Is the "energy consumption" in mining a problem? Mining is a business of arbitrage for the cheapest sources of electricity. Proof-of-work mining is contributing to massive investment and subsidy in renewables / alternative energy and efficiency improvements in processing. It is driving the decentralization of energy production. "Consumption" in Bitcoin is easy to criticize because it is obvious, whereas the hidden externalities of the traditional financial system are massive. This is part of a talk which took place at the Bitcoin Open Blockchain (BOB) community event on October 29th 2017 at the mHUB innovation center in Chicago, Illinois: https://www.meetup.com/Bitcoin-Open-Blockchain-Community-Chicago/events/244248063/ RELATED: Immutability and Proof-of-Work: The Planetary Scale Digital Monument - https://youtu.be/rsLrJp6cLf4 Proof-of-Work (PoW), Proof-of-Stake (PoS), Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) - https://youtu.be/3W_3AQrQEOM What is mining? - https://youtu.be/t4p4iMqmxbQ Solar energy and mining in space - https://youtu.be/cusakcpa8AM What should not go on a blockchain? - https://youtu.be/shn9otsT-Pw The 14nm limit, decentralization, and renewable-energy mining - https://youtu.be/gYwc_MCC4us Why has mining centralised in China? - https://youtu.be/8iyOKlzEe-0 Bitmain and the ASICBoost allegations - https://youtu.be/t6jJDD2Aj8k Andreas M. Mining Energy Consumption: Problems and Possible Solutions Subscribe: http://bit.ly/CryptoCoinNewsYT Cryptocurrency is a payment method, Bitcoin is a huge investment, blockchain is a revolutionary technology. Regardless of the angle from which you view this new phenomenon, there is a global issue that needs to be addressed, and that's crypto mining power consumption. Blockchain is a ledger that verifies, validates and records transactions. The public and permissionless ones have no single central entity and rely on mining using consensus protocols like Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithm. Problems Having identified the global energy issue related to Bitcoin mining, it's time to point out the threats it poses. In a literal sense, Bitcoin is power hungry. And everyone knows that energy issues ultimately affect the climate. One question that fearfully comes to mind is, “with the rate of this consumption, is the sustainability of blockchain assured?” With every government focused on reducing carbon footprint, if this keeps on going it could mean unnecessarily harsh regulations for the crypto industry. Suggested solutions First of all, is this even a problem we MUST solve? After all, electricity is required to produce our toast, make elevators move and, of course, let you read this. Evidently, Ethereum has tried inputting major changes in the system by implementing another consensus protocol known as the Proof of Stake. PoS is an algorithm where mining is determined by the wealth of the miner on the network. A miner is meant to have a substantial amount of coin on the network before he can create a new block. Enforcing the employment of PoS and other available Consensus Mechanisms can influence some meaningful reduction in power consumption. As mainstream adoption of Bitcoin and other cryptos accelerates, increased energy consumption is a given. The above-recommended solutions are worth considering by the community. Can you have a secure blockchain without mining or energy consumption? Do the energy consumption statistics often shared by the media make sense? Why should the focus be on energy generation, not energy consumption? Energy consumption in Bitcoin has almost nothing to do with the number of transactions. Should we start pricing in the externalities of carbon? How does Bitcoin mining fund alternative energy solutions? https://powercompare.co.uk/bitcoin/ Bitcoin’s ongoing meteoric price rise has received the bulk of recent press attention with a lot of discussion around whether or not it’s a bubble waiting to burst. However, most the coverage has missed out one of the more interesting and unintended consequences of this price increase. That is the surge in global electricity consumption used to “mine” more Bitcoins. According to Digiconomist’s Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index, as of Monday November 20th, 2017 Bitcoin’s current estimated annual electricity consumption stands at 29.05TWh. That’s the equivalent of 0.13% of total global electricity consumption. While that may not sound like a lot, it means Bitcoin mining is now using more electricity than 159 individual countries (as you can see from the map above). More than Ireland or Nigeria. If Bitcoin miners were a country they’d rank 61st in the world in terms of electricity consumption. Here are a few other interesting facts about Bitcoin mining and electricity consumption: In the past month alone, Bitcoin mining electricity consumption is estimated to have increased by 29.98% If it keeps increasing at this rate, Bitcoin mining will consume all the world’s electricity by February 2020. Estimated annualised global mining revenues: $7.2 billion USD (£5.4 billion) Estimated global mining costs: $1.5 billion USD (£1.1 billion) Number of Americans who could be powered by bitcoin mining: 2.4 million (more than the population of Houston) Number of Britons who could be powered by bitcoin mining: 6.1 million (more than the population of Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Bradford, Liverpool, Bristol, Croydon, Coventry, Leicester & Nottingham combined) Bitcoin Mining consumes more electricity than 12 US states (Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming) All maps created using Mapchart.net. For the full breakdown of data, please keep reading.

This is a short video showing two different rigs and how much power that they use. Some basic Math..... 380W Usage for total 2 card system 70W when not mining.....thus the cards use 310W of power, or 155W each. Assuming that of that 70W that 20W is the power supply it means that the motherboard/hd/cpu/ram use 50W of power. So a 6 card rig should use about 100W less than three of these systems put together..... A 6 Card rig should use 60W for PSU overhead, 50W for board and such, and 155W per card, and then add about 10W for each Riser Board...that gets you a total of 1100W of power. Three of my dual card systems would be 1150W.....so only 50W more to get all the added benefits. I have been told that rigs made from RX 480 were about 850W to 900W. From my testing the 480 was about 40W less usage per card than the 580 so that makes perfect sense. Too bad those cards are not being made. We did not undervolt in this video, doing so can usually save a few Watts of power.

If you're looking into starting cryptocurrency mining, you want to make sure that you're making a good profit on your main computer or GPU (graphics card)/CPU. In this simple video guide and tutorial, I show you how to calculate your overall profit made through mining cryptocurrencies or algorithms by investigating your computer's hashrate, power consumption, pool fee, and your electricity rate. All of these values can be used to calculate how much money you will earn (or possibly lose) through mining cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or ZCash. The first and easiest method involves using the Nicehash profitability calculator, this will only work for Nicehash users. The second method will work for everybody, but requires a lot more information and will be a bit more difficult because you have to calculate on an individual algorithm basis. You will also need to locate your hashrate and power consumption which aren't easy to find. Note: This video does not talk about return on investment, since it's a very simple statistic for most people to figure out. Just divide the cost of your GPU(s) by your estimated USD/month to see how long it'll take to get a return on your investment. We all know that Craig Wright has compromised himself a lot, but beside that, this topic about Bitcoin energy consumption is quite interesting. So many people talk about Bitcoin mining energy consuption calling it horrible and nobody talks, for example, about Google data mining energy consuption, or Whatsapp data mining energy consuption. As you can see, we have double standards here. You will realize that in this interview Craig Wright reveals some interesting facts. THE $100 CRYPTO GIVEAWAY IS STILL ON!! JOIN THE CONTEST HERE: https://gleam.io/G3sVz/the-hydroconomist-1000-subscriber-100-btc-giveaway This is a long one guys! But it shows the trouble shooting you may have to go through when setting up the Antminer s9 the way I have with two separate power supply units - essentially.....we're hacking the mainframe, LOL! Now, this is not the recommended way of powering this highly powerful and specialized mining unit, but it will definitely work the way I have it configured, and yes this IS exactly how I wanted to set it up because i did not want to use a 220 outlet ( nor had the space) and so this is a little hack that isn't as well known, but if done correctly can provide some good hashing power. I intentionally did not want to run this unit at full throttle - especially the way I have it configured. The power demands are large, and if you do not take the right steps you could opening yourself up to the unit's failure, or worse, dangerous electrical issues. otherwise if you wish to take up mining be sure to do your homework and have the power needs to meet the criteria of running a machine like this 24/7 Here's a mining calculator to determine your potential return on investment - it's not that you're just paying for the hardware to get going, you'll be paying way more in electricity so be prepared for that, and hopefully you have really cheap electricity! In Bitcoin mining hardware, ASICs were the next step of development after CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs. Capable of easily outperforming the aforementioned platforms for Bitcoin mining in both speed and efficiency, all Bitcoin mining hardware that is practical in use will make use of one or more Bitcoin (SHA256d) ASICs. Note that Bitcoin ASIC chips generally can only be used for Bitcoin mining. While there are rare exceptions - for example chips that mine both Bitcoin and Litecoin - this is often because the chip package effectively has two ASICs: one for Bitcoin and one for Litecoin. The ASIC chip of choice determines, in large part, the cost and efficiency of a given miner, as ASIC development and manufacture are very expensive processes, and the ASIC chips themselves are often the components that require the most power on a Bitcoin miner. While there are many Bitcoin mining hardware manufacturers, some of these should be seen as systems integrators - using the ASIC chips manufactured by other parties, and combining them with other electronic components on a board to form the Bitcoin mining hardware. #amd #nvidia #cpu #mining #cryptocurrency #Bitmxittz #Scrypt #ASICS Benchmark PC Tech - MultiTechnopark Dont forget to hit SUBSCRIBE BUTTON!

(7 Feb 2018) LEAD IN Despite a rollercoaster ride in the price of Bitcoin - the farms which mine the cryptocurrency are continuing to boom in Iceland. But the extra computer power required for them to stay competitive has raised concerns over their long term environmental impact. STORY-LINE This desolated peninsula in southwestern Iceland has emerged as a frontier in the global rush for Bitcoin and other energy intensive cryptocurrencies. The blockchain system behind Bitcoin is programmed so that everyone can hypothetically profit from its maintenance. The incentive has spiralled to a frenzy with the price of one Bitcoin rising at one point to nearly US$ 20,000 over the past year, only to fall below US$6,000 this week. Ever more computing power is needed to beat the competition, creating a competitive cycle that is raising concerns about Bitcoin's environmental toll. Data centres around the world competing for new Bitcoins (a process known as mining) are expected to consume as much electricity as Argentina this year, according to analysts at the American bank Morgan Stanley. At the edge of the Arctic, Bitcoin miners seek natural cooling and competitive prices for Iceland's abundance of renewable energy. The Associated Press visited the largest of three Bitcoin facilities on the outskirts of Keflavik, known as "Mjolnir" after the hammer of Thor, the Norse god of thunder. This cryptocurrency farm is doubling in size, with five 50-metre (55 yards) warehouse buildings under construction. "What we are doing here, like Bitcoin mining, is like gold mining," says Helmut Rauth, manager at Genesis Mining, one of world's largest Bitcoin mining companies, according to own accounts. Inside the mine, rows of computer rigs line the walls, each powering about six graphics cards, run around the clock. The computers are tasked with solving maths problems whose solutions are used to validate new Bitcoin transactions. In return, miners claim a fraction of a coin not yet in circulation. Bitcoin's algorithm limits the total amount of coins ever available to 21 million. About 80 percent of Bitcoins have already been mined, or nearly 17 million. The validation process was a garage-operation on private computers at the early age of Bitcoin when returns were low. Genesis Mining, founded in Germany, was an early adopter of industrialising the process, first moving to Iceland in 2014 when the price of Bitcoin fluctuated from 350 US Dollars to 1000 US Dollars. Today the Bitcoin is valued at around 7,000 US Dollars, after peaking at around 19,000 US Dollars in December last year. The currency took a hit in January when China announced it would move to wipe out its Bitcoin mining industry, following concerns of excessive electricity consumption. Rauth says Bitcoin should not be singled out as environmentally taxing. Computing power always demands energy, he argues, comparing Bitcoin to credit card transactions and internet research. "How much energy is needed for that? This is the same global impact," he explains. Keflavik's Bitcoin farms are powered with electricity from the Svartsengi geothermal energy plant about 20 kilometres away. Currently, 50 megawatts are estimated to be used for mining Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in Iceland. Compared with data from Iceland's National Energy Authority, that equals about half of what the island nation of 340,000 people use to power its homes. An energy expert at Svartsengi told the AP that the cryptocurrency industry would likely double its usage this year, given the current growth and interest from foreign investors. Johann Thor Jonsson, director of Data Center Iceland, a business organisation, says Iceland had all the 'ingredients' for a successful Bitcoin base. We offer dedicated hosting for Bitcoin mining hardware so please visit www.bitcoinasichosting.com for more details.
