Human Resources is a business field focused on maximizing employee productivity. Human Resources professionals manage the human capital of an organization and focus on implementing policies and processes. They can be specialists focusing in on recruiting, training, employee relations or benefits. Recruiting specialists are in charge of finding and hiring top talent. Training and development professionals ensure that employees are trained and have continuous development. This is done through training programs, performance evaluations and reward programs. Employee relations deals with concerns of employees when policies are broken, such as harassment or discrimination. Someone in benefits develops compensation structures, family leave programs, discounts and other benefits that employees can get. On the other side of the field are Human Resources Generalists or Business Partners. These human resources professionals could work in all areas or be labor relations representatives working with unionized employees. In startup companies, trained professionals may perform HR duties. In larger companies, an entire functional group is typically dedicated to the discipline, with staff specializing in various HR tasks and functional leadership engaging in strategic decision-making across the business. To train practitioners for the profession, institutions of higher education, professional associations, and companies themselves have established programs of study dedicated explicitly to the duties of the function. Academic and practitioner organizations may produce field-specific publications. HR is also a field of research study that is popular within the fields of management and industrial/organizational psychology, with research articles appearing in a number of academic journals, including those mentioned later in this article. Businesses are moving globally and forming more diverse teams. It is the role of human resources to make sure that these teams can function and people are able to communicate cross culturally and across borders. Due to changes in business, current topics in human resources are diversity and inclusion as well as using technology to advance employee engagement. In the current global work environment, most companies focus on lowering employee turnover and on retaining the talent and knowledge held by their workforce. New hiring not only entails a high cost but also increases the risk of a newcomer not being able to replace the person who worked in a position before. HR departments strive to offer benefits that will appeal to workers, thus reducing the risk of losing corporate knowledge.

Some organizations suffer from high turnover. It’s like a revolving door. The organization doesn’t seem to be hiring the right people, for the right reasons, to do the right jobs, and employee retention is difficult. The most critical step is hiring the right person in the first place. Nothing worse than hiring the wrong person; and punishing them, by having them, try to do the wrong job. That is miserable for everybody. So hire the right person in the first place. Once you have hired someone, give recognition for every job that is well done. I would rather “overdo” than “underdo” appreciation and recognition. Communicate openly with your employees as often as possible, one on one, face to face, in staff meetings, responding to questions asked in the newsletters, scheduled quarterly evaluations, and at organization –wide events. Continue to develop your own conceptual, interpersonal, and technical skills and be a role model for life long learning. Then be sure to support others’ educational opportunities and advancement. Be the best listener in the organization. Consider others’ ideas and follow-up or follow through with discussions and decisions. If you want to improve employee retention, then recognize and reward longevity, with anniversary cards, vacation, pay increases, special events, newsletter articles, snazzy shirts, pins, plaques, picnics, or parking spots. Provide a positive leadership style and get to know the people you lead and what motivates and excites them. Maintain high standards of professionalism and expect only the best from your staff. Provide the tools they need to be successful. Then you can promote from within. And when you have done everything you can to help a struggling employee; kindly let them go. Or you will lose the most productive people that have been picking up the slack. It is expensive to have a revolving door with employees leaving shortly after they are hired. Cut costs by investing some time and money in these retention strategies and enjoy the long-term benefits of employee retention.

There is a hiring freeze in place or you simply decide not to refill the position. Instead, you split the workload between your two remaining managers. They’re experienced; they have longevity; and they have a strong rapport with the staff. Overall, you think the decision will have a positive impact on your bottom line. Individual Job Vacancy Cost versus Real Cost At a first glance, it may appear that you’re making an intelligent decision. But before you go bragging to the executive team about your newfound efficiencies, consider the real cost of the job you’re leaving vacant. That’s right, vacant jobs come with a cost, and there are two primary levels to consider when evaluating the cost of leaving a job unfilled: the individual job vacancy cost, and the total, or real cost. If you can make your caregivers feel appreciated on a regular basis, that can really help with retention. People like to feel accepted and appreciated. In many home care agencies where there are 50 or 100 caregivers, it’s easy for employees to feel invisible. It’s hard for agency owners to give each worker the personal touch. But if you begin or end all of your interactions with your caregivers with words of thanks or appreciation, it can do wonders for your retention levels. Not only that, your positive attitude may help you recruit new caregivers. With all of the upheaval in the industry, your employees are likely to have friends who are seeking new jobs. When they hear that your agency has high morale levels and the caregivers are frequently recognized for a job well done, they may choose to sign on. Free ideas There are any number of things that you can offer your caregivers for free to make them feel good about working for your agency. Lee has extensively explored employee motivations for quitting or staying. He will present the latest research findings and offer concrete suggestions on how organisations can improve employee retention. Tom is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of Management and Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs at the Foster School of Business, University of Washington. His primary research interests include employee loyalty, retention and turnover, and work motivation. Tom has published over eighty academic articles, authored a book on qualitative research methods, and won numerous research awards. He has served as Editor of the Academy of Management Journal and as President of the Academy of Management, and currently serves on the editorial board at the Journal of Applied Psychology. Tom is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
