Dr Edward de Bono at Creative Innovation 2010 - "Re-thinking the future"

18:28
http://www.ci2016.com.au Dr Edward de Bono is regarded as the global leading authority in the field of creative and conceptual thinking. An MD, PHD and Rhodes Scholar, he has authored 72 books in 41 languages. If questioned today, many people would say the biggest problem facing humanity is Climate Change. According to de Bono, this is not true. The biggest problem facing humanity is our poor thinking... The only bigger problem is that we don't realise this. The way our minds work today is simply to recognise and respond to patterns. As our education system was based in religion from the time of the renaissance, we have been taught to think in ways that would be useful to the church, ie. truth, logic and argument. Watch the wonderfully entertaining Edward de Bono in his presentation at Creative Innovation 2010 to discover how you can add to your current way of thinking and increase your ability to design and create. Creative Innovation 2016 Asia Pacific will be held on the 7-9th November, 2016. The central theme of this year will be 'The Exponential Shift'. Dr Iain McGilchrist at Ci2012 - "The Courage to Think Differently"

14:05
Dr Iain McGilchrist speaking at Creative Innovation 2012 http://www.creativeinnovationglobal.com.au/Ci2012/ Please feel free to leave your comment below. Author and psychiatrist Dr Iain McGilchrist explained how the brain works. He said "our brain works by seeing parts and space and we need to take the broader view" and with some visual demonstrations he showed us context is important. We need left and right brain both individually and simultaneously -- need to be held together and apart. According to him, there is a hierarchy of attention -- start with the big picture and then pay attention to the detail. We need to take the broadest possible view or we will miss the predators and dangers. About creativity, he noted "The nature of creativity is to make space for it". At the end of the talk, he left us with "Don't just do something, listen". Iain was a Research Fellow in neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He has published original articles and research papers in a wide range of publications on topics in literature, medicine and psychiatry. His latest book, "The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World", published by Yale in November 2009, explores the way in which the bihemispheric structure of the brain influences our understanding of the world. Professor Daniel Dennett at Ci2011 - 'Prospective gains and losses from the information explosion'

18:10
Professor Daniel Dennett, one of the world's leading philosophers and cognitive scientist talks about the 'Prospective gains and losses from the information explosion'. Dan Dennett begins his presentation with a question: "Are we dependent on technology? And are we in fact enslaved by it?". No surprises here -- the theme of the conference IS 'The challenges & opportunities of a super-connected world'. But then he says something that scares me. "Do you have a plan for how to keep doing business if the internet was to go down?" No. "Do papers, tv networks, hospitals & police stations?" Now I'm terrified. Undoubtedly, our lives do depend on technology. The opportunities that have come with this technological age are almost immeasurable. But within this, we also have more opportunity than ever now to fill ourselves with guilt -- now that we CAN do XYZ, we have no excuse. When XYZ still goes undone, we feel guilty. More than that -- what jobs will exist in the future if technology is to continue its exponential growth as (other Ci2011 speaker) Ray Kurzweil suggests? Will doctors become "medical receptionists & doormen", pushing a few buttons and smiling politely? Where's the adventure in that? He asserted there should be a match and focus on what's important and what's doable. He believes that real leaders take responsibility. It's not saying 'blame me' if it doesn't work but for establishing a framework where people can work. It's vital to define the challenges that they can deal with, and come up with ideas and work principles so they can take the first step. Leadership is about learning how to take the next step and taking responsibility for that. Richard Rumelt is the Harry and Elsa Kunin Professor of Business & Society at UCLA , a graduate school of business and management. He was voted to be one of the "Top 50 Business Thinkers" in the world (rank 20 in 2011) by the Thinkers50 program, sponsored by the Harvard Business Review and McGraw Hill. We are all cut from the same genetic cloth and are interconnected. We share the same genius. The other cultures of the world are not failures to be us; rather, they show us what it means to be human. Wade Davis is an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society. Named by the NGS as one of the Explorers for the Millennium, he has been described as "a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life's diversity." Li Cunxin, the author of Mao's Last Dancer, told us a vivid story of himself coming out of the time of Mao's revolution and how far he had come in his journey. How he was chosen as 1 of 44 ballet dancers and that tiny little chance was the point when everything changed. He said "so many ideas are left in people's minds and live on as just dreams. You have to dream those dreams and live it too". We need to have a curious mind to think BIG and dream and the courage to take the first and second steps. Li Cunxin's journey is simply remarkable. He was born into utter poverty in Mao's communist China, at a very young age he was selected to train in Madame Mao's Beijing Dance Academy. So began Li's journey. The 7 years of harsh training regime at the Beijing Dance Academy taught him discipline, resilience, determination and creativity. Li's astounding drive and relentless hard work made him one of the best dancers in the world. He won numerous prestigious dance awards including the Princess Grace Award for Dance, two silver medals at international ballet competitions and the Green Room Award for Best Male Dancer. Ci2011 Speakers Thoughts: Promoting Innovation in Organisations

01:52
What happens when you work in an organization where innovative thoughts and actions are not promoted or welcomed, usually you have limited choices (either you leave, stay or suck it up.) This video sums up the thoughts of different leading speakers from Ci2011 on promoting innovation in an organisation. It's all about encouraging experimentation and risk taking. It's about creating a supportive environment in which people feel free to express their ideas without the fear of criticism or ridicule. As Sir Gus Nossal AC says "Innovation is not a cost to an organisation, but an investment." Watch this video for ideas on how you can encourage innovation in your own organisation! Patrick McGorry at Creative Innovation 2010 - "Mental Health and Mental Wealth"

16:10
In this presentation, Professor Patrick McGorry (Australian of the Year 2010) addresses how we get to a 21st Century model of mental health in Australia. Our health is our greatest natural research, and there is currently an huge issue surrounding the serious neglect of appropriate mental health care. Why is it so important? Some of the statistics will astound you: 4 -- 5 million Australians are affected by mental illness every year. 1 million of these are aged 12 -- 25. Someone will die from suicide in Australia every 4 hours... and every 8 minutes someone will attempt suicide. It is the greatest killer of Australians up to the age of 40 -- that's 40% bigger than the road toll. Even more amazing is that most of it is preventable. 90% of people with physical health problems will get pretty good access to pretty good quality care in Australia, while only 1/3 of people with mental health problems get access to any sort of care at all. Professor McGorry describes in his presentation the imbalance between physical and mental health care, and how we must engineer the mental health system properly for the right age groups, making it relevant and accessible to those who need it most. There is a tremendous capacity to solve this issue in Australia, but it requires serious political commitment and community will to make it happen. Watch this presentation for further information on what needs to be changed in the current health system and why, as well as practical ways to make these changes. And organizations know their ability to innovate lies in the creativity and abilities of their people. The individual needs to understand and adopt internal thinking processes that increase the potential for new thinking. Organizations have to do the same. The workshop will offer a powerful and transformational team leadership development experience in which self-limiting beliefs are removed and participants will find a new paradigm for ideas, potential and possibility. Research clearly shows the need to engage the right side of the brain to unlock our creative thought processes. The key to unlock this right side function, that is easiest to access, is music. This is why music in its various forms is so popular with people of all backgrounds. Whatever the role, function, department or level music is a universal language and leveller. Its power to generate open mindedness and creative thoughts is immense. Everyone can make a vital contribution to the energy within the organization by feeling free to express themselves. In this workshop we use a variety of non-threatening, yet highly engaging processes to bring people together and build trust through the power of music. This leads to generating of new streams of thoughts and ideas for business development. Importantly the group engagement factor lifts immeasurably through the shared experiences. By engaging the creative right side of the brain with the logical left side, we bring a powerful whole-of-mind engagement process to all participants. This is then leveraged to create a shared vision and ownership of the goals of the organisation. This is a brilliant team building activity designed to heighten wellbeing, creativity and innovation, emotional expression and self awareness. We have successfully delivered this approach to groups ranging from executive teams of 10 to entire departments and companies and more than 1000 delegates at national and international conferences and special events. Industries have ranged from banking, finance and accounting to resources, retail, IT and telecommunications. The results are meaningful, magical and measurable. "The program is most useful in transforming and building a stronger and more cohesive team." Visionstream/Leightons "A great activity that really brought together our 250 HR leaders as one team. We started with 70% saying they couldn't sing and finished with an amazing four-part harmony song that they really were proud of. Highly recommended to create a 'can do'culture!" Telstra

Ci2013 Race To The Future: Learning to be creative and innovative from kids

04:38
The 'Race to the Future' Learning creativity from kids Creative Innovation 2013 Asia Pacific www.ci2013.com.au and www.creativeinnovationglobal.com.au Creative Innovation 2013 Asia Pacific Race to the Future. E6 Environment. Energy. Economy. Education. Entrepreneurship. Ethical Leadership It's amazing what children can teach us about how we can create better lives. Yes, most of the time they don't have a clue as to what they are talking about, but unknowingly and without a clue they allow us to explore things that we tend to forget as we grow into adulthood. As once quoted by John Whitehead "Children are living messages we send to a time we will not see!" If you ever sit down and actually just listen to what a group of kids are saying, although much of what they say will not make sense, but many times they make some pretty profound statements that can give clues to adults of ideas and solutions. So, the Creative Innovation team went to different schools to talk to young children about what they think about environment, energy, education, entrepreneurship and ethical leadership and how in their opinion all these will evolve with time. Children have been referred to as a "perpetual discoveries." As adults, we grow older, become more serious and wrapped up in our day to day activities. On that note, remember, our kids are our teachers and mentors and we need to be able to keep an open mind and learn from them. Ci2013 Race to the Future featured over 40 leaders inclduing environmental leader Bjorn Lomborg (Czech Republic), sustainability in China expert Peggy Liu (China), BBC Senior Business Correspondent Linda Yueh (UK), global education expert Stephen Heppell (UK), revolutionary education and activist Bunker Roy (India), social innovator Jon Duschinsky (Canada), disruptive innovation leader and Harvard author Scott Anthony (USA), eco-entrepreneur and futurist Jason Drew (South Africa), workplace of the future expert Steve Vamos, Managing Partner McKinsey&Company Michael Rennie, Monash Chancellor Alan Finkel, Carol Schwartz, Lisa Paul and many more...!
