise adoption of blockchain so interesting. So what exactly is a blockchain? Blockchain Is a distributed database that stores information in blocks, which you can think of as a kind of virtual container for data. As new data gets added, additional blocks are created. The blocks are then linked together chronologically to form a sequence of blocks called a chain. As new information gets added, the chains get longer. This method of data storage is called nondestructive, meaning old data never gets erased or overwritten because the previous blocks in the chain remain unchanged. Each new block that is written contains something called a cryptographic hash, a small mathematical fingerprint of the blocks that came before the chain, making it extremely difficult to tamper with the data that resides inside the blocks. We spoke to some very interesting people in this space. We're talking consulting firms, people with sort of hipster Brooklyn startups across the board. This is going to be really interesting to get your view on what they're thinking about this. First, we went downtown to IBM's Watson global headquarters, and spoke to Jason Kelley, general manager for IBM's blockchain services. When you think of core value, it's back to what's the core outcome. And blockchain really is, as bright and shiny and exciting as it is, it's really simple. It reaches two elusive objectives that have been there for years. First, we know that businesses and the outcome of businesses run on data. There's been two things we've always tried to get with data. All right. A wonderful electronic invention I want you to see. It looks something like this.

Before Babylon, Beyond Bitcoin - Dave Birch and Paul Buitink

46:17
Dave Birch is author of Identity is the New Money and Before Babylon, Beyond Bitcoin and is one of the founders of Consult Hyperion, a leading consultancy in the field of electronic transactions. You can find him at http://www.dgwbirch.com/ and https://twitter.com/dgwbirch. Birch starts with explaining the importance of open banking and the new Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) in Europe, which will completely change banking. New threats will come more from big tech companies like Facebook, Alibaba than from other banks. Money has evolved over time says Dave and each era needs its own money. We went from money that we understood to money that understands us. Money is a mere social construct or a temporary institutional arrangement. Dave ties the growth in global trade and rise in standards of living with the invention of central banking. In England Isaac Newton played an important role setting up the central bank. Dave demystifies the buzz around blockchain. Most concepts don't make sense since they're just aimed at rebuilding existing solutions. He explains what an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is and how those coins, or tokens, can make trade much better worldwide. The financial industry is waiting for proper regulation before tokenizing everything eventually. The token market will be layered with cryptocurrency at the bottom, then representations of real world assets and then a identity layer above that compliant with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering (AML) regulation. So who will be the money creators of the future? Dave mentions the 5 Cs. The first is central banks, who will at some point start issuing their own digital currency to citizens, called Central Bank Digital Currencies. The second are the commercial banks. The third refers to companies e.g. the IBM dollar that Edward de Bono already dreamed up in the nineties. The fourth is cryptography (he expects the bitcoin family tree to evolve) and the final is communities. Virtual communities will demand their own currency. The future economy furthermore will be more oriented around cities, a type of community. Water and energy could also well become money. Modern technology and artificial intelligence will ensure a smooth and seamless interoperability between a diversity of monies. Will we see a world of more or less monies? Dave definitely supports the former.

Blockchain for Enterprise Applications: Beyond Bitcoin and Crypto

59:16
Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and other cryptocurrencies immediately come to mind when you hear ‘blockchain’, but cryptocurrencies only scratch the surface of what blockchain can do for your business – with potential use cases that stretch far beyond the Financial sector. Blockchain empowers enterprises to build applications with the potential to transform the way whole ecosystems work, especially where business processes and control extend beyond traditional corporate boundaries. By leveraging ‘smart contracts’ and integrating with off-chain data stores and IoT networks, organizations can build applications which extend their processes much further across supply chains; operate in trust-free environments as much as within known business networks; remove the need for expensive and inefficient central intermediaries; and provide a cryptographically secure form of proving identity, authenticity, and entitlement. Watch this webinar, moderated by Appian’s Product Strategy Developer, Austin Fathman, to hear industry expert Craig Wentworth of MWD Advisors explain why blockchain is so much more than "just a crypto technology." This webinar also explores: - The pros and cons of different blockchain types (public vs private) - What different blockchain technologies (such as Ethereum, Hyperledger, R3 Corda) offer, and how to harden them for use in the enterprise - What blockchain can (and can’t!) do for your business and how to spot an opportunity for blockchain application Learn how to combine blockchain with a low-code platform to turbocharge your apps: https://www.appian.com/blog/blockchain-when-youre-ready-to-build-low-code-is-the-way-to-go/

BEYOND BITCOIN

01:34
This video is part of the National Student Paper Competition through the Canada School of Public Service and the Institute of Public Administration Canada. The paper that this video complements was one of five chosen among 40 entries submitted to the Competition’s National Adjudication Panel comprised of 33 university professors and public servants. The Panel selected our paper, "BEYOND BITCOIN: Using Blockchain to Increase Efficiency and Data Reliability in the Additions to Reserve and Reserve Creation Process", on the basis of its originality, research, clarity, and relevance to the Government of Canada and the public service The briefing note proposes blockchain technology as a possible solution to address the inefficiencies present in the Additions to Reserve (ATR) / Reserve Creation process. The ATR process created through the 2016 ATR / Reserve Creation Policy Directive is inefficient and unable to guarantee that ATR or Reserve Creation land submissions move at the speed of business. Blockchain presents an opportunity to significantly expedite the ATR process by reducing the number of steps, reducing potential administrative errors within submission packages, facilitating an almost immediate exchange of information between parties, and ensuring that all parties involved in the ATR process are accountable to a high standard of accuracy and transparency.

It looks something like this. Over the last few years, the only thing more impressive than the skyrocketing surge in cryptocurrency prices is the media attention they've attracted. So what exactly is a blockchain? Blockchain is a distributed database that stores information in blocks. Enterprises who are in a lot of ways the definition of these middlemen, are experimenting with the technology. What is it about this technology that's so unique? The problem with the smartest guy in the room is that there's always another room. We've simplified this view of blockchain. There's a lot of wonky math going on behind the scenes. But if you followed along so far, you've probably got a pretty good idea of the general way blockchain creates trust in a distributed network with no single party in charge. And that's where there's going to be money to be made. The people who answer different parts of that question correctly first are going to make immense amounts of money.

a16z Podcast | Beyond Bitcoin -- The Blockchain

28:55
It’s well understood that bitcoin can be used to buy and sell things/services, and the ecosystem of people accepting the cryptocurrency as payment is expanding. But what else can we use the underlying protocol for? How can we expand the same system that enables bitcoin-the-currency to flow and transactions to be recorded? This discussion (from the a16z Academic Roundtable 2014) examines that question, and answers why the currency is just the beginning of the story when it comes to this technology. You can watch video of the entire discussion here: a16z.com/2014/10/24/the-bitcoin-network-effect/

Blockchain: Real World Use Cases

43:48
At Global Architecture Week 2015, we covered ‘Digital Currencies and Cash’ and their relevance to Tax and Welfare Authorities, concluding with the message: “It’s not about Bitcoin, it’s about the Blockchain”. Blockchain technology has the potential to enable a new mutually trusted, transparent way of sharing and transacting. In the UK Public Sector, Sir Mark Walport’s report Distributed Ledger Technology: Beyond Blockchain encouraged Government to assess its early use and potential. Meanwhile in the private sector, Blockchain FinTech excitement among start-ups and venture capitalists remained strong for a technology promised to be “like a whole new internet for value exchange”. But where are the real world use cases today? What is it that makes a use case more likely to succeed? In this talk, Nick Meyne, Enterprise Architect, Capgemini shares and discusses a number of Capgemini examples. Filmed at Capgemini Week of Innovation Networks 2016 in Telford, UK.

Neha Narula: The future of blockchain technology beyond digital currency to global coordina

34:49
Sunday, Hall D, 2:00pm - 2:30pm Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum have enabled a new architecture for peer-to-peer transactions without a trusted broker. As we have seen with the internet, distributed protocols can give users the ability to directly transact, circumventing slow-moving and sometimes corrupt intermediaries. One benefit of these systems is protecting consumers from payment censorship. Another potential benefit is opening up the currently privatized infrastructures underlying our financial and data systems. Beyond the realm of finance, cryptocurrency and blockchain technology development have sparked an effort to rethink the way that power and authority is embedded into the digital infrastructures that pervade our social, political, and economic lives.

It has been a wild ride for a cryptocurrency market that may not yet have hit bottom, scalding countless individuals and some big name investors. Yet blockchain—the technology upon which most cryptocurrencies are built—gained a strategic foothold in 2018 as an investment of the future for many blue-chip companies. How will crypto markets and their related technologies fare in the year ahead? Can blockchain companies with differentiated business models separate themselves from the pack?
