Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson

11:07
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson Take the quiz - http://www.learnex.in/articles-a-an-the/ The 3 articles in English are a, an and the. The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an orange boat. However there are few exceptions like the words honest and hour. In the words honest and hour the alphabet h is silent and therefore the letter o becomes the first alphabet of the word and hence we use the article an. E.g. Mr. Smith is an honest man. I will be with you in an hour. We use a before words that begin with consonants (all the letters of the alphabet except the vowels). E.g. Bumble is a baby elephant. • We use the before words that we have already spoken about. E.g. I bought an apple. The apple is very sweet.

How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson

09:31
How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson English articles ("a", "an", and "the") come before nouns. They help to communicate which thing you're talking about, similar to words like "this", "my", and "all". And they're confusing to a lot of English learners. Articles are really, really hard! If your native language doesn't use articles, they can be really confusing. The truth is, you might never completely master articles. Most non-native English speakers don't, even know if they're quite fluent and have spoken English for a very long time. That's mostly OK. Mistakes with articles don't usually get in the way of communication. Your listeners or readers will usually be able to figure out what you mean by guessing whether you meant "a thing" or "the thing". So while you should try to improve your skill with articles, you shouldn't worry much about them. This video lesson by Niharika will clear your basic doubts for using articles correctly.
English Books that Will Help You Reach a High Level of English Fast!

03:49
English books that will help you reach a high levle of English - https://www.tofluency.com/5-step-plan/ ← Click here to download your free guide. One of the most common question I get asked is... "What books will help me reach a high level of English?" In this new video, I talk about the types of books you should be reading and why. Watch in HD! ----------- TRANSCRIPT Hello, this is Jack from tofluency.com and in this video we're going to talk about books, and more specifically, what books are going to help you reach a high level of English, so keep watching! As an English learner, there are so many books that you can buy and read to help you with your English. Now firstly, there are the type of books that are specifically made for English learners. This is, for example, grammar books, course books, text books and books have been adapted for your specific level. And then, obviously, they're also books that haven't been made, specifically, for English learners; books on a whole range of topics: fiction and also non-fiction. Now, I receive a lot of questions from English learners, and one of the main questions I receive: is: What books should I buy to help me on my journey to English fluency? Now, I can not recommend a specific book in this general sense because a book that's going to be good for you and that's going to help you on your journey might not be suitable for someone else. This is because we all have different interests and also we have different levels of English. The key is finding a book that you can understand; a book that isn't too difficult for you and your level right now and also finding a book that is going to really interest you; a book that you just can't put down. Now, as you progress with your English and if you are an immediate learner now, I recommend that you find more native materials.Find books at have not been written specifically for English learners; find books that are native - books that have just been written in different genres. And remember: Choose a book that is going to interest; find books on topics that you find interesting. This might be novels, non-fiction like history, sports or politics or maybe magazines and blogs. Additionally, if you can find the audio for the book, as well, then I really recommend that you do this. If you find books that come along with the audio it means you can listen and read at the same time, you can read a book and then listen later. Or maybe you just listen to the book. But having the audio is really gonna help you improve your English. One last tip: the mentality of choosing books is really important, and what I recommend, like I've said throughout this video, is that you find books that you want to read. Don't read books that you feel you have to read instead, read the books that you think, "Yes, I really want to read this book and I know I'm going to enjoy it." And if you don't enjoy the book don't feel like you have to read it - put it down and choose a different book instead. Here is a question for you: I want you to leave your answer below this video: What is your favorite book that you have read in English? What is your favorite book that you have read in English? Leave your answers below.. thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time! ----- Please share this video if you found it useful. Thanks. How to learn English vocabulary words in an Easy Way to Speak English Fluently | The Skill Sets

23:13
How to learn English vocabulary words the easy way? is an idea much unknown to a large majority. Most commonly students tend to cram new words as a shortcut to vocabulary stock. What they don't realize is that vocabulary learnt in such unnatural way wont help them in the real world. learn vocabulary with pictures english vocabulary with meaning learn a word a day learn vocabulary online how to improve vocabulary in english and grammar english vocabulary exercises how to improve vocabulary pdf easy way to learn english vocabulary How to learn English vocabulary words the easy way is a tricky thing. Many people cram sets of words on everyday basis so they have a lot of vocabulary. But when it come to using that vocabulary in everyday life in speaking and writing, they don't remember those words that they crammed for the big day. The reason for that is that what you cram does not store in the natural vocabulary section of the brain. vocabulary with pictures pdf learn english through pictures very easy interesting learn english with pictures pdf english vocabulary with pictures and sound vocabulary words with pictures and meaning learn english with pictures pdf free download english words with pictures pdf english words with pictures for kids Cramming vocabulary or learning words and their meanings by heart won't help you in the real world. The natural way to learn vocabulary would be to read and listen such vocabulary through natural ways i.e listen songs, watch movies, read books, newspapers and articles. Through such natural knowledge gathering, not only you learn new words but also remember them with the reference of sentence and whole article. Also you learn new vocabulary words in a natural way. Reading books and watching English movies becomes a great vocabulary builder that won't fail. This is the best way to teach vocabulary. It may be possible that you remember thousands of words but may not be able to use crammed vocabulary in everyday life. so the real way to improve your vocabulary is the real way not a short cut on the other hand, you may know only 200 to 300 words and write and speak English without fail. So I would recommend you not to cram words. That will decrease your common sense. Rather take the natural rout. It will take you less time to master English vocabulary and automatic vocabulary will build up. This is the vocabulary hack that no one will tell you because it puts you independent that so called teacher don't want you to be. Just believe yourself and your memory. And you will be able to rock the world. Watch more free videos and Learn English Speaking: Watch Spoken English Course Demo to Know How to Learn English Speaking By M. 1 Simple Method to Improve Your Spelling - How to Write Correctly & Avoid Spelling Mistakes

04:33
Learn how to write correctly without spelling mistakes using this simple method. Transcript: Do you make lots of spelling mistakes? Do you have difficulty remembering the correct spellings of words? Well, in this lesson, I’m going to teach you an easy, three-step method to improve your spelling and write correctly without making mistakes. So let’s talk about that. OK, the first step of this exercise is to find your spelling mistakes. You do this by checking your own writing. If you are a student, then I’m sure you write a lot. If you work, you might write emails or reports. So, at least once per week, take your writing, and try to find spelling mistakes that you have made. Now, I know that this can be difficult – you don’t know what mistakes you’re making. So there are two great ways to know your mistakes – the first is to ask someone else to read your work and underline or circle any errors (and also give you the correct spellings). The second option is to take your writing and type it (or copy/paste it) into Microsoft Word. The software will then underline your spelling mistakes for you and give you the corrections. This way, you can identify your own errors. OK, let’s do an exercise to understand this process: Here’s a short text that I wrote – there are five spelling errors in it. Stop the video, try to find the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers: ‘a lot’ should be spelled with a space. ‘Definitely’ has no ‘a’ – it should be an ‘i’. ‘Received’ is written with ‘ei’ not ‘ie’. ‘Rhythm’ needs to have an ‘h’ after ‘r’. And ‘schedule’ needs to start with ‘sch’. OK, did you find them all? Alright, so like this, you identify the words that you are spelling incorrectly and learn their correct spellings. And now comes the important part – record the correct spellings of these words. That means, you should note down the correct spellings of all the words you spelled wrongly in a notebook or in a file on your computer. You should write the spellings on one side of the page, and on the other, you should write the phonetic transcription – that is, the same word in pronunciation symbols – this will allow you to see the difference between the spelling and the pronunciation, and you will also be able to test yourself later. Now, I know that you don’t know all of these symbols, that’s OK – they’re very easy, you can find them by looking up each word in a dictionary. So just like I have done here, you should take all of the words – note down the correct spellings, and also note down the phonetic transcription. Finally, the last step is review the spellings regularly. You do this so that you don’t forget the correct spellings. Make one day of the week your spelling improvement day (maybe Saturday or Sunday). On this day, test yourself on the spellings. To do this, open your notebook and hide the spellings. Only look at the pronunciation symbols. Now, can you give me the correct spellings of these words that we just learned? Stop the video, try to write down the correct spellings, then play the video again and check. OK, here they are. Did you get them all right? So, you should do this for your own spellings that you write down. By testing yourself, you will remember the correct spellings and you will not make the same mistakes again. You should do these three steps regularly – find your mistakes, record the correct spellings, and test yourself regularly. As you do this, you will start to collect more and more words. This means that your mistakes will reduce, and eventually, you will be able to write without making spelling errors. Alright, if you liked this lesson, give it a thumbs up by hitting the like button. Writing Skills: The Paragraph

14:33
http://www.engvid.com The paragraph is the most important unit of a well-written essay. The paragraph has a specific structure and standards that make it effective and enjoyable to read. In this writing lesson we will look at how to construct good paragraphs and improve writing with better flow and clarity. After the lesson, take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/writing-skills-paragraph/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about the paragraph. It's a writing lesson, and I want to show people what a paragraph is and how to construct one, what to do, what not to do so you can write very clear, very tight paragraphs. This is especially important for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students but everybody has to follow the exact same rules. Now before I even begin, I must say that I'm talking mostly about academic writing or even business writing. Creative writing like novels or short stories, anything fiction, you can do anything you want. Only always remember: somebody has to read what you wrote so it has to be clear. But academic essays, for example, certain rules you have to follow; you have to be very careful about them. So let's begin. In terms of like the actual way a paragraph looks: you have to indent or skip a line. So let me just make sure you understand what an indent is. This is an indent, the first line a little bit pushed in or you can make sure you skip a line between paragraphs. But don't do both. If you skip a line, don't indent. Okay? That's the main thing. Now, that's in terms of the way it looks. In terms of content -- and this, I can't stress this enough -- very, very, very important: one central idea in one paragraph. Okay? I've seen many people, I've seen many essays where you start a paragraph talking about one thing, and then you go off on a tangent and talk about something completely unrelated. So for example: if you start a paragraph and you're talking about apples, continue to talk about apples. If you go to oranges, that's maybe okay because you're still talking about fruit. But if you start with apples, go to oranges, go to bananas, and then end up with monkeys in space there's a bit of a problem; the reader has no idea what you're talking about. One paragraph, one central idea. Now, make sure that you tell the reader what this central idea is. This is your thesis statement. Okay? It's a very general sentence. All it does is introduce the topic of the paragraph, nothing else. All the details comes after. So speaking of details, we'll talk about details in detail, but all other ideas, all the other sentences, all your sentences with the details must directly relate back to the main idea. So let's say here is your thesis statement; very general, every sentence after must relate back to that thesis statement. Okay? You can't go off to another idea. Everything must support this, must talk about the same topic. Very important. Okay? How long should your paragraph be? Technically, a paragraph could be one sentence, but in an academic essay that rarely happens. But it could be any length you want, as long as you're still on that one topic, as long as you still have things to write and things to say about that topic, say it. If you have four sentences, fine; if you have 10 sentences, also okay. Again, for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students: four, five sentences should be your limit. You can't be too long because you don't have time and you're going to start making mistakes. So now, the details. Very important to have lots of details. Why is this topic important to your overall idea of your essay? Not only tell me what is the topic, what is the thesis statement of the paragraph, make sure you explain to me why this is important to the general idea of the essay. Give me your reasons. Now, why is it important? And then reasons, why you think what you're saying supports this idea. Examples, always use examples because giving me the reasons is okay; examples make me see exactly what you're trying to say. Very easy for me to understand what you're trying to say. Now, in terms of flow, in terms of the way the reader can approach the paragraph, you have to have bridges. What is, what do bridges mean? Basically, when you have one idea in this sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence. Every sentence must have a link to the next sentence. This creates flow, makes it much easier to read and understand, and it keeps you on the one topic. Now, key terms. If you're talking about something specific and you have to use a key term, use it as many times as you need to. Otherwise, avoid repetition. Try not to use the same word more than once in one paragraph. Okay? For example: if you're using the word "moreover" in the paragraph, don't use it, don't use "moreover" again -- use "in addition to", use "furthermore", "another", etc. Try to avoid using one word more than once, especially in the same paragraph.
How to write a good essay: Paraphrasing the question

14:39
Do you sometimes struggle to begin writing an essay when taking an exam? Good news! There is an important writing skill that will help you improve your essay introductions. This technique is called "paraphrasing", and it means rewriting something using different words. In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase successfully and how to change essay questions into your own words. These skills are very useful for university and high school students, as well as any students writing English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or IELTS. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-good-essay-paraphrasing-the-question/ WATCH NEXT: Essay Writing – 6 ways to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8WSzwBD7GQ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.
